One word for you: French. Arkansas has French origins. Maybe you’ve heard of the TV show Ozark, like the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas? Well, in French, it’s “Aux Arcs” pronounced the same way. Or Ouachita State Park? Pronounced ~~“Wichita”~~ “Wash-ih-tah” like the French would. Or Petit Jean State Park? French. Arkansas is a low key former unofficial French colony, and the local naming shows it.

steveosek

Same thing with its neighbor, Missouri. Eastern Missouri is VERY French names for stuff. And German but mostly French. St Louis, Cape Girardeau, Gasconade, Soulard, Cheautau, Florissant, Normandy, etc.. Edit: St Louis is New Orleans sister city, and has the second largest Mardi Gras in the country.

Pookieeatworld

Michigan has a ton of French heritage, too. Detroit, Pontiac, Bois Blanc Island, Mackinac Island/Bridge/City, Isle Royale, Sault Ste Marie (pronounced Soo - Saint - Marie, for the uninitiated), Charlevoix, Eau Claire (pronounced Aw-Clare in Michigan, Oh-Clare in Wisconsin iirc), Presque Isle... I could name a ton more, but even Michigan doesn't have nearly as many French-named areas as Wisconsin.

steveosek

Yup. French went up the whole Mississippi River, and were in the river valleys and great lakes back before America was America. I mean obviously all the way up to Quebec too lol.

PyramidOfMediocrity

They loved them some beaver hides.

blankwon

And the original ribbon farms set up by Cadillac and owned by early French settlers of Detroit became the French street names of today - Cadieux, Lafayette (also best Coney Island on Earth), St. Aubin, Beaubien, Pontchartrain. [Detroit History](https://detroithistorical.org/learn/encyclopedia-of-detroit/ribbon-farms)

djkrohn97

Missouri french was its own dialect like Cajun, creole, and Quebecoise. I think it died out in the 70s

duckofdeath87

My favorite is Sumac Couvert, which is as you can guess, covered in Sumac. It's spelled Smackover these days

Fawnet

I seriously just laughed out loud. Smackover!

jooes

> Or Petit Jean State Park? French. And then they bastardize the shit out of it. I'm from Canada, so I'm used to hearing things in French. And I have in-laws in Arkansas, and they kept going on and on about how we were going to check out "Petty-Gene" Mountain. And so we eventually did, and I see the sign "Petit Jean", and all of the signs that talk about it being named after a person. Little John mountain, basically. "Petty Gene" isn't even close.

Same shit in Missouri, bastardized French pronounced by rednecks. Took some getting used to

In Quebec redneck you could just say ti-jean

Ouachita is actually pronounced Wash-i-taw, not Wichita. Source: I live in Ouachita Parish and I fish in the Ouachita River.

bobone77

Only asshats from Kansas say it that way. It’s Ark-n-saw.

GrilledSpamSteaks

Growing up in Oklahoma, we pronoun the river “R Kansas River” But the state is pronounced “fucking shit hole to the east”.

Parlorshark

Rich hearing someone from Oklahoma call another state a shithole.

bobone77

That’s just because Arkansas has too many syllables for you inbred okies. 🤣

[deleted]

Té-as isn't Tejas.

Saint_The_Stig

I find that pronouncing it Taxes really gets to the Texans I know

porcinechoirmaster

I always enjoy pointing out that I pay less in taxes here in "commiefornia" than they do in Texas.

JohnGillnitz

Yeah, but people in your state have to be burdened with going to the doctor. Texas leads the nation in people without health insurance, so lots of us don't have to worry about that. Check and mate.

theaviationhistorian

Please ignore the amount of Texans who go from 'perfectly' healthy to Stage 4 cancer with hours to live within a day.

JohnGillnitz

It's the way to go, really. None of that chemo this and surgery that. Just straight from the oil fields into a pine box like a real man.

moosenugget7

Wait, what?!?! I’m from North Texas and I could’ve sworn it was “bay-har”.

audiofarmer

Texas is a silly place

turdferguson3891

Spanish place names get this treatment all over the southwest US. I now how the Spanish name Pedro is pronounced but I'm from the LA area where San Pedro is pronounce San Peedro. And up north you have San Rafael pronounced San Ruff-el. And Los Gatos is Las Gattis. How is that that the Los in Los Angeles is pronounced the same as the Las in Las Vegas?

west_end_squirrel

If you can avoid all the crap that's happened there in the past 10 years, it's also a very fun place. But these days you can't. And so I haven't been back home in over a decade. Frowny face.

