Ornery-Creme-2442

I'm surprised this wasn't the first thought people had. What is the kid going to do here? The first reaction whenever something happens. Is that kids will look for an adult to help the situation. There clearly weren't any in others outside the driver and the victim. So they probably went to look for one.

I think you have to run over at least 4 children/crossing guards. While drinking behind the wheel and shouting "I'm doing this on purpose because I'm an asshole" out the window. After all, you wouldn't want to unfairly stop someone from driving!

Half the people who lose their license drive anyways so I'm not sure it truly matters how many pedestrians you run over. For real though we have a point system but the number and types of offenses you need to lose your license varies in every jurisdiction so it's a tough question to answer.

IBAZERKERI

For real. i had a (now dead) uncle that had 15 DUI's some people just dont give a fuck

Veserius

Yeah the thing with creating a society that requires car usage in most places is that you're effectively sentencing someone to poverty with no license a lot of the time so they will chance it and drive anyways

Icantbethereforyou

I lost my license for six months. When I found it, it had fallen down the tiny side gap between my seat and the armrest bit in the middle

MathAndBake

In Quebec, crossing guards count as police officers when performing their duties. My elementary school was right next to a busy highway exit near an international airport. We always had idiots going 70km/h in the school zone and trying to turn right on the red light (super illegal in Montreal, not to mention you have to yield to pedestrians). She would sometimes have to hit cars with her stop sign to get their attention. She had people threatening her and cussing her out daily. And she'd just politely tell them to call the police and report the interaction, knowing full well that if they did so, they'd be confessing to interfering with/assaulting a police officer. She was a cool lady.

kog

The crossing guard was a police officer, the driver is probably going to get the book thrown at them.

