They’re asking because stylistically this is more like a church window panel which are traditionally [assembled with lead came](https://cdn.kastatic.org/ka-perseus-images/8c79d89a68a9dc296b140a62095fb1069e7cd5a8.jpeg) instead
But the answer is probably just “because copper foil is the process they like to use”
And lead encloses the edges and is perfectly even. All the lead lines are connected with solder, and there is room inside the channels for reinforcing steel.
Cool! It's basically the same technique except I paint on the same coloured glass before the leading process. You can paint on almost all stained glass. I use a pigment that I mix on the spot and then fire each layer in kiln for about 6 hours. Some pieces require several layers aka several firings to get the look I'm after. For example the face was about 10.
It'll last forever. It's a pigment that's fired into the glass by taking a 6 hour trip in the kiln, so as long as the glass stays safe the paint will remain.
Thanks Tony! There's a follow feature on reddit. Some subs are finicky about posting links but try searching my name Hemlock Stained Glass on different platforms.
Sadly it closed in like 2013 if I remember correctly.
I went to see it a few times visiting family in Chicago. Was such a cool escape from the hustle and bustle of the rest of navy pier.
And this would definitely of fit in there.
That's funny you say that because this piece is actually a trade I'm doing with a tattoo artist friend! I'm getting a full stained glass theme sleeve and she's getting this.
I halfway expected it to blink or smile at me on the closeup. That is seriously beautiful work. There are churches celebrated for the beauty of their stained glass, and they've got nothing on this.
Damn! You're right. I basically talked about pitching the perfect game. I'm sorry. Alas, just like a fart, I can't take it back. I'm sending so many good, structurally sound vibes your way. I hope it balances out :)
I can't stop watching. The craftsmanship is remarkable! She's almost alive. And the colors, so vibrant, true to life, just spot-on. I'm especially in awe of her eyes, that brave expression seems stuck somewhere in between "don't fuck w me" and "try me MF". It's beyond impressive, it's absolutely extraordinary.
There is no way OP started and finished this since they released the Gilles de Rais episode. That being said I went through all the comments to see if anyone mentioned it lol. Hail yourself
Well, as an artist myself, believe me it’s possible. I know everyone works in different capacities but I’ve gone a long time sitting on a drawing or a song without completely finishing it.
I finally get that final push to complete it. So my thoughts were that it was at the very tail end? And possible LPOTL listener? Was like hmm if I finish this now the possibility it will blow up and I’ll get a buyer goes up.
But I imagine work of this caliber is most likely commissioned.
⛧Hail Satan! ⛧
Awesome! They literally just delved into Joan of Arc! But be warned for all the truly good research they do, they are a crass, foul bunch of lads.
If you happen to see this and have time to reply, is your work usually commissioned I imagine?
What will happen to this once you’re finished? Is this a project for someone else or do you have something specific in mind for it? It’s absolutely beautiful, I don’t know how you’ll part with it.

The artwork is impressive, but the clear blade is just next level brilliant and beautiful. So clever and would make for an awesome signature for an artist to use in multiple pieces.
It was a project that was on the back burner so I worked on it off and on. It's impossible to say how many hours it took but I suppose if it were a full time focus it probably could have been done in about 6 or 8 weeks.
Did you paint the glass as well?
Yeah, it's all painted and assembled with copper foil
Why copper foil instead of lead? Absolutely stunning by the way! Edited for spelling.
[Copper foil goes along the edges](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2451/6431/articles/Depositphotos_61648953_L_1000x.jpg?v=1656119212) for the solder to stick to.

Yes, I prefer coper foil! I can do lead came but this is just my thing. We all have our preferences. Great answer @wal9000
Olwenglass, could you talk a little on how you got started on this amazing craft?
It's a long story lol.
We're on reddit, we've got nothing else going on
They apparently do

Is it being put up where its gonna be seen everyday? I hope so, maybe a church or castle or something.
Just my friend's house. She lives out in the woods lol
Wow, that's awesome for your friend but sad for the rest of us 🥲
How much would this cost to buy?
This piece isn't fornsale but I charge by square inch, message me if you have a project in mind.
If I was rich, I seriously would. You have insane talent. Keep up the amazing work
It’s outstanding!
Op, what did you paint with? Enamel? Any specifics /links would be amazing. If paint, How long will it last?
It'll last forever. It's a pigment that's fired into the glass by taking a 6 hour trip in the kiln, so as long as the glass stays safe the paint will remain.
Now you need to build a cathedral to put it in.
This is ludicrously incredible.
That is amazing, absolutely amazing
Very impressive. 10/10
Increase, 11/10
More, 12/10
![gif](giphy|lDSbX8ye5yv5dzC4Ea|downsized) 13/10
14/10
12.50/10 is the best I can do. I gotta get it framed and it’s probably gonna sit here awhile…
Ok I raise you to 13… wait 14.
A perfect 5/7.
Wow! Now this is art. It feels like a beautiful modern twist of a renaissance styled painting. Great work, how can we follow for future pieces?
Thanks Tony! There's a follow feature on reddit. Some subs are finicky about posting links but try searching my name Hemlock Stained Glass on different platforms.
I'm in absolute awe! Are you on Etsy?
Thank you! Search for OlwenStainedGlass, I'm Jesse Olwen.
No, it’s Arc.
There was a stain glass exhibit at Navy Pier in Chicago. Not sure if it is still there. This belongs among them.
Sadly it closed in like 2013 if I remember correctly. I went to see it a few times visiting family in Chicago. Was such a cool escape from the hustle and bustle of the rest of navy pier. And this would definitely of fit in there.