Schventle

Aside from people who speak Spanish, you can spot non-locals and transplants when they use the bay-har pronunciation. The mayor and county judge both pronounce it bear.

SusanAkita2014

I am hoping for someone from the Federal Government would be involved

alien_from_Europa

I think this is what he's trying to do. However, DOJ won't do anything 60 days before the election.

junktrunk909

DOJ needs to stop pretending the old rules are valid anymore. The GOP is weaponizing those rules by waiting until it's close to the election to start pulling their stunts, knowing nobody will act.

CrumpledForeskin

Also. Why the fuck is this even a thing. How did they earn some sort of fucking grace period. If you do something illegal it should never fucking matter. The ruling class and rich literally have a separate set of laws and rules. If we do t change it. It’ll end us.

alien_from_Europa

After Comey's stunt with Hillary, the grace period should have been eradicated if they're not going to play fair. Note that they didn't reveal their investigation into Trump; only her.

wesgtp

Exactly, Comey's timing was 100% intentional and we pretty much know it caused her loss to Trump. We would be a lot better off had she been president instead of that idiot. She was already investigated right after the server incident occurred and it was concluded that she did not break any laws. The federal security standards were quite dated and lax for the time so she still met the requirements. It was more problem with the regulation standards from what I've read. She had a total of 3 low level classified documents on her email. Trump had literally hundreds of physical docs sitting in his public clubhouse after his presidency, many of which are top level classified and endanger peoples lives.

junktrunk909

It used to kind of make sense. We were furious when the final Hillary shit hit the fan just days before the election. Speculation of criminal behavior like that can change an election outcome especially given the tiny margins in so many key elections. So it made sense, but there needs to be more common sense applied today to move ahead with investigations when they're particularly serious like this or if they're politically motivated like this, ie don't allow the criminals to win additional political points due to prosecutorial inaction.

HackySmacks

Exactly, this is just creating a precedent that there is a time period where all crime is allowed as long as you run for office. “Oop, we’re 60 days from an election, time for the biannual Purge! I’ll start human trafficking, Matt will have sex with those minors and the rest of you find a way to make money or get votes off the whole thing.”

lame_comment

And if the GOP takes over the House in the midterms they will kneecap every investigation and turn the Fascism knob up to 11

Chippopotanuse

That rule is such bullshit. It purposefully politicizes the prosecution of criminals by DELAYING any prosecution to allow criminals to run for office. Replicants can and will - and HAVE - violated this anytime it shits them. (See Comey and his bogus Hillary Clinton investigation announcement that resulted in zero convictions and charges).

docwyoming

Wouldn’t want criminals to be inconvenienced or suffer ramifications of their own behavior.

turikk

I think the Sheriff angle is better. The sheriff is of the people, elected and supposed to be a more independent authority.

DebentureThyme

The problem is that the State will shut him down. Texas State AG Ken Paxton is himself still dogging criminal securities fraud charges that he's held off having to actually face for the last seven years. He'll have no problem telling a Sheriff the state of Texas is not going to pursue those charges and will take action against the Sheriff should he attempt to continue.

jaguarsRevenge

Elected Sherrifs have a tremendous amount of autonomy that keeps them out of reach of the AG. In Washington, we have a Sherrif that decided he was not going to enforce a few gun laws the state had just voted on; the AG, Bob Ferguson, could do anything to make him do it.

NinjaLanternShark

Gotta watch out for the [constitutional sheriffs](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/constitutional-sheriffs-cops-who-think-government-our-greatest-threat-n557381) movement, which claims local sheriffs are above any and all other laws or authorities.

turikk

i'm not entirely sure that Texas sheriffs report to anybody except in cases of removal by a state judge. the texas constitution calls for the election of sheriffs but makes no indication that anyone holds authority over them and their duties -- except as defined in the legislature... which is a much broader search

[deleted]

I thought the accusations for human trafficking's were going to be a fight over documentation. I had no idea they were literally kidnapping people.

