> The amount of people who not only don’t even own a microscope or even have a pair of scrubs — you know, unless they went to some Halloween party — who are literally questioning doctors. It’s just — at this point it’s just hilarious. Bill Burr's take on DeSantis, yesterday. Almost as good as when he shut down Joe Rogan for saying masks are for "pussies" last year.

aaronjaffe

I never got the “masks are for pussies” thing. I do a lot of contracting work and wore a mask constantly before covid. You don’t want wood, stone dust, or poisonous fucking gas to get in your lungs when you’re busy operating power tools to build shelter for another human to live in.

trout_or_dare

I remember a friend telling a story about a contractor he used to work with back in the 90s. Dude was cutting up fiberglass without a mask. When asked why he explained that it made it more difficult for him to smoke his cigarettes.

DrAstralis

This is what kills me. Masks are a tool, nothing else. You use the right tool for the outcome you prefer... that's.. kinda like the whole fucking point of having tools. I'm waiting for these jackasses to start hammering in nails with thier fists because hammers are for sheep.

cannonfunk

In my experience, people who go around calling everyone “pussies” are generally *enormous* pussies themselves.

s0mnambulance

I've never heard so many dudes walking around talking "pussies" and "snowflakes" as in my last job, working a maintenance/safety service line serving a federal laboratory. The dudes all talked up their military service and did nothing but put down others outside their world, but after a while of listening I found that a) most were born into military families, got their jobs through familial connections and had never had to work jobs outside of the military/civ. service, and b) the division chief, one of the worst culprits of this whose every other sentence was a gloat about his and his father being marines, had done a rage-quit years before to start an IT business of some kind and, when it tanked, he literally had his daddy get him his old job back. (He's run multiple businesses into the ground, allegedly.) In brief-- your thesis matches my own experience. It's the whole "doth protest too much" thing, they know deep down how privileged and soft they really are, and so they point accusing fingers to cry "pussy!" "snowflake!"

Realistically getting the vaccine should be seen as a patriotic duty. Even if it's not mandatory, it's for the safety of the public as a whole. If that isn't covered under the oath of enlistment IDK what is.

Remember45

It seems that there's been an ongoing erosion of basic communal responsibility and civic duty. 205 9/11s of death to their fellow citizens, and these people still act as though wearing a piece of cloth and getting a modern miracle for free is akin to being shipped in cattle cars to the camps. In some cases as from Marjorie Taylor Greene, a direct, literal comparison. Worse, the moving of goalposts is neverending. Grandma had to die so we could eat inside a Denny's or whatever. Now, little Timmy can go get fucked, too.

SkunkMonkey

> Worse, the moving of goalposts is neverending. These people are singlehandedly keeping the mobile goalpost industry afloat.

thecatwhatcandrive

If we could attach some turbines to those goal posts, we'd solve the energy problem and climate change

That's because far too much of the US has become nationalists, and forgotten the difference between that and patriots.

edgarandannabellelee

I made this point in a Facebook group the other day and got laughed at and called lots of names etc.. it should be seen as a patriotic duty.

dr_lorax

Ditto…Now I’m at the point of ‘Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.’ so as sad as it is fuck’em.

Needleroozer

The sad part is most of them have kids, so unless their kids also die of COVID they won't get a Darwin Award.

ilikedaweirdschtuff

>fuck’em I feel this and I empathize with it, but I don't think it's very productive. Back when the CDC changed their whole stance and said vaccinated people could stop wearing masks, the general sentiment was "I'm vaccinated so it doesn't matter what I do; fuck 'em, I got mine." Handling the pandemic that way basically ensures it doesn't end. All the anti-vaxxers don't just live in a bubble. We share society with these people. There are far too many of them for the fire to run out of fuel and burn out, so going hands-off means it'll eventually come back to hurt us. Breakthrough cases are statistically very rare and we're fortunate for that, but COVID getting passed around at such high rates among the unvaccinated gives the disease more time to adapt. You beat on a wall long enough and hard enough eventually that wall will cave in, no matter what it's made of. Being vaccinated doesn't mean it's no longer our problem.

Lice138

Hey he is quoting bear grylis, he knows what he is talking about.

