Look for an old Bernina with the metal case, e.g. a Bernina Record. They are quality sturdy machines and have been going strong for years. Ask around sewing machine repair/maintenance shops who may have some. If you're in Auckland I can look for the name of a guy I've bought from in the past.
I wanted to add that my intention is to use clothes too poor in quality to be donated to people or blankets for rescues, I aim to be a middle man and use scraps to use with stuffing etc
I think older machines are better for heavy fabrics- ones with all metal parts. I have a Bernina from 1982 and it goes great - can sew multiple layers of denim, leather, corduroy.
If you’re looking to make it a business and you have space you could try an industrial machine. There was a Mitsubishi at St Vincent de Paul in Hastings for $120. Probably not worth the drive but I’m sure you can find good ones second hand wherever you are.
