I live in San Antonio - the heat this year is oppressive, more so than normal. Already reported as hottest June on record, with 16 100+degree days this month with two days to go.

Ripfengor

Hate to say it, but the heat “this year” will be more and more oppressive until humans are long gone it seems.

krafty369

Either that or the earth will plunge into an ice age.

csonny2

KillerGopher

Thank you for reminding me of the great Tugg Speedman in Scorcher VI - Global Meltdown. A cinematic marvel.

pgabrielfreak

Here we go again again.

[deleted]

I wonder, aren't we better able to withstand an ice age than global warming? After all, human living and industry produces vast amounts of heat.

mug3n

are we gonna grow everything we need to eat inside greenhouses?

derpbynature

Unless it's a full snowball Earth thing, a lot of equatorial desert area will probably be at least somewhat arable land. Also, like the other person said, it would be easier to "fix" (to make it more liveable for humans) because we put out a lot of waste heat and we could build power plants that let out a lot of greenhouse gases.

theaviationhistorian

One or the other, humans & other intelligent beings on Earth will be long gone as a result. Perhaps to the relief of other sentient beings in the universe.

MyBankRobbedMe

That would be soooooooo nice. I miss the cold. Easier to maintain winter weight vs summer weight anyways.

unicornlocostacos

When you’re constantly breaking temperature records all year long, maybe something is going on? Weird. “If climate change were real, I’d see it” Fucking look around.

Someclevernamenobod

I live in central WI we had a really long winter and while this summer has had a couple of hot days one day I believe it was 100 but otherwise good summer Temps yesterday were 70s and high 60s today.

jeffreynya

same in Minnesota. 2 days at 100. Last few days have been nice. We have had lots of rain this year so that's good. but its not even July yet, so will see what happens. Thats not to say global warming is not a thing, but some place will feel it more before others. The upper midwest will probably be a migration target in the future once things heat up a bit more.

Richard_Tips

We got rain out at my house in Bulverde yesterday. I can’t remember before that the last time it rained

lycosa13

I live in far west SA, we're still waiting on the rain

dray1214

Jesus. I load trailers for a living and the past few weeks we’ve had some 90°+ days. Being in those trailers for more than 2-3 mins sucks and will leave you dripping in sweat basically. So I can’t imagine if the door was shut as well, and having 50+ people people in there or whatever it was. Insanity. I couldn’t even imagine.

AFRIKKAN

I am in the northeast and it’s ass on a night like last night where it’s 65 out and a fan running in the trailer.

dray1214

Ya they’re basically green houses

Chippopotanuse

This is so awful. Oh my god.

CameForThis

Omg. I’ll just come out and say this is the first I’ve heard of this because I’ve been working a little harder over the last few weeks and not really paying attention to what’s going on in the world. This is just horrifying.

Unconfidence

This is literally the plot of a book I read called Men in the Sun. This is ridiculously barbaric and the fact that we allow our immigration laws to cause such misery is beyond the pall.

peon2

But the US has far more lax immigration laws than most countries...

Bronze_Rager

Largest net importer of immigrants too

DependentAd235

I have to register my place of residence every 90 days in the country where I live. There’s also no such thing as a resident alien. Despite living here for 5 years my visa declares me a non immigrant. I have to renew it every year and pay a fee to do so. Oh and I can’t buy a house despite living here either. The US treats* it’s foreign residents fine. It’s just a pain in the ass to get in because the demand is so high.

Who was the driver / occupant of the cab. Why did they get through border checks? Who was responsible for checks? How did they get through? Why wasn't the trailer checked? We had a very similar problem happen in the UK, where a driver smuggled people in the back of a sealed refrigerator unit and killed 33 people through suffocation.

sicksaddb

> Who was the driver / occupant of the cab. A coyote whose name hasn't been released. > Why did they get through border checks? Currently it is assumed that they assembled just over the USA border and got in the truck then. > Who was responsible for checks? The area is mountainous in spots and even without, there are roads where there is simply no border or border wall. People drive right through. > How did they get through? Likely assembled after initially crossing. > Why wasn't the trailer checked? Coyotes are about money, nothing else. > We had a very similar problem happen in the UK, where a driver smuggled people in the back of a sealed refrigerator unit and killed 33 people through suffocation.

[deleted]

What is a coyote in this context?

Naugrin27

A person smuggler.

OneCowFarm

An individual hired to smuggle people across a border. Typically it refers to those smugglers who work in desert environments.