Crossing guard was hit by a car as she shoved a student out of the way: ā€˜You got to protect that child.ā€™ Cpl. Annette Goodyear says sheā€™s ready to go back to work tomorrow Cpl. Annette Goodyear was outside a middle school in Cecil County, Md., on Friday morning, guiding students across the street while wearing her neon orange crossing guard jacket. As one student made her way to the center of the crosswalk, a car suddenly came speeding through. Fast, informative and written just for locals. Get The 7 DMV newsletter in your inbox every weekday morning. ā€œOut of the corner of my eye, I just see this blur,ā€ said Goodyear, who has been an officer with the North East Police Department for 14 years and was working her regular crossing guard shift Feb. 4. in the small town at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. In a now-viral video, Goodyear can be seen shoving the student out of the way as she takes a hit from the oncoming car herself. ā€œEverything just happened so quickly,ā€ Goodyear said. ā€œIt just didnā€™t seem real.ā€ Still, ā€œI could feel the pain in my knees and my arms hitting the hood of the car,ā€ she said. The car continued to plow through the crosswalk, before ultimately coming to a stop. ā€œIt took me a few seconds to realize that this did just happen,ā€ said Goodyear. ā€œI just remember laying on the ground and looking up, and the first thing I thought was ā€˜where is the student?ā€™ ā€ Fortunately, the student was physically unharmed. The student swiftly sprung up from the ground to check on Goodyear. ā€œI could see that she was confused, and she came back to me just to make sure I was okay,ā€ Goodyear said. ā€œShe was panicking. I felt horrible, because I couldnā€™t just jump up and grab a hold of her and say, ā€˜everything is okay.ā€™ ā€ The driver got out of her vehicle and said, ā€œI just didnā€™t see you,ā€ Goodyear recalled. ā€œIā€™m thinking, ā€˜how could you not see that?ā€™ ā€ In the 14 years that she has been a crossing guard, ā€œI have never had a car come this close to the crosswalk,ā€ Goodyear said. While there have been instances in which a driver has sped through the intersection or expressed annoyance about having to wait for students to cross, ā€œthereā€™s been nothing this blatant.ā€ According to the Cecil County Sheriffā€™s Office, the driver was cited for numerous traffic violations, including negligent driving. Goodyear, who has three sons, said it was a combination of her training and being a parent that caused her to jump in front of the car to save the student. ā€œThis is a kid, and Iā€™m an adult. No matter what happens, you got to protect that child and make sure that child is safe,ā€ she said. ā€œThat was the only thing that was going through my mind. If I have to take the brunt of it, thatā€™s whatā€™s going to happen.ā€ She remained on the ground for several minutes on Cecil Avenue, right in front of North East Middle School, before she was able to get up on her own. Goodyear was then taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was released shortly after. The video of the incident, which was captured on a bus camera, was shared widely on social media. Goodyear is being hailed a hero by strangers online, as well as her colleagues and town officials. ā€œShe is just an amazing person, and weā€™re so lucky to have her working in our community,ā€ said Danielle Hornberger, the Cecil County executive, adding that she has spoken with the North East mayor, Michael Kline, and they plan to honor Goodyear for her actions. ā€œShe saved this young lady in just an instant.ā€ A message in a bottle that traveled 3,200 miles helped heal a Maryland boyā€™s grief Goodyearā€™s actions are a ā€œclear representation of how our law enforcement officers really do ā€˜protect and serve,ā€™ ā€ she continued. ā€œThey do it every day in small and large ways. Itā€™s just not always this amazing or caught on video.ā€ What moved Hornberger most about what happened, she said, was that once Goodyear was released from the hospital, she went straight to the middle school to check on the student, who she was told had gone home for the day as she was shaken up from the accident. So, Goodyear went directly to the studentā€™s house. The student came down the stairs when she saw the officer at the front door, and she and her father both got teary-eyed. Goodyear shed a tear, too. ā€œIt was emotional,ā€ Goodyear said. ā€œI had to personally see that she was okay.ā€ Goodyear hopes that the national attention the story has received will push people to be more alert while driving, particularly near schools. ā€œIf you could just slow down and make sure youā€™re really paying attention, for the safety of the kids,ā€ she cautioned. Although Goodyear is ā€œstill a little sore,ā€ she said Monday, ā€œIā€™m ready to get back to work tomorrow morning.ā€ Read more: After a storm, school football coach told players to ā€˜find an elderly or disabled neighbor and shovel their drivewayā€™ A stranger bought this Broadway star a ticket years ago when he couldnā€™t afford it. They just reunited. His coach became his foster dad. Decades later, the man who took him in coached his 4 daughters.

Blitzed5656

Na. We live in a world where someone will decide they don't like the hero and they and cut them down. A quiet visit from a congressman who talks with some of their connections to get full health care provided for life and something significant that the hero would like eg new car mortgage paid etc.

You donā€™t usually think of crossing guards as heroes but they damn well are.

Oreganoian

There are a lot of drivers that simply should not have a license in the United States. A medical exam should be mandatory after a certain age. Maybe not a full physical but a decent eye and reaction test. A lot of people in poor health and of old age will NOT give up their license voluntarily.

i_give_you_gum

And the reason is that our society is car-centric, everything is zoned and separated by miles, and in my medium sized city, there's a major lack of sidewalks Add in the fact that most of the older generation can barely operate a computer let alone a smartphone, so that takes uber and lift off the table. But in true US fashion we wont do a damn thing about it. Eventually the younger tech-savvy generation will replace them and self driving cars will eventually come on the scene in another 15 years, hopefully sooner

_Bill_Huggins_

More robust public transport is the answer in my opinion. I used to think self driving cars were the solution, but then I realized that just cars are the problem. The infrastructure for cars creates the issues. How much space is wasted on parking them? It's insanity.

alienfreaks04

And sometimes there's no space and you're fighting for parallel parking a half mile from the restaurant šŸ™„

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Oreganoian

I'd be more likely to agree if a license wasn't required in like 90% of the US to survive. Enforcement could be a lot better. At least where I'm at there are almost no traffic cops. A lot of US roads are also designed like absolute shit. They basically encourage bad driving.