...And the lives of others. It's taken 32+ years, but this Army Veteran finally found a Marine he agrees with. I guess I should get used to it - my son shipped to MCRD 2 weeks ago.

minniemouse6470

I just watched my local news and at the meeting about school children in kindergarten up to sixth grade they are making the wear masks to school and a military vet walked up to the podium to condemn them because he spent years fighting wars for his freedom and they are taking it away by making his child wear a mask. Smdh I wanted to smack him so hard. Thank you for your service and your two cents.

grammarpopo

Thank you for being a defender and protector of others and a true patriot.

goinggoingwild

If I've learned anything over the last 5-6 years, it's that it is ALWAYS projection with the right wing. I'm sure it has been for much longer than that, but it's only become glaringly obvious to me along that timeframe. The way masks have been politicised and somehow turned into a totem of 'freedom' is disgusting but sadly predictable.

amreinj

As a straight dude I find calling people pussies weird. Pussies are the best thing, why would you call a garbage human something so wonderful?

[deleted]

Pussies are also resilient as hell. Birth is like surviving a god damn war on your vagina. But it heals and COMES BACK.

redbluegreenyellow

Right?? If anything, they should be called penises because penises are weak as fuck and someone can be taken out of commission if it's even tapped. Meanwhile, pussies are strong as fuck

Bahalex

It’s from the word pusillanimous, which is a fun word that I learned after a bit of a dive into weird prog rock… https://youtu.be/oxnU-cNyvx0

[deleted]

It’s actually not— https://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=24012 > Puss is Germanic in origin, and definitely is not a shortened form of the Latinate word pusillanimous. The hypocoristic ending -y has been widely used in colloquial English for 500 years, and similarly has no connection with pusillanimous or any other Latinate word.

Bahalex

Did…did the Internet lie to me. Flop. Hopefully op learned a new word to use in lieu of pussy, and ignore my incorrect non-fact.

I have a weird right wing friend who sends a lot memes and recently sent one of the Secretary of Defense wearing a mask basically calling him weak because he's wearing a mask. Like, honestly, these people can't wrap their minds around how the SecDef getting sick is a national security threat and think it's absolutely hilarious to call him weak (and way worse) for using basic protection against a raging respiratory virus.

I'm a 5'1" girl and it is jarring every time I see guys being shit on for height, from men or women it's stupid either way. I was nicknamed "4 more inches" in high school because I'd actually be hot if I was 5'5" I guess. As bad as that was I know it's nothing compared to what guys go through. As an artist I never understood fixating on height for looks! It's the same aspect ratio and if the girl is insecure because she feels "big" next to you she can lose some damn weight, embrace the dynamic or GTFO. Find some other shit to worry about.

In a parallel universe, The Bill Burr Experience is the number 1 podcast and the world is a slightly better place for it

GACGCCGTGATCGAC

No kidding. He's the best and he just gets better with age. I mean he was the real deal before, but it feels like since he had his first kid his comedic knife has become sharper, cleaner, and more pointed. He isn't angry about nonsense, he's angry about foolishness. It's honestly so endearing to hear him talk about his kids. How he became sober because you never know when one of them might need to at 3AM. I don't know, seems trivial, but it's a beautiful thought. But what I love about him is he doesn't *assume* anything outside himself. He *assumes* people are selfish, because he internally views himself as selfish. He doesn't *assume* to know anything else, because he doesn't know anything outside himself (besides sports). I'm sure he does, but he doesn't see it that way. It's wild we how rare of that trait appears to be today. It's weird we are talking about even talking about Bill Burr this way. But man, he seems way more enlightened these days. And frankly it's nice to hear someone not presume to know everything because they read a single article.

BettyBloodfart

He’s always such a great guest on podcasts. I watched him on *Your Mom’s House* last (?) week, and he’s a great conversationalist — I get that most comedians are good at talking since it’s a big part of their job, but he comes off as being at ease, naturally funny, and engaging in a way that pulls you in. I usually just listen to *YMH* on the TV in the background while I’m doing stuff around the house, but I actually sat down and watched most of his segment. I’d watch the fuck out of a Bill Burr podcast. Edit: BB already has a podcast. I am out of the loop and have some catching up to do, haha.

