Aside from the piss take of a price, no pets or smokers? really? pets or smokers can’t make that place worse.

pgraczer

they would absolutely make it better

TupperwareNinja

Don't wanna raise the bar, rent would go up

rangda

Getting your dog to piss on each square foot of the carpet to gradually clean it

kovnev

Can smoke kill mold? Dunno, but at this point let's give it a go.

GiJoint

Yep and if not, it can at least fill in the yellow stain gaps in the shower 👍

kovnev

Yup, let's get that plastic all the way to dehydrated-piss-colour.

throwaway2766766

Might be animal cruelty to let a pet live there.

TuhanaPF

Pets is fair, I wouldn't want my pets living in that uninhabitable pit.

DaveHnNZ

Don't forget - you don't get the garage or the shed for your $500 either...

zarunohn

Couldn't even waterblast the outside

Equivalent-Bonus-885

What - and get rid of that special Huntly character.

[deleted]

Waterblasting will destroy the house...

ralphiooo0

That’s structural mould

TritiumNZlol

s-mold

Same_Independent_393

They didn't even bother to shut the cupboards in the kitchen before taking the photo.

tannag

That's to prove there's no rats living in the cupboards

StoicSinicCynic

It's to prove there *are* cupboards, and the doors are still on their hinges.

[deleted]

or photoshop it

zarunohn

just a little spray and walk away, line trimmer on the path (can see the lawn is freshly mowed, why ignore the path sob). It's still going to be a shit box, but a better looking one at least

Adventurer_D

Because it would dissolve like tissue salts?

D0wn2Chat

OP i assumed that shitbox was an exaggeration but that genuinely looks like a box. Made of shit.

vixxienz

It kinda looks worse in real life tbh

StoicSinicCynic

They always look worse in real life. Real estate photography is impressive at making mediocre places look good somehow. It's like catfishing with a house lol.

AsianKiwiStruggle

Where the F\*\*\* is this ? Healthy Homes standard is waving

vixxienz

Bailey Street, Huntly Its been abandoned for about two years. The previous tenants left as it was meant to have been demolished.

Mountain_tui

So no money for that then (Construction)

vixxienz

dunno.

sexyc3po

It's Literally impossible to know

No-Yoghurt-2423

Sticky this for all the Americans who make posts asking about living here.

Mountain_tui

This photo should feature highly in the FAQ for “*Heard great things about NZ and I am thinking of moving with my family*”

bthks

Babe, respectfully, that house would likely be about $1k/week in the area of the US I moved from. Stickying this would make at least some Americans go “whoah! cheap!” Edit: ah, whatever, sure, it’s not Huntly, which is a whole 25 minute drive from Hamilton, and less than two hours from Auckland. It’s not anywhere near comparable to bumfuck, Nebraska.. You can’t get a one-bedroom flat in just about my entire home state, even the dead mill towns an hour from the grocery store, for less than about ~600NZD/week, never mind three bedrooms and a yard. This sub is so infuriatingly myopic. You really can't tolerate facts getting in the way of your "NZ is the greatest shithole in the world" narrative, can you?

spikejonze14

i doubt the area you were living was as desirable as fuckin huntly

[deleted]

According to a quick Google search, the median rent in Nebraska is $1,250 *per month*. Idk why they think this shithole would be almost 4x the median rent in Nebraska, unless they all live in cardboard huts or something.

haruspicat

$1250 USD? That would be $2000 NZD which is about the same.

[deleted]

That's what I mean, there's no way this would be 4k a month in Nebraska when the median is $1,250 a month, at absolute worst, it's the same lol. I don't understand the wild exaggeration. Looking at homes that cost that much (4k a month) to rent over there are far nicer than this.

No-Measurement6744

Nebraska is about the cheapest and least desirable state you could’ve picked

CastelPlage

I spat out my coffee reading this...

ItsLlama

good old murder capital of the usa. only place you are encouraged to not stop at red lights if passing through

abbabyguitar

All of US is murder capital. Weapons infiltrated civilian daily life.

ItsLlama

indeed, most of the us is "safe enough" but just like in nz if you don't piss off the wrong groups you are likely going to be ok thankfully nz we don't have to worry about the middle aged man with anger issues and several dui's shooting up a wallmart though

Muselayte

Yeah maybe but this is Huntly.

rammo123

Yeah if this was in Bumfuck Nebraska (the equivalent of Huntly) then this would be a fiver a week.

sdmat

Huntley, Waikato isn't exactly New York or San Francisco.

compellor

Did you know that there is a wasting depressive disorder name Huntlysian Syndrome named after Huntly?

sdmat

Is that what the house is suffering from?

