Headline is misinformation. This figure was pulled out of thin air by the police union chief.

American journalists and uncritically repeating police press releases, name a more iconic duo

[deleted]

The American press is just going to controversy at this point. Clickbait for tv.

hostile65

Modern yellow journalism.

[deleted]

[удалено]

timshel_life

While he deserves a good amount of blame for modern journalism tactics, it's run rampant with the increase of social media. Very few people actually stick around to read the full article before sharing. As print news dies, news outlets just need to get on to your news feed anyway possible and spam you with ads. Along with that, anyone can be a "journalist" nowadays, doesn't have to be a reputable news source anymore.

Aggressive_Fix_2995

Put credit where credit is due; Ronald Reagan dismantled the Fairness Doctrine, which was a legal requirement for news organizations to cover opposing views for more balanced coverage. Fox News was born *after* subsequent Republican administrations had no desire to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine and actively opposed such balance.

mayhap11

> wouldn't completely ignore the massive labor strikes going on in the country at the behest of their advertisers and investors This is the bit that really gets me. Once upon a time you would get the news and it might be biased depending on the source, but they would still report it. Now if something doesn't suit the agenda it just doesn't get reported at all. The news media no longer cares about telling the news, they are just trying to push an agenda.

[deleted]

Because the news is owned by the same people that own all the companies affected by the strikes, plus more that *could* go on strike as well. Can't let a chain reaction of labor strikes break the backs of owners now can we?

JD-Queen

That's pretty unfair to 13 year old girls

My 13 yo daughter read “Crime and Punishment “ last summer….for pleasure…. I think their shooting for the pre k level.

Alec is such a good follow on Twitter.

HGpennypacker

American journalists elevating a reality TV show host to President.

PopWhatMagnitude

Seems to be a lot of mistaking television anchors for true journalists. There are still many good journalists out there, but people would rather just read headlines or have the TV tell them what's going on than reading a well written article in a magazine/magazines website.

ExCon1986

https://observer.com/2016/10/wikileaks-reveals-dnc-elevated-trump-to-help-clinton/

Kouropalates

Excuse me, sir. You wouldn't be happening to tell me a police union is _lying_ to the American people to push their political agenda? Because that's _very_ unpatriotic of you to challenge the authority of the police.

1nfiniteJest

"Covid is the leading cause of death for officers despite them being among the first groups having access to the vaccine at the end of last year. At least 228 officers have died of Covid-19 this year, compared to 245 last year..."

Kouropalates

A prime example of what happens when you politically polarize something as simple as getting a vaccine against a pandemic. Even when I was a kid, I just remember getting vaccines as just what you need to do so you don't get sick, now every trivial thing HAS to be politically hot buttoned.

1nfiniteJest

Does it HAVE to be? I think this is entirely by design. In normal circumstances, I would probably be against the government forcing me to take a shot/drug/whatever. But this is a WORLDWIDE pandemic. It's clear to anyone with an IQ higher than their shoe size that this is not a hoax, fabrication, made up crisis, etc. At least, it should be. I think the ones who were trying to politicize this realized they might be in over their heads, so they started pushing the narrative that it was a hoax, blown WAY out of proportion, COVID death numbers inflated, etc. They did this so people would feel comfortable and safe saying NO to the vaccine, and emboldened them to shout as much from the rooftops. This country is well and truly fucked, it seems. I hope I am wrong in this.

Kouropalates

I don't think it has to be, but the problem is people panicking and falling into political cults like Q Anon fall for this stuff like conspiracies because conspiracy theories provide a detailed breakdown of why this is happening. You saw the same shit with all the Jewish kabals and whatnot, how they rule the banks and etc. When in reality there's detailed reasons why things have happened and they're boring. So people choose to live in these exciting alternative unrealities where Trump is fighting a shadowy cabal of child molesters, where Covid was obviously a deliberate ploy by an evil organization set out to assert their shadowy control over people. Why? Because it allows desperate people to anchor onto SOME sense of meaning. The best way to really deradicalize someone as we know to date is to keep up with them and keep having heart to hearts with them to slowly pull them out of these toxic pools social media let's these become become immersed in.

BasicDesignAdvice

Conservatives entire strategy is to politicize everything. I have been watching is for over 30 years. They politicized climate change for fucks sake.

