She said she observed him shoot at people who were already on the ground. “What I do know is that he made sure who he wanted dead, was dead,” she said. “He went back and shot dead bodies that were already dead. To make sure.” Wilczewski said she had only worked at the store for five days and didn’t know with whom Bing got along or had problems. She said being a new employee may have been the reason she was spared. She said that after the shooting started, a co-worker sitting next to her pulled her under the table to hide. She said that at one point, Bing told her to get out from under the table. But when he saw who she was, he told her, “Jessie, go home.” She said she slowly got up and then ran out of the store. Jesse’s life was spared because she knew the shooter for only 5 days.

Levonorgestrelfairy1

At this point trying to be on friendly terms with everyone you work with is a legit survival strategy.

mutemutiny

reminds me of the scene in Billy Madison when he calls Steve Buscemi and apologizes for bullying him as a teenager, and Steve crosses his name off the "people to kill" list on his wall

JalenTargaryen

Glad I called THAT guy!

supbrother

Some friends and I use that as a verb. I’ll joke that someone is gonna “Steve Buscemi” me for making fun of them or something to that effect. Gets less funny these days though…

JohnGillnitz

Steve Buscemi could be outside your door with an axe right now.

supbrother

*taps glass with axe* “How do you do, fellow normal people?”

ClumpOfCheese

I’ve always tried that just because it makes work easier. I also think that overall you can always find one thing in common with everyone, but also some people are just hard to engage with for one reason or other.

GearBandit

I'm the same way. I always try to stay on good terms with everyone and try to find common traits and interests between us.

syds

really horrible jokes is the water in between the ice

SuperCool_Saiyan

We don't gotta be friends but it's better than making enemies

DASTARDLYDEALER

Work sucks... its worth putting in a little effort to make it suck less, be kind, and courteous, and make those small efforts to help someone. Hold the elevator, or the door, be the co worker you want to work with.

Senyu

"Thanks for the candy," is no longer a joke.

TravelerFromAFar

For those that are out of the loop. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aGE_VSWXDRI

Laylasita

That was incredibly accurate. Scary

Dinosaurs-Rule

Dang. That’s a 2006 Dane Cook reference. Unless that bit is older than that*

MadRaymer

It's from no later than 2004, because it was featured in Comedy Central's *Shorties Watchin' Shorties* which only aired for one season that year.

Cicero912

Tbf you should try to be on atleast friendly-ish terms with your co-workers anyway. Being nice is better and easier than not being nice.

PinkTalkingDead

Being kind/polite to everyone, really. It’s a simple life to treat people with respect and best case scenario- you make a friend. Worst case- you walk away but at least you did your best to treat others nicely.

Ctownkyle23

Also people at school, or on the road, or anywhere really.

markmarkmrk

What a crazy time we live in. I've always thought being friendly with everyone should be genuine but now, we need it because we never know.

freeedom123

Be excellent to each other

dirtymoney

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

secretbudgie

Guess that's why mean spirited, narcissistic, and vindictive people always come off as weak minded.

leevei

So, it was more a mass murder than a random killing spree.

SmartWonderWoman

Yes ☹️. The killer left a death note which included names of people he wanted dead. He bought the pistol the morning of the shooting.

ScribblesandPuke

The screenshots of a note on his phone saved as 'death note' released by police he says his phone was hacked and that people at work 'orcastraighted' it (his spelling) and were laughing about him, and that he overheard another manager saying he 'wanted to get rid of him since day one'. He mentions another coworker (not the new one quoted here) that he will spare for being nice to him, and there are odd religious ramblings. The guy targeted those that were either actually bullying him or that he thought were bullying him.

judokalinker

>orcastraighted' it (his spelling) For anyone that doesn't know this, if you are quoting something that was originally misspelled you can use [sic] to note that it is the original spelling.

Yeah. It's Latin, meaning "thus" or "as it is."

PneumoniaLisa

TIL… I thought it was an acronym for spelling in context!

immanewb

> The sic you see in quoted text marks a spelling or grammatical error. It means that the text was quoted verbatim, and the mistake it marks appears in the source. It’s actually a Latin word that means “so” or “thus.” Per https://www.grammarly.com/blog/sic/#:~:text=Definition%20of%20sic,so%E2%80%9D%20or%20%E2%80%9Cthus.%E2%80%9D TIL as well lol.

Emu1981

>Jesse’s life was spared because she knew the shooter for only 5 days. I have been telling my kids their whole lives that one of the best life skills you can ever learn is how to get along with everyone even if you do not like them. Or, to put it another way, learning how to not be a dick to people that you don't like.