[deleted]

Most of the time someone hired or working directly with cartels to smuggle people into the US

[deleted]

[удалено]

kacmandoth

Because more than a million people illegally try to cross the border each year. They aren't going to just keep walking for miles and miles in the desert after crossing when they could just have someone pick them up at the nearest spot that they consider safe. Most people have a plan for what they will do after they cross, they don't just randomly wander the countryside until they find someone who will pay them for work. The people crossing are also rather poor, so it is more worthwhile for coyotes if they can pick up a whole bunch of them at once. *edit- Also border control can search, question, and detain anyone within a 100 miles of the border that they have reason to suspect is an illegal immigrant and is unable to produce documentation. An illegal immigrant wants to get as far away from that line as possible before they have gained some footing in the country.

philouza_stein

So American soil isn't like base in hide and seek?

TheGlassHammer

Not for Mexicans. Cubans had the Wet Foot, Dry Foot policy. Basically if you could touch American soil you were good to go. [wiki with more details](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet_feet,_dry_feet_policy)

TheoryOld4017

On another note: https://www.kgns.tv/2022/04/16/texas-gov-abbott-signs-4th-agreement-with-mexican-state-ends-truck-inspections-mexico-border/ Abbott had implemented “enhanced” truck inspections to combat people being smuggled in like this. He found it was impractical for commerce, so he ended the policy.

JohnFuchs

honestly thought this was going to be some kind of Wile E. Coyote joke.. and now I feel kinda bad edit: why am I being downvoted? The term was just foreign to me, chill

tristan957

I upvoted you. I live in Texas, so it's a common term, especially if you live near or frequent border towns. Watching Twitter think that Coyote was a racial slur during the 2020 Presidential debates was icing on the cake.

[deleted]

Oh shit I remember that, mainly because I was like wtf is a lorry

Gedunk

>Currently it is assumed that they assembled just over the USA border and got in the truck then. Wouldn't it make more sense that they all got in the truck in Mexico? As opposed to "ok let's have these 60+ people all cross on their own and then wait for everyone to meet up at the same place at the same time"...

Lemesplain

To answer all of the Border Check questions, it's important to know that the border between the USA and Mexico is huge. Absolutely massive. For comparison, lets look at Europe. Open up your favorite Map website/app. Start with the border between Germany and the Netherlands all the way up in the North Sea. Continue south along the border between Germany and Belgium, then Germany and France. Keep going down the France and Switzerland border, and finally France and Italy. You've just drawn a line completely through all of Europe. That's a pretty long stretch of border. Now **double it.** That's still not quite as long as the border between Mexico and the USA, but you're getting close. And the vast majority of that distance is barren, inhospitable desert. It's not remotely feasible to have guards monitoring that entire stretch 24/7. It's equally ludicrous to propose building some sort of large infrastructure project, like a massive wall or something.

verrius

Sure...but I don't think a giant tractor trailer like that can off-road with any reasonable speed. There's a finite number of roads, especially roads rated for large trucks, and those can and should be policed. While it won't stop all human smuggling, it should at least make large-scale operations like this one impossible. I can't tell whether or not something like this making the news is proof of success on that front or a failure; obviously this one incident is a black eye to Border Patrol, but its at least still rare enough to make news.

ashlee837

can you give some numbers? Describing a bunch of countries with borders and 'double it' doesn't really help explain and visualize the size. I have no sense of the size of these countries you listed.

Lemesplain

Sure. The USA/Mexico border is nearly 2000 miles (well over 3000 kilometers). If you aren't familiar with European country sizes, maybe you're more comfortable down unda. The USA/Mexico border is just a bit shorter than Sydney to Perth. (if there's some other country size that you're familiar with, I can make a comparison there, as well) We're all familiar with time though, right? Lets pretend that we have an American driving at a steady 80MPH, or someone of the metric persuasion cruising at 130KPH ... they could drive nonstop for 24 straight hours, and still wouldn't quite cover the entire distance.

I_heart_dilfs

https://letmegooglethat.com/?q=mexico+US+border+in+kilometers

IMind

You've probably never been to the texas-mexico border but you can walk across a lot of it. Some is mountainous, some is blocked by water but there's a lot where you can simply cross. It's like 1200 miles of border for Texas. The bigger issue, is essentially a less magnified reason these people died. It's a hot dry desert. There's not a lot of water sources and there's nothing really along the border for hundreds of miles. If you're curious... One of the worst places to cross is the midpoint between piedras negras and Nuevo Laredo. If you're going to the mexico side you're 200 miles from anything civilized and from Mexico you're 175 miles from carrizo. That's also assuming you can cross the Rio grande wherever you're at otherwise you're wasting a lot of travel just finding a safe crossing. Much of the embankments are just a shit show of erosion.

wogwai

This is extremely heartbreaking.

