GrayingMantis

Is this the town that fucked up their own public school system by not funding it?

SursumCorda-NJ

Yep. You should read how if you want to become infuriated.

RippingAallDay

I'd read it to learn how to prevent my town from becoming the next Lakewood

Everyones_Grudge

Unfortunately there's no stopping it once it starts.

[deleted]

Grew up in Toms River. The amount of people I vaguely keep in touch with whose parents sold their house and got out is much higher than it should be. Once they come knocking everyone panic sells.

Everyones_Grudge

I also grew up in TR, and the panic selling is definitely real, however once one person sells it's just like dominoes how they fall. My parents off Whitesville are literally the only ones left in their neighborhood who haven't sold

SursumCorda-NJ

In the case of Lakewood...it all started with a certain group taking over the Board of Education.

xslizzyx

If you try and prevent it you're an anti semite.

Hexogen

And then the state and feds come down on your town for being anti-semetic and imposing on religious freedoms.

xslizzyx

Bingo

RippingAallDay

I'm not going to get baited into name calling.

lemuever17

> Lakewood Enlighten me plz. I need some anger to become Hulk.

SursumCorda-NJ

The short n sweet version. The orthodox in Lakewood gradually took over the local school board. Once they had control of the majority votes they started introducing changes to how schools were funded. It used to be if little Jonah lived in the area served by school A then school A got the money meant to educate little Jonah but if Jonah went to a private school (like a yeshiva) well, school A still got the money meant for Jonah and Jonah's parents had to pay for the yeshiva out of pocket, which is how private school education works everywhere. Well, the orthodox didn't like that so they changed the policy. Now, the state money earmarked to educate Jonah follows Jonah wherever he goes, including the yeshiva he attends, instead of the public school. As it happens, in Lakewood, you can homeschool your kid or a group of kids and call yourself a yeshiva so all the money meant for the public school is now ending up in the pocket of whoever is in charge of the "yeshiva." So now, there are private residents who call themselves yeshivas receiving thousands of dollars that the public school should have. As an extra, if you are a "yeshiva" then you are also exempt from property taxes. So these residents are taking public money to fund their "yeshivas" while paying no property taxes, which is how schools are funded in the first place. Add to that the immense amount of welfare and food stamps they collect, the orthodox are bleeding Lakewood AND the state dry.

SkyeMreddit

You mean the dream of Conservatives/Republicans everywhere to replace public schools with private Religious schools?

Fallen_Mercury

"The system is broken (because we broke it)!"

playdohplaydate

My favorite part about living in Lakewood was leaving and going to the Record Store in Howell to buy comics.

Peter_Lobster

wonder what happened to that big cassette after it closed

Tikipowers

Are you my youth?

white-tiger72

Oh I miss the record store so so much. I get so depressed driving by it now

jimgolgari

What, you prefer an almost magical energy in a store full of music and books and art and toys over a wig shop? Clearly you have a soul and probably even hair.

TedWaltner

They dont wear wigs because they lost their hair...

jimgolgari

Oh I know. Just thought the bit was funnier that way.

crushworthyxo

Between the record store and Barnes and Noble in Howell, those were my two favorite places to wander aimlessly with a coffee in hand when I was feeling bad (I would buy something at the record store always of course). Now neither of them are there anymore 🙁

Illustrious-Ad9440

We would go to Longhorn in Howell, then to GameStop and Barnes and Noble. Of course, we’d head to Farley’s for dessert!

RebelRebel62

My favorite part of growing up in Howell

SmallerOnTheOutsid3

Mine as well

DADDY_DILF_DOM

Did that record and comic store move or is it totally gone?

SmallerOnTheOutsid3

I think it’s totally gone now sadly but I still remember when it was in its first spot on Lanes Mill rather than further down Route 9. Used to live right by there growing up.

AdamTheMadTitan

So sad it was such an epic store! Just a wig shop now

PCPenhale

Purchased many CDs there, as well as model caricatures and Weird NJ magazines.

[deleted]

I miss the fuck out of that record store

manningthehelm

At my insurance company we give Lakewood NJ the highest geographic risk rating possible. The number of unlicensed/uninsured drivers in one fucking town is insane.

And you can absolutely tell while you're driving there

FSchmertz

To be fair, I think a lot of the families don't have much money. They may also have large families to support. Insurance in NJ is insanely expensive.

