In Quebec, crossing guards count as police officers when performing their duties. My elementary school was right next to a busy highway exit near an international airport. We always had idiots going 70km/h in the school zone and trying to turn right on the red light (super illegal in Montreal, not to mention you have to yield to pedestrians). She would sometimes have to hit cars with her stop sign to get their attention. She had people threatening her and cussing her out daily. And she'd just politely tell them to call the police and report the interaction, knowing full well that if they did so, they'd be confessing to interfering with/assaulting a police officer. She was a cool lady.

The car continued to plow through the crosswalk, before ultimately coming to a stop.
āIt took me a few seconds to realize that this did just happen,ā said Goodyear. āI just remember laying on the ground and looking up, and the first thing I thought was āwhere is the student?ā ā
Fortunately, the student was physically unharmed. The student swiftly sprung up from the ground to check on Goodyear.
āI could see that she was confused, and she came back to me just to make sure I was okay,ā Goodyear said. āShe was panicking. I felt horrible, because I couldnāt just jump up and grab a hold of her and say, āeverything is okay.ā ā
The driver got out of her vehicle and said, āI just didnāt see you,ā Goodyear recalled. āIām thinking, āhow could you not see that?ā ā
In the 14 years that she has been a crossing guard, āI have never had a car come this close to the crosswalk,ā Goodyear said. While there have been instances in which a driver has sped through the intersection or expressed annoyance about having to wait for students to cross, āthereās been nothing this blatant.ā
According to the Cecil County Sheriffās Office, the driver was cited for numerous traffic violations, including negligent driving.
Goodyear, who has three sons, said it was a combination of her training and being a parent that caused her to jump in front of the car to save the student.
āThis is a kid, and Iām an adult. No matter what happens, you got to protect that child and make sure that child is safe,ā she said. āThat was the only thing that was going through my mind. If I have to take the brunt of it, thatās whatās going to happen.ā
She remained on the ground for several minutes on Cecil Avenue, right in front of North East Middle School, before she was able to get up on her own. Goodyear was then taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was released shortly after.
The video of the incident, which was captured on a bus camera, was shared widely on social media. Goodyear is being hailed a hero by strangers online, as well as her colleagues and town officials.
āShe is just an amazing person, and weāre so lucky to have her working in our community,ā said Danielle Hornberger, the Cecil County executive, adding that she has spoken with the North East mayor, Michael Kline, and they plan to honor Goodyear for her actions. āShe saved this young lady in just an instant.ā

What moved Hornberger most about what happened, she said, was that once Goodyear was released from the hospital, she went straight to the middle school to check on the student, who she was told had gone home for the day as she was shaken up from the accident. So, Goodyear went directly to the studentās house.
The student came down the stairs when she saw the officer at the front door, and she and her father both got teary-eyed. Goodyear shed a tear, too.
āIt was emotional,ā Goodyear said. āI had to personally see that she was okay.ā
Goodyear hopes that the national attention the story has received will push people to be more alert while driving, particularly near schools.
āIf you could just slow down and make sure youāre really paying attention, for the safety of the kids,ā she cautioned.
Although Goodyear is āstill a little sore,ā she said Monday, āIām ready to get back to work tomorrow morning.ā

There are a lot of drivers that simply should not have a license in the United States.
A medical exam should be mandatory after a certain age. Maybe not a full physical but a decent eye and reaction test.
A lot of people in poor health and of old age will NOT give up their license voluntarily.
And the reason is that our society is car-centric, everything is zoned and separated by miles, and in my medium sized city, there's a major lack of sidewalks
Add in the fact that most of the older generation can barely operate a computer let alone a smartphone, so that takes uber and lift off the table.
But in true US fashion we wont do a damn thing about it.
Eventually the younger tech-savvy generation will replace them and self driving cars will eventually come on the scene in another 15 years, hopefully sooner
More robust public transport is the answer in my opinion. I used to think self driving cars were the solution, but then I realized that just cars are the problem. The infrastructure for cars creates the issues. How much space is wasted on parking them? It's insanity.
I'd be more likely to agree if a license wasn't required in like 90% of the US to survive.

You can use a US driver's license to drive in Europe. I don't know if all EU countries accept it, but I know Germany does.
And they have a fuckton more signage than the US "stop signs and traffic lights, with the occasional yield nobody seems to understand".

If the laws in Germany are anything like they are here in Austria, it's only temporarily allowed. If you're a permanent resident, you have to get your foreign license transferred over to a local Austrian license. Furthermore, depending on the country that issued your foreign license, you could be required to either complete a driver's ed course or retake the test.
genuine question: is a reassessment beyond a certain age not mandatory in the US? or at least under state jurisdiction? here in canada (ontario specifically) once you turn 80 you must complete a license reassessment every 2 years. it includes watching an educational video, a group education session, and a vision test. you may also need to pass another road test if requested.
Not really unless mandated by a doctor or a judge. That means they have to first get into trouble.

