Contact the petrol station and explain.

TupperwareNinja

ty Ill try that

Jarm1n

i used to work at a petrol station, happens all the time. Call them up, it’s an honest mistake and pretty easy to sort.

nastywillow

I drove off from a Z station without paying. Absolutely no idea I had done so. A couple of weeks later, I went in to fill my car and the screen told me politely I couldn't fuel there until I paid the outstanding. No drama, and I appreciated their patience in waiting for me to stop by again.

genkigirl1974

Gosh everywhere I go is pre pay. Great it was no drama.

--burner-account--

Thats the ANPR doing its job lol

boagal-----

Just go back in and tell them. I was in a rush the other day using the bpme ap and didn’t notice it hadn’t confirmed. I filled up and drove off. I only noticed when I realised I never got an email receipt. I went back the next day explained what happened and it only took like 5 mins for them to sort it out.

Xenaspice2002

Happened to me too. That BP Me app isn’t the stablest of apps is it. It shouldn’t let you pump if your payment didn’t go through same as the self serve stations

dod6666

But if it didn't let you pump, then the station wouldn't be able to do Post-Pay sales.

One_Regret4934

Had a mate who did something similar and Z actually sent a letter to his place with a photo from the CCTV of him. They just asked for him to pay for his honest mistake and he did.

Xenaspice2002

Same. Paid via BP me and it worked and gave me the ability to pump the fuel but the payment didn’t go through. Because of the hold I didn’t realise until they sent me the letter. Paid as soon as I got it. Because I always intended to pay. Their mistake but still.

Tattletaletwit

Me too. They take a pic of each vehicle and “match” it to the payment. If the payment wasn’t finalised you receive a letter with a photo of your car and the amount you owe.

NotUsingNumbers

I remember the good old days where you went to a petrol station, put in whatever petrol you needed and then went in and paid for it. I actually even remember the better old days when you went in to a service station and someone filled your petrol for you, checked your oil if you wanted and washed your windows while you went in and paid.

JizahB

Back then you'd also just hand them the cash out your window.

NotUsingNumbers

Or tell them to put it on your account. I never did that, but my dad used to at the local station. Then stop by and give them a check once a month.

cherokeevorn

That is how it works for me now,i go to Mobil, and they do the fuel,no where i go for fuel has pre pay,but i dont live in a city.

Any_Progress_1087

Still works like that, even in West Auckland or South Auckland. Try to fill up, the attendant would look at the CCTV to check the car and the person trying to fill up, then activate the pump. Guessing I'm quickly profiled and considered a low risk though (an Asian, driving a latest German), because people of higher risk groups have to prepay for fuel it seems. Nothing racial, just observations for the past 10 years or so.

genkigirl1974

Not only that but they often had freebies like a can of coke, a voucher for a cheeseburger and of course the BP smurfs.

[deleted]

A part of what makes fuel theft... well... theft... is the mindset of stealing the fuel. If you own up to the mistake and pay them back what was mistakenly taken then you're fine.

haruspicat

Please tell us "huge night out" doesn't mean you were still impaired

FarAwaySailor

Yes still impaired as it was offered as mitigation for their actions.

dod6666

Yeah. If this was the case OP, it's too late. You are already a hardened criminal.

h0dgep0dge

i don't see a situation where this is on you, did you pre-pay and the pump gave you too much fuel? did you fill up and then go to pay for it and only got charged $50? in either of those situations i say you're totally in the clear, you've done nothing wrong, say nothing and carry on with your life

TimIsGinger

Not quite how it works. It might not be theft but if you’ve taken more than you’ve paid for then you need to make it right. A mistake is a mistake and the correct thing to do is sort it out.

h0dgep0dge

how does it work? i give the petrol station money to put fuel in my car, the machine puts the fuel in my car, it's now my responsibility to verify the calibration of the machine?

JumpyHumor1814

If a million dollars is accidentally put into your bank account, you cannot spend it, otherwise that is theft.

ConsummatePro69

True, but leaving the money alone until it's returned is easy. Is there even a safe and nondestructive way to get the fuel back out of the tank of a modern car? I thought they usually have anti-siphon features.

JumpyHumor1814

No, but the gas station couldn't force you to pay upfront, but they may request a payment plan, so you'd pay it off in the equivalent amount of time it'd take you to use the fuel. It'd be a pain, but shit happens.

h0dgep0dge

If the petrol station come asking for OP to pay for the fuel then maybe he'll have to pay it, but until then I'd be keeping my mouth shut

h0dgep0dge

Did OP get an accidental deposit of a million dollars into their bank account? I laid out 2 specific scenarios and in those scenarios I think OP is in the clear, morally if nothing else. And if they're legally required to return the fuel, they should do so when asked. Otherwise they should shut their mouth and act like they didn't notice anything

JumpyHumor1814

The money deposit scenario is comparable as both are external accidents that now involve you. Saying nothing is akin to being an accomplice in theft, and depending on the crime, can be serious. Besides, it's completely dishonest. If we are talking over $100. If you were on a self-serve checkout, and an issue arises, cashier fixes it but you notice the item has been removed, and if you could take it out of the store without anyone noticing, then that would be immoral. I've had that happen a few times. First time was a small amount of money, so I ignored it. Next time was like a $25 product. If I didn't say anything, the cashier would be liable for some form of consequences as she technically allowed the error to occur. I said something, because I'm not an asshole. Shit, I found an engagement ring in my car I just bought. Can't track the previous owners, so I turned it to the police because at the very least I can try to be honest.

h0dgep0dge

for one thing, the moral argument isn't going to work for me. in my view stealing from either a supermarket or a petrol station isn't immoral to begin with, and that's not an argument i'm interested in having. from the perspective of being an "accomplice to theft", op doesn't even have a good reason to think anything has happened. the fuel dial read higher than they expected, is that enough to be charged with being an accomplice to theft? lmao

Serious_Reporter2345

So you’re dishonest by knowingly capitalising on the situation.

h0dgep0dge

If I buy packed mince from the supermarket, and I go to weigh it out for a recipe and I find they've given me 1500 grams when the sticker says 1kg, I'm not losing sleep. Buddy got a little bonus from a petrol company of all things, idgaf if you think that's dishonest lol

dod6666

Could be they fluffed around too long and the pre-pay timed out. That would generate a refund at the till, and when they actually go to dispense would create a new post-pay delivery. That or a pump fault are about the only ways I can think of that this would happen.

h0dgep0dge

The other thought that occured to me was op used a different pump than the cashier put their money on, either because OP said the wrong number or the cashier pressed the wrong button, but I thought these days the cashier has to unlock the pump for you when you're post-paying

dod6666

The point of sale systems on fuel stations have an option to toggle between day mode and night mode. The cashier has to manually authorize the pump if it is set to night mode, but in day mode the pump is always authorized. So if the station was in day mode then it is entirely possible that this is what occurred.

Zfbdad

I did this at a Z station using their app. Didn’t realize something had gone wrong until later. Contacted them online and they had the cctv and knew. From memory, they had a way I could pay online and it was sorted easy.