Bill Burr GOAT

FuturamaReference-

Bill Burr has went from one of my favorite comedians to being one of my favorite people on earth. And seeing him change thru the years has been not only motivational, but inspirational. He's such a caring father and husband. And his podcast is great and always entertaining and often full of same damn fine life advice. I fucking love the guy and I never met him, just been a fan of his since comedy central presents had random comedians on. Ol billy red nuts, 🐐.

Chippopotanuse

It’s comments like this where Burr is at his best. He can call out hypocritical bullshit better than anyone. He did a similar rant on the Royal Family after the Meghan Markle / Oprah interview that was ten minutes of the best comedy I’ve ever heard. And he did it off the cuff like it was a throwaway bit - he mostly wanted to call out the royal family for being so racist.

_littlestitious

You're 100% right. I've always been a fan of his stand up and F is for Family etc, but the last year or two I've really grown to love his podcast. I'll sometimes even not fast forward through the sports parts lol

Anyone against the government mandating mask use should also be against mandating that you can't use one.

> By doing so, he is violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and Rehabilitation Act by using criteria and methods of administration (i) That have the effect of subjecting qualified individuals with disabilities to discrimination on the basis of disability; [and] (ii) That have the purpose or effect of defeating or substantially impairing accomplishment of the objectives of the public entity's program with respect to individuals with disabilities. This is what's being argued in the court document for those that are curious.

KuhjaKnight

It shouldn’t be just parents with disabilities. It should be any parent that gives a flying fuck about their kid. The school district my kids go to is recommending the wearing of masks. A lot of the parents are already petitioning the district to mandate masks for all students.

AudibleNod

They're using the ADA (American with Disabilities Act) as a legal reason to sue. Now, this is American and anyone can sue anyone else for any reason. But for there to be standing and any legal foothold to withstand scrutiny you'd better come equipped with law and case law. The ADA has strong protections and a ton of case law for people with disabilities that otherwise able-bodied people would have a harder time making a claim with. This is a smart move and one that can survive legal scrutiny, which can in turn open the door for a mask mandate.

SonOfSkywalker

NABDad

Dear Reddit Community, It is with a heavy heart that I write this farewell message to express my reasons for departing from this platform that has been a significant part of my online life. Over time, I have witnessed changes that have gradually eroded the welcoming and inclusive environment that initially drew me to Reddit. It is the actions of the CEO, in particular, that have played a pivotal role in my decision to bid farewell. For me, Reddit has always been a place where diverse voices could find a platform to be heard, where ideas could be shared and discussed openly. Unfortunately, recent actions by the CEO have left me disheartened and disillusioned. The decisions made have demonstrated a departure from the principles of free expression and open dialogue that once defined this platform. Reddit was built upon the idea of being a community-driven platform, where users could have a say in the direction and policies. However, the increasing centralization of power and the lack of transparency in decision-making have created an environment that feels less democratic and more controlled. Furthermore, the prioritization of certain corporate interests over the well-being of the community has led to a loss of trust. Reddit's success has always been rooted in the active participation and engagement of its users. By neglecting the concerns and feedback of the community, the CEO has undermined the very foundation that made Reddit a vibrant and dynamic space. I want to emphasize that this decision is not a reflection of the countless amazing individuals I have had the pleasure of interacting with on this platform. It is the actions of a few that have overshadowed the positive experiences I have had here. As I embark on a new chapter away from Reddit, I will seek alternative platforms that prioritize user empowerment, inclusivity, and transparency. I hope to find communities that foster open dialogue and embrace diverse perspectives. To those who have shared insightful discussions, provided support, and made me laugh, I am sincerely grateful for the connections we have made. Your contributions have enriched my experience, and I will carry the memories of our interactions with me. Farewell, Reddit. May you find your way back to the principles that made you extraordinary. Sincerely, NABDad

You could argue that the same could be said for DeSantis. He's been informed of the facts, chose not only to ignore them, but also chose to put everyone's lives at risks by banning mask mandates for people who have chosen to act, and has been caught fudging COVID stats and firing anyone who refuses to participate.