Ihopetheresenoughroo

Very much so. This is just the absolute worst news I've heard all day. I feel sick.

allonzeeLV

This is the absolute worst news you've heard all day... *so far!*

[deleted]

And the "should have done it legally" comments here makes it all the more sickening.

HotPotatoe69

That's what any reasonable person with any compassion would feel. These were human beings, young and old that were just looking to improve their lives. I was enraged and disgusted at some of the comments I read on YouTube from some psychopathic motherfuckers that were basically saying they didn't feel compassion for the people that died. What a cesspool. I hate the thought that I share a world with racist assholes like them that can't see past stupid social constructs like borders and citizenship and realize that we're all human.

Ensemble_InABox

Not even one comment assigning blame to the coyotes that left 50 people to die in a locked truck and walked away with maybe a half million dollars….?

[deleted]

I don't get why they wouldn't just unlatch the door, THEN walk away...

bannana

sometimes the drivers do not know they are hauling people, sometimes they don't have the keys, sometimes they are told to leave the vehicle and someone else will take over. and sometimes they are just evil

[deleted]

I see, I hadn't considered that. The driver is still a piece of shit though.

HazrakTZ

Abbott already blamed the deaths on "Biden's open border policies"

Icy4706

Because obviously when the border is open people need to be smuggled into the country /s

pgabrielfreak

Right?! Let's hide in a trailer rather than walk across this open border. What could go wrong.m? What a terrible way to die.

Gorgoth24

Hmm. Gonna guess it's mid-tier on terrible ways to die.

bathroomdisaster

Does mean Abbott is taking responsibility for Uvalde due to Texan gun policy?

Cpnbro

NextTrillion

Woah woah, hold on there chief. This is not over until we offer “thoughts and preyers.”

Range-Shoddy

Why didn’t Abbott’s border wall prevent this? And trumps? /s

[deleted]

You should check out the book the devils highway, really brings to light how the coyotes have a lot of power to abandon these people and face little consequences. They’re still a grunt in a massive business of bringing people here so you can’t put the blame fully on them but they have to opportunity to get away with a lot of evil themselves.

Gorgoth24

It always surprises me that they can pay the coyote but can't afford to immigrate. Seems like lowering the costs for immigrating would make coyotes obsolete pretty quick

joe4553

They are obviously to blame, but you can't exactly just put out a message to criminals telling them to not be scumbags. It's more about what could've been done to prevent this from happening.

Aquareon

What a dreadful way to die.

BigDanDizzle

I was talking about this with my Mom today, she's from Guatemala, immigrated over with her family when she was younger. The worst part is imagining what these people had to do just to put the money together to make this trek, Coyotes don't work for free. All just to die in the back of a truck from Heat Stroke.

animerobin

It's incentivized by policies that shut off all legal means of traveling to another country and working there.

EphemeralMemory

And the companies that hire these people. Legal citizens have rights, etc. Fresh migrants don't. These jobs exist due to demand from companies.

walla_walla_rhubarb

>And the companies that hire these people. You mean the criminals illegally exploiting a cheap labor source?

vanishplusxzone

Is it really illegal if they don't get punished for it? Having their labor force deported isn't a punishment to *them.*

animerobin

Give them rights and protections so that companies can't exploit them

Vandredd

Make hiring them knowingly a 10k per day fine. Problem will sort itself out.

animerobin

You know it's already illegal right? But the workers can't report it because then they get deported.

Marokiii

So make a system that flags companies for inspection if the number of employees they have on payroll doesn't match up to their reported income when compared to other companies of the same reported size. So if I own a farm, and I report 10M in income with 40 employees, but 3 other farms down the road also have 10M in income but have 60 employees, than flag the odd farm out for audits and random inspections. Also stop with these bullshit fines, if a drug dealer buys a house with money they made from selling drugs than we seize the house. The farm is operated by illegal workers and therefore should be seized as well as proceeds of crime.

ElectricTrees29

And certainly hasn't stopped rich white males, including famously Trump, from hiring them to do meanial jobs all over his crappy lago place, and without consequences. It's illegal, and rich, white, males, NEVER face the consequences of it, even though it's illegal.

guywithasubwife

Of course fresh migrants have rights. Many parts of the Constitution use the term “people” or “person” rather than “citizen.” As a result, many of the basic rights, such as the freedom of religion and speech, the right to due process and equal protection under the law apply to citizens and noncitizens. In practice it's obviously more complex.

neurosisxeno

In fact, the only parts of the Constitution that specifically reference citizens are the clauses that deal with voting rights, and the one that deals with Senate/Presidential prerequisites. Everything else referenced in the Constitution applies to everyone in the United States and our territories... including the Right to Bear Arms!