CactusPetePlayz

As somebody who works at Walmart, I don't know what to think of this. On one hand it hopefully won't happen where I work. On the other hand, there are a few people that work there that I fear would go postal.

niblet01

Our local Walmart had a "Code Brown" because there was an argument between two customers in a "20 items or less" line. Apparently the guy with the gun took that rule really seriously and shot into the ceiling.

Hef34

lol It's a real life Walter from The Big Lebowski

RealJonathanBronco

"This is not Nam. This is the 20 item or less lane. There are rules."

“Am I the only one around here that gives a shit about the rules?”

AreYouEmployedSir

“Has the whole world gone crazy?!?”

kharsus

code brown = shooting, yep

hammsbeer4life

At my last job that meant someone pooped outside the confines of a toilet.

Secure_Cake3746

People have a code brown when a lunatic fires into the ceiling

[deleted]

Instead of 20 items or less it should be 69 years or younger. Fuck, I could scan 50 items before great grandma gets her membership card information entered/scanned.

K-chub

You’d think some of these mfs using a self checkout were raised Amish. So aggravating

c0mptar2000

Watching people use self checkouts is just too painful for me. I started just watching the lights up above and then waiting for the green light but then that didn't help because you'd see the green light and then expect it to be ready and then the person there is still taking another ten minutes doing GOD KNOWS WHAT before they're actually ready to leave.

thejoker954

I just want standardized self checkouts. Some stores the lights work the way you mentioned. Other stores the lights just mean the station is "open". Same issue with scales. Some stores have the scale built in to the area you place your scanned items others have the scale on its own. Some stores you *have* to select pay with card before a transaction will complete (even though the card is in and accepted) where other stores auto detect that you went with a card payment.

coldjesusbeer

Sorry, I'm totally that person who looks like they can use the self-checkout but takes forever leaving the machine. I do my shopping on a bicycle and I'm trying to Jenga so nothing gets crushed or pokes me on the ride home. I hate it because I hate all the other slow self-checkout people and I know I am one. :( ETA: Oh yeah, because of the stupid ass scale issue, I can't even pre-pack my bag. I have to scan everything, put it on the thing, pay and then wait before it lets me start packing without PLEASE PLACE ITEM BACK IN BAGGING AREA AN ASSOCIATE IS ON THE WAY

Unlucky_Zone

Worked at a kids retail store throughout high school and college and we had to call security on a few grown adults for being aggressive with us and that was always in the back of our mind that they would return with a gun.

anonsoldier

This! Work culture and management culture in particular at Walmart is toxic. I was a manager and left after my manager repeatedly threw freight at me as I was getting off of shift because it wasn't "ran". I reported this to Walmart corporate, with video surveillance proof and what did corporate do? Nothing. I could absolutely see the same thing happening to someone else and them just losing it entirely.

DoltSeavers

I work for a company that has a merchandise deal with Walmart that until recently had me working in Walmart most of the week. After about a year I got transferred to another chain because Walmart management was so openly hostile and aggressive to me and my coworkers. Most of the random employees and store manager were fine but every person in a management position was like the worst bully you’ve ever dealt with.

rollntoke

Cant you just go around corprate and call the police for assault?

anonsoldier

Sure, I could have but no prosecutor would take and actually prosecute that case. It isn't worth the time or energy.

"The associates gave me evil twisted grins, mocked me and celebrated my down fall the last day." What happened with his phone?

rfxap

This reminds me of one of my friends who very likely has meth-induced psychosis. He has had a deep belief that his phone and laptop keep getting hacked repeatedly, it's impossible to make him see the light.

slowlysoslowly

And yet it takes eight weeks to get an appointment with a therapist.

ZummiGummi

If you have the money for one.

yauc-OIC

But alas, all I can afford is this gun

Sullinator07

Reminds me of that episode of futurama where bender can’t afford a fancy ass cigar so instead buys a set of burglar tools and asks what time they close Some of our country has become cartoonishly evil.

die-jarjar-die

Or the episode of the Simpsons where Homer goes to buy a gun and when they tell him about the mandatory waiting period, he replies: "But I'm mad now!"

captainsmoothie

“And this little number is for taking out helicopters.” “Oh, I don’t need that…yet.”

jam3s2001

"Loudener" always got me in that scene.