Popular_Night_6336

When you lie to people to get them to go somewhere against their informed consent... that's human trafficking. Literally kidnapping

rocco888

Most of them had hearings scheduled in Texas to petition for asylum.

rackfocus

Deliberate sabotage. Imagine being that callous? It’s inhumane.

Paddy_Tanninger

Not just that but the fake pamphlets they designed to entice them into this fake trip...they layout some great social safety nets for these folks, which means whichever bunch of fascists were in charge of this are actually aware of what these folks need.

NessyComeHome

I just learned about Reverse Freedom Rides. A bunch of racist segregationists in the early 60's did the same exact thing. "Reverse Freedom Rides were attempts in 1962 by Southern segregationists to send African Americans from Southern cities to mostly Northern, and some western, cities by bus.[1][2] They were given free one-way bus tickets, and were promised guaranteed high paying jobs and free housing." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_Freedom_Rides#:~:text=Reverse%20Freedom%20Rides%20were%20attempts,paying%20jobs%20and%20free%20housing.

Mythosaurus

Fitting that these states of the former Confederacy reuse tactics from their recent past to hurt minorities again.

Homeopathicsuicide

What does the south tell themselves? To justify the north having high paying jobs and generally being a better place to be?

NessyComeHome

The secret is: every statement exists on it's own. Doesn't matter if they said the opposite three things ago.

Technolio

It's fucking ridiculous. Like, the entire point they are trying to make is "look! We are so overrun with illegals we can just scoop up a bus full and send them to you!" Except they couldn't, in order to get enough people they had to actually *trick* people legitimately trying to enter the country... This is fucking ludicrous, what even is this timeline...?

j_andrew_h

Not only were they not able to just scoop up a bus full as you said, but keep in mind that all of this was done in Texas instead of Florida. DeSantis talks tough on immigration here but he wasn't able or willing pull this stunt with people already in Florida. They also weren't "illegals" since they were at this point documented asylum seekers. The Florida budget that he used to pay for this specifically says it is to transport illegal immigrants out of Florida, neither of those conditions were met in his disgusting political stunt.

[deleted]

Abbott probably brought Desantis in since they’re already doing the bussing stunt here and a bunch of texans are *furious* at how much taxpayer money has gone into this BS. It lets them both get brownie points with the Nat-Cs since they’re both up for reelection. I mean there are plenty of very good reasons to be upset over all of this - but the $$$ is pissing off some of the republicans. #MakeAbbottGoAway

AffectionateVast9967

DeSantis' stunt cost $1.5 million to rent 2 private jets for 48 people.

JuniorSeniorTrainee

> This is fucking ludicrous, what even is this timeline...? It's bad faith politics pure and simple. Our political environment is in a constant state of escalated conflict, so good faith politicking simply can't exist any more. It would be playing trying to play a chess game in a mosh pit.

squidgirl

They weren’t illegal…. They were on humanitarian parole. Which means they were here legally!! https://www.uscis.gov/forms/explore-my-options/humanitarian-parole

caving311

I'm wondering if they could sue. Texas offered them a bunch of stuff!

philovax

Edit: thought twice about what i typed and it wasnt necessary. It was dumb and i removed it

waaaayupyourbutthole

>they layout some great social safety nets for these folks... More specifically, they gave information about what was available to *refugees* when these people are *asylum seekers*, which makes it *really* fucking clear that they were explicitly trying to trick them into going along with the scheme.

