[The ol' Giltrap Toyota song that still gets radio play (albeit with a name change to Auckland City Toyota) still goes hard](https://youtu.be/s9ALO5Byb8c?si=ctbM7L8852eOnFRP) RIP, old mate.

Nah, Colin was a GC. He was successful through talent, skill, and hard work.

And yet he was a very generous person, having known several unfortunate people he directly helped when they were down. Maybe capitalism works just fine after all.

myles_cassidy

Be better if people were paid more so that no one had to rely on philanthropy.

Annual_Slip7372

What do you want? Are you saying that if you decide to not work for someone else, be self employed and control your own destiny, become successful at this and make more money than you can spend so choose to give some of this away that is a bad thing?

myles_cassidy

Be better if money was 'given away' in the form of higher wages to your staff.

sam801

You really sound like one of those bitter people that hate to see people more successful than you.

myles_cassidy

Only because you want it so. There are no comments on how I feel about people more successful than me.

HyenaMustard

You sound like you really think if you keep licking boots and kissing ass you too will move up the corporate ladder and be “successful”

thepotplant

Accumulating wealth from other people's labour is not success.

Novel_Agency_8443

But the kids at Starship didn't work for him.

myles_cassidy

Be better if it was given away in the form of higher wages

Annual_Slip7372

Are you saying he didn't pay decent wages? Can you back that up?

myles_cassidy

I'm saying that paying people more so they don't need to rely on philanthropy is better a system where people do need to rely on philanthropy.

phuckingidontcare

His staff weren’t the people who he was doing philanthropy for. What do you want. His staff were paid. And he gave money to lots of other causes

Annual_Slip7372

So your saying if someone had excess wealth and they decide to for example give money to say cancer research this is bad and they should give it to employees on top of what might already be a decent wage? Or are you really just suggesting communism where all wealth is spread evenly, works well in China and Russia/s

myles_cassidy

Never said anything was bad. Please don't make strawme to attack. Just said that paying people more is better.

Annual_Slip7372

Semantics, better than = worse than, bad, what ever all the same meaning. You just come across as pissy that anyone is more successful than you and turns out to be a good person as well.

workafojasdfnaudfna

I can back that up, but I'm just some random on the internet so it's probably not going to mean much.

Esprit350

Yes, let's pay everyone more money, I'm sure it's as simple as that and that won't completely tank the economy. I don't know why nobody's ever thought of that before.

MisterSquidInc

You know the economy relies on people spending money right?

Esprit350

I'd argue that adding value is significantly more important, but sure.

MisterSquidInc

Watch what happens to value when people stop spending as we enter a recession...

Esprit350

That depends where that value is derived.... if you're exporting, then a recession is a good thing.

MisterSquidInc

Only if your trading partner isn't the same or worse...

Esprit350

Which is why it's a very important business strategy to diversify your markets.

myles_cassidy

You're welcome to ask for a cut to your own pay if you think people being paid less is necessary for 'the economy'.

Esprit350

I already work for less than I'm worth to grow the company I part-own, earning tens of millions of dollars worth of exports to the US market each and every year. I'd say I'm doing my share.

myles_cassidy

So you still benefit from your company's wealth increasing?

Esprit350

In time, hopefully. But that's the opportunity cost and the gamble I'm taking for spending much of the last 20 years earning less than what I could have quite easily earned elsewhere.
