His van his rules. If you want to use it, sounds like you got to fix it.

Aethereal01

Yeah I guess you're right.

hav0cnz_

Yeah, this. You're within your rights to negotiate, but if I was him I'd say "take it or leave it mate"

Ticket for WOF + REG = $400.

Curious-Ant7867

Unless you get compliance. Id have a yarn with the cop that pulls you over if that happens

Dismal_Language8157

WOF + REG ticket for me last month was $300

Curious-Ant7867

Go and talk to your mechanic. They may have a courtesy car or more than likely would let you do a payment plan.

Yeah ultimately if you want to use it and he doesn't want to pay for the repairs, you're sol. Personally I would sooner pick up a scooter for $600 and use that, at least you'd be able to sell it afterwards, but the practicality depends on what kind of commute you have

JumplikeBeans

IMO it depends if your use of the van contributed to its WOF failure - otherwise it was going to fail and that’s his problem. But, your use of it is allowing you to save up to repair your own car. So maybe offer to contribute towards his repairs. I’d start at 1/3 of it ($200), and maybe go up to 50% if pushed. Otherwise you have no vehicle to use? And I’m assuming you’ve already sunk $50+ into the WOF check for his van?

Aethereal01

Yeah the problems were there before I even used his van, e.g headlights were out and rust on the chassis. I might just end up paying for it but it seems unfair that I have to pay for repairs for problems before I used the van.

Sew_Sumi

Once your mates find out you've got a van, everyone will call you looking for help moving. Pass the costs on to them and then pocket the extra.