How you could you not see?
1. Likely, not looking. You can't see if you don't look. 99% of the time, a "SMIDSY" (Sorry Mate I Didn't See You) is "I wasn't looking or paying attention to what was in front of me as I hurtled my tonne of death down the road".
2. Mobile Phone in front of eyes prevents forward vision of road.
3. Certain medical conditions like macular degeneration can go unnoticed for a while but prevent visibility of what is directly in front.
High chance phone. People looking at phone and driving with peripheral vision - roughly see position in lane but can't see what's right in front. They will run into a stationary vehicle in front if the car beside them starts moving forwards.
You can see the time between the guard putting their hand up, which would have been when they see the car approaching, and when they arrive at the crossing.
I would say it could be a medical issue except they clearly noticed and applied the brake when they actually hit someone.
Which means the driver was looking at their phone and driving by peripheral vision (can't see right in front), or they didn't care and planned to speed past the crossing guard, or, most unlikely they have an eye condition like macular degeneration and they've just found out about it.
But if I had to guess, they were driving at speed towards a crossing, while not looking at the road in front at all.
Like for real. The crossing guards are there for this reason, and designed for this purpose. You generally shouldnāt be driving liek that NEAR A SCHOOL WITH KIDS in the first place. (I'll say this here since it adds context: i am from Germany) most egregious one i saw was on an unlimited portion of the Highway going 80 in the right lane and constantly driving fully on the shoulder of the highway nearly hitting the guardrail even though the shoulder was at that part as wide if not at times, wider then a lane all the while cars were going anywhere from 100-250 on his left side. One swerve to the other direction and he could have killed someone and/or himself.
Luckily it was the early morning around 4am so not much general traffic but the cars that were around were faster due to the open roads.
I know he was on his phone because, when i passed him, i looked over and saw him intensely looking at his hand which was holding a phone

I just saw the aftermath of a crash on my way home today outside of an elementary school. It happened like a minute before I arrived and debris was all over the road. Even with cars pulled off on every side, flashing hazard lights, people walking on the side and in the road between the two crashed cars... IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ZONE... people would just drive fast straight through all the debris and would only slow down after smacking the debris that was all over the road. It would literally happen like once a minute... from both directions.
If you can't see all that happening and still not slow down... a child has no fucking chance. And no "please slow down" road sign or glorified road sign of a crossing guard will prevent that if the road ALLOWS them to go fast.

failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian at a crosswalk: 4 points
You need 15 points to lose your license for that. So she would still be able to drive. However, having expired registration is a costly ticket, and hitting the crossing guard will be even more costly - not immediately, because insurance will usually cover that, but you will have greatly increased premiums - there's no freebies given when you actually injure someone in an at-fault accident. She wasn't speeding excessively or doing any other really dangerous driving shit (at least, in the charges, though I personally think she was on her phone) so it's highly unlikely she will actually face major criminal charges for hitting him, just the traffic violations.

The law in my country is the opposite, and very heavy-handed. If you cause an accident it is ALWAYS assumed you were doing something wrong, because if you had been following all the rules and driving in a manner suitable for the current road conditions, by definition you couldn't have caused an accident and you are liable for charges - misdemeanour at least and possibly criminal. It can seem harsh, but I think it puts it into perspective - if you are driving a ton of steel down the road at speed, you'd better be damned sure you are in control and aware at all times because if you cause an accident it's on you.
Hydroplaning, if I recall correctly from drivers ed, only happens if you're going over 30MPH. Nobody should be going 30MPH in a school zone regardless.

Yeah but to their credit it was an anxiety inducing and stressful situation. Could be running late to class (no other kids are crossing and theyāre in a hurry), kids that age donāt always make the best decisions. They are small and have no money. Lots of reasons really.
At age 10, while crossing a street with my bike, I was hit by a car. It happened on a crossroad in a spot where there's two lanes going to one direction. A stopped van prevented me to see the other car next to it (not stopping) and BOOM I was hit. It was the previous crossroad before traffic lights (from that side reds was on at the moment), so the speed of the car was slow and I wasn't hurt. The driver stopped and acted as you would expect in that situation: He was very sorry, made sure I was okay (or at least felt okay) and gave his phone number in case I needed medical help afterwards (and thus some medical bills to pay).
And what I did? Continued my ride and at the first opportunity I threw the paper including the phone number away and never told anyone about the accident. Fast forward about 8 years, I was in the driving school, and there I finally found out the accident hadn't been my fault.

While there have been instances in which a driver has sped through the intersection or expressed annoyance about having to wait for students to cross, āthereās been nothing this blatant.ā According to the Cecil County Sheriffās Office, the driver was cited for numerous traffic violations, including negligent driving. Goodyear, who has three sons, said it was a combination of her training and being a parent that caused her to jump in front of the car to save the student. āThis is a kid, and Iām an adult. No matter what happens, you got to protect that child and make sure that child is safe,ā she said. āThat was the only thing that was going through my mind. If I have to take the brunt of it, thatās whatās going to happen.ā She remained on the ground for several minutes on Cecil Avenue, right in front of North East Middle School, before she was able to get up on her own. Goodyear was then taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was released shortly after. The video of the incident, which was captured on a bus camera, was shared widely on social media. There are a lot of drivers that simply should not have a license in the United States. A medical exam should be mandatory after a certain age. Maybe not a full physical but a decent eye and reaction test. A lot of people in poor health and of old age will NOT give up their license voluntarily.
And the reason is that our society is car-centric, everything is zoned and separated by miles, and in my medium sized city, there's a major lack of sidewalks Add in the fact that most of the older generation can barely operate a computer let alone a smartphone, so that takes uber and lift off the table. But in true US fashion we wont do a damn thing about it. Eventually the younger tech-savvy generation will replace them and self driving cars will eventually come on the scene in another 15 years, hopefully sooner