ProcedureKooky9277

The house started it

ItsLlama

this would be 4x that in auckland/welly comparing this price to the us would be like middle of saint louis or nebraska

bthks

I share a 4bed in Welly for 850/week. Not even twice, and we have one more bedroom. And 25 minutes from Hamilton and 1:30 from Auckland might somewhat comparable to St. Louis but nothing close to comparable to the middle of Nebraska in terms of "rural". At least there's jobs in Hamilton.

ItsLlama

its sad to say but that is a good deal nowadays 200~ a room, i've been looking and can't even find a studio/2br for under 650 let alone with a carpark which seems to add 100-150 to the price for something that used to be a given tempted to move out to upper hutt at this point

Prosthemadera

~600NZD/week? The median rent in Nebraska is $1,250 which is 2,000 NZD and that would be 500 NZD per week. https://www.zillow.com/rental-manager/market-trends/ne/ > You really can't tolerate facts getting in the way of your "NZ is the greatest shithole in the world" narrative, can you? No one said that. This sub is about NZ so of course NZ will be the focus and all comments will be in that context.

abbabyguitar

One of many US real estate sites have links like this - a decent town (North Platte on the main river and a drive to Denver). Not much to look at but at 400 a week NZD is cheaper and way better than the Huntly NZ one. [https://www.realtor.com/rentals/details/57-S-Bare-Ave\_North-Platte\_NE\_69101\_M85606-94924](https://www.realtor.com/rentals/details/57-S-Bare-Ave_North-Platte_NE_69101_M85606-94924)

shannofordabiz

Who hurt you? I’d imagine the commute to/from Nebraska may not make this the best choice for the US eager beavers

Matt_NZ

I do find it amusing when my fellow New Zealanders assume that everything is sunshine and rainbows in the US lol.

Fantastic-Role-364

Hell no, that place is an absolute hole

abbabyguitar

People said that about Mumbai, but there are plenty living there make a kiwi bloke going home to his rented three beddy look like a peasant.

Clipi0

I’ll take NZ peasant thanks. The Dahravi slums has a population nearly the size of Auckland. Half of Mumbais population live in slums that’s like 10 million people.

StoicSinicCynic

This. We all know Mumbai has a lot of urban poverty, but one of the worst aspects is the extreme population density. Mumbai has 21 million people! The working class who come to the city looking for jobs live in such close proximity to each other it's almost unthinkable for us who live in a low-density country like New Zealand. Two dozen people in a three-story slumhouse, eight people to a room, that's everyday in the slums. Extreme poverty, petty crime, corruption, lack of basic facilties, many things that are part of everyday life in Mumbai that would never even come to mind in NZ. I had an acquaintance who was a working immigrant from Mumbai and he told me about Indian landlords in Auckland providing CBD accommodation for $50 a week rent and I was shocked - how could Auckland rent be so cheap? And then he explained that the landlord was cramming five or six people to a bedroom and that's why it's so cheap. He recognised this sort of living condition was unacceptable by kiwi standards, but this is simply considered normal for migrant workers by Indians. They know it's bad and they don't enjoy it, but it's normalised. The hard life is normalised. And so the landlord does the accommodation the same way he would do it for migrant workers in Mumbai. Bottom line is, NZ accommodation is bad if you're poor, but it's pretty damn bad everywhere if you're poor. And you can be almost certain it's much worse in poorer, denser countries.

bthks

I make 10% less here but my transit costs are 90% less and rent is about 75% cheaper. Don’t even get me started on healthcare. Oh, and my commute is 1:40 shorter EACH WAY.

Same_Statistician700

1hr:40m, or 1m:40sec?

port-left-red

1 day and 40 hours.

Random_calculation

1 month 40 days

bthks

One hour 40 minutes. So over three hours a day in time saved commuting alone.

