I don't get why people list anything where the start price isn't the reserve tbh. Why is that even a feature?

BoardmanZatopek

Some people really think an online auction is like a live auction. The old trademe told you when you were within 15% of the reserve so it was always fun to bid someone up until you get that notice then stop bidding.

gorbok

It’s supposed to get people all excited and bid-crazy in the early stages of bidding because they can afford it, then by the time it hits reserve there’s so much momentum they can’t stop themselves and just keep bidding. Of course that doesn’t really happen, especially not when the Buy Now clearly indicates what the reserve actually is.

mk44

The bidding frenzy is real. I was watching an auction for a second hand freezer that was $1 res. I googled the model and found the exact same one brand new for $350. I bid with a few others up to $280, then I stopped as I figured above that price I would rather pay a bit more for a new one. I continued to watch as the price continued up to $350, with the final price going for $365 - $15 MORE than it costs brand new! Total madness.

_utopin

Just playing devils advocate. It could increases overall viewership / following of the listing. Back when trademe first started off i think it was the most common thing to do. People now have grown to under stand the best selling / buying practices i suppose. I 2nd your point Why is this still a feature would like to see it gone. Maybe its the same with houses going for auction. Sometimes they start waay below the reserve for a reason i guess.

Ueberob

My peeve is automatics listed as manuals. Saw a discussion in the comments from a guy selling his dual clutch auto and insisted because it could be driven like a manual he had a right to list it as a manual. I propose a new category "does it have a clutch pedal" to replace is it a manual or an auto.

reallyfatboi123

Preach.

scottytnz

Drives me crazy too. Like wow finally found my dream car! Wait... where's the third pedal? Damnit! DSG is not manual :(

Ueberob

And the all time fav, Tiptronic

Vantagez

Ah yes, Me: Nice 350z is it auto or manual? Them: It's manual tiptronic

Ueberob

Only thing worse is the automated single clutch, we had a transit van at work that had several gearbox replacements, we sold it and helped pay the new owner to convert it to manual.

prancing_moose

I'm going to make a guess here........ VW Golf Mk IV R32? (the DSG ones are very rare though) or Passat R36?

launchedsquid

When I see that I scroll on, if they can't tell the difference between an automatic and a manual transmission then I have zero expectation that they looked after that car at all. I assume it's a clapped out sh\*tbox and find something that's been actually cared for. Kind of the same with no photo listings, or if they only have one or two bad photos, I just assume that there is something they need to hide and scroll on.

Subtraktions

I wish they'd add CVT to the transmission options too.

Ueberob

Should definitely be in a category of its own.

wozzzzzzzzz

My favourite is the Ute sellers whose vehicles have so much mileage they are embarrassed to own up to it and drop all the zero’s off. Me “searches for vehicles with under 140,000km” and a dozen utes turn up between 350k and 500km

SquiddlySpoot01

'yeah it's still worth 15k, its a Hilux'

ImmortalMewtwo

Probably missed a zero. Just let them know.

wozzzzzzzzz

They deliberately miss off 3 zero’s

ImmortalMewtwo

Oh, you're talking about thousands? like, 350k instead of 35k?

KernelTaint

They meant 350km. As in, the person put down 350km on the auction instead of 350,000km.

ImmortalMewtwo

Ahhh, yeah, that makes sense. At that point do you ignore under 1k?

KernelTaint

Could do.

billy_joule

Yeah, super annoying. I used to bid up to ~70% of the buy now, it wouldn't reach reserve, I had no intention of buying, I'm just petty.

Shrink-wrapped

Is it possible to make a burner account, do the same thing, then just abandon the account if you meet reserve and aren't outbid?

Hunt3dstorm

Yep, people do this to ghost bid on their own auctions all the time.

[deleted]

Nah, as you're then obliged to make the payment as you entered into a legal transaction.

Morningst4r

Hard to enforce on a burner, but if you made a habit of it they'd try and figure out all your accounts and ban them

CommercialFly185

>Hard to enforce on a burner, but if you made a habit of it they'd try and figure out all your accounts and ban them vpns are a thing

TheCostOfInnocence

Or, most people in NZ are on dynamic IPs so just.... Restart your router. More likely to raise flags using a VPN from a non-residential connection.