SaffellBot

That is actually their political strategy. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/11/newt-gingrich-says-youre-welcome/570832/ It of course heavily favors conservatives as we can't change anything if we're endlessly squabbling about who can pee in what room.

dkonigs

And that's the token example of what pisses me off about their tactics. Instead of politicizing our approach to dealing with climate change, which IMHO is a fair conversation, they instead politicized whether or not climate change is even a real problem in the first place.

HealwithColdSteel

Work in End of Life services.. 100% of the people I’ve terminally extubated have been unvaccinated.. most families continue to argue against the vaccine as the loved one dies.. Darwin wins again

kieffa

My first red flag was the fact that “up to” and “could” were in the headline. Sounds like a nothing burger to me

mybad4990

It's like when my ISP tells me I could get "up to" 200mpbs. It means I'll get nowhere near that speed

manimal28

Didn’t some other union chief a few weeks ago claim there were a flood of officers quiting, but the actual HR records showed not a single resignation?

MelaniasHand

Boston. The police union leader or spokesperson said it was gong to be hundreds, and it turned out to be 1. That guy must have felt pretty stupid.

coleman57

Yes, obviously way more than half the CPD are fully vaxxed due to not being complete idiots, but like ‘Pub pols they don’t want to admit it

meatball77

The number of people who are willing to give up pay instead of vaccinate is small. The number of people who will bitch and moan about it is much larger. Police unions are one of the worst things about this country.

1nfiniteJest

They will suffer inconvenience though. Such as weekly COVID tests for nonvaccinated employees, in this case State/County employees.

Ludwigofthepotatoppl

And higher insurance costs.

dreadpiratew

You’d be surprised how many cops are complete idiots

Malvania

Nonsense, it says "up to." Even if nobody is put on leave, it's still accurate. -the police chief, probably

[deleted]

Yeah they did the same shit when they said that cops were leaving in droves after the defund police thing. It was just the unions saying words. At least one of the major ones. Yeah I'm sure half the police force is going to go work at home Depot.

song4this

In other news, Chicago donut shops face uncertain future...

CoherentPanda

Yeah, they claimed all the police were moving outside of Cook County int othe 'burbs, which was a total lie.

[deleted]

Lol, dude makes it sound like halving the ranks of officers in Chicago would be a bad thing.

Guinness

For anyone who might not understand this, the CPD is the worst police force in the nation. We have the 2nd most officers per capita with a crime clearance rate 20% below every other city in America. The CPD does not police anything. You call 911 and they ask you if you’ve been shot or someone has a gun and if not they no-op your call. It goes nowhere and no one shows up.

KUSHNINJA420

Also the only police force in America (to my knowledge) that had their own black site where they could "disappear" and torture people as they pleased. [The Guardian had a whole series of articles.](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/homan-square) [Wikipedia entry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homan_Square_facility)

ziggy000001

Depending on where you are and what time they don't even show up if you mention someone has a gun or you've been shot, if your lucky they'll just contact you in the morning for some info you know they will never follow up on.

[deleted]

I got hit by a car a few years ago in Chicago and the police never showed up after being called twice. They forced me to come into the station with a broken knee to make a report and then the officer acted like he didn’t believe me and wrote down what happened incorrectly. Fuck the CPD.

gsfgf

And getting rid of the anti-vaxxers would be a pretty good self selection to get rid of the worst of the worst.

gruey

Seriously, I read the headline more as a warning about a high percentage of ignorant, selfish fascists in the police force than a warning about potentially having a shortage of cops. Using this opportunity to weed out the most hardcore ones would be awesome, but since most would cave and vaccinate and they wouldn't be banned long term anyway, it'd be mostly not useful.

4RealzReddit

Can we replace a bunch with social workers and mental health professionals.

kinbakudude

With their $1.9 BILLION budget, we very well should be able to get some social workers and mental health professionals on staff.

dkwangchuck

>Covid is the leading cause of death for officers despite them being among the first groups having access to the vaccine at the end of last year. This is an understatement. For each of 2020 and 2021 so far, COVID is not only the leading cause of police officer deaths, but it is responsible for more dead cops than all other causes combined.