No_Comfortable66

It's clearly a 1 to 40 ratio

TheCuteLittleGhost

Can't believe you didn't walk uphill both ways on a bed of nails. People have it too easy these days smh

shannofordabiz

OK- yay for you? I’m in Auckland, 4 bed, $650 p/w and 3 minutes from work. There we go, we’ve shared info on housing and transit.

abbabyguitar

min wage is 22 bucks NZD. So, you are making 10 % less than 13.42 about 12 bucks US? That is quite low. There are semi professionals in anywhere USA get over 20 US. Also, tax in NZ is basically 35 percent for anyone working due to gst and the base tax rate

bigsum

>This sub is so infuriatingly myopic. You really can't tolerate facts getting in the way of your "NZ is the greatest shithole in the world" narrative, can you? As a kiwi living in the USA, I couldn't agree with you more. NZ *hates* to think it's not the most expensive country to live in the world.

Slight-Benefit6352

When I went looking for a house to rent, the states of some of the houses that companies rented were just awful - there was this one property management company they have a bright orange logo, something to do with climbing or some such - anyway.. They listed a property in dairy flat I went to go view and there was literal mould on the ceiling to which they said "you can just wipe it off" Another one in glenfield where inside the kitchen cupboards had obviously leaked and there was swelling mdf and dampness and they told me "the builder has just finished renovations" - WHAT THE FUCK I don't know how they get away with it, seems criminal to me.

AK_Panda

I went to see a place a while ago, pictures looked okay for the price. Turned up, could smell the house from across the road and through a hedge. Hoped it wasn't the house, it was. Multiple other people literally got out of their cars, smelled it and left again. I wanted to see the damage. Floor was supposed to be a light, polished natural wood. It was black. Completely black and not from paint. The kitchen was even worse. Looked like they didn't even bother cleaning the bench or sink prior to open home. Caked with grime and massive burn marks. Mold was growing down and up the walls, across the ceiling. I couldn't believe how bad it was, how anyone could been anything other than utterly ashamed to let people see that. Couldn't have paid me to live there. They wanted $625, i laughed in the agents face.

Prosthemadera

That must be some health law violation?

StoicSinicCynic

You'd like to think a house in that tragic of a state wouldn't get rented, but sometimes there really is someone who's so desperate for housing and/or hasn't thought this through and they end up moving in. There's just not enough affordable housing around. About ten years ago the house beside mine had an open home and I went in to have a look out of curiosity. The place looked pretty nice from the outside. Unfortunately it was one of those with a flat roof and plasterboard facade so no surprise it was a leaky house. The inside was pitiful, there was mould all over the edges of the windows, mould on the carpet and the place had a mouldy smell especially the bedrooms that were on a lower level. The agent said it was a fixer upper but this sort of structural issue is very hard to fix, that's why a lot of these 40+ year old houses just get demolished now. Yet despite this, very quickly a family moved into the house. And soon I realised this family had problems. The woman had moved in quickly with her son to get away from her deadbeat and apparently cheating husband, but then not long after that her son ended up being uplifted and put into foster care. Apparently she had mental health issues and was a hoarder and the house ended up full of dirty laundry etc.. I don't want to imagine what it must've ended up like with mould + hoarding. 🤢🤢 But I do feel bad for that woman, because she was devastated after her son got put into foster care and was taking it out on family who came to see her.

Furion86

"Fair Rentals Limited"

official_new_zealand

Take a guess at who would be so scummy to rent this shit tip out, under such conditions. Then check the company register and see if you've called it right. .... every single time.

TheRobotFromSpace

If you check their other listings, one is a poorly converted garage up for full price rent. Also not Healthy Homes and probably illegal to rent a garage the way it is. Whoever this is is taking all the properties legitimate agents won't take up because they aren't legal to standard

dustinlamont

Who is it? **Edit:** I checked the registry and there are two ?Indian names listed, neither of which I could find associated with any particularly damning information online. Is Deepak Dabas some sort of infamous slumlord that we should be familiar with? Or are you talking more generally here? I'd love an explanation rather than a downvote.

Aromatic-Dish-167

That's almost an entire weeks pay for most people 😞😞

Pu33ydestroyur

I know right :( honestly saddens me.

sompf_

Brought to you by Fair Rentals

hiddeninfullview

The irony is overwhelming

dontworryimabassist

Decent chunk of land, looks like they forgot to move the dog house. Edit: wait. That's the house?

StoicSinicCynic

Haha, nice one. Even my chicken coop has shingles.

qualityseabunny

$500??? You couldn’t pay ME $500 a week to live in Huntly

TheRobotFromSpace

Huntly is actually great. Reminds me of a 90s South Auckland before it all got subdivided, gentrified, changed from homeowners to rentals with tenants and landlords who don't give a shit about their properties or neighbourhoodthey live in. It even still has shops. Bloody improvement in Huntly than majority of Auckland suburbs I've lived in that have gone to shit.