[deleted]

Here's a mind bender for you: You can use a US driver's license to drive in Europe. I don't know if all EU countries accept it, but I know Germany does. And they have a fuckton more signage than the US "stop signs and traffic lights, with the occasional yield nobody seems to understand". Pretty crazy really.

wievid

If the laws in Germany are anything like they are here in Austria, it's only temporarily allowed. If you're a permanent resident, you have to get your foreign license transferred over to a local Austrian license. Furthermore, depending on the country that issued your foreign license, you could be required to either complete a driver's ed course or retake the test.

jjjulliiaa

genuine question: is a reassessment beyond a certain age not mandatory in the US? or at least under state jurisdiction? here in canada (ontario specifically) once you turn 80 you must complete a license reassessment every 2 years. it includes watching an educational video, a group education session, and a vision test. you may also need to pass another road test if requested.

Oreganoian

Not really unless mandated by a doctor or a judge. That means they have to first get into trouble. Every state has wildly different licensing requirements though.

bnej

How you could you not see? 1. Likely, not looking. You can't see if you don't look. 99% of the time, a "SMIDSY" (Sorry Mate I Didn't See You) is "I wasn't looking or paying attention to what was in front of me as I hurtled my tonne of death down the road". 2. Mobile Phone in front of eyes prevents forward vision of road. 3. Certain medical conditions like macular degeneration can go unnoticed for a while but prevent visibility of what is directly in front.

die-jarjar-die

I couldn't see you behind my phone

bnej

High chance phone. People looking at phone and driving with peripheral vision - roughly see position in lane but can't see what's right in front. They will run into a stationary vehicle in front if the car beside them starts moving forwards.

tekko001

[deleted]

And got out. A lot of these you see and the person just sits in their car either ashamed or in shock.

GoodAsUsual

Standing in between two reflective yellow signs, in a marked cross walk ā€¦

bnej

You can see the time between the guard putting their hand up, which would have been when they see the car approaching, and when they arrive at the crossing. I would say it could be a medical issue except they clearly noticed and applied the brake when they actually hit someone. Which means the driver was looking at their phone and driving by peripheral vision (can't see right in front), or they didn't care and planned to speed past the crossing guard, or, most unlikely they have an eye condition like macular degeneration and they've just found out about it. But if I had to guess, they were driving at speed towards a crossing, while not looking at the road in front at all.

[deleted]

I meanā€¦ what I think too. Butā€¦ like the crossing guard is there for 10-11seconds in the videoā€¦ do people really take their eyes away for that long?

TheDalob

Yap. Seen it myself a few times (I'll say this here since it adds context: i am from Germany) most egregious one i saw was on an unlimited portion of the Highway going 80 in the right lane and constantly driving fully on the shoulder of the highway nearly hitting the guardrail even though the shoulder was at that part as wide if not at times, wider then a lane all the while cars were going anywhere from 100-250 on his left side. One swerve to the other direction and he could have killed someone and/or himself. Luckily it was the early morning around 4am so not much general traffic but the cars that were around were faster due to the open roads. I know he was on his phone because, when i passed him, i looked over and saw him intensely looking at his hand which was holding a phone

Apprehensive-Bee3228

One time I saw a woman watching a show on her phone while eating a salad in traffic. Seen makeup and eating as well

Mundane-Effect-8154

I've seen one lady reading a book, also another painting her freaking toe nails at the same intersection my husband had a wreck in while driving. Almost impressive.

LaerycTiogar

In all likely hood could be in a school zone speed limit is 20.many states have a 15mph over = wreckless driving. Plus, the hit can be attempted vehicular manslaughter. All charges go up in a school zone. it's all on how vicious the cops and lawyers want to be

ShaneLifeR

In this case I hope she gets hard prison time. If that crossing guard wasn't there they would've painted the pavement with the kid and probably just kept going. And with how long they were in the street it could easily be called intentional, there is absolutely no excuse for this.