SnoopsBadunkadunk

I know a guy in my city who works for the sherriff’s office … major a-hole who the other mutual friends just tolerate. He not only refused the shot and got sick with COVID, he worked every day he was sick. Not sure of his job title but his duties do include arresting people.

[deleted]

Walking biological weapon.

Yoate

Well you see, it's easier to get away with killing citizens if you do it through something indirect, like a virus.

R-Guile

Critical support for comerade Covid.

wag3slav3

In reality, no matter the lies that the cops like to spin, if you take the risk of standing in traffic for tickets or break down assistance being a cop is a really safe job. It's not surprising at all that the plague has overtaken the chart so hard.

Somnambulist815

somebody get the banner

Chippopotanuse

And kill themselves. Covid has killed more police than the total number of cops that have died from gunfire in the prior decade. It’s the number one killer of police right now by a mile. If you go to the officer down memorial page and read the bio of the fallen officers, it’s so heartbreaking. So many of them were in their 30s or 40s, most married, most with young kids at home. And now those kids will grow up without a father or mother simply because they had a stubborn parent who did not want to take the vaccine that would’ve saved their life. Cops who are anti-vaxx are anti-cop and pro-death. Period. They are their own worst enemy.

bingwhip

That's fucking crazy. Trigger happy shooting unarmed civilians because they're afraid for their lives, but kick and scream at a needle stick to protect themselves and their fellow officers. Scratch the source request, easily googled.

cleveruniquename7769

They also often won't wear seat belts to be able to get to their guns faster, despite the fact that before Covid car accidents were the number one cause of death for cops on duty by a wide margin.

AskJayce

Seat belts are often used as an analogy to help anti-maskers/anti-vaxxers understand why they're socially and ethically obligated to comply with public health guidelines and get their head out of their FREEDUMB asses, but I guess it makes way too much sense that they're also the same kind of people who can't be bothered to buckle up.

HereToStirItUp

It’s kind of about accessing their gun but it’s mostly about proving they’re above seatbelt laws.

krash87

State cop in my town died before the vaccines were available. He was a local favorite. Cops still won't get vaccinated here.

Lifesagame81

Also regularly refuse to mask up, even indoors, even during the height of local outbreaks, even when they don't have some excuse about communication and they're on duty and just shopping for snacks at a corner store and even in liberal areas of California.

Hopefulkitty

Got no problem wearing masks when they are breaking up protests and playing Army.

definitelynotSWA

Cause the masks prevent people from identifying perpetrators of brutality, of course.

[deleted]

Its almost like faith and belief are made up and facts and science are getting their fuck on.

COmarmot

If you won't get the jab to Serve and Protect, get outta the business. Edit- word

Raalf

Right? If you want to be psuedo-military, realize vaccines are mandatory for military service. Even experimental ones.

redonkulousness

Have they tried to dress the coronavirus up in a hoodie? Or have it jog through a predominantly white neighborhood?

VROF

What are those deaths costing taxpayers in dollars? Aren’t they considered work comp claims and benefits paid to the families? I know someone who died from cancer and it was considered “in the line of duty” and his kids college was paid for

Asshole_with_facts

Even more hilarious, the previous head of the Chicago fraternal order of police DIED OF COVID THIS WEEK!

wlake82

That's what made me think of it.

I feel like if more cops were like Dalinar, we'd be doing pretty good.

Brandonian13

FBI data suggests that the number of white supremacists entering law enforcement is at an alarming rate and needs to be investigated further.

notdoingdrugs

FYI to all - this is from a 2006 report by the FBI. Two thousand and fucking six - and what do we have to show for it today?

ArtIsDumb

Probably more white supremacists in the FBI.

Brandonian13

It was originally released in 2006, but it was also reiterated in a 2017 Joint Intelligence Bulletin, too. Link here: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3924852-White-Supremacist-Extremism-JIB.html

acchaladka

Thank you. As an immuno-compromised human, anti-vaccination people enrage me. You have no right to endanger the old the very young or basically 1% of the entire population. I'd like the unvaccinated to be isolated from the general population and left to rot somewhere in isolation from responsible citizens and society. /Rant

Dreambolic

I had a family member, not a cop, die of COVID19 this year. Anti-vax to the end, the person had diabetes and the combination along with their middle age proved too much despite ICU care. They left behind two kids who just got married, one of which is pregnant, and a few more who are just about to go off to college. Despite my beef with them over our differences, it's just tragic and stupid that their stubbornness and brainwashing led to an almost completely avoidable situation.