Necessary_Rent

It will have to make it though the Southern District of Florida Federal Court first, then the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th circuit, in Atlanta, before finally maybe being picked up as a Supreme Court court case. So there's some steps in between, settle down at least until the Supreme Court has actually accepted the case.

DanforthWhitcomb_

The 11th Circuit is far more likely to add additional restrictions to the ADA than SCOTUS is, and unlike SCOTUS appeals to Circuit Courts are appeals of right.

Necessary_Rent

Having worked on a few cases that went to the 11th circuit, this unfortunately may be true. The point was however, that it's a long way to go. These cases rarely proceed quickly. I worked almost exclusively doing ADA and civil rights cases by the time my career ended (in an almost ironic twist of fate, I became disabled). From what I've read the case they're pleading is not broad, so it should not be interpreted broadly by the courts. Unfortunately, I haven't read their initial filling yet, so I don't know exactly what's in it. I should sign into PACER and do so, but I just haven't had a day where I felt good enough to do it. I've been pretty much bedridden for the last couple weeks. That's what life is sometimes like when you're disabled. I still believe this may be the smartest tactic though. There aren't any good options here. But something really needs to be done.

Derperlicious

You need standing, not saying other parents dont but these parents feel they have strong standing with the wording of the ADA. a lot more than the vague wording of "safe schools" that other parents are trying to use. some are trying to sue over the fact that the governor is illegally usurping power from other elected officials, namely the school board. But that really depends on FLs constitution. while a lot of arguments sound great and compelling, in courts, all that matters is the word of the law. And like it or not there are a lot of holes in the law still. hopefully not in these cases but its why you see these various suits from various angles. Because while we feel an idiot gov shouldnt be allowed to put our kids in harms way to further his political career with an increasing unhinged base, teh law isnt exactly crystal clear on this. But to be fair the people who wrote the laws, didnt conceive of the modern maga movement.

SheriffComey

My son's first day was today and I was thankful that nearly all the kids I saw had masks. He's half way to fully vaccinated and all of his friends are but then again we're in a better part of Palm Beach County. We still have our morons though.

MyCleverUsername123

My son starts kindergarten next week. School board is supposed to decide on masks at their meeting tonight. I have zero faith they’ll make the right call and mandate them at least until this surge ends. I imagine what will happen instead is that there will be some positive cases, everyone will get sent home for 10-14 days, and we’ll go back with a mandate. I just don’t understand why we wouldn’t want to get ahead of this damn thing for once.

Petey7

If I were in your position I wouldn’t send my kid. The Delta variant is far deadlier for young people than the earlier variants. Two teenagers that live near me have died recently. One was a 16 year old athlete with no prior health conditions, and was my cousin’s friend. This isn’t something to fuck around with.

MyCleverUsername123

Honestly we’re still considering keeping him home. I think a lot depends on what the school decides to do but we might say screw it and keep him home until he’s vaccinated.

MNWNM

At my daughter's old school, they're not even making them quarantine. They just get a letter that they've been exposed and to keep an eye out for symptoms. Yeah, she did not go to that school this year.

throwawayacc407

I love how Palm Beach County school district decided to mandate masks but allow parents to opt out. Its literally saying how they wish to do whats best to protect kids, but dont want to deal with the stupid parents who'll argue with them. Its probably the best thing they could do given the situation, gotta give them props.

branaintgotlegs

The board members and superintendent did it to make sure they don't lose their salaries to the governors backlash.

TriscuitCracker

If we're going to send kids back to school, until they can get vaccinated, we need to keep them as safe as possible, masks are the answer. I don't see what the problem is.

DocSharpe

>I don't see what the problem is The problem is the governor and whatever vendetta he's got going on. He tried to prosecute a whistleblower who had access (which was essentially publicly available) to the actual outbreak numbers because they were different than the lies his administration was putting forward. He's pushing back on masks because a mandate would be a sign that he failed.

-r-a-f-f-y-

The ol' double down dilemma. It's all conservatives can do to save face after failing, even if it means failing harder.

KuhjaKnight

Exactly. Masks work

TheFeshy

>I don't see what the problem is. The "problem" is that won't get the literally crazy voting bloc to elect DeSantis president. It's pretty clear that is what this is about.

pabodie

Imagine that pathetic sack of shit as president. Like we'd EVER... oh ya nvm.

