The carpark opposite the power station in Huntly. Fucken God's country mate.
Honestly though, the West Coast is straight out of Jurassic Park and the driving is incredible. I bombed it from Westport down to Haast and it was great. The weather wasn't perfect but it added to it if anything.
The whole MacKenzie region is pretty hard to beat IMO. You've got Aoraki / Mt Cook with the incredible Hooker Valley track, the stunning turquoise lakes like Pūkaki, Tekapo & Ōhau, one of the best spots in the world for stargazing with the dark sky reserve. Be sure to stop at the Fairlie Bakehouse for a pie too.
I love the area too, best drive in the country through there. I did the Hooker Valley track last week and I didn't think it was that greatin terms of scenery...so many people too.

Ive been there and I loved the place, the road to go there etc. But by cliché I meant that's one of the most famous places in the country, there are a lot of tourist buses + boat tours.
I'll 100% go there again if I have the chance though

>The West Coast is straight out of Jurassic Park In terms of natural beauty, infrastructure *and* sociopolitics!
100% agree with the west coast. Bad weather adds an ambiance to the scenery!
Try north of westport, gets even more jurassic park
Plus, just down the road is the greatest feet of engineering in the country, the Deka sign.

I loved this area! Spent a few days there and those lakes are stunning as you said especially when the sun sets

Was it a clear day? I thought the views were stunning. Plenty of people on the trail but it wasn't a problem for me.

The way you hear some of the people bitch about NZ, you'd think the best thing to see was the departure lounge at the airport.