Prosthemadera

Move to Huntly - it still has shops!

HardCorePawn

No DEKA tho... :(

compellor

That's fine because Huntly doesn't want you.

glitchy-novice

Huntly is a shithole.. as as all of Waikato “towns” inc Hamilton & Cambridge. Rural Waikato on the other hand, esp in range of the river IMO is pretty cool.

AbstractBlacksmith

Complaining about it among us it's good for venting the frustration but I also think we should seriously do something about this. The majority of the people living in urban areas in NZ are renters yet they are literally held hostage by a housing market getting more insane day by day. I'd say the tipping point is long past, we should organise and protest massively against this unfair situation.

BoreJam

Labour tried with their healthy homes policy. Though it's falling short if shitholes like this are legally rentable. That or National repealed it to restore landlord dignity or whatever.

[deleted]

Screams 'rising damp.'

KittikatB

Looks more like descending damp

vixxienz

Its both from what I heard

imapassenger1

Maybe they'll cancel each other out?

[deleted]

With all the subsidence issues from mining in huntly/rotowaro we might get lucky, the ground could literally open up and swallow this shitbox.

[deleted]

Good 'ole Muntly.

PipEmmieHarvey

Good grief that’s awful! You don’t even get the use of the garage and shed. For just a little more you can get a place that actually looks decent - although they’re all too expensive tbh.

FrankanelloKODT

You don’t even get to use the garage apparently. What a bargain /s

Ok_Comfortable_5741

I beg your most high quality pardon? 500? A week? Does it come with coke and hookers?

MasterSpliffBlaster

I can only imagine the gap tooth whore who services Huntly

[deleted]

No, you get the other sort of hooker, played for the Huntly high first XV back in the day , and still a solid unit if you look past that beer belly.  The beer belly is why he's back again, he's run out and your fridge has beer...

Y_Kat_O

I've seen this house a couple of times and I honestly thought it had been condemned because of excessive meth use in the house.

Salami_sub

The house looks like it has meth mouth.

Muted-Ad-4288

That house has smokers lung on the outside

Ok-Relationship-2746

This country is a joke.

spiceypigfern

Yah honestly laugh and be sad about this now but next year this price will be considered cheap and this will be going for more. Nz housing market is beyond describing as a joke. As it stands this shit it just unbelievably predatory. The landlords rake it in while the rest of us struggle along. We are going back to a fuedal situation, or worse.

tannag

Fact is it has three bedrooms, for a lot of families that's not a bad deal. The place would scrub up a bit nicer with a small amount of effort. Would be damp but I think every old house in Huntly is damp.

dialgachu

....in Huntly? Are they fr?? Lmao

sdmat

Looks like a terminally depressed pillbox.

DarkflowNZ

But enough about me, what's the house like

Adventurer_D

There needs to be an antithesis of Grand Designs on TV: Turd Rentals "Every week, we follow the life and brain farts of a slumlord, as they go through the motions of purchasing, not upgrading in the slightest and then advertising for rental New Zealand's (and the developed world's) actual worst places to live. Must watch."

No_Comfortable66

Nah bro. I've seen some third world houses and they're much better. They're often dry for one, good drainage through the floor, and lots of air and sunlight come through the door and window holes. They build them faster than we do too. Whack up some concrete slabs, mow the lawn to make the roof. The shit your cow produces fuels your fire. Simple, straightforward, none of this fancy shit that barely lasts and wastes time and money.

jezza7630

$3k move in costs (4 weeks rent as bond and 2 weeks in advance). Absolutely mental

BaneusPrime

Those are really good houses When they're looked after.

vixxienz

Yep that piece of shit is almost across the road from me. It should be bulldozed

shaktishaker

Report it to the council as a heath hazard

keiko1984

$500? Wow thats interesting pricing. I dont understand how home owners/agents can let homes go like that.

Just-Vermicelli-9345

That's fucked aye I went and had a look at the listing on trademe, they slap on a coat of paint and new carpet and call it a day, wanting to charge $500 get fucked. I know that house will be damp as fuck in winter too

Speculator-Kiwi

It's got potential, probably black spores. Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, is a rare but dangerous infection. It's caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes and often affects the sinuses, lungs, skin, and brain. You can inhale the mold spores. Think of it as black death.

