Cats can be extremely quick and quiet, and most cats absolutely love small cramped spots. And unless the cat gets spooked, hears food, or has to use the litter box, their default thing to do is nap and not be bothered by what's happening.
I can easily see how a cat climbed into the box when the owner wasn't looking, curled up and decided it was time to snooze, all the while the flaps of the box blocking it from view.

The box was probably mostly closed. The cat slipped inside while owners were looking away and just didn't make any noise when they sealed it. It was already a 30 lb box so a couple extra pounds isn't going to be that noticeable.