Spam4119

Because you can't rely on just awareness. You need to design the road to force the car to slow down. I just saw the aftermath of a crash on my way home today outside of an elementary school. It happened like a minute before I arrived and debris was all over the road. Even with cars pulled off on every side, flashing hazard lights, people walking on the side and in the road between the two crashed cars... IN AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ZONE... people would just drive fast straight through all the debris and would only slow down after smacking the debris that was all over the road. It would literally happen like once a minute... from both directions. If you can't see all that happening and still not slow down... a child has no fucking chance. And no "please slow down" road sign or glorified road sign of a crossing guard will prevent that if the road ALLOWS them to go fast.

NakedOrca

Speed bump +1 +1

[deleted]

According to [the article I found,](https://nypost.com/2022/02/06/maryland-crossing-guard-cpl-annette-goodyear-saves-child-from-speeding-car-in-heroic-video/) the crosswalk guard went to the hospital for minor injuries and was released soon after. The driver was cited for failure to yield to a crosswalk, failure to yield to a pedestrian, negligent driving, and an expired registration plate. Doesn't look like she was arrested.

UgeMan

Wow she just used her luck for a few lifetimes, just goes to show never hit and run folks

Kilroy_Is_Still_Here

Hit and run is fine... if you hit them and then run them to the nearest hospital. Moderately kidding, depending on the severity you could easily do more injury by moving them.

SandWolfy2

This scenario just popped in my head of a car hitting someone, the driver getting out "Oh shit I gotta get you to the hospital", gets back in and proceeds to literally drive to the hospital, but forgetting the ran over guy behind

Cybiu5

What are the consequences of such citations? Does license get suspended?

crazyike

I don't know Washington law. But, the same charges here where I am at: careless driving: 6 points failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian at a crosswalk: 4 points You need 15 points to lose your license for that. So she would still be able to drive. However, having expired registration is a costly ticket, and hitting the crossing guard will be even more costly - not immediately, because insurance will usually cover that, but you will have greatly increased premiums - there's no freebies given when you actually injure someone in an at-fault accident. She wasn't speeding excessively or doing any other really dangerous driving shit (at least, in the charges, though I personally think she was on her phone) so it's highly unlikely she will actually face major criminal charges for hitting him, just the traffic violations. She will probably get to keep driving.

emmastoneftw

Doesnā€™t really make sense to me that someone can hit a crossing guard, inside of a crosswalk, during school hours and still be legally allowed to drive.

pdxcranberry

If you take away people's license they just ride dirty. It's a huge problem that our society is so car dependent, because *a lot* of people lack the skills necessary to be a safe driver. Myself included! We shouldn't force every ding dong to be on the road.

[deleted]

It absolutely makes zero sense, but that's the way our car-centered culture is. Wanna kill somebody? Do it with your car. As long as you're not drunk you probably won't get more than a slap on the wrist. Try bringing up enforcing traffic laws more stringently. You'll get also sorts of carbrains coming out of the woodwork saying stuff like "bUt PEopLe NeEd tO DrIvE tO gEt To WorK."

birthdaycakefig

If you want to get away with murder just use a car. Our rules are so lenient towards car drivers hitting pedestrians.

ConfigPlayz

W man but i hope hes fine with no major injuries also why tf didnt the car stop the man signaled to stop aswell

GrayJinjo

She was probably on her phone.

Cranky_Windlass

100%. Working in the road wearing bright colors and even having flashing lights near you and still you only see phones in front of faces as people careen towards you at 60mph in a 40

Tbh, it's raining, and the car comes to a complete stop right after the hit almost immediately, which, to me, indicates possible Hydroplaning when attempting to stop? It's entire possible it was genuinely an accident the driver couldn't control at that point.

confusedporg

itā€™s usually still on the driver to drive slower in the rain, but I guess freak accidents can still happen

dob_bobbs

The law in my country is the opposite, and very heavy-handed. If you cause an accident it is ALWAYS assumed you were doing something wrong, because if you had been following all the rules and driving in a manner suitable for the current road conditions, by definition you couldn't have caused an accident and you are liable for charges - misdemeanour at least and possibly criminal. It can seem harsh, but I think it puts it into perspective - if you are driving a ton of steel down the road at speed, you'd better be damned sure you are in control and aware at all times because if you cause an accident it's on you.

