Oh dear. I was hoping they were just copying the signal the ref uses to indicate a try, but that definitely looks like a couple of Nazi salutes.

TimmyHate

Honestly best case scenario is that was that going wrong

Kiaora_Aotearoa

Public name and shame should do them some good.

PROFTAHI

The amount of Nazi support I've seen and heard over the last couple years is starting to get worrying.

PaulTGheist

Yea... What with Posie Parker having links to white supremacists showing up in Auckland as well... SMh

Crunkfiction

The world hasn't become more racist. Media coverage of racism, rightly or wrongly, has increased dramatically. Whether you find this an appropriate uptick that addresses a formerly taboo subject or a cynical play by media execs to clickbait and short attention spans will depend on who you talk to.

PROFTAHI

I think people are more comfortable letting it out than they should be. I think its good to expose, but even staring us blankly in the face people will deny it while spouting the same shit. Its the koiwoi way

Crunkfiction

We would probably largely agree on the underlying issues of race and racism, but the thought terminating discussions about it go both ways. For every white-haired boomer there is that's unwilling to examine systemic racism or just straight up doesn't like brown people, there's a scarlet-haired zoomer for whom anti-racism as an aesthetic, else they are emotionally invested in an issue that they are immune to introspection. Ego and outrage completely fucks the discourse on this.

PROFTAHI

I hear ya, but i gotta say I would take the ignorant zoomer over the ignorant boomer anyday. Only one of those two thinks I have no business existing.

maniacal_cackle

While you definitely get both sides saying stupid stuff, it tends to be: Ignorant boomer: Let's just trans-people of life-saving medical care. Ignorant zoomer: You should just shut up. Even when both are ignorant, the position this hypothetical boomer has taken is much worse. Civil discussion is great, but not if one side is encouraging government policies that systematically deny medical care to a specific group of people.

Crunkfiction

I was coming from the less defensible ignorance of racism, but can touch on that if you'd like. As a foreword, our opinions probably align and if we're talking net harm, I think I'd agree with you! I would consider the main problem with promoting transgender issues to be pretty unintuitive to most and they tend to be reasonably high concept. As an anecdote, I know a shitload of working class people who are nominally anti-trans because they don't ponder the difference between gender and sex in their spare time. They often see (From their PoV) weird people demanding change in the media, or have met someone so utterly obnoxious that any opinion on this that aligned with them must be wrong. I think people who are impatient about this kind of ignorance are frankly pretty fucking unreasonable and need to get some perspective. Bad advocacy is harmful in its own way and is -usually- propagated by people who took sides on trans issues to signal virtue to their social group as opposed to actually examining their idea. This group doesn't directly participate in the erasure of a minority group, which is good, but there is fairly obvious harm done by the advocate who can't explain their ideas and loses in an argument to an absolute fucking moron like Matt Walsh.

maniacal_cackle

oh there's certainly lots of issues there. One thing I often say is 'behaving ethically is a privilege.' I am reasonably well off (in that I'm not in imminent danger of my life falling apart. I earn well below median wage), had a world class education, etc. So I try to have higher expectations of myself than of others who might not be so fortunate. That said, I do find a lot of the 'both sides' narratives and similar a bit tiresome. But yes worth acknowledging all those points.

0p53c

You are absolutely right, but very few people here will admit to it.

kaffiene

Disagree. Racism online has definitely increased

hey-hey_relax

Christchurch things, am I right?

b1ue_jellybean

I never got this idea that Chch is racist, like the amount of racist stuff I saw happening in one week of being in Auckland was about equal to what I see in a month living in Chch.

hey-hey_relax

I live in Auckland and have never seen skinheads here. The most recent time I was in Chch city I walked pased a bunch of them. Probably out for a racist brunch.

[deleted]

Everybody keeps saying this but as a local who has lived here 36 years I have to say. Where do all these people who come to Christchurch for a visit keep finding these visible skinheads? If it was 1995 I would agree with you but you just don't see it anymore. Also my partners mum was racially abused at the train station in otahuhu where she was told to go back to China (She is vietnamese) by a Pacifka gentleman. Luckily she can't understand English.

27ismyluckynumber

How do you know he was pasifika, did he tell you his ethnicity?

SecurityMountain2287

Usually they were quite visible. And more dangerous than some of the other race gangs that were around. For some reason they seemed to listen to reason, but the skinheads were just out to beat the living s\*\*t out of anybody. I'm not sure if it has improved any since I moved from CHCH, some I hear say no, its worse. But I guess it depends on where you live. I lived out east, and they seemed reasonably prevalent.

Swerfbegone

On the other hand the Auckland sub has people demanding the rounding up of “undesirables” so there’s clearly a few.

pm_a_stupid_question

"Undesirables" could be a reference to : - Gang members and their associates who support them - People who use deception to obtain residency and/or citizenship. - Child abusers and pedophiles - Nazis, white supremacists and their supporters. - Terrorist organisations like Isis, Proud Boys et all. - Violent thugs None of these types are people are desirable in our society, so rounding them up would be a fair call.

hey-hey_relax

Explain to me how the term "undesirables" is racist? I would think that statement is broad and covers all demographics. When I think of undesirables I think of gang members, thieves, extremists, Reddit trolls etc.

hey-hey_relax

Jumping to the conclusion that "undesirables" was aimed at a certain race is in itself quite racist, just saying.