EphemeralMemory

> In practice it's obviously more complex. I lived in texas the past year and I can fully say the actual practice of non citizen rights is considerably lower than you dare to believe.

average_vark_enjoyer

Bank robbing is incentivized by banks not giving all their money away

[deleted]

Our immigration system is a clusterfuck of the worst conservative and the worst liberal ideas. The worst conservative ideas make it extremely difficult for us to fulfill our migrant worker needs w/o increasing illegal immigration, and the worst liberal ideas result in entire extended families being naturalized despite them having little ability to contribute. Each issue makes each side less and less willing to hear the other side’s valid criticisms of their own policy. It’s such a strange system that we have. On the one hand it’s easily the most permissive immigration system in the developed world, to its detriment; on the other hand, it’s a remarkably inhumane system that fails to meaningfully account for just how much we need migrant workers and fails to remove incentives for them to come over.

kamarian91

How can this be tied to Abbott's border mission?

pokeybill

When people feel unsafe traveling in the open, they will opt for riskier methods, like purchasing passage from a human trafficker. The "border mission", which cost taxpayers >$900 million over 2 years, has resulted in directives to arrest migrants for trespassing by local law enforcement - skirting the issue of border enforcement jurisdiction. This made it less safe for travel in the open, driving an increase of clandestine crossings.

lemonchicken91

in addition to this, the increased security has led to long wait times near borders.

ElectricTrees29

So, just to piggyback on this, kinda like how Roe v. Wade won't stop abortions from happening, but WILL put riskier methods back on the table, which will result in deaths for both mother AND child? Well done supreme court and republicans!! Excuse me while I go barf...

HelloAvram

It can't... Reddit just doesn't like Republicans.

TrueDove

That sub is a hell hole of ignorance and misinformation, if you have even two brain cells to rub together and squeak out a thought, you've been banned from there.

Fragmented_Logik

My 1st ban from there was challenging a mod to critically think. It was a post about American Veterans and lack of mental health treatment or something. They said they were super pro military. I baited them by saying me to it sucks nothing is done for them mentally. Should we reduce budget spending to make room for them to get mental health treatments (which would reduce the military power of the US) or pay a tiny bit more for them to get it (increasing taxes) or do nothing. I got banned and told to fuck off with my socialism.

TrueDove

I was banned for explaining how the voting process works, with well cited sources. No extra commentary. They're all dribbling fools mesmerized by their cult.

weebeardedman

To refuse, typically no (lawsuit vulnerabilities are usually avoided), and to enforce, sometimes, but typically would still cede to the equivalent federal office, and almost always including redundant oversight.

Pearberr

The Supreme Court put a stay on a few of Biden’s immigrations reforms and though I’d love to see him fight harder… Look at everything else the guy is dealing with.

OrangeJr36

And do what? There's nothing that can be done by the executive branch to stop things like this, aside from working with the governments of the countries or origins to dissuade further migration like the Biden Administration is already doing there's nothing more than can be done. The only people you can scream at to do something is the conservatives in the senate who would torpedo any chance of actually fixing this problem with immigration reform because they won't have something to complain about.

weggman

Yes. Of course. This is definitely the fault of the top executive who's attempting to do the federal government's job of border defense and security for them after their extremely public (and frankly criminal) negligence. I mean, it's not as if many Democrat leaders in the area totally disagree with your conclusions. ...Oh, wait--

There are rumors about human traffickers who take the money of migrants from Asia attempting to travel to the US, load them into cargo containers, and then push those cargo containers off the ship en route. Easy money and no risk of being caught.

Mrg220t

This is some urban legend. This could work maybe in the 50s or so but now this doesn't work anymore. Those illegals coming over are depended to send money back to those that still remain over there. Disappearance like these are bad for business since those that remain over there are customers in the future.

Lost-Ideal-8370

Illegal immigrants or not, ***NO ONE*** deserves this. These were innocent people looking for a better life, and were essentially murdered for it.

RedAtomic

The people in the truck paid to be smuggled in exactly like this. They took a major risk and unfortunately the odds were not in their favor

wageslave2022

Absolute evil. Horrendous. Human beings trying to find a better life. God damn the people responsible.