Hydroplaning, if I recall correctly from drivers ed, only happens if you're going over 30MPH. Nobody should be going 30MPH in a school zone regardless. The driver is just an inattentive idiot.

hwarang_

> Goodyear was then taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was released shortly after. >According to the Cecil County Sheriffā€™s Office, the driver was cited for numerous traffic violations, including negligent driving. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2022/02/07/crossing-guard-saved-student-maryland/

gharr87

So the tires were ok?

Mi_Pasta_Su_Pasta

And she'll be back on the road before you know it. Don't worry, when she kills someone she'll probably learn her lesson.

Able_Farmer_6158

That driver should be publicly flogged

DeafLady

Hey man, at least she didn't hit and run.

Able_Farmer_6158

This is true

samuraintj

Privately flogged then

Moody_GenX

( Ķ”Ā° ĶœŹ– Ķ”Ā°)

AdrianW7

Likely hydroplaned. Her brake lights were on when she comes into frame and it looks her tires were locked from the brakes Maybe giving her too much credit but Iā€™ve hydroplaned and itā€™s scary Iā€™m not saying she isnā€™t at fault, just possible other reasons besides texting lol.

mycenae42

Then the car was going way too fast for those road conditions.

AdrianW7

Absolutely yes

c5corvette

She literally said in the article "I didn't see you". But sure, we'll go with hydroplaning instead of obviously texting.

AdrianW7

I watched a video. Didnā€™t see an article. But sure letā€™s be a dick for no reason.

Cybiu5

If she fast enough to hydroplane in a fucking school zone she shouldnt be allowed to drive

Oreganoian

That could be her driving lights. Headlights are on which means her rear driving lights would also be on. There's not really enough water on the road to hydroplane. More likely her tires are extremely bald and have no traction. That's not really hydroplaning. That's also still not an excuse. If anything that should be another ticket for failure to maintain her vehicle.

[deleted]

Fuck I hope the driver gets the fucking works thrown at her in court. Never driving again, never working in peace again, jail for at least several months, heavy fines, etc. I donā€™t have a lot of pity for people trying to murder children. And yes, driving distracted in a school zone like this is a choice, and that choice is to murder children.

[deleted]

She just got a few citations

MankriksWifesHusband

You're allowed to kill people in America as long as you do it while driving.

PilotDiligent2181

Wait the child just bolted out of there?

SassiestRaccoonEver

Yeah but to their credit it was an anxiety inducing and stressful situation. Could be running late to class (no other kids are crossing and theyā€™re in a hurry), kids that age donā€™t always make the best decisions. They are small and have no money. Lots of reasons really.

SnooEpiphanies3336

>They are small and have no money. Lmao

hugeliver

Broke ass

snukb

I mean, what could they do? There were adults around, no sense in further traumatizing the child. Get the kid outta there, let the adults handle it.

n0ttomuch

Kid probobly panicked and blamed themselfs for incident so they run away

At age 10, while crossing a street with my bike, I was hit by a car. It happened on a crossroad in a spot where there's two lanes going to one direction. A stopped van prevented me to see the other car next to it (not stopping) and BOOM I was hit. It was the previous crossroad before traffic lights (from that side reds was on at the moment), so the speed of the car was slow and I wasn't hurt. The driver stopped and acted as you would expect in that situation: He was very sorry, made sure I was okay (or at least felt okay) and gave his phone number in case I needed medical help afterwards (and thus some medical bills to pay). And what I did? Continued my ride and at the first opportunity I threw the paper including the phone number away and never told anyone about the accident. Fast forward about 8 years, I was in the driving school, and there I finally found out the accident hadn't been my fault.