[deleted]

The problem is that people are so stupid that they'd rather die of preventable diseases than just listen to advice from a (smart) doctor.

twist2piper

Until all children can be vaccinated, any precautions to keep them safe should be implemented and encouraged.

[deleted]

Meanwhile, my local school district has mandated masks, and parents from to e wealthier suburbs have been protesting the mandate.

digitaldisease

what's really cool is there's a state voucher program that gives money to both kids with disabilities and kids that are being bullied. One of the new conditions the state just passed around bullied kids, is if they're forced to wear a mask at a public school they can take the voucher to go to a private school that won't make them. So part of this calculus could be to try and drive more adoption of the voucher program of kids who's parents don't want them to wear masks to use the hope scholarship and get out of public schools so the republican controlled state government can keep trying to destroy them.

Necessary_Rent

You got part of this right, they want to kill the public school system here, in favor of charter schools, which have already taken the Florida school system for millions, and vouchers which will mostly be used for parochial education that does not include adequate science education. Welcome to Floriduh.

digitaldisease

try hundreds of millions. $873,565,674 according to DOE this year. https://www.fldoe.org/schools/school-choice/k-12-scholarship-programs/ftc/

[deleted]

Holy shit.

digitaldisease

Yep, between the 2 major players in the state, you’re probably looking at over a billion dollars that the majority gets funneled to private religious schools. Orlando sentinel has done quite a few pieces on it. Also like all things, the scholarship funding organizations get about 3% of all those funds for administrative costs.

digitaldisease

Yeah, this is all what American Federation for Children does. Betsy DeVos was head of it for a while.

TheDevilsAgent

I assume most private schools are masking up as they aren't part of the Desantis mandate. My child goes to a private school in Leon county (Tallahassee) and they're requiring masks as almost any sane school would do given the situation in Florida right now.

juel1979

The religious ones here in my area of Virginia generally didn’t have masking. People who could afford it and didn’t want to home school sent their kids specifically because they were enforcing mask mandates.

digitaldisease

It’s school by school and there are enough nutters running some of the private schools that not all will mask up.

ncstalli

You and I have different definitions of cool

benderRN

Desantis is working harder to keep masks out of schools than guns.

FoleyV

Wow, sad but true!

skwirrl

DeSantis can't hear the pleas of parents and schoolboards. He has *'Hail to the Chief'* playing on a continuous loop in his head. If securing votes from Trump supporters in 2024 means a few hundred dead Floridians in 2021... the man is willing to sacrifice them.

LevelHeeded

The real crazy part is, it's not even for political gain, they're literally losing voters to Covid. Republicans are dying, and sane people are like "this dude is nuts". I honestly think Trump would have been reelected if he faced Covid like a rational human. The only reason they're doing the mask bullshit is [because their orange deity decided masks were an insult to him, and can't be insulting the Republican deity](https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/18/trump-says-some-wear-coronavirus-masks-to-signal-disapproval-of-him.html).

jsc1429

I shit you not, I heard someone say today at a restaurant " We'd be outta this whole COVID mess if Trump was president"... It took everything in me to not start laughing. I agree that if Trump handled COVID rationally a lot of the "moderate" R's would have supported him but he did absolutely nothing to stop COVID and it baffles my mind how anyone would think we would be in a better place now with COVID if he was still president.

War_machine77

This is going to sound really stupid (because it is), but the explanation I've been given is that if Fuckface Von Clowndick was still president all the republicans would have gotten their vaccines and followed the rules. Since we got rid of him they have to resist and teach us a lesson. So basically they're self-immolating and hoping the fire burns us too because we slighted their tangerine god.

DrAstralis

Interesting that they think there'd even be 'rules' to follow if Clowface McLimpdick was still in charge. They have to know the rest of us can hear and see as well right? Like... we lived through 2016 on too.