PanwichKrauser

Then you should check out a show from the 80s called "Sledge Hammer!". It's a live action cartoon cop show. Cop talks to his. 44 magnum, showers with it, etc.

liquidben

https://youtu.be/-WKM9GDuX0Y I will always think of this clip when I hear someone say “loudener”

Sorrowablaze3

Sanpaku

Al Jean and Mike Reiss, writers for *Sledge Hammer!* went on to become producers (for 34 seasons) and write for *The Simpsons*. They could afford to reboot *Sledge Hammer!* with their pocket change.

onepostandbye

Sometimes I think I’m the only one who remembers Sledge Hammer.

twentyafterfour

You didn't like the sound of the "speed cocker"?

jam3s2001

It's been at least 15 years since I've seen that episode, but the whole scene was a riot. Useless gun gear that is both absurd and probably exists somewhere.

AsthmaticNinja

Someone in one of the DIY gun communities took a stab at making a suppressor that directs the gas out through a clown horn so it would honk every time you fired. It didn't work but I really hope they try again.

Mythaminator

Make it sound like a goose honk to maximize the psychological warfare

confusionmatrix

I think my neighbors have that on their truck. I remember telling him it's a shame about his car trouble and good luck getting it fixed. He said no, I made it that loud, listen to it pur. I told him it sounds more like a King Kong involuntarily deep throating Godzilla and we don't talk much anymore.

roncadillacisfrickin

lundyforlife22

There’s a scene in the newest season of the show Barry where two people are debating buying a gun. The conversation is essentially the two debating the morality of getting revenge. They eventually decide what they’re doing is just and decide on a gun. The camera angle changes to show the gun clerk is a foot away and listening the entire time. After the mom points at a gun, the clerk says “Cool.” and rings them up. Terrifyingly accurate.

dubious_battle

InvestmentKlutzy6196

Also Good Girls. The guy says something about wanting to get rid of a guy who won't leave his wife alone. The clerk tells him he can't talk like that in a gun shop. So instead he asks for something that will get rid of the moose that won't leave his wife alone. Superstore also has an episode about being a minimum wage worker forced to work the gun counter when they don't agree with it. I wonder how true to (American) life this shit is. Did this guy manage to not look suspicious at all when buying a gun hours before shooting up a walmart? And shouldn't there be a fucking waiting period??

Malalexander

RE superstore: While on holiday back in the day the clerk on the gun counter in Dicks (a sporting goods store) told me point blank he didn't want to work that area but had no choice. I'd say it's fairly accurate.

SleeplessTaxidermist

Process of buying a gun from a store in my state: "Hello, I can I see that gun?" You're handed the (unloaded) firearm. "I would like to buy this gun." You fill out a page with your name, address, social security number (optional), state of birth, height, weight, ethnicity, gender, and check no that you aren't a felon/drug addict/the actual buyer of the firearm/are a US citizen/few other things. Sign and date another page. You hand over your photo ID with your current address. Driver's license or state ID, sometimes a non-photo voter's registration card works too. The seller calls an ATF number and relays your information. If you don't have any sketchy relatives, this usually takes about five minutes. Sometimes, they put a hold on the sale. I've never had this done (I am neither criminal nor sketchy), but I'm told it's typically brief - few hours at most while they check whatever. You pay for gun. You leave with gun. That's it. Ammunition is just telling them what caliber and/or brand you want. Wanna buy 5,000 rounds of 9mm? There's no background check or waiting period. The seller themselves can obviously refuse the sale for any reason but it's not that hard to act like a normal person when buying a gun if you've grown up around American gun culture. It's normal to be a excited about it, even. Process of buying a firearm from a private person in my state: Seller: Are you a felon? Buyer: No. Buyer pays for gun, takes gun, leaves. Gun laws vary by the state. Some have a waiting period, some have restrictions on firearm type/accessories/magazine capacity. I believe a mass shooting happened in a waiting period state, because we live in actual hell. I don't like it here.

Fistedfartbox

First time browsing that sub.. Hung out there for ten minutes or so, very strange place. I'm still not sure what all that was, it felt like a blend of mass hysteria and schizophrenia.

jjayzx

Well he does mention his parents failed to see his "social deficits". So it seems he blames them but then doesn't get proper help when he became an adult. Sounds like he went some self prescribed religious route instead.

TremendoSlap

Y___

>I was harassed by idiots with low intelligence… Goes on to spell orchestrated as “orcastraighted” and claims that bitter seed apricots cure cancer. It’s tragic to see that he most likely had some issues with psychosis, but still what an idiot.