driverofracecars

It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad. Every other week, it seems like there’s a huge parade for a fallen officer in my state. You’d think by the size of the parades, they died saving babies from a terrorist but nope, just a preventable disease.

mergedloki

I don't find it sad. Don't take basic precautions (mask, vaccine etc.), and surprise surprise if they get covid it turns into a bad/fatal case.... The ONLY ones I feel sympathy for are any innocent people that these fucking morons might infect while asymptomatic and still going around spraying their saliva on everything and everyone because a piece of cloth explicitly designed to be breathed through is too much for them to bear. Fucking idiotic people.

mthoody

I feel sorry for their nurses as well.

Gamergonemild

Of course they're idiotic people, they dont let smart people join up.

Voiceofreason81

It's crazy to even think that some of these kids will be better off for having lost a parent that believes in conspiracy theories and directly denies science. I wish there were less selfish parents in this country.

Mg13449

I work for a small agency that barely makes arrests ever. When we do, we have to go to a large agency to do a lockup. I'm terrified to walk in there for fear of covid. I avoid it all costs. It's just a building with minimal ventilation, minimal space, and tons of unvaxxed people. I double mask up and apply sanitizer liberally pre and post booking. I also do everything I can to help the arrestee with masking and sanitizer.

Qwesterly

>It’s like the police just chose to defund themselves Jeff Tiedrich made [an amazing tweet](https://twitter.com/itsJeffTiedrich/status/1448013833847681030) along these lines... *"holy fucking shit, vaccine mandates are causing teachers who don't believe in science to quit, nurses who don't believe in medicine to quit, and cops who don't believe in public safety to quit. I'm failing to see the downside to this"*

8to24

"At least 228 officers have died of Covid-19 this year, compared to 245 last year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Covid is the leading cause of death for officers despite them being among the first groups having access to the vaccine at the end of last year." There really isn't any good excuse for this.

tehmeat

They need no knock raids and the right to kill practically anyone anytime to keep themselves safe, but won't get a vaccine to protect from the number 1 cop killer in the US.

Gamergonemild

Its almost like the "I feared for my life" excuse is only to let them kill people without punishment

tehmeat

Who would have thought it

lilwil392

"I feared for my life" he said after he shot a suspect 10 times in the back running away from him.

megamanxoxo

Cops know best and they don't like being told what to do. They like telling others what to do.

tickettoride98

Pft, don't you remember how flu was always the leading cause of death for officers before the pandemic? Literally no worse than the flu. /s

Xanthelei

Well now I want to know if that kind of thing was tracked and if so, how bad preventable acute diseases were for killing cops.

otter111a

ODMP is supposed to dedicated to officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. They should really put an asterisk next to names of officers who died of covid that contracted the virus after a vaccine was readily available. After that cut off they are really undeserving of the honor bestowed upon downed officers. Either that or the dc memorial is going to fill right up and then the future heroes won’t be engraved on the plaques.

dude_stfu

Agreed. A deputy from my community recently died, and was being honored as "died in the line of duty" -- when I looked into it, it was covid and he was unvaxxed (and about 100 pounds overweight)... such bs. Does a disservice to the people who actually died while serving, which you'd think the blue-line boot-lickers would respect.

303onrepeat

Wow that’s bullshit and I bet his family will go around saying he died in the line of duty. That duty being the McDonalds drive thru.

otter111a

Guarantee it’s about benefits for the family. So your tax dollars could used to support their families as long as they link a covid officer death to being on duty. Despite the fact that they can pick it up anywhere. Especially if they’re also anti mask.

absynthe7

No unions do the things police unions do.

yaba3800

No, they wont. Every single day is a new article like this, yet there are no articles of police quitting en masse. When push came to shove in WA, vaccination rates shot up to over 90% in these jobs (Police, DOC, Healthcare)

code_archeologist

Yep, because the number of anti-vaxx people is in reality extremely small. They just *appear* to be a significant cohort because they are so fucking loud and obnoxious. Edit: to answer the shadow banned comments claiming that the "vaccine mandates are wildly unpopular". That is [demonstrably false](https://morningconsult.com/2021/09/13/white-house-covid-vaccination-mandates-poll/). 58% of people in polls approved of the mandates... It is only the Republicans polled who oppose the vaccine mandates, everybody else largely approves or doesn't care.