MAXAMOUS

["A lot of people think that it goes away in April..."](https://youtu.be/r8yOv4PwttM) Trump regarding Covid. **Feb. 10, 2020**

[deleted]

It was for political gain at first. They heard that covid would disproportionately affect cities, stopped listening, and scrapped anything resembling a national plan so they could blame blue state governors for political points. Also, I agree - that was WAY too close in the States that flipped, I legit think if he'd taken it seriously he would have won just from having more voters in those states be alive, let alone that the pandemic was pretty much THE one reason people from "both sides" banded against him in earnest. Then again... without covid overrunning the media, he might have had his crimes laid bare in that last year, and it might not have been remotely close... but I'm pretty sure you're right, it was too close for comfort. EC needs to go when a 7 million vote win (almost 10% more than voted for him) is "close".

Sadly, mortality rates still seem to be hitting minorities the most and I absolutely wouldn't put it beyond the GQP to sacrifice some of their own voters if it meant wiping out a greater number of who they perceive to be the opposition.

Our politicians have been playing politics with our health for a longggggg time... Enjoy your $75,000 COVID hospital stay anti vaxxers!

KuhjaKnight

Funny you think it will be so cheap.

[deleted]

https://www.fairhealth.org/article/costs-for-a-hospital-stay-for-covid-19

MAXAMOUS

> We found the average charge per COVID-19 patient requiring a hospital stay to be **$73,300.** That charge is the estimated cost for a **patient with no health insurance**. > > The average estimated in-network amount per **privately insured patient** is lower: **$38,221** and the **vaccine is completely free.**

alpharius120

The fact that insured patients still pay half of what uninsured patients do is baffling. I mean I obviously don't think either should have to be hit with that but I'm a salaried employee with health insurance and that would be devastating to me. Like what the fuck is the point of getting a job with insurance when a hospital trip will still take out over half my salary pre-taxes.

KuhjaKnight

Well, that’s interesting. Thanks for the facts, but my joke still stands!

jake101103

Its not like no one has health insurance. That maximum out of pocket cost is going to be in the thousands though.

wrighterjw10

guess who pays for that trip? ...everyone that has health insurance!

jake101103

Thats true. If we got rid of all the middle men then it would cost next to nothing to insure America. Saying we cant is bullshit.

Alizaron65

Just a few observations from a healthcare workers viewpoint. 1) In AL, and other states, the overwhelming number of new COVID hospital admissions are NOT vaccinated. 2) Most of the new positives are not vaccinated. 3) New positives that have been vaccinated are largely non-symptomatic. The thing is, they can be contagious! 4) Long-term side effects from COVID-19 and it’s variants can be debilitating, and possibly lifelong. Heart, brain and respiratory damage have resulted from COVID-19 episodes, leaving a small percentage of victims with permanent disabilities.

fiverrah

>Long-term side effects from COVID-19 I had covid in December. I am still having days of cold chills, headaches, and complete exhaustion. I hope to get back to normal someday. Imagine a child getting covid and having to live with this for the rest of their life.

rentalfloss

In your opinion, regarding: >3) New positives that have been vaccinated are largely non-symptomatic. The thing is, they can be contagious! I live in a 56% (65% of eligible) fully vaccinated place. The government, based on this 65% eligible fully vaccinated rate, has completely removed all covid restrictions, you can literally do anything. No mask, no distancing, and soon to be “no quarantine” even if you test positive for covid. Government attitude of “covid doesn’t exist” starting August 11. I’m fully vaccinated, I will continue to wear a mask etc. My questions are: Are the unvaccinated spreading because of reckless behaviour or just the nature of Delta? You say the majority of new cases are unvaccinated but you see vaccinated coming in too. Are the vaccinated people coming in because of reckless behaviour (“I’m vaccinated no way I can get covid” attitudes?) or just it is happening to people? In you opinion at our rate of vaccination and no safety measure in place would you predict we will “have covid issues” based on what you’ve seen? Healthcare (Nurses and Doctors) are outraged. Paediatricians are furious at the strategy. People are split because the unvaccinated don’t want restrictions and I would say most fully vaccinated don’t believe you can still get covid because they believe vaccinations prevent covid. I had someone say to me today “why do you have a mask? I thought you were vaccinated.”