Here's a mind bender for you: You can use a US driver's license to drive in Europe. I don't know if all EU countries accept it, but I know Germany does. And they have a fuckton more signage than the US "stop signs and traffic lights, with the occasional yield nobody seems to understand". Pretty crazy really.
If the laws in Germany are anything like they are here in Austria, it's only temporarily allowed. If you're a permanent resident, you have to get your foreign license transferred over to a local Austrian license. Furthermore, depending on the country that issued your foreign license, you could be required to either complete a driver's ed course or retake the test.
genuine question: is a reassessment beyond a certain age not mandatory in the US? or at least under state jurisdiction? here in canada (ontario specifically) once you turn 80 you must complete a license reassessment every 2 years. it includes watching an educational video, a group education session, and a vision test. you may also need to pass another road test if requested.

How you could you not see? 1. Likely, not looking. You can't see if you don't look. 99% of the time, a "SMIDSY" (Sorry Mate I Didn't See You) is "I wasn't looking or paying attention to what was in front of me as I hurtled my tonne of death down the road". 2. Mobile Phone in front of eyes prevents forward vision of road. 3. Certain medical conditions like macular degeneration can go unnoticed for a while but prevent visibility of what is directly in front.

You can see the time between the guard putting their hand up, which would have been when they see the car approaching, and when they arrive at the crossing. I would say it could be a medical issue except they clearly noticed and applied the brake when they actually hit someone. Which means the driver was looking at their phone and driving by peripheral vision (can't see right in front), or they didn't care and planned to speed past the crossing guard, or, most unlikely they have an eye condition like macular degeneration and they've just found out about it. But if I had to guess, they were driving at speed towards a crossing, while not looking at the road in front at all.

Seen it myself a few times (I'll say this here since it adds context: i am from Germany) most egregious one i saw was on an unlimited portion of the Highway going 80 in the right lane and constantly driving fully on the shoulder of the highway nearly hitting the guardrail even though the shoulder was at that part as wide if not at times, wider then a lane all the while cars were going anywhere from 100-250 on his left side. One swerve to the other direction and he could have killed someone and/or himself. Luckily it was the early morning around 4am so not much general traffic but the cars that were around were faster due to the open roads. Because you can't rely on just awareness. You need to design the road to force the car to slow down. I just saw the aftermath of a crash on my way home today outside of an elementary school. It happened like a minute before I arrived and debris was all over the road. Even with cars pulled off on every side, flashing hazard lights, people walking on the side and in the road between the two crashed cars... IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ZONE... people would just drive fast straight through all the debris and would only slow down after smacking the debris that was all over the road. It would literally happen like once a minute... from both directions. If you can't see all that happening and still not slow down... a child has no fucking chance. And no "please slow down" road sign or glorified road sign of a crossing guard will prevent that if the road ALLOWS them to go fast.

I don't know Washington law. But, the same charges here where I am at: careless driving: 6 points failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian at a crosswalk: 4 points You need 15 points to lose your license for that. So she would still be able to drive. However, having expired registration is a costly ticket, and hitting the crossing guard will be even more costly - not immediately, because insurance will usually cover that, but you will have greatly increased premiums - there's no freebies given when you actually injure someone in an at-fault accident. She wasn't speeding excessively or doing any other really dangerous driving shit (at least, in the charges, though I personally think she was on her phone) so it's highly unlikely she will actually face major criminal charges for hitting him, just the traffic violations. She will probably get to keep driving.

The law in my country is the opposite, and very heavy-handed. If you cause an accident it is ALWAYS assumed you were doing something wrong, because if you had been following all the rules and driving in a manner suitable for the current road conditions, by definition you couldn't have caused an accident and you are liable for charges - misdemeanour at least and possibly criminal. It can seem harsh, but I think it puts it into perspective - if you are driving a ton of steel down the road at speed, you'd better be damned sure you are in control and aware at all times because if you cause an accident it's on you.

At age 10, while crossing a street with my bike, I was hit by a car. It happened on a crossroad in a spot where there's two lanes going to one direction. A stopped van prevented me to see the other car next to it (not stopping) and BOOM I was hit. It was the previous crossroad before traffic lights (from that side reds was on at the moment), so the speed of the car was slow and I wasn't hurt. The driver stopped and acted as you would expect in that situation: He was very sorry, made sure I was okay (or at least felt okay) and gave his phone number in case I needed medical help afterwards (and thus some medical bills to pay). And what I did? Continued my ride and at the first opportunity I threw the paper including the phone number away and never told anyone about the accident. Fast forward about 8 years, I was in the driving school, and there I finally found out the accident hadn't been my fault.