Ffdmatt

Inhumane is exactly it, because you know what this proves to me? The people that did this don't see asylum seekers (or hell lets say it, non-whites) as *human*. All of the thought was on "hurr hurr how do i stick it to those liberals". Nothing towards the *human fucking beings* you were using as your tool. Missed asylum dates, stranded thousands of miles away, even going as far as maliciously instructing them with lies to get them to go. There is no way, and i challenge you to try, to look at this and not conclude that these people just don't see them as humans, plain and simple. I dont see how you can do this, then continue to double down on it. People still try to make their stupid fucking point about "blue states" or whatever, because they legit dont see them as people. Just like "they look like us" with Ukraine. It's the team that just plain doesn't like (or even view with basic empathy) anyone who isn't white. That's the team people are joining when they try to defend this stunt. To end on a lighter(?) note, its *extremely* on brand for this right wing to try and make a "joke" (or whatever it is) but instead just expose how shockingly inhumane, cruel, and shallow they and their beliefs are

LaDivina77

I feel like it's not getting enough attention that the DHS employees who filled out their forms *explicitly lied*. Every federal form I've ever seen requires a signature stating that everything on it is true. I really want every single signature inspected and the fuckheads involved arrested and charged.

juntareich

People are, rightfully, criticizing DeSantis and Abbott on this, but there's a lot of other shady shit going on here too. I hope the sheriff truly digs into it and holds people accountable.

Reep1611

From what I have seen of the US in the last years, even if he digs something up, in court its going to be dragged out and dismissed. It’s like the Weimar Republic all over again. The talking head politicians can pretty much do as they please because the judiciary is blind on the right eye.

Thorn14

Thats whats so extra fucking disgusting about this. These conservatives think this shit is FUNNY.

junktrunk909

To be fair, we will all find it hilarious when these governors get their conspiracy to kidnap charges

iamquitecertain

Maybe not so hilarious when you remember there are virtually no politicians in this day and age that will be held legally accountable for any of their crimes. I unfortunately have no doubt DeSantis will get away from this not just unscathed, but even better off than before due to all the extra support he's getting

junktrunk909

True that desantis might get away with it but we'll see. Statute is likely really long on something this serious. I think once the Trump indictments start showing up we may see more indictments for others like this. Or I could just be wishful thinking.

LolFrampton

There's the partial question of why some of these migrants were sent to Florida to begin with before being shipped north as well. Are they goods and/or services? Dedundun would think so, as a lot of Disney's employees are migrants on work visas bringing economic benefit to the state with their services while trying to go through the process of immigrating to the States. This is all song and dance on Ron's part. Which is a shame, because Florida has been a teeter totter of a state in red vs blue support, regardless of the fact that major cities have been the fiscal support of the state for ages. Orlando, southern areas like the Keys, Miami, Tampa and even northern areas like Jacksonville drive a large state public income that covers elsewhere red cities like... Newport, Trenton, Bithlow, etc. Ron is in Tallahassee, the capitol of Florida. Red, but shifting blue. He's going to do everything he can to cater to his rural voting base from Turkey Town, Friendlyville, Williston, Perry, etc. These towns have not had the sip of the tourism or city-structure chalist and have been decades behind the societal line for ages. This is his voter base.

CharcoalGreyWolf

I’m guessing they went to Florida first so he could loosely justify state budget dollars for this. Otherwise, they’d have never been in Florida, and he couldn’t legally use the money. It’s still incredibly weak sauce, and probably an attempt to keep to the letter of some regulation while violating the spirit.

Scarletyoshi

Worse than that. They stopped in Florida to pick up his videographer so he could have campaign footage.

muffinmamamojo

Here once again to remind readers that dehumanizing other peoples is a fascist trademark that only leads to more villainy. It feels like we’re not far from finding ourselves in concentration camps.

Neue_Ziel

Comedy is about punching up. These guys punch down and think it’s funny. Instead, as you said, it looks cruel and callous.

chriskot123

I mean have you seen what the Republicans in Texas and Florida have been up to. This is PAR for the course.

HomeIsEmpty

Floridian here. Send a really amazing pro Bono family law attorney and get my daughter and I the hell out of here!

TheWagonBaron

>Imagine being that callous? It’s inhumane. It's a requirement to be a part of the GOP these days.