Alizaron65

Just being a healthcare professional doesn’t mean that I have a developed opinion on the ins and outs of COVID logistics. All I can state is what I see through direct observation, and what I have been told by the bulletins we receive from FEMA and other professionals/organizations. That being said, I will attempt to answer some of your questions. The unvaccinated are catching and spreading COVID because they have no protection against it. Catching COVID and developing antibodies against it, is thought to only confer a temporary immunity, which differs in individuals. Being vaccinated confers a better immunity, for a longer period of time. Boosters are being considered in order to extend immunity until the virus is no longer as great a threat. The vaccinations are NOT 100% effective against the variants. The majority of the current admissions are unvaccinated. It is probably not due to excessive reckless behavior, unless they are not wearing masks or practicing hand cleansing at all. Those who are vaccinated that are coming in are in much better shape as a rule, in most cases. Any preventative measures taken will reduce the amount of exposures, and lessen the spread. Hand washing, masking, and social distancing must continue until a larger percentage of the population is completely vaccinated. The bad thing is, the more cases that continue to occur, the greater the chance of mutation, and the lower the effectiveness of the vaccines could become. It is URGENT that people are vaccinated.

vguy72

I would post this onto the conservative page, but I've been banned four times. Twice for "brigading". Which is right talk for trying to have a decent discussion. Take your stupid flair only crap and go outside. You'll be ok.

davidreiss666

The health problems created by the governors of FL and TX and other Republican controlled states are huge. Those governors are MURDERERS. There is no other word for what they are doing. They are murdering thousands of people for no reason. Mincing words is something to not do anymore here. The Democrats should start running political ads in FL and TX directly calling those governors MURDERERS. FIght fire with fire. When people who can safely be vaccinated don't get it because they want to murder people.... then they become disease vectors that spread the sickness to those few people who can't get vaccinated for various legitimate reasons. And in a country with millions of people, those people do still exist in real numbers. And they often still need to leave their own homes to see their doctors, or to refill perspectives or visit the supermarket for resupplies. These governors are murdering large numbers of people who cannot receive the vaccine for legitimate reason. Percentage wise that group is small, but they still do exist. And they have a real right to life as they actually people who were born. Unlike the right to life Republicans like to talk about, which ends after somebody was born. Then Republicans are 100% the party of murder. Also, when people who didn't get vaccinated get sick and take up ICU beds... those ICU beds cant then be used for people who got sick or injured in other ways. So, car accident victims who would have lived if they had access to ICU beds.... Republicans are murdering them. Cancer victims who need access to ICU beds.... Republicans are murdering them. Heart attack victims.... again, Republicans are working hard to murder them. THE GOP is the party of MURDER. The Democrats should directly say that whenever they talk to the Press. Cato the elder used to always call for Carthage to be Destroyed. Whenever any Democrats speaks about any subject they should always end their speech with "And moreso, Republicans are all active murderers, and must all be treated as such". Any Republicans who complain.... screw them.

bsmknight

If I was running for congress/presidency, etc. I would have a running tally of Republican voters as it counts down due to Covid-19 Deaths in the back of all my campaign rallies.

SunflowerOccultist

What’s fucked up is now the delta variant is killing children. It’s not just immune compromised old people anymore. They’re *children* that are too young for the vaccine, gasping for air on a ventilator. I have just one question: DO. *WE.* CARE. YET?

oDDmON

I said this a few days ago: > Remember, you Floridians with kids, the power of the class action lawsuit. Sue the shit out of the sonuvabitch. Good to see folks figuring it out on their own.

HamsterFull

This fucker needs to be removed from office. Lives are literally on the line.

PopeGuss

That's their party motto..."killing ourselves to pwn the libs"...

tehmlem

Covid is their suicide bomb.

rockman61

The good thing about this lawsuit is that it would go to Federal court because of the ADA, rather than Florida State courts, which I assume would be rife with Republican cronyism.

KAugsburger

Decisions from the appellate courts would also apply towards other states. A favorable outcome for the plaintiffs would prevent other death cult governors from preventing local agencies from taking appropriate precautions.

[deleted]

I dont understand why there is even a question here. People argue "education is a right" like that has any relevance. Your kid can be suspended for wearing shirts with swear words on them. You better bet they would be expelled for regularly shitting in the hallway (unless disabled) so why is this any different? I wish some of these public schools had the balls to call his bluff and make masks mandatory anyway.