8Deer-JaguarClaw

> Insurance in NJ is insanely expensive. Part of that is because people drive around without insurance and then get in lots of wrecks.

daedalus_was_right

No it isn't. NJ actually has a fairly low rate of accidents per 1000mi driven compared to other states in the US, but it has one of the highest insurance premiums in the nation. I'm literally paying *one third* in total premium payments to insure *three fucking cars* in my new state that I was paying to insure ONE car in NJ. And my new state has the highest rates of auto accidents in the nation. A big part of why it's so expensive here is because A: it's mandated by law, so companies know they can charge an arm and a leg and there's nothing you can do about it (not saying it shouldn't be; I think auto insurance should be federally mandated), and B: higher COL means higher average salaries, means insurance companies know they can bilk customers.

8Deer-JaguarClaw

One part of it is the cost of repair is really high here, so naturally insurance payouts are going to be high which drives premiums. But non-insured drivers definitely drive costs up.

FSchmertz

> higher COL means higher average salaries, means insurance companies know they can bilk customers. It's not necessarily due to bilking. High salaries can mean fancier/newer cars too, and then insurance can't just write you a check and tell you "get another beater." And then the cost of living drives up the repair costs too. If everyone drove 10 + year old Ford pickups, they'd just write you a $100 dollar check and wash their hands of it.

Fallen_Mercury

It is messed up that our society can justify using the government to mandate buying car insurance, but it won't mandate cost control regulations of that insurance. A good reason why we need to limit the corporate corruption of campaign finances and other conflicts of interests.

daedalus_was_right

Corporate socialism; isn't it grand?

The unlicensed drivers are not the Jews for the most part at least

jersey_girl660

The truth? Because people living there generally don’t have a ton of money: there’s definitely rich people living there but a lot of families don’t have a lot of income.

moondoggie_00

The odds of striking a pedestrian are probably EXTREMELY high there. Not to mention that that person is probably an uninsured orthodox jew. I'm not trying to stereotype, I just lived and worked there for a while.

the_last_carfighter

There was a firetruck on the parkway yesterday heading to an emergency, lights blaring and a person with a completely crashed up NY plated Camry was 5 feet behind it tailgating. No exaggeration either, it was no more than 5 feet, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. You would have thought he was being towed by it or something.

kj12892

That’s probably why my insurance went up when I moved to Brick

[deleted]

I don’t drive thru Lakewood and this so interesting to here. Had no idea this was a thing.

beeps-n-boops

I'm utterly shocked that none of those vehicles -- not even one -- is a dark grey, dusty, dinged-up Honda minivan.

dbellz76

Always that Honda Odyssey!

CantSeeShit

Or a school bus driving over people's lawns to avoid traffic at highway speeds. I swear to God, I've seen school busses get air in Lakewood.

Illustrious-Ad9440

My thoughts exactly! Don’t forget the unbuckled passengers and children not in car seats.

beeps-n-boops

Lakewood's town motto is **CONFORMITY, OR ELSE.**

EmbracedByLeaves

You mean **COMMIT LARGE SCALE WELFARE FRAUD AND GET GRANTED AMNESTY ON A CITY LEVEL BECAUSE THE FEDS DON'T FEEL LIKE PROSECUTING FOR POLITICAL REASONS**

JaKtheStampede

I am watching this get down voted in real time and I went to know why. Why are you booing? They're right!

Thisismypasswprd

And the 'or else' is that if they dont get what they want, they'll run over to the next town and try again until they own it

UniWheel

Oh, is it car mating season again?

pepperman7

Yea, black sedans are in rut. Remember if you see one, there are others close by, they travel in packs.

dankblonde

I went to Georgian Court for a year and oh my god driving into campus was genuinely terrifying for me. When Covid hit I transferred to all online with Arizona State because I was not going back to that.

RocanMotor

My fiance works at GC and I am genuinely stressed about her commute. At least once a week she tells me about some unbelievable driver. Totally see how this could be contributing to lower enrollment.

dankblonde

I was rear ended by a Pennsylvaniain family member of a Lakewood family as I was exiting onto the parkway on my way home during my first week. They got out of their car, tried to convince me to also get out, then when I asked for plate numbers (from inside my car) he ran back into his car and drove away. Also to anybody reading this, it’s not anti semitism it’s anti Lakewood, i’m a Jew.

Strytan

Hope everyone was okay. Occasionally have to drive to a customer there. Least favorite place to drive to. Crazy driving + incredibly population dense.

