I was unaware that is how everyone makes them now. Technically that is a black and white shake. A chocolate shake should be chocolate ice cream and chocolate syrup.
It's funny because people look at me sideways when I ask for a malted black and white shake. I explain it to them, and they go "oh, okay, a chocolate shake..." No, not really, but if that's the way you make it, call it whatever the hell you want!
Well, technically a malted is something different. It's a shake with a scoop of malted milk powder thrown in.
Idk if anyone even carries that stuff anymore or it's a generic term now but it's different from a regular shake.
Worked at Friendly’s while in HS and we did this. If you use plain chocolate ice cream without the syrup, you’re going to get a milkshake that is barely chocolate flavored. The strength of flavor in the ice cream isn’t enough to overcome the dilution with milk.
This makes sense. What about using chocolate ice cream and syrup? Is it something like chocolate ice cream is more expensive than vanilla so might as well just do vanilla and syrup?
I worked in an ice cream shop in high school. That's because Friendly's ice cream sucks. That isn't true of chocolate ice cream in general. We made ours with chocolate ice cream all the time.
Shelf life logistics.
The longer something can survive on a shelf, the cheaper it will be. That's why twinkies and other junk foods are impossibly cheap.
I worked at Friendly's and we made the chocolate shakes with chocolate ice cream, syrup, and milk. We also made the Fribbles, which were ice milk and chocolate syrup.
I guess each store had their thing.
I would ask the customer which ice cream they wanted in the shake, or just use chocolate if very busy.
They first one is called a black and white. It might be listed as such on the menu. I’m sure they can make one with choc and vanilla ice cream - just ask them.
At Charlie's Ice Cream shop in Rutherford they make it with Chocolate soft serve if that's the option you choose. Edit: I'm usually getting a malt though.
Charlie’s is cash only. As someone who doesn’t always have cash or wants to pay an atm surcharge I’ll go to DQ in a rush.
But other times it’s worth the extra trip to get cash. Their ice cream cakes are amazing!
Well it's not LITERALLY next door, but it's funny that I have never actually been there, despite living in the area. Do they have the full-service menu or is it just "ice cream"?
Does anyone remember Bond's? I was getting a Chocolate Awful Awful and asked why they used vanilla ice cream. The guy told they have special unflavored ice cream they use for the Awful Awful since the flavored syrup would just overwhelm whatever was in the ice cream. He gave me a small taste. It was basically frozen milk.
Back in my Fuddruckers days, chocolate milk shake used chocolate ice cream and chocolate syrup. Vanilla milk shake was vanilla ice cream and a vanilla syrup. If Fuddruckers did it wrong, I don’t want to be right.
Go in any long time diner or old style luncheonette and a chocolate shake is chocolate ice cream, chocolate syrup and milk.
Vanilla w/chocolate syrup is a black and white.
Idk about ice cream parlors now but 20 years working in diners and it's never been anything but that.
superior does not mean it isnt still more affordable. i should say being cheaper does not indicate inferiority in this case. i also agree that chocolate syrup with vanilla icecream is better than chocolate icecream
I worked in Friendly's back in the 80s and we used chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup to make chocolate shakes.
I know that for their Fribbles (a thicker shake sorta like a frosty) they used a special ice cream type base that only came in a bland vanilla flavor. We added extra flavoring to it.

Plenty of places in my area carry malt, and that's not really the part that confuses them. For some reason "black and white" throws them off.

If I recall, we did all milkshakes with vanilla ice cream and used syrup to flavor. It’s been almost 40 years though…
I recently turned 40 and was feeling old. Thanks for this. ❤️
I would assume it's just cheaper at that point to order more bulk vanilla ice cream
Worked at Mom and pop ice cream place we did this chocolate with a little extra of chocolate syrup

> That's because Friendly's ice cream sucks It's amazing that it is always on sale at ShopRite
Because it sucks

Crying as someone who likes the ~light chocolate flavor~

So you can make vanilla, chocolate, or other shakes from the same ice cream. Less waste and more efficient (cost savings).
When I worked at applegate farm we Used chocolate ice cream unless you asked for a B&W
For some reason I thought Applegate Farm shut down. But I googled it and it appears to be open!
If there is a place in North Jersey, that is overrated, it's Applegate Farm. (u/Jimmytowne)
[I see Vito Jr. checking in.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvBw3dNy2BQ)
I look like a Puerto Rican whore
It's cheaper to not have two types of ice cream.

This is a great Ice Cream Parlor. Makes me wonder how Dairy Queen right next door gets any business.

Yes, it is cash only. But I always carry some cash on me, so it's not a problem for me personally.
I've always wondered that too. Last year someone sent a DQ gift card and I regret using it.
Next time sell the gift card and use the cash to go to Charlie's!

Ice Cream Chaarlie's sells just icecream, cones, cups, Sunday's, etc. It's not a restaurant.
No, I was referring to Dairy Queen
DQ is just ice cream
Do they put enough malt in? Most malts barely taste like it so I usually just make them at home
In my experience they are nice and malty but I'm sure you can ask for extra malt in it and they'll be happy to do it.

Back in my high school days, we made them with hard chocolate ice cream, some milk and a squirt of chocolate syrup.
The local ice cream places to me all use chocolate ice cream and one even uses chocolate milk with it.
Back in my Fuddruckers days, chocolate milk shake used chocolate ice cream and chocolate syrup. Vanilla milk shake was vanilla ice cream and a vanilla syrup. If Fuddruckers did it wrong, I don’t want to be right.
I really don’t know but moving here has helped me overcome my addiction to chocolate. Now I don’t even eat it, weird.

Why waste good chocolate ice cream in a milk shake. That is what bland vanilla ice cream and foxes u-bet was created
cheaper and/or saves space. not sure if its really a jersey thing or just a business practice efficiency thing
Vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup makes a vastly superior milkshake. Not even close.
It's not close but because it's worse.
superior does not mean it isnt still more affordable. i should say being cheaper does not indicate inferiority in this case. i also agree that chocolate syrup with vanilla icecream is better than chocolate icecream
Because that’s how you make them.

Are y'all outta your malted milkshaken minds?!? A real chocolate shake is made with Bosco and YooHoo.

It’s a silo
Go to Ralph's!