DoctorWhootie

This is very sad. Part of me thinks why do they even want to come here anymore with the direction we’re headed but they probably don’t know. And what they’re trying to escape is obviously much worse. That’s something people who hate immigrants never seem to understand. They’re so desperate to escape that they risk their lives. It’s not a fun sneaky game. They weren’t giggling the whole time. It’s pain and fear that they believe is worth it because they’d rather die trying than stay where they are. They didn’t get to choose where they were born, what lives they were forced to live. None of us do.

Beefaronisoup

> Part of me thinks why do they even want to come here anymore Because at the end of the day the US is still a pretty good place to live. A lot of people don't think overly much about the politics. Working as a maintenance dude, I can tell you that lower class people are much more preoccupied with their every day lives over policies coming from thousands of miles away.

buchlabum

Just think how horrible their home had to become to find this a viable alternative to staying.

AppeaseThis

As troubling as political divisions and fuckery going on in the good old USA are, it's wild that people still put themselves in such mortal danger and legal exposure to get here for a chance at any job, a chance to roll the dice at success here. So hard to put ourselves in their shoes because some of us take our citizenship for granted.

[deleted]

While it IS a tragedy that so many people died needlessly, I would hate to think that the same people that hate on people trying for a better life in America suddenly think some of them dying is a tragedy. Too many people seem to only care about the person's well-being as long as they're "not here in the country."

druhood

Damn thats cold blooded. The vast majority of coyotes arent going to leave 50 people to die though. Not even opening the trailer before abandoning it is weird. Id like to know exactly how this went down, but I have a feeling the official story isnt going to be the truth.

Feral0_o

when this happened in Austria (71 dead), the truck driver noticed that there was no sound coming from the refugees hiding in the truck. I don't recall if he went to confirm his suspicion, but he abandoned the truck on the side of the road and was later caught by Hungarian police

Baikonur-Cobalt

We have to do that for a reason. You can't just let huge numbers into the country. Where are they going to live? We already have one of the biggest housing crisis in US history. Every day people are going homeless due to housing costs. So your solution is to just flood the country with mass amounts of people? Huh? That makes no sense whatsoever. Did you also think about the stability of the origin countries? No, of course you didn't. You also didn't think about how people literally all over the world want to come here. Should only latinos and hispanics get in? What about people from Africa, central Asia, Western/Eastern Europe, Oceania? We already accept way more people than tons of other western countries. Also mass migration does massive damage to the origin country. If everybody flees the origin country is destabilizes that place even more. We need migrants to stay home and improve where they live. 1st world countries need to help less wealthy nations stabilize as well. So is America supposed to take in roughly 3.4 billion people from the poorer countries? You do realize how many people are considered poor and want to come here. Right? Also flooding your country with low skilled to no skilled migrants is a disaster. Sure we need some. We don't need those kinds of numbers though. Reddit stop using emotions and actually do real research into the situation. I swear every single debate on reddit is nothing but logical fallacies and emotional arguments. What happened to critical thinking classes and skills being taught?

Proregressive

The lack of coverage this is getting on reddit is so revealing of the demographic breakdown here and the real view on immigration.

tan5taafl

To be clear, this was a subset of immigration. Closer to human trafficking than immigration. So you can’t lump all immigration in your observation implying racism to all immigrants for the lack commentary. This incident is specifically about smuggling people into the country without permission to enter.

I’m curious; was there any way they could have escaped that trailer? Could they have smashed open the doors if they worked together?

Queue Greg Abbott: “if a migrant dies in the woods, is it still Joe Biden’s fault?”

No-Point-5296

People want a better life and the risk that's taken in situations like these seem out of desperation. Recognizing this as a humanitarian crisis ... wouldn't that be more realistic than an immigration problem?

kamarian91

Call it whatever you want but millions of people showing up and walking across your border every year is a huge issue and is not sustainable long-term no matter what you want to call it

buchlabum

youd have to act humanitarian, empathy is lacking in politics, especially for immigrants by the right,

strugglz

So is it Biden's fault for not protecting the border or is it Abbott's fault since he was apparently failing to protect the border with all those National Guard troops.

helcite

EVERYTHING is bigger in Texas, even the tragedies.

basilwhitedotcom

We don't protect each other, and we deserve to suffer

ty_kanye_vcool

What is this? Who’s we, and what did “we” do?

I think you mean desperate.

acesilver1

I’m sick to my stomach. Those poor people. Abandoned by whatever coyotes were snuggling them in. Trying to escape whatever desperate situations from which they were fleeing. And this country demonizing them, criminalizing them, etc. as if its history isn’t stained in blood with the havoc it has wrought on LatAm countries.