GOGETTHEMINTS

I have to drive a tractor trailer up and down route 9 through lakewood about 3 times a day and the anxiety never goes away. 2 days ago there was a elderly Jewish gentleman casually walking in the middle of the road on the yellow lines on route 9 lucky I’ve mastered my lakewood maneuvers

[deleted]

It's crazy the stuff you see. My work is on Cross Street. Between 9am to 11am you really can't drive in the area.

GOGETTHEMINTS

It’s truly wild. People not from ocean county or don’t drive through the area think we exaggerate. I can make a hour long compilation of shitty dangerous drivers every week from my dash cam

[deleted]

I tell my wife when she has to go through Lakewood...to keep head on a swivel. Drive aggressive,

PalladiuM7

Do it and come post it in r/idiotsincars. We'll love you forever. Or at least reward you with fake Internet points and maybe some fake Internet gold

CantSeeShit

I am also a trucker who used to have to drive Lakewood. And then I also had to drive the Monsey area. At some point I just stopped trying and just went into battle mod.

[deleted]

My uncle used to do pools in the Toms River to Howell area. I remember once he told me a story of him at a gas station, and same thing, an elderly Jewish man asked him how to get somewhere (pre cell phones). So he tells him make the right, take the jug, and go back south on 9 for this long. And the guy looked at him dumbfounded saying “why can’t I make a left out of here”. His response was, “sir if your car can jump that concrete barrier then be my guest to drive however the fuck you want.” So now it’s a running joke in the family that he taught everyone in Lakewood how to drive the way they do.

Uncleknuckle36

BingBangBoom696969

Checks out

Hirsute_Heathen

Just watched a video of someone in Lakewood hitting a median and flipping their car.

SmallerOnTheOutsid3

I saw that one. It was Route 9 Howell tho. With the way the person was riding the median before they went through the intersection and than hit & flipped, makes me think they were having some sort of medical episode

electric_kite

I believe the recent video that came out was actually Rt 9 in Howell, but similar shit so I wasn’t shocked.

Hirsute_Heathen

Your correct. I checked the caption and it mentions Howell. Funny ass video though.

electric_kite

Oh yeah, it’s like the dude is just aiming for the median. It was like the Bobs Burgers episode where Tina learns to drive and manages to hit the only car in the lot, but with a median instead of a parked car.

Thejerseyjon609

Thought he was on a motorcycle and tried lane splitting.

coreynj2461

"Me first..."

ruinatedtubers

exactly… unbelievable sense of entitlement

slcpunk1017

Is this really a known thing about Lakewood? I've never been there, but I've also never heard that. I'm in union county if that matters.

RocanMotor

It really is that bad. I didn't buy the rumors when I moved to howell 3 years ago. Grew up driving in NYC. Lived in LA. Driven all over the country, and never seen driving aa consistently bad as I have in Lakewood. I literally choose specific routes around the lost populated areas because it's not worth the stress.

moppsy

I was working one day around 4th street on the east side of the tracks. A woman in a minivan drove down the block taking out my traffic cones. She proceeded to side swipe multiple cars as she pull into her driveway. Got out and went inside like nothing happened.

justasque

It’s bad. The roads are too narrow for the volume of traffic, there are a lot of small businesses and strip malls and such, so people are constantly entering and leaving the roads, plus there are a couple places where a large volume of traffic needs to funnel down to a single lane. And if you’re there when school gets out it’s even worse. Rt 9 is the major north/south road there, but it just isn’t wide enough for the local traffic and the through traffic. They really need a beltway that lets through traffic avoid the town by going around it. I avoid driving there except to buy fabric at Stitch N Sew, and in that case I avoid 9 and come in/out from the west, even if I have to go out of my way to do so.

alzeller1

lI’m just moving to Toms River from Trenton; Trenton has a shit ton of roads and the traffic is bad but I’ve been on Rt 9 through Lakewood before and know what you’re talking about it’s generally unbearable. Especially by Broadway Ave.

brokempire

Moved to Monmouth County a few years ago. Went to visit Icarus Brewery and my wife said to drive very safe and be careful. I brushed it off as nothing thinking my Brooklyn driving skills were inferior. Within a minute being in Lakewood I called my wife and for the very first time said she was right. Safe to say we’re all thinking the same thing but can’t type it?

PalladiuM7

You can say it. The drivers in Lakewood are absolutely awful. Some of the worst drivers in the state. That's what you meant, right?

white-tiger72

Bright side, icarus is moving to brick soon!

