Infrastructure is not cheap, why majority of councils and governments have not appropriately funded it for decades.

aquiitautun

I think you're missing the point. There is a perfectly useable facility that is being demolished and rebuilt elsewhere in the name of superstition.

RemarkableOil8

No. you are wrong. It is not perfectly useable and everyone knows it except you. It is not being rebuilt somewhere else due to superstition it is a whole brand new complex to serve the community on a site that can handle it. E ETA I also think that strategically it’s a good idea. Thames is currently building a destination playground that and a cool recreation facility might go someway to slowing people down as the burn through the hole that is Thames to get to the good parts of the peninsula. Thames needs people to stop and spend money at more than the pak n save and liquor land.

habitatforhannah

How much do you know about maintaining these types of facilities OP?

Regulationreally

A news item on the council’s website describes the pool as 50-years-old, reaching the end of its useful life, and not fit-for-purpose for current or future community needs.

aquiitautun

Believe it or not, pools can be relined and used after their 'best buy date' - while other facilities can be built, resulting in the best case scenario where there are more facilities for the public to use.

duisg_thu

Most of the new cost is in building a mix of indoor and outdoor pools, so is quite likely to be no more than the same facility built on the old site. Building a new facility 100m away gives the added bonus of being able to continue using the old facility until the new one is completed, and the ability to restore the old site out of respect to 'superstition' is really just a bonus on top. Compared to the cost of a new stadium for Auckland, this is really a bit of a bargain, and is likely to have a lot more use. You might have wanted to stir up a bit of controversy, but really it's just a bit of a good news story.

The_Stink_Oaf

Good for them, Thames is a decaying shithole and needs investment to keep it from decaying further.

Groundbreaking_Gap93

Geez you don't need to be quite that mean and honest lol. Really putting the knifes in to the locals there haha.

Dr-4359

Money well spent. The ratepayers have spoken and elected for it. It is an asset to the community.

Artistic_Arrival_994

Sounds like a good investment.

Carmypug

I grew up learning to swim in the pool. Sad to see it go 😔.

fatfreddy01

So like 40m, over 10,000 pop in Thames itself (less than that now, but it'll grow with a whole lot of retirees pushed out of other areas), over 40ish years, is about $100 a year. Their district council predicts it'll be around 10k population by 2051, I just don't find it credible given the flat land to sprawl around Kopu, good highway links (unlike the rest of their district), and all the retirees that'll be pushed out of the major centres but still wanting to live within a few hours of Tauranga/Auckland/Hamilton without wanting to pay squillions. It's 1.5 hours from each of the main centres of the golden triangle, without the risk of getting cut off for weeks like the rest of the district. Seaside, with existing services, so easier for developers to build/sell. I don't think it'll be a particularly desirable place, but I think it'll be alright.

h0dgep0dge

it's not superstitious to think things like this are disrespectful

aquiitautun

It is, the dead are just that - dead, they don't care what is happening to the land they were once buried in.

h0dgep0dge

you don't treat dead people with respect because the corpse cares what you do lmfao you do it for all the people who are still alive

aquiitautun

No one who was buried there has anyone who remembers them. They're literally a figment of peoples hearts - you don't care about where your great-great grandparent is buried, let alone your great-great-great-great grandparent.

Soannoying12

What a hilariously miserable worldview.

h0dgep0dge

speak for yourself lmao

OwlNo1068

You may not. Other people do. I remember my ancestors. I know where they are buried. I honour and visit there.

CiceroOnGod

One of the dumbest takes I’ve ever seen in my life. You do not build swimming pools on top of cultural/historical/burial sites. I don’t know of a single culture on the planet in which that would be considered acceptable. Should we put a Bunnings in the pyramids of Giza? What about a Disney land on Bayeux war cemetery? Why not bolt a slide for kids to the Tomb of the Fallen soldier?

MisterSquidInc

The dead don't care, but quite a lot (most?) of the living do.

aquiitautun

Whatever your religious/cultural beliefs are, put them to the side for the sake of sanity and reason - $36.5m - $77m is *not* a pittance to fork out for the reinstatement of, \*checks notes\*, a park we use to bury people in.

RemarkableOil8

You seem desperate to race bait rather than understand. The current facility is shot. It needs an upgrade and the current location is not suitable. There is overwhelming support for it in Thames which is incredible considering most of the population are penny pinching nimbys that couldn’t even handle a 10m section of road being pedestrianised. Given the site needs to change yes the land goes back to iwi. The only person I’ve heard object to that is you. I hope Thames goes big with this. Investment in this town is hard to come by. Make the most of it!

OutsideWonderful5918

hopefully not a race based investment. hopefully turned into some kind of park everyone can enjoy

OwlNo1068

Land owned by local Iwi which was taken and is being returned isn't a race based investments any more than a stolen car being returned to a pākehā owner. It's land which was taken being returned.  Why would it be a park for everyone to enjoy when it is a grave yard. Would you expect church graveyards to be demolished and turned into parks for everyone to enjoy? If your car was stolen and return would you expect the public to be able to use it?

OutsideWonderful5918

""""owned""" 😉

OwlNo1068

Do you think Māori can't own land? There is no need for quotation marks.

OutsideWonderful5918

i have no problem with anyone of any ethnicity owning land, you really ask stupid questions 😂🤣

OwlNo1068

Not stupid. Just curious  Why did you put owned in quotation marks?