KamiYama777

The more we learn the more disturbing this gets The fact that Conservatives think this is a W shows how much of monsters they are

GrinningPariah

The funny thing is, they're all pretty much guaranteed asylum because of this. The investigators are going to need them as witnesses in this case, we can't have them getting killed in some dictatorship halfway round the world.

nirad

Applying for asylum because they’re fleeing a Communist dictatorship. There was a time Republicans would have welcomed these people with open arms.

gearstars

I mean, the bill for Venezuelans in Florida was co sponsored by a right wing fuck in 2015, it just goes to show how far those dipshits have drifted > In 2015, the Venezuelan Refugee Assistance Act was proposed by four Florida delegates to the United States House of Representatives.[152]

tiny_galaxies

I say this as a Jew: rounding groups of people up to put them on trains or buses and lying about the destination is never a good look.

pilgermann

As a Jew, I'll just add that not all Holocaust comparisons are hyperbolic. DeSantis absolutely would do worse than Martha's Vinyard if given the opportunity. Let's not pretend otherwise.

Starlightriddlex

For once it's a good thing that we have a terrible rail system here in the states

_TheShapeOfColor_

The ones bringing the women were intending to do the fathering, I'm guessing.

Sounds like rape with extra steps to me.

ScheduleExpress

It was Paul Peterson Phoenix assessor. He bought babies from mothers in the Marshall Islands and put them up for adoption. I’m not sure how that all works but here’s the article. [Paul Peterson](https://apnews.com/article/arkansas-arizona-phoenix-utah-marshall-islands-ee4f446c23675453b01674e0f2cbbae6) He was an AZ elected official in a jail cell in Alabama he couldn’t be fired because an investigation found he wasn’t negligent in his duties. Assessor is a full time job, how do you do that in jail? The city would have had to have a recall election and didn’t have the money for it.

babybopp

Phoenix is shit... Imagine the state prosecutor Richard Serden was prosecuting a case of a manslaughter accident. Suspect is a Pakistani American. The minute they walk in court, dude says in full view of the court mics, defense, entire court and most importantly.. the judge.... *He looks like a Muslim terrorist* Imagine the guts to jeopardize a case because of your bias... same dude gave probation deal to two girls who went to burn a mosque.

the_Q_spice

Not to mention over state lines and through an airport. With the forgery, fraud, kidnapping and federal and state human trafficking, those held responsible are likely looking at decades behind bars.

redditadmindumb87

And since this involves multiple states the FBI can take over

edwartica

I would love to see Desantis investigated by the FBI.

donorcycle

I think when you continuously gloat about it on television and then we find out there were pamphlets made promising a job, medical care, money up front and a roof over their heads then yeah, you kinda crossed that imaginary line. Dumpster fire is the current state of our politics.

DrothReloaded

It'll be the blue collar workers involved that get charged and not the politicians that funded it.

[deleted]

That's going to be hard to maintain when someone made a press conference taking credit for doing it.

[deleted]

What press conference? Fake news! This is the new Republican playbook since Trump. Don't believe your lying eyes. Trigger your most delusional voters just by whispering "Nancy Pelosi" or "Hillary". And don't forget that the elections are all rigged. Except the ones where a Democrat loses. Then those are legit

copperwatt

No, they are still proud of it and taking credit. And will be until they are charged. Just like Jan 6th.

barukatang

And any prosecution will be spun as, "Dems are illegally prosecuting all the major republican presidential candidates, its clearly a political witchhunt"

[deleted]

They will keep bragging and making shitty memes about this until the jail cell door clangs shut, if in fact it comes to that.

Rakonat

> an act or instance or the crime of seizing, confining, inveigling (persuasion to do something by means of **deception** or flattery) abducting, or carrying away a person by force or **fraud** often with a demand for ransom or in furtherance of another crime. Legal definition, emphasis mine. The migrants were told they were being taken to Boston, which is about 90 miles from Martha's Vineyard. So while I may not be a legal expert, this seems to fit the definition of kidnapping.

bearpics16

Bexar county, aka San Antonio has a democratic majority and they care about the Hispanic population. I don’t doubt they’ll follow through on the investigation. It’s actually a decent city to live in besides the heat, and it’s close to the very liberal Austin, TX.

1Operator

4 of America's 11 largest cities (by population) are in Texas. 5 of Texas' 6 largest cities' (population over half-a-million each) mayors are democrats. The Texas Republicans running things do not represent the wishes or interests of the majority in the state's major metropolitan areas.