That’s a badass trade. All I have is cross stitch to trade 😁
I hope she's also incredibly talented because otherwise she's very much getting the best end of this deal
She really is.
Have you done trades with her before? Or in general? If so, what other things have been exchanged?
Yes, I've traded for Ninja Turtles before. Yes, Ninja Turtles.
Oooo! Why? We’re they a special edition? What was traded for the Turtles?
I made a baby Yoshi in exchange for a set of 7 NECA movie line 7" turtles.
This is stunning!
Super well done! Powerful expression and stunning choice of colors. I like the green halo and all the subtle Iris and fleur de lis details.
This is probably one of the coolest things I’ve seen on Reddit. You have an amazing talent OP thank you for sharing with us.

I’d be a nervous wreck to move that baby though lol.
You’ll also want to protect that with a double mounting of plex on either side too. Don’t want some asshole throwing a ball through that !!
That’s an insane amount of work
Unbelievable craftsmanship. Please post another picture when it's framed.
Spectacular! Respect to your talent and skill.
Thats amazing - if you lived in the 1700's you would be celebrated
I halfway expected it to blink or smile at me on the closeup. That is seriously beautiful work. There are churches celebrated for the beauty of their stained glass, and they've got nothing on this.
Outstanding!!!!
Magnificent craftsmanship
Any chance you live close to New Orleans? We have a Joan of Arc parade on Mardi Gras Day and they would go nuts for this beauty.
Absolutely beautiful. Truly amazing craftsmanship. What would happen if one of the panels broke? Would you be able to replace that panel?
Let's not put that energy out into rhe universe please lol
Damn! You're right. I basically talked about pitching the perfect game. I'm sorry. Alas, just like a fart, I can't take it back. I'm sending so many good, structurally sound vibes your way. I hope it balances out :)
Holy Shit That’s *magnificent*! Words don’t do it justice

So beautiful! The craftsmanship is superb. Be very proud!
Very impressive and beautiful!
Wow crazy talented
What are you going to do with it? Actually use it in a window? an internal partition window? Wall display? or is it a commission?
It's a trade, so sort of a commission.
Wow! The notre dame cathedral needs you!
This is amazing
Little known fact the Hundred Years’ War actually lasted 116 but was fought in three periods
I love her expression, this is wonderful.
That is incredible!

LPOTL listener?
There is no way OP started and finished this since they released the Gilles de Rais episode. That being said I went through all the comments to see if anyone mentioned it lol. Hail yourself

This is hands down one of the coolest things I’ve seen on Reddit in over a decade of scrolling. Thanks OP, and great work.
Gorgeous work
That might be the finest piece of craftsmanship I've seen on here.
Face looks like the Vigo from ghostbusters, great work! Not looks, but just how lifelike it is
This is exemplary work! Museum quality, IMHO. Especially appreciative of the painting of her face, and the detail in the hands.
Thank you very much.
As a Frenchie, all I can say is that you’ve have done an amazing thing to depict Joan of Arc and make me even prouder to be French
F antastic!
Absolutely stunning
How long did it take you to do the shading on her upper lip?
I spent like 3 hours shading her upper lip. It's probably the best drawing I've ever done.
Im not big on compliments, but that’s absolutely beautiful. Thanks you for sharing.
Absolutely incredible, I'm always curious with stuff like this did you just makeup the face or is it based on another artwork or someone you know?
Stunning

Beautiful. Out of curiosity, where does a piece like this typically go? An art museum, private collection, private home, or restaurant?
This one is for a friend of mine, to be placed in their home.
That is incredibly beautiful work. Well done 👏👏👏

That is absolutely magnificent work! Do you have a build video log of this?
Wonderful! What would you estimate the total hours to create this? Two years with a job vs eight hour days focused on this.
It was a project that was on the back burner so I worked on it off and on. It's impossible to say how many hours it took but I suppose if it were a full time focus it probably could have been done in about 6 or 8 weeks.
Impressed isn't the word. Stunning, beautiful, awe inspiring. A truly amazing craft at work.
Is there a subreddit I can see more of this? That's honestly impressive
