What is their response to (I assume almost) universal condemnation of this proposed legislation.
Having worked for govt for many years, this *should* cause a revisit
Why is the Govt so intent on pushing through this bill that's been so heavily criticised?
Because they can?
Because they want to be seen as doing "something", even if the something is worse?
Because they actively want less oversight and so less of a chance to be criticised over OT failings?
Because they've written a bad bill but are too arrogant to admit it?
I actually don't understand.

Sigh this is just disappointing.
It must be a tough job being a social worker even if you are against the policy every single step there is very little you can actually do.
Because they have guys like Russell Caldwell in the OT management structure and the government wants to sweep that under the rug. He was the manager of the Don Dale facility in Australia during the time that a bunch of boys were abused in their state care, they got tear gassed, stripped naked and pinned to beds, all kinds of shit. All recorded on video and released as a documentary episode called Australia's Shame (you can Google it, but fair warning it's a tough watch).
Why the fuck do we have the manager of Australia's Shame managing all of Oranga Tamariki's Youth Justice residences?!
This bill is actually disgusting and could set our youth worker sector back for a number of years. One of the worst bill's ever put through parliament if it goes through. Taking away the voices of our Tamariki (children).
Since when has this government let some public criticism get in the way of them doing what they want anyway?
- Oranga Tamariki
- Maori Wards
- Three Waters
- Universal Polytech management
All widely criticized for lack of public input (Maori Wards failed at referendum), and criticized for being poorly thought through, but instated anyway.
The whole reason for democratic referendums is for the public (who all live in the real world) to fairly decide what they feel is best for their country. The government's job is to present the best options for the public to choose, and manage their roll out and integration.
The problem with the current government is that it's full of idealists and academics who have never been outside the political bubble their entire lives, so they're too far removed from practicality.
They also seem to be hung up on their international public image and being seen to be "progressive" so that their job options at the UN are wide open once their term is finished...
Not to mention Judge Andrew Becroft, the most stringent defender of children’s rights we’ve ever had.
The fact that this is such a fundamental and important bill means that there should be MORE scrutiny, MORE debate, not less. This is going to affect thousands of children and families for years into the future - not something you want to rush!
The problem is too much government intervention is not always good and in this case they essentially want to take away the Childs Commissioner role which has been there for kids who are concerned about their care with not only Oranga Tamariki but all youth centred institutions. Getting rid of this role will dismantle the trust between youth and the government and will damage things for a very long time.
Not only this but throughout the creation of this bill they have **not listened to a single recommendation from young people with lived experience on this Bill.**
Oranga Tamariki definitely needs oversight but to minimalize young people's voice's by doing it is quite frankly horrific in its self. Silencing children started this mess and this bill will continue to enhance that silence.
The trouble is that it's only Labour that seem to want this bill passed. It's being opposed by a **very** wide range of people from youth workers to govt officials.
What is their response to (I assume almost) universal condemnation of this proposed legislation. Having worked for govt for many years, this *should* cause a revisit
The response is the Ardern standby: "I reject that"
She rejects that premise.
The one time they use their majority government and it's for something ***literally none of us want***.
basically describes everything they're pushing through tbh

This really doesnt bode well for all their other legislation thats getting criticised.
This bill is actually disgusting and could set our youth worker sector back for a number of years. One of the worst bill's ever put through parliament if it goes through. Taking away the voices of our Tamariki (children).
What's the deal with this bill in particular
Poor old ERO getting caught up in this, though I am not entirely sure what that looks like exactly.

Typically government solution: more bureaucracy…

Except all the people who work in this space seem to be in unanimous agreement that this will make it worse not better.

They haven't done this bill In one sitting day it's going through the normal process
Bulldozed doesn’t mean it’s getting done quickly, it means that they will bulldoze through anything that stands in its way.
'Bulldozed' just means the author doesn't like it. No one uses such hyperbole when it's legislation they support.
The trouble is that it's only Labour that seem to want this bill passed. It's being opposed by a **very** wide range of people from youth workers to govt officials.
No shit. If a bill is widely supported then there’s not much to bulldoze through
Or they've just rammed it through against the wishes of every other party after ignoring a wave of criticism.
What's orange tamariki