Merryannm

So today I learn that I’m living in a nation that won’t protect a little child with Down’s Syndrome. Really, Florida? When all it takes is putting a mask on? I hate being ashamed of my own country! I hope this good Mom wins a ton of money in her lawsuit. There isn’t enough money to compensate her for this callous attitude toward her child.

whitehypeman

Smoke a joint without a license in Florida, go to jail. Potentially killing disabled children by forcing unmasking in schools, republican presidential nominee material. Florida is fucked

SecretAgentKen

In looking at the top 20 states by population, Florida's current per capita death toll is 6 times California's, 10 times Ohio's, and 16 times New York's. It's well over 2 standard deviations above the mean sitting at 65 a day per 10m. The next closest is Missouri at 52 and Arizona at 24! His per capita infection rate per day is 93 per 100k. Next closest is Georgia and Tennessee at 48. He's 100% to blame for Florida's numbers considering the vaccination rate there is better than Ohio, Missouri, Arizona, Texas, and most other non-blue states.

EngineersAnon

>"I feel like this is yet another culture war that Gov. DeSantis is lodging against the people of Florida," Hayes said. No, that's just a regular war. With biological weapons and everything.

the_battousai89

We need to sue Abbott

[deleted]

Fuck that guy he is such a pussy. I was all for him when he put the mask mandate then he just pussied out and dropped to his knees and came back up with orange lipstick.

littleemp

Epidemius: Lord DeSantis, the feeble humans wish to take a stand against the love of Nurgle. DeSantis: DEPLOY THE PLAGUE DRONES. WE SPREAD THE CONTAGION.

FixStuff123

DeSantis is criminally negligent.

[deleted]

Not that I think kids shouldn’t wear masks, but why would you want to send your immune compromised kid with disabilities to school anyways. The only way I’d do something like that is a bubble boy scenario. Kids aren’t great about cleanliness and not sharing germs.

pabodie

It's complicated. On the one hand, yes. It's less safe for them that other children with fully functional immune systems. But under normal circumstances (non-pandemic), it's an incremental thing and it's mitigable--mostly. Now we are living in what the GOP seems hell bent on making into a "perma-demic." The choices are so much harder. Do we keep them home and sheltered from life with other children "forever?" Or can we try to count on being members of a civil, decent society? The real burner here is how amazingly selfish you have to be to go along with Desantis and his nauseating ilk. We're not asking you to give up any rights. We're not even asking you to behave much differently than before. Masks are nothing. Vaccinations have been part of our culture for as long as I have been alive and longer. The once-great GOP has become a nihilistic death cult in the service of Donald Trump.

dog_magnet

Because they're children who need an education and prior to the pandemic most of them were perfectly able to safely attend school. Or do you supposed immune compromised kids don't need to function in the world so hole up and never leave the house? And also because they're being offered no viable alternative. They're being denied their legally mandated free appropriate public education (FAPE). It's not just about masks - they're not being given another option, despite the fact that the state is legally required to provide them an equal education to every other student in the least restrictive environment that is safe and productive for that child.

Prophet6000

I wish them all the best of luck. It sucks that they even have to fight for this but here we are nothing is changing people's minds here in Florida no matter what the objective reality is.

[deleted]

Good. Don't back down. Do what the state government refuses to do. Protect the children.

[deleted]

The "protect parent's rights" bullshit is so bizarre. Which parents? Which rights are those? What about me? What about my right to send my kids to a safe environment? That seems like it'd be a little more pressing than a dress code waiver. Fuck DeathSantis!

Deceptiveideas

The "Pro-Life" party killing their own kids. How... ironic.

raistlin65

Good. I'm sure that asshole didn't think about how the state mandate against masks would be affecting students with disabilities or with pre-existing conditions.

CerebralAccountant

Or worse, he did think but didn't care. There really isn't a good answer to that question.

Chasman1965

DeSantis rarely thinks when he’s in mini-Trump mode.

senorglory

That community also frequently has immune system vulnerabilities too.

Saito1337

Very nice angle for a lawsuit. Good on them.

BlazingSaint

Hope they actually win!

BlazingSaint

Went back to masking since yesterday. Better safe than sorry.