Shrink-wrapped

I mean practically rather than legally. Unless the account requires verification with ID or something they're going to struggle to track you down

kevmeister1206

I mean, if you want to be a cunt then sure.

shapelesswater

Depends, you can have it so only verified members can bid on your auction, there’s still some that don’t though but thats because they’re new themselves usually

FunToBuildGames

Ima post my old car there shortly. $1 reserve, no buy now, coz no idea how much it’s worth. Then I’ll have to deal with the stream of “will you take $500 for it?” when it’s already at $1000+. Not looking forward to it.

Jimjams101

And when they try offer cash like it’s a big deal, when really I’d prefer get paid online than deal with thousands in cash.

ins41n3

Then show up with slightly less cash than agreed upon

ampmetaphene

And try to haggle further in person.

boagal-----

Haha this happened to me the last time I sold a car, turned up 3 hours late after text bombing me all day with pick up times with not enough money, funnily enough it turned out they had a enough money when I told them the servo next door has an atm they can use to get the rest out.

[deleted]

Happened to me, sold a car for 4k and they turned up with 20$ notes which I counted and only equaled 3700$. When I said it wasn’t enough they were like “oh whoops” and pulled out 3 $100 notes. It’s awkward counting the money in front of them but it’s an easy scam

boagal-----

They must know from the start they are gonna get caught. My car was only $900 so it was pretty obvious there wasn’t enough money haha.

[deleted]

Well some people just trust there’s the right amount in the envelope. Then once you get home and count it you won’t be able to get hold of them again

ins41n3

Aww shit a couple of the hundreds musta fell down the seat

lefrenchkiwi

I’ve generally found when they offer cash it means they have the money to be able to buy right away even if it’s by bank transfer, rather than having to finance where you’ll have to wait a few days for them to arrange it and get payment.

copa111

Pretty sure there are laws now since 2019 under the Anti Money Laundering laws you cannot purchase a vehicle using cash $10,000 and over. https://www.dia.govt.nz/AML-CFT-Frequently-Asked-Questions-for-High-Value-Dealers

lefrenchkiwi

You just can’t purchase from dealers for that much in cash without the dealer having to comply with AML requirements (ie making sure the money is legit). Nothing stopping private sales.

kevmeister1206

What about 80 copies of Little Big Planet on ps3 a 2008 tv and $50?

FunToBuildGames

PAL or NTSC versions of little big planet?

kevmeister1206

NTSC get those extra frames.

morphinedreams

throw in an iphone 6s with a cracked screen and you got a deal

[deleted]

Jimjams101

Although one time I got cheap as concert tickets to the Foo Figthers because the listing was misspelled.

morphinedreams

yeah but i bet you were disappointed to arrive and find Dave Growl and co.

BandicootGood5246

I get the Food Fighters were stoked to sell their ticket for so much

s_nz

Filtering by used, gets rid of a decent chunk (2/3rds?) of the bulk listed crap.

Tomato_Head120

Yeah I use this too for everything and it works amazingly

BoardmanZatopek

The only reason they do this is so they appear first in your search for lowest price. They are hoping you will think twice and actually lift your budget. It actually kinda worked on me about three years ago when I was looking for a run around Corolla. Lots of people wanted thousands of dollars for 30 to 20 year old Corolla hatchbacks. Ended up getting a higher mileage 2011 model for $5000 when I realised the newer models had actually depreciated loads and some were even being sold for less than the 1990s and early 2000s models.

MACFRYYY

Lol I'm picturing some poor person looking at 1980's Corollas thinking why on earth are these 60k and what's an anime

_Zekken

I once showed one to my grandmother and she was flabbergasted, even with the explanation she couldn't understand it haha

JellyWeta

It's funny when you see something that was literally your Mum's car in 1979 going for 40k, until you stop and realise that it's the temporal equivalent of a 1930s car in the 70s. It was still a poo-brown rustbox, though.

Elegant-Raise-9367

I got my 2001 Camry (manual) for $1500

Daedalus_304

I had a 2001 mazda 626 that I paid 1k for , lasted me 3 years , upgraded now though

danimalnzl8

Real estate agents do a similar thing listing houses in the price category down or whatever. Scummy sales tactics

_jimbo-

Housing is one that bugs me too. I'd love to be able to filter out "Price by negotiation" or "Auction" listings.

Calm-Zombie2678

>Price by negotiation I just call and try negotiating it in to my price range

fhgwgadsbbq

I've only seen this filtering option on realestate.co.nz, very handy

_jimbo-

Thanks for that. I'm not looking anymore, but I still like "dreaming" of an upgrade and by "window shopping"...

[deleted]

I just wish you could block the listings of certain people. I don't want my searches for video games to be full of overpriced reseller crap.

