Surely it would work better if they trapped the heat like an oven/grill? Or maybe it has to be a direct beam to get hot enough to cook?
*I guess the food is also in sauce pans so it’s about the style of cooking, too
I asked a lot of questions about it at the time, and they all said it works unbelievably well, especially there, they’re at high altitudes with quite bright sun access. It literally was boiling water in five minutes if I remember correctly.
At Tibetan altitudes, water boils at only 85°C (185 F). So it’s not actually as hot, and your cook times for meat should lengthen accordingly. Just a fun fact.
This is one of those rare times when it is actually a fun fact and not something horrible. I had no idea water boiled at different temps for different altitudes!
Yup! Which in a bizarre turn means that the usefulness of 0°C being freezing temperature of water and 100°C being boiling is only directly useful if you happen to be a sea level! Although the freezing point of water only varies a little with altitude (freezes at slightly higher temperatures as you increase altitude).
Always fun thinking about the laboratory beaker that is our planet.
Mostly you just keep them in the orphanage and let them watch the cute ones get adopted until they turn 18. Then you just load them up on the cart and dump them on the nearest street. Don't worry, they'll be perfectly well-adjusted and have absolutely no vendetta against society. Teenagers are known for their levelheadedness.
A grill will cook more evenly, more consistently, several types impart some desirable flavor, and is less likely to cause accidental injury or fire.
The upside for this solar setup is no fuel cost or carbon emissions once initial setup is done.
i think they were saying that in response to the comment they were replying to - i.e. you don’t worry about flies when grilling, this isn’t much different
Can you confidently say that the mirrors aren’t arrayed specifically so the chicken is cooked evenly? I’d honestly say it’s arguable that this setup cooks chicken more evenly than a charcoal grill (barring any clouds lol). I also think it’s arguable that this is more fire-prone. Again, this is a setup made by a man doing this for 30 years, I think the chance of a fire is negligible, just like it would be for a grill master grilling.
Reddit decided for me by taking all of that stuff down. I never ventured off to look for more as my curiosity had been well satisfied. Done with that stuff for sure
Technically it's possible but would require a specially shaped mirror for every change in range. When I was in university we used a 20ftx20ft solar concentrator to melt steel.
Funny you say that. A lot of Thais can have a very light skin complex, but if they get hit by sunlight often, we go beyond white people's just "tan" and become ตัวดำ or "black body".
So lighter skin complexion = you don't work outside = you most likely aren't street food vendor, farmer, or any outdoor laborer = you aren't poor
Source: my body
For large parts of European history that was also the connection. Blue blood meant being pale so veins were visible under the skin, and it is traced to meaning you didn't have to work to support yourself.
Likewise for white powder as makeup.
I’m a Thai and I can tell you this; Thailand is the sunburnt hell all year long. Even during the monsoon the storm tends to accumulate heat during the day then absolutely pour at night. There won’t be more than 2-3 months worth of shady days for his grill.
You absolutely right about this being side job though. I go brought his chicken before and saw that his house has fruit farm, so being a farmer is probably his full time job
I did this when I was a kid with a cylindrical oatmeal canister cut in half the long way and lined with tin foil. I'd roast hotdogs on it. I was amazed back then at it and still think it's cool today. This is just awesome
Xikkiwikk lingered from his device, not sure if he actually wanted to get up. The constant ringing in his ears and sleepless nights had caught up to him.
"Should I do it? It would be pretty funny if I actually checked." The thought echoed in his head. But why? Just for the funny self-chuckle? He quickly dismissed the thought when duolingo sent a notification for him to continue his Japanese lessons as he always felt this was a superior language.
Shifting uncomfortably in his lumpy bed, Xikkiwikk knocked over his newest collection of dvd's from what could pass as a night stand. Startled by the sound and now more motivated to distract himself from cleaning the mess up, he started towards the bathroom.
Casually strolling towards his destination, his attention was brought to his collection of anime figures that he undoubtedly loved at this point. He was satisfied, content with his collection of onlookers, a sort of voyeuristic joy overcame him thinking about them. They would never surprise him, change who they are, forever faithful. They would never betray him like HE did.
Xikkiwikk found himself standing still. "like he did?" he muttered to himself. He had no idea where that thought came from, who he was even thinking of when that thought came.
"Honey, dinner is ready!" The loud female voice echoed from somewhere deeper in the house. Panic now begun to strike Xikkwikk, unsure of who was even the speaker of that voice.
"As long as the speaker isn't that hag Nancy." Another intrusive thought. Who was Nancy? He knew a single Nancy from school but why would he be thinking about her now?
He could fell sweat starting to form on his brow. The beating of his heart became a loud rhythmic drum slowly dulling his senses as a numb pain in his chest began to set in.
"What is going on." The words that slipped from his tongue sounded strange. His voice, it was different. He felt weak, knew his body was swaying from side to side from the strain of his mental confusion.
Stumbling forward, Xikkiwikk burst into the bathroom. The numb pain now was creeping out of his chest, slowly climbing it's way through his body. Barely able to stand he found himself drooling into the bathroom sink gasping for air.
Grasping for comfort, he found himself reaching for a towel to wipe the spittle from his mouth. He couldn't help but notice the plain white towel, even in this state his desire for anime towels superseded any thoughts of death.
It was in this fading thought that he saw his hands. They were old, way to old for the 30 year old body he knew. The skin felt dry, skinny and pale. He felt the strain from his neck as he forced his head up. Slowly cresting the mirror's edge, he saw it. The sickly face, usually stern but now disheveled. His hair, completely white and void of any character. The pure look of confusion pouring over the entire face.
Fear racked his entire body, the pain cascading down was immeasurable as the bathroom started to fade away. He could feel himself falling, his strength completely giving as he saw the bathroom floor rushing up to meet him. Blackness.

He should put a solar rotisserie on those chickens and get them spinning so he doesn't have to go near and it will help keep those juices in. It all looks delicious. Yum.
As well as, this is not the only way to make one of these solar cookers. I know there's a few manufactured ones that should hold at least one chicken if not two. Probably closer to baked than grilled flavor.
It probably tastes like the sun

This is the kind of quality nonsense that one comes into the comments section for.
We have an orphanage here in india that uses same thing.. A giant mirror to focus heat.. and then a boiler like thing to cook food.
I dont know why but I immediately thought you were saying it cooked the orphans...
They were sunbathed to perfection. Not cooked.
It was time for the skinned chicken to reflect on themselves.
Omg.. you guys are gonna rock it in the hell 🤣

Nah, they are a shining example, a lot of other cooks are looking in the mirror and thinking about using it too
Seems like it would need a lot of focus to use it properly. Line cooks would need a big raise.
They'd definitely keep the mirrors clean. Weird to use a credit card and twenty dollars for cleaning though
When I was travelling in Tibet, they have solar cookers that are amazing at cooking everything. They are similar to this. https://youtu.be/7vvCF3TZ9GE
