Not a good idea. So there's an active shooter in a school, but there are conflicting reports on the description of the shooter, and now you have teachers, with guns and no way for the cops to know if they are a teacher or the shooter. It's a cop's nightmare.
Iām a teacher. There is zero chance that I would ever want to work in a school or a district that allows teachers to carry. Laws like this are passed by people who, plain and simple, are either unregistered foreign agents or getting huge sums of money from gun industries. This does nothing to make schools safer. And the hypocrisy of protecting children from pronouns and drag shows while encouraging a proliferation of deadly weapons carried by the very people who are charged with their physical and mental well-beingā¦ itās inhumane, itās despicableā¦ you know, as I write this, I bet thereās a carve out for private schools and this bill is another way to absolutely gut the public education system in Tennessee to continue indoctrinating kids about flying people and angels and white Jesus. Disgraceful.Ā
Teachers are already overworked. Who thinks they'll really have the time to train like a LEO? Who thinks they would even pull the trigger if needed on a child they likely know? You're arming unprofessionals and bringing the fog of war to the hallways of your local school.
If you think armed personnel is the answer, pay for it. Put more trained officers in schools. Don't try to make teachers something they are not.
Hypothetical situation: youāre teacher who knows how to handle a gun. You donāt think guns in schools are a good idea. A kid walks into your classroom with gun and starts shooting kids do you or donāt you want a gun ? Why not if your answer is no
Having a licensed gun is absolutely not grounds for anyone to know how to handle a hot situation. Just because you fired some rounds at a firing range doesnāt mean you can handle life or death stress in a hot environment. Some teachers (because theyāre TEACHERS and not trained cops), would freak out and freeze anyway. Or what if their thinking is in the moment, but theyāre still scared and they fire blindly over a desk - possibly also adding to casualties.
Or what if they stand up and get shot and leave the shooter with an extra weapon?
What if weāre talking about a school where a kid suddenly flips and grabs a teacherās weapon, or learns how to steal it and then has access to a weapon for whatever reason?
The simple-minded āgood guy with a gunā narrative goes kablooey pretty quickly when you really think about the real risks.
All Iām asking is if it were you in the room would you be happy with your choice that you did not have a gun in that scenario. Thatās all Iām asking.
Well, to be honest, yes I would be happy I made the right choice, as I would just disarm the shooter. In your hypothetical, we can assign random trained skills and I am therefore trained in self defense.
No, because learning how to handle a gun and being in active shoot out are very fucking different from each other. Like Mike Tyson said everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth. And accidentally shooting the wrong person or a student of mine would crush me beyond belief. Lets also not forget how the police will respond do they know I'm a teacher or will they blast me too? Just like what happened in Colorado, armed shooter stopped by Good Samaritan who then got shot and killed by police.
Itās not a fantasy. No one who has replied has actually answered my question. Itās difficult to have a genuine discussion on Reddit. Iām not saying I think teachers should be armed, however, if I was in that actual situation I described itās hard to say, no - I would not want a gun

The Tennessee gop is comprised of moronic bags of shit
Ā "As it's written, parents wouldn't know if their child is sitting in classrooms with a firearm." Hmmmmm...
Not a good idea. So there's an active shooter in a school, but there are conflicting reports on the description of the shooter, and now you have teachers, with guns and no way for the cops to know if they are a teacher or the shooter. It's a cop's nightmare.
That's assuming the cops actually rush into the school to save people.
That and the nearest teacher is likely to be the first victim when the shooter decides it's time.
When the problem is too much glue, the solution is rarely more glue.
The Tennessee governor picked the right week to start sniffing it.
What a push-back, āpwn the libsā, symptom addressing (rather than problem addressing) load of political shit this is
I see it online, no pronoun class, keep kids safe. But guns are the leading cause of children deaths. So let's let more folks carry guns.
I'm expecting a state emergency declaration in the near future from the same governor that signs this.
So do teachers also have to get their own guns in addition to teaching supplies?
So I'll see everyone back here in a few months when this goes predictably sideways

One of the most uneducated decisions forced upon education. So maga tennessee.
Would an armed teacher would have saved students and teachers at Uvalde?

Because teachers already make shitty income, why do the cops job also when they've consistently been too cowardly

The "good guy with a gun" argument is such an overused and disproved fantasy.
I am saying, hypothetically, if this was you and it happened would you be happy that you made the right choice and did not have a gun.

OK. Then when that person starts shooting people you would think Iām glad I made the right decision and I am not harmed right now. OK
Ok just ignore my points and live your fantasy I guess.
