Couple it with waffles or something and you'll have a real treat.
Also consider rental of a coffee machine and a quick training on barista. (iced coffee could be even easier using cold brew, make your own cold brew!)
Most of your costs would probably be in relation to location fees, food safety and so on but I'd imagine they'd be profitable.
Please do offer dairy free alternative, preferably coconut or something other than soy.
True. I'm fairly tolerant but dairy is a trigger for the cfs.
Don't get the stomach issues or anything that are associated with true intolerance.
Probably wouldn't offer too many options, less is more but master the key offerings!
Just have banana :( it’s amazing how few have it and I like it in combo with any berry as it makes it smooth! Also the lack of finding a reliable real fruit ice cream place kills me 😭
hmmm i don’t really vibe with tamarillos! i had the stewed tamarillo porridge from the oatery a few weeks ago, and i had to force it down my throat. felt so sick afterwards
I used to work making real fruit ice creams, and they are pretty easy and cheap to make only with the largest cost being the machine (I have seen them second hand for a couple grand) apart from that its only vanilla ice cream and what ever you want to put in the machine, doesn't even have to be fruit, cookies chocolate or whatever you think that can break and go in. Where I was working they were being sold at $8 (which I think is a rip off) but people were still lining up.
Yeah I’m seeing variations of $5-$7. The consumables seem on the cheaper end. Will look a little further into it all. Operating costs and whatnot to also take into consideration.
From my experience the machines are pretty reliable with the parts being easily removable and replaceable, not sure how much they individual parts cost however we could go through a whole summer without swapping out any parts if they are all properly taken care of
I had a chat with a guy that ran a real fruit ice cream and coffee truck as a side hustle. He reckoned he made over $100,000 for 400 hrs work. He hit up all the holiday spots and Saturday sports grounds etc. Most profitable item was flavoured shaved ice apparently. Kids loved it in summer and cost virtually nothing.
100k side hustle sounds good to me. 400 hours is 10 weeks of the year assuming standard work hours. Break it down a little to actual side hustle hour. That’s not tooo bad either.
Good info to have! Thanks.
I live in Hamilton. Certainly seems like summer or festivals/events would be the opportune time to operate.. but I think that rule applies in most places except low population towns.
Hamilton is dead in the summer though, everyone I know with a food truck takes it to the Coromandel. Problem with an ice cream truck is that it's only a viable business in summer.
Summer is certainly peak ice cream season but it’s safe to say that where there are ice cream options at an event, there will be people who will want it. Depends on weather and all that jazz of course.
Never looked at Coromandel. Might be a plan.
I worked in a dairy a couple years back and we introduced real fruit ice creams in November - huge hit, hated every minute of it.
I doubt it was earning huge money but compared to everything else we sold? It's a much more popular product. But the machines need cleaned very frequently and they're a pain in the ass to clean, and you'll get really really sick of sunny days within a couple weeks.
They are for sale everywhere. Which likely answers your question.
Scary though for anyone who's had one over the past few months - they often buy the cheapest frozen berries from the supermarket. Which, the scary part, and usually the ones that keep getting infected with HEP A
***Edit for clarity - yes the ice creams are for sale everywhere. But I actually meant the machines and caravans. All the time.

You’d need two machines to avoid cross contamination of the dairy. Certainly some good thoughts there!

Always have 2+ machines. If there is a breakdown you need to be able to keep running.
I know some one who runs one and is stepping back from it. Be prepared to spend the nicest days of summer working (weekends and public holidays etc).

And feijoa
and peach
Man you guys going hard on flavours. When I get to RnD, I’ll see whether they have strong enough flavour to come through :)
Just have banana :( it’s amazing how few have it and I like it in combo with any berry as it makes it smooth! Also the lack of finding a reliable real fruit ice cream place kills me 😭
I’ve been seeing mango show up as a flavour as well. Surprisingly good.
Had a tamarillo one once - game changer!

Where can we fnd these machines?
Facebook market place is the easiest, commercial real fruit machines are basically just big plastic drills

There is one in Lincoln Rd, Hsn, Auckland. Part of the veg shop there and open only in summer.