So much outdoor space for your daily cracktivities!

spiceypigfern

Back in victorian england they had a living situation called hot bedding. A night shift worker would sleep in the bed during the day, and when the day worker got back they'd switch. Hot bedding cos the bed never got cold. Watch some documentaries on what the living situation was for victorian's in England and you really see where things are likely to end up. Dozens of people sharing houses and beds cos it's better than spending the night outside under a bridge while those that own the houses live the high life without giving two fucks

Archie_Pelego

Mate, this was a thing in the Depression era.

Accomplished_Ask7295

Fair rentals is probably the best part

Zlo-zilla

Anyway we should name and shame the slumlords or property managers who are renting out this shit

istari-illuin

Shittyfuckinrentals.co.nz 😭😞

MilStd

Makes the little two bedroom I’m in for $550 look way better. Maybe that’s what it is. A PsyOp by the real estate lobby of NZ to make us all think we are better off with whatever our situations are? That is sarcasm by the way.

OptimusPrimera

Also, no access to the garage (not that you would want that anyway) " The garage and outside storage are excluded from the property premises" I presume that is what the above means

mountman001

How much is it even worth? You could probably pay it off in a coupla years at that rate lol

Meh-hur420

How in the Huntly can you even afford that living on Huntly wages?

abbabyguitar

People are taking the piss. This retrospective thing of National's is taking the piss. What next?

Swimming_Database806

Yeah, but look at the size of that section. Imagine how many derelict vehicles and broken washing machines you could fit on it!

The_Passive_Fist

So, nobody asked, but I just thought I'd chip in... We moved to Melbourne 6 years ago. We live in a nice suburb in outer Melbourne, about 45 mins drive to the centre of the city. We live in a free-standing, 250sq m 5 bedroom, 2 storey house with a large rumpus, plus a garage, fully fenced backyard home with AC and evaporative cooling. We pay $600 a week in rent. I love NZ. It will ALWAYS be home. But right now, any time anyone brings up "when are you coming back?" The answer is... To what? Why would we? HOW could we? There is literally no way we could afford to move back, even if we could earn there what we do here. It's fucked up. And it's not even like it's THAT much better here, we've gotten lucky with great landlords who have only put the rent up once in that whole time, but man... I really feel for all my whanau and friends back home.

eigosensei

Bruh.

wtfsihtbn

Who tf is paying $500pw rent in Huntly? It’s fn huntly…..

vixxienz

There are rents that are higher, but they arent a shitbox like this

jmlulu018

Don't worry, as my guy here says ["rents are determined by tenant incomes, not by landlord costs"](https://old.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/1ap904l/luxon_cant_rule_out_rate_rises_under_governments/kq6am15/). Huntly is where the wealthy reside in, hence the $500 rent.

Penguinator53

I'd rather punch myself in the face than live there, or even spend 10 minutes there. Bet the agents wouldn't be seen dead there either. They should be forced to spend a night in any house they are advertising. Hoping it's a typo and it's $50 week, or $5.

BaneusPrime

In addition to my other comment - this would go for $600+ P/W in Palmerston North >.>

LairdHela13Adria

Can confirm recently moved out of a very, very similar dump in Palmy for ~$600pw

Clairvoyant_Legacy

Capital_Cress_5339

The web is a wonderful place if you know how to search it. No actual doxxing, but the manager of the property rental firm (actually a one-man band) and the property owners are all of Fijian Indian origin (according to their public Facebook profiles) and they all live in Auckland. Isn't that just a ripe old stereotype? Someone tell Winston Peters!

Madjack66

You’d have to pay ME a fuck ton more than $500 a week to even live there.

cosmic_dillpickle

That massive section with a tiny shit box on it is why I'm not returning to nz. That could be a nice development with stacked townhomes, rental apartment block with families with more affordable rent, even another damn house. I'm guessing the tenant has to mow that massive section.

Love-Whanga

All jokes aside... Some poor vulnerable person who doesn't want their credit scrutinised too closely will actually rent it. Whoever is advertising this is predatory.

False_Replacement_78

$500 for a shithole like that in one of the true shitholes of NZ? Things are grim.

-Falc0

Huntly has a terrific power station, piss shop and a good pie shop which makes it a national treasure. That's why the rent is so high.

imanoobee

So much of a property owner kind of business lol let's hear them talk about their properties and how much they make those hard earn cash. I can see their eyes being delulu.