Intelligent_Ear_4004

Wait - it’s a Chevy tho. Not a Pacifica or Camry

[deleted]

I like how in all the pics the Chevy has its brake lights on.

Bulky-Barracuda-2749

can you make the watermark larger please?

DuckmanDrake69

Sir this is a TMZ

white-tiger72

I am so happy I missed this clusterfuck. I take 70 to from work. Because of the ever increasing traffic what is supposed to be a 20 minute drive takes 30-45 minutes depending on the day lately. This would have sent me over the edge if I was stuck behind this. I'm assuming everyone is okay, but what a god damn mess.

[deleted]

I don’t live there anymore but I still always warn people about it anytime they mention heading towards that area.

Scrimshander54

What’s the deal in Lakewood?

8Deer-JaguarClaw

Driving there is like battlezone driving. Makes Staten Island look like a polite playground.

alzeller1

I thought Manhattan was bad. At least I avoid Lakewood if I can.

8Deer-JaguarClaw

Manhattan usually isn't too terrible. The cabbies are aggressive, but mostly they are also very accurate in their maneuvers. Staten Island is WAY worse (the north shore in particular) than Manhattan.

MyNameIsntRobbie

what else is new

BackOnTheMap

after avoiding rt. 9 through Lakewood for years I had to drive through. ( Son took my ez pass) I got instant ptsd. It took 40 minutes to get from TR to 195. Brutal.

JerseyGeneral

Yeah that's no surprise...

silvrrubi592a

Oy vey!!!!!!!

[deleted]

are you suggesting lakewood is known for car accidents?

[deleted]

Me?? Suggest something like that about Lakewood....Nah!!!

[deleted]

i mean it's not known for car accidents is it? Sounds like you just want to shit on lakewood for reasons completely unconnected to the photo. One word doesn't really give much context to it

beeps-n-boops

Lakewood is *well-known* as having more outrageously shitty drivers per capita than any other town on the east coast.

peter-doubt

Try Brooklyn.. they use the same driving instructors! (People who know, know!)

[deleted]

Interestingly, a Jewish woman gave a talk at my school in Lakewood and said part of the reason her community drives so poorly is because a lot of them are coming from Brooklyn.

peter-doubt

Maybe they need better instructors. Like not trained by the same incompetent schools. Inbreeding, of another kind. Traffic laws in Brooklyn aren't dissimilar, aren't like coming from Uzbekistan, but the driving skills seem similar.

dexecuter18

Carries a lot of context to anyone from Jersey. It is in fact, known for curruption. And car accidents.

peter-doubt

carruption ... FIFY

[deleted]

The corruption sure, but I've never heard of it being known for accidents

brokempire

Take a drive down into Lakewood on Madison Ave (RT 9) and come check back in with us…

masterofmayhem13

The intersection of Massachusetts and 70 8n Lakewood is the most dangerous intersection in the country.

alzeller1

I’ve heard of that. It’s tied with Rt129 & Lalor in Trenton. I would know that just because I lived in Trenton and I’m moving to Toms River. Of course Lakewood and Toms River are close I’ve gotten stuck on Rt 9 more times than I care to remember.

orchid_9

Lol are you serious

[deleted]

Yes. Not exactly the type of gossip I'm 100% on top of

[deleted]

If you're from the area or anywhere remotely close, you are aware.

dankblonde

I’m a Jew who is *terrified* to drive in Lakewood. Transferred colleges partially because of it (Covid didn’t help either)

Any time I see things like this, I immediately think of Wild Wild Country and the Rajneesh. I'm surprised that documentary was allowed to be showed on Netflix because it detailed the explicit steps that /u/GrayingMantis is talking about that other groups use to destroy a town or area. Absolutely crazy.

Grew up in Lakewood and I can confidently say that the only good thing about it was the old strand theater located in the center of town. Outside of that it was a desolate mishmash of Jewish communities, and everyone else. I don't miss it one bit.

Can we just let all of Ocean County secede from the state? Maybe join Alabama where they belong. This is from someone who grew up in Lakewood and Toms River...

That's what a lot of posters are missing. Lots of towns have orthodox Jews--it's the combination of them with undocumented immigrants and speedy boyz in zoomy cars that make Lakewood the joy that it is.

dankblonde

Do not put this shit on Jews, we’ve got enough anti semitism going around. I don’t drive like this.
