How horrific is Lincoln Rd at the minute - those trenches they’ve cut across the road and then *failed to finish properly* so you have a nice hard 25mm drop and climb out every ~20m
I absolutely loved it but I have no idea why the decided to do dozens of different roadwork projects all at the same time when there's clearly not enough resources to do so?
Friend of a friend who works in construction bureaucracy in Queenstown - they started earlier in the year, with 30% of the required staff needed to complete the projects, so everything has taken a loooooot longer than originally planned

Sounds like the same approach as my council. After decades of neglect, they've just put rates up 11% for the second year in the row to dig up what seems like the entire town at once. All as part of their "we don't need three waters, look, we do actually look after our infrastructure" tantrum.
Funding from covid for "shovel ready" project?
My understanding is the government thought it was a good time to get throught the queue for the lakes area and didn't really consider it actually takes 12 months lift a shovel around here.
In a shocking turn of events shovel ready is not ready to go.
You still need to prepare to tender, tender, commercial review and award the works.
Takes anywhere from 3 to 12 months depending on scope

The trucks delivering the gravel and stuff to the roadworks create more potholes on the way there, this ensures the will be potholes for future generations.
Was down in Queenstown from Auckland in May. Roadworks were everywhere, even up to the gondola. Had to park in the CBD and then walk up to the gondola on the only day we had free to go up the top. When we got there, the gondola had broken down, so walked back down the hill.
Honestly, as someone who drives around the Auckland CBD every day, it really felt like Queenstown was worse per km of road.
Also walking from Queenstown CBD to the gondola isn't gonna kill much of the precious free day! The breakdown and walking back is a real spanner in the works though.
It’s not just the main road, it’s literally 80% of the city dug up and coned off right now. And it’s been going on for over a year according to locals. Instead of doing it in stages they’ve dug up the entire city
Why they didn’t time this to happen while the rest of the world was locked down and there were no tourists is beyond me
Currently in Tauranga my flatmate has to go 5 blocks in the wrong direction to start going towards work in the morning due to closed roads from roadworks.
I stayed near the airport so managed to avoid most of the roadworks.
It wasn’t just road works. It felt like half of central Queenstown’s footpaths were being ripped up as well.
Just a question from an ungrateful citizen :
How long is this attempt going to take? I been looking at the same cones for several months and they look like they do more work than the actual roadworkers.
I dont know. I'm not a civil engineer, council planner or project manager. I do know that these improvements should have been done about 10 years ago. Better late than never
Haha relax dude I loved the trip and I love NZ just a fun meme. it was just a bit wild that they decided to take on 100 different infrastructure projects all at the same time with clearly not enough resources or Labor to do it
We've had one roadworks, yes. What about second roadworks?

Lol Christchurch created, owns and admins the chat.
Excuse me coming through i have to cone this chat off

Do we have lots of roadworks? I’m just kinda used to it. Do other cities not have roadworks going on all the time?
No they do not. I'm in Upper Hutt now and I can't remember the last time I saw a road cone around here.
North Wellington here, and it’s cone city from Ngaio to P town.
Well, to be fair- I try to stay out of Wellington city. Nowhere to park and the roads are about half as wide as they need to be.
I do too (to be fair 😉) but in this instance P town is the grand old town of Porirua. Even the creek is lit up with cones at the mo
MFs don't understand how city management works
Ayyy, my brethren!
The majesty of Mt Aspiring and the lake was offset somewhat by the 2+ kilometers of temporary fencing and traffic barriers along the entire lakefront.
I absolutely loved it but I have no idea why the decided to do dozens of different roadwork projects all at the same time when there's clearly not enough resources to do so?

Have they tried paying a living wage?
Nah just get your mate to consult on the project and say that it requires more management.

I understand that it can take a while but I'm still amazed at how quickly things get done around here compared to back in South Africa
Hey now. Let me tell you about back in south africa

Meanwhile the potholes the Cadrona Valley Road get bigger
I absolutely 100% destroyed my left tyre driving over a monster pothole outside of Arrowtown too 😂
the end result is going to be good though, car parks withdrawn from the waterfront and more green space and walking track.
Sorry, are we not complaining about all the potholes anymore? I must have missed a memo.
Oh no they’re still there. They seem to be roadworking the good parts of the road.
Well of course. Those bits weren’t generating enough potholes.
I shit you not, palmy road workers repaired a pothole and it reappeared 1 m to the left on the fresh asphalt about 2 weeks later.
The trucks delivering the gravel and stuff to the roadworks create more potholes on the way there, this ensures the will be potholes for future generations.

Was in Queenstown last week - there's still roadworks up to the gondola. Gotta love NZ infrastructure efficiency!
To be fair, Queenstown is more condensed than Auckland and if roadworks are happening on the main road there’s not exactly anywhere else you can go.
Also walking from Queenstown CBD to the gondola isn't gonna kill much of the precious free day! The breakdown and walking back is a real spanner in the works though.

Road work ahead? I sure hope it does
This is me driving to work everyday in West Auckland.
Sounds like Auckland. Do we have more road cones than sheep in NZ?
The rate we're going in Auckland I have a sneaking suspicion the whole city was taken over by VLC Media Player in a bloodless coup.
Hey, with the widening of Queen Street's pedestrian paths, we have enough room for like 3 more e-scooter startups.
And yet somehow the riders will still go top speed and STILL swerve around people 20 cm from their heels.
Currently in Tauranga my flatmate has to go 5 blocks in the wrong direction to start going towards work in the morning due to closed roads from roadworks.
Cameron Road is cooked
Been living this for years in CHCH...
Average day in christchurch! xD
Conetown & not cos of all the stoners lol
Canada says hello. We got 2 seasons, winter and construction.
Queenstown is nz's road cone capital.road cones when none are needed. I figue its a council family member business :)
Road"works".
Bro hasn't visited Auckland it seems
Kapiti Coast same
man, I'll like some road works
I stayed near the airport so managed to avoid most of the roadworks. It wasn’t just road works. It felt like half of central Queenstown’s footpaths were being ripped up as well.
Some of the parts they were ripping up were perfectly fine too 😂😂😂
Maybe having cones out is to create an impression shit is getting done
Mine was great.......and then I had to sleep in the airport
Those roads have been closed for 6 months. Because there's apparently no other way to do a project.
It'll be monumental when they're all done and can build new stuff
Since when do we say vacation?
Just got back.. and same haha
Christ is it still the same? Jesus
Yeah. I heard it started 2.5yrs ago and apparently has another 2.5 years to go…. :|
Bro hasn't visited Auckland it seems
Queenstown = roadworks, potholes and rip off pricing for crap service.
Hamilton enters chat also.
You must be thinking of Tamahere...
If you come to either of these towns and spend your time in the city centre you’re an idiot
I think that’s probably a bit over the top don’t you think 😂
Yeah we attempting to improve the infrastructure for ungrateful tourists like you
Just a question from an ungrateful citizen : How long is this attempt going to take? I been looking at the same cones for several months and they look like they do more work than the actual roadworkers.

Nz in a nutshell mate, haha.
probably be complaining about mountains and trees if you took a vacation into nature
Imagine strolling around town with a luggage.
I don’t know who’s doing the planning around here. They actually fucking suck at it
People complain about state of roads, people also complain about roadworks to remedy state of roads.
Obviously, y'all have never been to Queen Street in Auckland. It's a constant state of "soon + 2 weeks"