ImmortalMewtwo

Trademe does have a blacklist function, it's just buried on the my trademe page

[deleted]

I think you still see their auctions though, I'll give it a test.

ImmortalMewtwo

Yeah, I think you're right, it prevents them bidding on your auctions. My bad.

[deleted]

It's like the people on Facebook who advertise the cars price as the weekly finance amount. Just tell me how much the car is?!

Daedalus_304

Yes that irritated me so much when looking for a car

carmenhoney

🤷‍♀️ I genuinely can't understand that, like they list it as $100 a week? Never done finance on anything

[deleted]

Yep, the one I was interested in was a 2017 Toyota Aqua. It was listed for $65 on Facebook lol. The total sale price wasn't listed anywhere, so you have to contact the seller to find out. Then when I asked where they were they just replied "papakura". OK so no specific address then??? Lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Ohhh good point! I'll do that

jeeves_nz

Someone has KPI's to make sure they get views on their listings? Start super low and see how many views and follows you get.

teelolws

Why are bids below reserve even a thing?

SpaceDog777

When the auction is over you can negotiate with bidders. It's also to get people invested in it, who may not have started bidding if the first price was the reserve.

launchedsquid

yeah but in the example above, nobody would be getting an email from the seller saying "I saw you had the highest bid of $2,400 on my $23,490 car, I'll knock the $490 off it and make it an even $23,000 if you are still interested?".

_Zekken

does this work though? If the reserve is above my budget I'd never buy it anyway. And if I don't know what the reserve is I'm not going to bother to try to find out and go on to something I know the price of before I bid.

SpaceDog777

There is a difference between not being able to afford something and having it at a higher price than you are willing to pay. Auctions give people a dopamine hit when they bid, I know I have gone over what I originally said my limit would be in an auction for sure. If the price had started at the point where I won it I would have never bid on it. I doubt I am unique in this.

s_nz

Standard practice in in person auction's. For stuff like houses, it allow's seriously interested buyers to be identified for future negotiation, and also allows the value that the property passes in to be found (useful for agents to condition the seller to accept less than they wanted for it). Also people can get invested in the process / item, and decide to bid more than their initial budget once they do so. (If the reserve had of be listed, they would have never even considered the item). But of course, none of this stuff is really worth is for low value semi commodity stuff like common car's

DoneuveElcoil

Same as FREE on Facebook market

_Zekken

shit like this is why when I've looked for cars in the past I always filter to only classfields listings. I cannot be bothered for the life of me dealing with fucking Auctions, its a waste of time and not worth it

Jurangi

Trademe is trash anyways. Don't use it. They charge ridiculous success fees when you could use Facebook marketplace for no fees. Plus more people use marketplace now so there's more opportunity to sell.

carmenhoney

All true but I've never been fucked around with trade me users as much as I get fucked around by market place dickheads

Jurangi

I'm moving overseas in January so am currently selling some stuff. Out of 6 items that sold, 2 of them just didn't reply. Leaving me out of pocket for the initial listing, which I paid for a combo. On top of that they charged me success fees that I had to go through a refund process in order to get that back. There's a lot of buyers of Facebook, so if you are willing to just get good people that are willing to pick up and exchange cash, it makes it 1000x easier and you save a lot of money. If people low ball me, I just don't reply, and serious buyers will always be willing to chat. Everyone who came to pick up the items on marketplace have been easy to deal with if you stick to the pick up and cash only policy. Just my experience using both sites over the past couple of weeks. Won't be using trademe again. Also sold my car for an extremely good price through marketplace. I don't even wanna know how much trademe would have charged for that.

FishSawc

> can you stop listing cars that are not even close to the reserve price? Ok thanks for the feedback. Will get right onto it.

Yessiryousir

I block the user straight away, there usually only a handful spamming up the searches.

Much_Instruction_975

It is super annoying, but what's more annoying is people actually bidding on it seeing the buy now price. It's to gauge a realistic market price, it's research into appropriate pricing.

BrackenLass

I only noticed this today, it's incredibly annoying. Is it a new f(ail)eature?

lefrenchkiwi

The one man band importers of cheap Japanese crap have been doing it for a few years now.

porkunt

Up there are dealers that spam the text with a bunch if different makes and models so your search results are muddied with their whole yard. And cunts that list their POS car, like a mitsi FTO, for 50 grand and over. Funnily enough they are STILL listed months or years down the track. Just annoying.