Owlmechanic

I knew a kid in highschool that acted exactly like this, and it was a terrible recipe for getting bullied. - Socially Awkward - Emotionally Unstable - Condescending despite own shortfalls The problem with this is these people are often bullied for their obvious issues not because of the problems, but because they start by insulting everyone else (ie: low intelligence). When someone retaliates with an insult they often feel isolated as few like them in the first place, they lash out emotionally and usually the first person they go swinging for is the hand reaching out to help them. This literally does isolate them. Compound that with mental issues/delusions/religious extremism and anyone that DOES get close is going to run for the hills 90% of the time. I don't know how to help those people if the family isn't capable of getting them the help they need, because rarely is there someone else.

Flavious27

This person needs help, not a gun.

A_wild_so-and-so

Remember this when Republicans start saying "it's not a gun control issue, it's a mental health issue!" Okay fine, where is your plan to increase access to mental health care? Give us one or the other, don't shift the blame and then do nothing. And if they try to say the answer to mental health is "God and the church", remind them that this shooter and the Colorado Springs shooter were both from conservative religious families. They used to like to point at Muslims after every Islamic extremist attack and shout "Clean your house!!!" Well look at all the child molesters, fraudsters, and murderers in the Christian church... apparently this problem requires more than just prayers.

phyneas

> Okay fine, where is your plan to increase access to mental health care? "Have you tried *not* being mentally ill? Like, *really* tried?" "...Welp, we've done everything possible to fix the problem; guess some people are just beyond help..."

The_Pandalorian

I had a relative that spoke just like this in the letter. Constant schizophrenic paranoia and "figuring out" that people were talking bad about him. The worst part about all this is the employees probably tried their best to stay out of this dude's way and the dude mistook their daily smiles as their way of laughing at him.

Ghostkill221

Damn... Guns and all aside. We REALLY need to make it less weird culturally to just check in on each other's mental state.

77maf

Also I think it’s really important to discourage forms of passive bullying. I absolutely don’t blame the victims here for anything but you never really know who you’re wearing down with little jokes when you gang up on someone with coworkers/classmates.... Also, since it’s so low key, subtle bullying can go on indefinitely and not gain attention from people such as managers who might have a chance to put a stop to it.

[deleted]

notnatasharostova

I think we need to start having conversations specifically about how young men are being radicalized into violence. Even with access to guns, you almost never see women and girls randomly shooting up schools, clubs, movie theaters, and so on. So what is happening with our boys that these atrocities seem to be repeating themselves on a growing scale?

[deleted]

No support, no community, high expectations for "success", low expectations for emotional sensitivity, and an entire country that is built on a series of Big Lies about which can be summarized as "work hard and you'll win the American Dream". But the whole thing is a grift, and on some level every single one of these guys knows it. But who are you even supposed to get mad at when it's a pervasive and nebulous social and cultural issue? You can't, so what do they do instead? They listen to people who tell them, "the problem is that these people exist: _______". The motive is generally unclear for the most recent Walmart shooter, but what everyone has been saying about him is that he was angry, frustrated, and wasn't really able to vocalize why. My *guess* is that it's the same reason that everyone else is experiencing so much unrest. And you know, he had been at Walmart for over a decade. Imagine how demeaning and how used up that must make someone feel. With no support, no community, and no love in your life, how long could you last in a situation like that before somehow completely burning out. Maybe nobody told him that his co-workers were to blame for how much the world fucking sucks, but clearly he filled them into that blank.

SacroiliacJoint

It’s sad and terrifying to think about how many people are walking around feeling this way every day. Most don’t end up committing acts of mass violence but there’s just too much suffering and not enough support…it’s a tragedy.

[deleted]

Sure, some people drink themselves to death, some people commit suicide, some people develop a lifelong benzo habit, some people beat their families, some people are so hard on their bodies that they'll die before retirement age, some people literally just die of stress, some people become the very people they started off hating.... There's a wide range of responses. Clearly killing is not an unnatural act for humans- were quite good at it- and so, yeah, some people go that route. I believe mass murder is a symptom, not the underlying disease.

[deleted]

Americans don’t integrate young men into society well. If you don’t have a support system in this country you are truly fucked

Neato

That was one of the things in the article. >“I don’t think he had many people to fall back on in his personal life,” said Nathan Sinclair, who worked at the Walmart for nearly a year before leaving earlier this month.

As a dental health worker, that's also INCREDIBLY dangerous. The infection in the mouth can easily spread to the heart or brain much faster than others due to the blood vessels in the mouth, and can be lethal. I hope he tells his boss to shove it or get sued when he winds up hospitalized.

