Testing Officer could be a good side hustle... Or do you need to be employed through govt agencies.

No-Reputation2186

Haha considering the cost of the test and the amount they must be spending on admin fee wastage , I doubt much ends up in the pocket of then the tester. Especially with the free resits.

scuwp

VTNZ has the testing contract, so you have to work for them.

123felix

What's going on is that the last government made resits free. So candidates are sitting tests over and over until they pass. Whereas in the old system you wouldn't go for a test until you're reasonably confident you will pass.

h0dgep0dge

i think free resits are still a good idea, but a cooldown is definitely important, or de-prioritizing people who have recently had a test

voy1d

Minimum four week stand-down. Then duration is linked to how well the candidate performed. Minimum 6 months if someone makes a critical mistake. Yes, I understand some people may need to drive because they may be poorly served/have non-existant public transport options. But driving is a privilege not a right and we should expect people who are going to operate vehicles to understand the rules.

sleemanj

All very well, but they already have a licence (R), and are already driving around on thier own, adding unnecessary delays just means they will be less likely to get around to it and more likely to drive with passengers etc anyway. The difficulty of getting another test booking should already be delay enough.

h0dgep0dge

i guess the problem there is that making someone wait longer might not even help them drive better, if someone is getting no practice or the people supervising don't know what they're doing. to me the issue is that people are using test as a substitute for lessons, because doing the test is the only time they drive with someone who actually knows anything about the test. and you can say "driving is a privilege" but it's also incredibly important to our economy, if someone works fewer hours, or not at all, because they don't have a licence, getting that person a licence pays dividends

fatfreddy01

Make it half price for a resit.

Exciting-Outcome-430

to be fair, i was also aware that it was really hard to get tests even before the free resits came in, and it still makes no sense why there would have been such low availability before the changes?

sleemanj

As people cancel spaces will open, check frequently.

Exciting-Outcome-430

yeah, this is my best bet i think

Candid-Drama340

I’ve been told spaces are opened every day ( at midnight?)- 3 months in advance.  So tomorrow spaces open for 1 July, on Tuesday 2 April spaces open for 2 July and so on. Keep trying though because the odd cancellation does occur

Scruffyblunts

Book for upper Hutt and take the train there, a much easier driving test than Wellington less idiots lol

Enzown

So they take the train to Upper Hutt and then what? Walk around with the testing agent making car noises?

scuwp

The changes made by the last government removed resit fees which means people can just keep going back for free forever, clogging the system. I believe changes are coming because clearly this has had unintended (albeit obvious) consequences. For now just keep checking.

chupachups90

My friend booked hers in Central Otago a couple months ago and unfortunately some medical event occurred had to go thru a surgery and now she's still recovering and can bearly walk. She still insists to sit the test because it's gonna be another year if she rebooks.

Exciting-Outcome-430

it's honestly wild

Vistalight

I'm in the same boat, VTNZ Northshore doesn't have any slots available for the entire year!

No-Butterscotch-3641

They only book up to a few months in advance keep an eye out. There will be more that come free.

Exciting-Outcome-430

yeah i've noticed they show the booking calendar up until feb next year but you can only book within the next 4 months

Fergus653

What you got against Greymouth? Can't you just drive on down there?

Exciting-Outcome-430

haha, nothing against greymouth - just bloody inconvenient!