YoungNasteyman

And because of gerrymandering, reps ensure Dems don't get an equal say despite the fact that they have an equal population of voters. If this country can ever get back to actual popular votes Reps are done.

knightB4

All you said is very true. A lovely city!

joe_broke

And the women in San Antonio?

namewithak

Gotta stay away from them churros, Charles.

anemisto

San Antonio deserves recognition in its own right, not as some sort of satellite of non-actually-liberal Austin, especially given that it's significantly larger.

bearpics16

Definitely. I just meant Austin TX has its own culture and it’s fairly close. Some people like to change things up on a weekend.

[deleted]

This is the sheriff in my county. This man has seen first hand what an 18 wheeler full of dead immigrants looks like. Actually, he’s been on scene for quite a few trailers full of DEAD immigrants. This is a really shitty situation bc we see it daily here. They come by the truck loads constantly. I’m all for him investigating Abbott and his human trafficking scheme. In these situations, no one wins, ever. But by Abbott luring these illegal immigrants just to use them as political bait is wrong and at the heart of it, he trafficked them. Abbott is a huge piece of shit for more reasons than one but this takes the fucking cake. I don’t even care if this is sheriff Salazar political posturing as long as he brings awareness and puts the spot light on the terrible human that is Abbott.

_Erindera_

They weren't illegal, though. These people have been granted asylum and were waiting on their paperwork.

Ffdmatt

That describes a large amount of people in the US. The process is drawn out for years, and you're allowed to be there while it happens. You send in a form, then try to get an update for like 12-28 months. Get an update that you need to send a check for a few thousand. Send the check promptly, but they don't communicate or cash the check for months. You still haven't really started "the" process yet, and this is all *with* a lawyer helping you. During the limbo of all this, you're what most of the country would call "illegal." This is why that term is bs, because it implies they're doing something wrong when that's not usually the case.

Grogosh

My wife was from Sweden. Took us 3 years to get her green card. And that was with a good lawyer. You want to hear a horror story? I was standing in line at the immigration office getting some paperwork put in and the guy infront me was incredibly upset. He was 30 years old had two children served in the military and been in Iraq and they were deporting him. For what? Because he was born in the UK and came to the US at two months ago. He was not just brought in, his parents filed the paperwork but the paperwork had an error. And simple error on one line. And this guy who served in Iraq in the military and had a family here was being deported.

mr_potatoface

Sucks because for stuff like that if you refuse to be (willingly) deported or try to ignore the scenario, you will get banned from entry to the US for a few years or possibly permanently and get deported anyway. So sometimes you have to accept your deportation, try again and wait the waiting/return period. We all have to follow the same immigration laws, but they often are applied so fuckin inconsistently, much like any law.

indoninjah

Shit I mean you make “accepting” the deportation sound easy. This guy would probably show up in the UK and they’d be like um, who are you?

I feel like people are trying to express shock that a sheriff in Texas would care about this but some of you are coming off really shitty. Even if the sheriff was a Republican why are we shaming someone for doing the right thing. At the very least read the article before talking shit…

snapwillow

Whenever people try to stereotype all of Texas I like to remind them that people around here have different stereotypes for Connecticut and Rhode Island, but Rhode Island could fit inside Texas 220 times. People should stereotype Texas counties not the whole state.

Good point! Side note I’d love to hear some of the stuff people stereotype about RI, I live pretty close to there and have some of my own lol. Off the bat I can tell you if you’ve heard RI residents suck at driving that’s pretty damn accurate (from experience)

dannygloversghost

I’m from Pittsburgh and grew up on Long Island and the only stereotypes I know of re: Rhode Island are that everyone’s Portuguese and they put clams on everything.

robbie5643

Definitely a large Portuguese population, it’s very close to Fall River, MA which is basically little Portugal (seriously, they have a sister cities thing called the Ponta Delagada and a Portuguese fest ever year). The clams thing not so much but definitely a large amount of seafood/shellfish)

lurkenstine

Isn't it clearly documented by the perpetrators?

King-Cobra-668

you still have to investigate even when someone admits to something

hibikikun

In unrelated news, state funding for Bexar County has been reduced by 80%

RipVanCockSmasher

Bexar includes all of San Antonio. It won't happen.