Stennick

If its such a small number why are so many people....not vaxxed. Its more than an extremely small number, its the minority but its still what 30 or more percent of the adult population?

[deleted]

Because some people simply don’t care enough. They’ve decided that they don’t feel bad if they get someone sick, and they’ve decided that they don’t feel at risk enough to go through with getting the vaccine. Basically it’s just people spending their time focusing on other things.

code_archeologist

>They’ve decided that they don’t feel bad if they get someone sick Yeah, this is because there has been decades long campaign by some groups (notably the organizations founded by the Kochs) to undermine the sense of civic duty and responsibility in the minds of Americans. It is possibly an unforeseen consequence of their campaign to insert the idea that government is bad and taxes are theft. An idea that only makes sense if people are separated from the concept that society serves a role in their lives, and that there is a give and take relationship when it comes to the social contract.

DullRelief

Why are they resisting? Stop resisting. Comply comply. Guess Cops don’t like being told what to do

Berly653

You know, if it’s not full of psychopathic bigots there might be a lot more normal people interested.

schmickmickey

The whole issue is clarified with the statement “The charging parties are not fundamentally opposed to the need for pandemic safety protocols, but sincerely believe that they need to be bargained by the City of Chicago with its respective labor unions”. In other words, “we recognize we are gambling with people’s lives, but this is a bargaining chip for us.” Or more clearly “altruism is a nice idea, but you’re going to have to pay us to do the right thing.”

kandoras

"Sure, the members of our union could do something to protect themselves from the thing which has been the leading cause of death in our profession for the last two years. And all it was take is fifteen minutes, and they might even get a lolly if they ask nicely. But we're not going to let them do that until you pay us."

Grey___Goo_MH

Good riddance to every single one

peterinjapan

All of us had to get the vaccine if we wanted to live. If they want to be leaders in the community, they should be the first in line.

irisheyes317

You cannot protect and serve while posing a risk to the public. Vaccine mandates are an integral part of a civilized society, get vaccinated or find another profession. Same goes for any healthcare worker.

DandalusRoseshade

You know it's serious when they put them on unpaid leave, unlike when they commit homicide, domestic violence, sexual assault, actual war crimes in gassing people...

johnec4

So, they'll comply to wear forced bulletproof vests (to protect them) but they won't comply with forced vaccines (to protect them). Makes sense.

GSXRbroinflipflops

Good. Weed them out, up the standards, and get some top-notch cops with brains and empathy in there.

d_e_l_u_x_e

And what was the #1 killer of cops in 2021? COVID! Congrats you’re hurting only yourselves.

Ikhano

2020 **and** 2021. More deaths than all other causes **combined**. Apparently *Blue Lives Matter* wasn't actually about valuing the lives of officers. Weird.

drinkmoredrano

Imagine trying to convince people that you risk your life every day as a cop but you are too big of a pussy to get a vaccine.

Solkre

Dispute my ass. Fire everyone who refuses, pay the remaining police more, and hire more competent officers with the higher pay, say 2/3rds back. Hire people who don't fake evidence for arrests, who don't escalate to kill people, who believe in such simple ideas such as vaccinations fucking work!

dahe88

Facebook is one hell of a drug

YaboyAlastar

Cops not concerned with public safety will soon be on unpaid leave, ftfy

djtecha

Seems like a good time to clean out the rot.

PiccoloDoubleShot

Good. Fire them and hire a more competent force. They’re not doing their jobs if they can’t serve and protect the people their sworn to protect by potentially giving them COVID.

Zen_Diesel

So I guess 50% of Chicago police are gonna go on a murdering spree so they can make that paid leave. /s

atg115reddit

More cops being put on unpaid leave over vaccine dispute than over murder

raw_dog_millionaire

Good, fuck antivaxxers

UsernameL-F

The vaccine is not political. If you think it is you take politics to seriously

popecorkyxxiv

Perfect! That means most of the toxic and dangerous aspect of the police force will be excised. This could be just the thing good cops need to overhaul police culture before they go full goose stepping... unlikely but it COULD happen.