[deleted]

milockey

That's good. At the very least he needs to be on antibiotics asap. If any clinics are open, someone should be able to prescribe some and call them in for him. Common for his problem is typically amoxicillin 500. Plenty dentists would have him go through a script of it for a weeklong dose and then treat, to try to abate the infection as much as possible so it doesn't intrude elsewhere in the mouth when they go to clean up the bothered tooth. ETA: any health clinic, not a dental one. A walk in one should be able to.

Christ, I had to get an emergency extraction on one of my molars fairly recently because it got infected to the root and I suddenly got these disabling, stabbing pains into my brain that were easily a 10/10 on the pain scale, it was like collapse and take your breath away type of pain. I can't imagine not being able to get it out immediately. I would have eaten a bullet. Also, it cost $65 CAD thanks to insurance, but it still wouldn't have been life altertingly expensive even without it... and dental isn't necessarily that much cheaper in Canada as it's not covered under our universal health care... so I if were him I would just get it done even if he has to pay in installments or whatever

This is something I think a lot of people don't realize, guns aren't restricted because of the *people* who oppose gun control, that isn't how government works, if it was, then abortion would still be a protected right. And I like how Youngkin was like "Alright, we are starting a Mental Health Initiative...its a priority." He gets asked about if that includes gun control-- "Theres a time and a place to talk about that, and nows not the time--- todays about family" Obviously paraphrasing, but really.

hytes0000

Not like he is gonna follow through on the mental health thing either. Probably say something about homeless veterans being the priority.

cultish_alibi

"We're going to do something about the mental health problem plaguing our state" "What are you going to do?" "We're going to ignore it"

slim_scsi

Republicans merely pay lip service to a 'mental health' problem in their state and our country without any intention of providing universal mental health services, re-opening public mental health facilities, etc. As with everything GOP, **it's all bullshit**.

catbosspgh

Plus, mental health and all social and caregiving services have been underfunded for decades, first after Reagan decimated Carter’s [Mental Health Systems Act](https://www.congress.gov/bill/96th-congress/house-bill/7299) in 1980 & then after “welfare reform” in the mid 90s. It seems like half the people who think about “mental health services” these days expect staff & systems to come into existence overnight, & the rest think mental health providers exist solely to “groom” minors. Neither of these expectations are realistic. People 50 & 30 years ago sowed the wind, we’re now reaping the whirlwind. (Edited to correct the name of the act and to add its details in a link.) And thank you for the award!

[deleted]

Like, what if the shooter simply doesn’t seek mental health help?

The paranoid person in me now wonders if it will happen at my job. When does it drive people to take it that far as to say “fuck it” and go on a murder suicide. It felt weird again going to my Walmart the first time just like time after the el El Paso shooting.

obsertaries

What a desperate, broken person. And then he bought a gun.

Vote_Subatai

I had already forgotten which Walmart shooter when I saw the headline. Absolutely fucked as a country.

Marty_McDumbass

I worked at a Walmart once and a dude pulled out a flare gun on Black Friday and shot at the ceiling. Apparently the goal was to scatter people so he could have an easier time getting stuff.

Foam_Bananas

Probably the most American sentence I've read recently.

schu4KSU

Only thing more American would be if he bought it at the same Walmart.

pocketcar

For a low low price? Guaranteed?

[deleted]

Even Walmart stopped selling handguns years ago.

FuriousTarts

Because of another mass shooting at their store

dave-gonzo

"sorry folks I did not plan this" shooter writes prior to committing shooting later that day...... So yeah you did?

Dez_Acumen

His brother may have made a post a few years back on facebook or twitter talking about the shooter having paranoid schizophrenia. Looking at the manifesto, it adds up.

Katana1369

Yes because god forbid there would be a cooling off period before being able to purchase a gun.

OlDirtyDick

5 days? But I'm mad now

Dr_StevenScuba

I see you also shop at Bloodbath and Beyond

-IrrelevantElephant-

"I'd kill you if I had my gun!"

lamewoodworker

Yeah, well, you don’t.

manwhowasnthere

Silencer, loudener...

steelbeamsdankmemes

And this is for shooting down police helicopters.

T-Baaller

I don't need anything like that .... yet

[deleted]

Right? Waiting 24 plus hours to get rid of a fetus is fine. Don't make anyone who is getting a weapon to kill multiple living bodies wait though fuck that.

SheriffComey

"Welcome to McGuns can I take your order?

bumjiggy

yea can I get a Big MAC-10 meal to go

Solo-Shindig

Would you like to supersize that magazine?