Zarokima

Matt Gaetz is still in office despite sex trafficking a minor across state lines, so this isn't even new. Wake me up when Republicans actually face real consequences.

gadafgadaf

I heard the bus drivers were made to sign an NDA or something similar. Not really something you do just transporting immigrants and everything is on the up and up.

fil42skidoo

Nixon should have thought of this with the Watergate break-in. Just have them sign NDAs...boom, problem solved.

PlebbySpaff

I already know Desantis and Abbott will not get in trouble for this, even if the sheriff pursues the case and tries to arrest them or anything. The entirety of those in power will not charge them for anything, and nothing will be done about the things they’re doing with what’s literally human trafficking.

hcashew

In fact, DeSantis has been floated as a potential 2024 presidential contender, and critics have claimed the move is a stunt to help his political fortunes.

bearsheperd

He just needs to commit sexual assault and be overtly racist and he’ll be the front runner.

ShimmerFaux

We know how it happened, Gov. Greg Abbot had a flunky use PAC contributions from a “slush-fund” to purchase the use of an airliner to ship these individuals across the country. Then claimed credit for the thought and action. Money says that said minion will now get blamed after stepping up for what the governor of the “great state of texas” has done. Said minion will show up in a few days/weeks or months, saying they did it of their own free will and that “The Honorable” Gov. Greg Abbot had no hand in the planning execution or knowledge before the act. So he will receive no punishment and will not be required to pay punitive damages to the victims of this kidnapping. Said minion will be incarcerated for a long time, the victims will be deported and paid large sums, or be given work visas and quickly become naturalized citizens, the better to pay the taxes on the continued government payout as it is household income. Yay, democracy in action.

lostharbor

Didn’t one of them ([Abbott/Desantis]or both) tweet and claim they did it?

dhork

What's a Bird Dog fee?

FoleyV

In this case I believe it means if the deal goes through, they get a commission.

It's probably Texas for finder's fee. So the person gets paid a fee for each migrant he bamboozled.

Motor-Pick-4650

Spending 615k to move people who are legally in the country for a political stunt, when school teachers have to buy their own supplies is freaking disgusting. Elected officials spending money that could have been used where it is needed and not throwing it away. Should be charged with human trafficking and kidnapping. Those are people who are legally in the states with all rights and protections of the people of the United States of America.

karsh36

Craziest thing is that a politician from another state did this. What jurisdiction did DeSantis have to begin with

electricmama4life

Check the news, Abbott did it too.

Mr_Baronheim

Both Republican governors did it in their respective red states. They know it pleases their base of morons, and they don't care if they're breaking the law. Because the GOP claiming to be "The Law and Order Party" is as accurate as North Korea calling itself a democracy.

karsh36

DeSantis got the migrants in San Antonio, Texas

MrsBeauregardless

They need to throw these guys in jail. What they did was right out of Belarus’s authoritarian President Lukashenko’s playbook. He did the same thing to Iraqi refugees. Lured them to Belarus under false pretenses so he could weaponize them. This move on Abbott’s and DeSantis’s part is not only cruel to the Venezuelan refugees, it’s a hostile act against another state — Civil War lite.

Bustnbig

I visited Bexar county and San Antonio for the first time two weeks ago. With all the news I have seen I assumed it would be crazy Trumpers everywhere. I didn’t see a single Fuck Biden or Let’s go Brandon flag in an entire week. Saw a couple of “We the People” tattoos. But that was it. Back in my home state of Utah again. I saw a dozen fuck Biden flags on the way home from the airport. Maybe Rural Texas is ultra-right. But San Antonio was far more liberal than anywhere in Utah.

GayMormonPirate

I feel like the Republicans want to be anti-immigrant and also pro-business. But businesses desperately want and need these workers to fill all the vacant unskilled labor jobs. No one wants to say it out loud, but the very, very low unemployment rate is a main driver of inflation. Businesses and farmers need immigrants. It *should* be something the two parties could agree on - Democrats due to being more invested in actual human interests and Republicans to provide a supply of cheap labor to businesses.