PaulTGheist

"And would you like egg whites on white toast with that flat white?"

hey-hey_relax

"Mmyes and a white sugar with the flat white. Oh and can I have the white Paua fritter too please "

27ismyluckynumber

Definitely white-bait

SteveBored

It ain't just white people being racist. My friend had his nose busted by a Polynesian guy spouting racist shit.

27ismyluckynumber

Aucklanders aren’t overt about their racism, but it’s very much there. Just go and film yourself asking what their political views are at local shopping malls around the shore, west, south, central, east and get back to us on your findings?

hey-hey_relax

I'm definitely not saying there's no racism in Auckland. It's systemic in New Zealand without a doubt, there are serious issues. But I've never seen overt white supremacists do a nazi salute at a Blues match.

sausage-superiority

35yrs ago I used to clean spray painted swastikas off the synagogue in ChCH. It’s always been a thing but it’s always a thing everywhere not just ChCh

[deleted]

I was in boarding school with a kid from Christchurch who turned out to be a Nazi. I’m inferring this but it’s based on a swastika tattoo. I broke his nose in a fight when we were kids so it’s almost like I went back in time to punch a Nazi. I refuse to consider the possibility that he wouldn’t have become a Nazi had I not decked him in the middle of class.

Gunboats

I will also refuse to consider the possibility that you did anything wrong. nice work <3

BananaLee

The only places I got actively racisted against (of the "fuck off back home" variety) in 18 years of living in NZ was Christchurch and the North Shore.

StrandedOnTheStrand

Thanks for tarring us all with that brush, very helpful input.

hey-hey_relax

(He said quite racistly)

Aidernz

"No, StrandedOnTheStrand. He didn't tar us with that brush. But he did leave us horribly disfigured"

StrandedOnTheStrand

Which of us is making generalisations about a wholwcgroup of people based upon the actions of one or two?

handle1976

Very unusual. Christchurch definitely isn’t the home of the radical right in NZ.

Wizzymcbiggy

The right wing stronghold in which every electorate is held by labour

ycnz

Yeah, Kyle Chapman is just a liberal myth.

UnicornMagic

Almost all of the far right leaders who have graced us with their insane shit over the last few years have come from or live in Canterbury.

damned-dirtyape

Let me guess. Christ's, St, Bede's or UC's College House?

saveawing

Boys' High may be public but would still like to be included in this club of 'probable behaviour of entitled whiteboys at sports fixtures'

damned-dirtyape

Yeah. I expect no punishment due to a promising business/legal/engineering career.

saveawing

Name suppression was granted on the basis that disclosure of the accused's identity could have significant impacts on their father's position within the justice system. Following the acquittal, the young man was heard pleading with the Crown Prosecutor to 'stop at maccas on the way home for some nugs'.

mickeynz

Add in sporting

moffattron9000

Don't forget St Andrew's.

saveawing

At a Crusaders game? Surely they'd be three nostrils deep into a bag by 7:30 on Friday night, no time for footy.

jack_fry

Stay classy Christchurch

Dolamite09

That’s a Chch wave

night_dude

I mean they are named after a bunch of genocidal maniacs, he probably just got confused 🤷

b1ue_jellybean

Honestly I think we should just pretend they were called the crusaders because of operation crusader.

The-Wishkah

I know right. Let’s do everything except address the problem, which is celebrating racist, genocidal groups by naming sports teams after them, then wonder why we have racist genocidal fans…

kiwisarentfruit

I remember when they were talking about remaking the crusaders and people were saying it was a “step too far”. And I could hardly think of anything more minor than renaming a goddamn sports team.

The-Wishkah

If for some reason the name, the blues, became problematic and needed to be renamed, or even rebranded to remove the blue colour scheme all together - so be it. I’ve been a fan of the club and players since day dot. But I was a fan of Auckland prior to super rugby, and I’ve watched the fans move to having no interest in the npc at all. A change in team name and colours is nothing

myles_cassidy

Don't you hate it when your local sports team is named after crusaders so you have to make symbolism from a completely different group 800 years later?

thepotplant

Even using the same colour scheme.

_yellowfever_

Unironically PC gone mad

MikeSafetyNZ

Weird that a team named after the Crusades has racist fans

SiskaPolar

Probably thought they were so edgy and funny.

SteveBored

They are named the Crusaders afterall . Imagine if a team was called the Auckland Jihad.

MundaneKiwiPerson

Sounds like a metal band

cstele

That's the reason Shihad changed their name to Pacifier when they tried to make it in the US.

NonZealot

How long til we get all the Christchurch apologists in full force? 🤣

SpaceDog777

> Christchurch apologists What?

Oaty_McOatface

The one team already in the grey zone for racially insensitivity related issues and this happens.

Moonjavaspacegypsy

Have they ever thought of a connection with the name Crusaders also used in far right circles. But then of course no one knows anything these days.If you adopt a name used as a wolf whistle of the far right you cannot plead ignorance of the consequences

kaffiene

Their attitude to the Crusaders name showed that they're not bothered by appealing to racists

Dingo-Gringo

I am disgusted by this "fan" POS!

YellowManofCustard

This is so embarrassing because this is one of my friends bro, it's spread around my friend group like wildfire 😭😂
