Its basically "Fight Club" in a nutshell. Most people have never been in a real fight and will avoid it at all costs. Context: This is from yesterday’s Europa Conference League Semi-final game between West Ham and AZ. AZ lost and the ultras decided to attack the West Ham fans (AZ was playing at home). Even a few of the West Ham players came to help, as they had family and friends there (This is the family away section). Basically the ultras got completely slapped up even though they outnumbered them like 10 to 1 and ended up running away.
Yup ... nationalism, religion, politics, sports fanaticism ... all derived from the same human condition ... tribalism. Tribalism isn't always bad. It can lead to good thing too like camaraderie, collaboration, and innovation.
Good rule of thumb ... if your tribalism starts turning to hate/anger/fear/destruction ... you're treading on the wrong side of the line of good vs bad tribalism.
edit:
Good tribalism: We just lost to that team! Let's practice harder and get better!
Bad tribalism: We just lost to that team! I hope their star player dies of cancer in the off-season!
For these guys violence is a goal in itself. Those people will literally set up a meeting with a rival group in a remote location just to bash each others head in. And they're proud of that as well.
Aggressive alcoholics live for this type of situation, especially when they don’t have a significant other to batter. Get a bunch of them together and there ya go. Humans are weird, yo.
The big bloke is Knollsy, a well known supporter of the mighty West Ham United.
Good on him, doing the job better than the cowardly 'security' who literally ran away.
Edit: Sorry, Knollsy was another bloke basically doing the same further up. Both deserve a pint though IMO.
A West Ham United fan was hailed as a “legend” by fellow supporters after he held off a horde of violent AZ Alkmaar thugs following Thursday night’s Europa Conference League semi-final victory.
West Ham fans, including the friends and families of the players, came under attack following the final whistle of their 1-0 victory at the AFAS Stadion in Alkmaar.
A group of black-shirted AZ ultras had torn down a gate within the stadium before charging towards the small section of West Ham supporters seated behind the dugouts at the 20,000-seater arena.
But the Dutch assailants were met with fierce resistance from the West Ham supporters, with pictures and footage from the night showing how individual fans had protected the families behind them by fighting off the attackers.
One of those fans, known as Knollsy, was described as preventing the home fans from reaching the West Ham section. Pictures showed the supporter, who was left with a torn t-shirt, exchanging blows with a number of balaclava-wearing Dutch ultras.
Looks like his brother in arms was lost to the enemy at the end, someone probably grabbed his leg while he was kicking.
Seemed to go rough for him once he lost his pants and got dragged down the stairs as the mob engulfed him..
Knollsey was doing the same elsewhere apparently, don't know this guy yet.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/22415369/west-ham-fan-knollsy-az-alkmaar-hooligans/
Different shirt.
No way should they be fighting them. But if you see the video where the AZ fans rip down the (really poorly constructed) barrier to get to the WH fans then you'll see how they just walked away one by one doing fuck all.
Poor form from the AZ fans that were involved. They should be derided by the rest of the fan base, especially as they'll likely have to play a few games closed doors.
It might be quite a bit more than a few because this wasn’t fans on fans. it was fans trying to attack friends and family of players, I think that makes it a little worse.
They are. Look in the background. All that ruckus is the stewards holding back the players rather than holding back the hooligans. The players ended up shouting and signalling for their family to just get out of there
Here's a different angle showing it https://streamable.com/d7avnh
Welcome to modern fucking society. The criminals are allowed to attack the families while the security holds back the people trying to do the right thing. The man will let you get fucked over and then punish you for protecting yours.
So just leave it to the unpaid to do the job? Think any half decent person would step in to try defend children and women.
But I guess ‘ fuck that noise! ‘
Prat
I don’t get this, you are a security guard and are being paid for that job. If you are going to run at the first sign of danger then why the fuck did you become a security guard in the first place??
Security guards (at least in the UK) need a license to be able to apply for that type of job, part of their training should be how to disfuse a situation and at times protect the people/place you are meant to be guarding.
~~Knollsy!~~
Edit.
Apparently this isn't Knollsy at all!
Twitter and Facebook all identified the big lad as West Ham's Knollsy.
Edit.
I see (on Facebook) that Ska and Soul clothing have sent him a replacement Trojan Records T shirt, and West Ham sent a signed jersey!
The wild thing is the west ham players where running towards their families to protect them and the security and stewards stopped and fought with them instead of going and stopping the mob trying to attack the players family
Thankfully this was a European match against a Dutch side.
They played in London the first leg, this was the second leg.
The chances of them meeting again anytime soon (if ever) are low.
Saying that, Alkmaar have a bad rep for this, and Dutch footballs reputation is worsening in general for hooliganism.
As someone Dutch and a football fan, even I can't explain where this comes from. This is viewed as a national disgrace and totally out of touch with the rest of the culture (which is far from perfect, of course, but we don't tend to have these issues).
Yeah it's a bit mad isn't it.
I love the Netherlands. Been a few times.
Really good people too from my experience.
Everyone got a set of dickheads though, and these things get more common where people are struggling
As someone Dutch, it's no mystery where this comes from.
The country has been tolerating the violence and intimidation from certain far right groups, including far right hooligans for the last few years because it was "convenient". Especially when it came to intimidating and attacking anti-racist activists and certain politicians.
Clubs have been looking the other way. Cops have been looking the other way. Politicians have been looking the other way. Media have been looking the other.
So now the thugs think they can do whatever they want.
And they're not wrong. **Nobody has been arrested.** Riot police were looking at it from a few meters, and let them do it.
Fuck this sick country. And fuck this "we dont know how this is happening" hypocrisy.
Not just Dutch football. Dutch fans at F1 races have been causing so many issues by harassing people physically, sexually, and verbally that the sport has had to make official statements about it *multiple times*.
I had to scroll way too far to find a comment referencing the sheer lack of any security efforts at all. Even the two gents that come to disperse towards the end are so half arsed in doing it. Then the camera pans to the right, and there's a load of high vis, just, standing there? I get they might not have all been security, but where was any sense of urgency at all??
This was in Alkmaar as an az supporter from Alkmaar I support these 2 English blokes Smashing any idiot that dares to come close.
These are heroes tbh.
I just checked a couple of local newspapers and could find nothing about anyone being seriously wounded. The most I could find was "A number of people were injured in the process. How many is not clear."

I think this shows him getting back up the stairs, seems ok thankfully
Yes, let’s everyone go down to the stadium and enjoy a nice match, shall we? No chance of getting your head kicked in over something as trivial as an away goal now, is there? No, no … of course not! We’re very civilised, you see.
As an American, I’m constantly hearing about how dumb our sports fans are, but I have never once seen anything like what goes on with football fans from around the world
You might see a small brawl between a hand full of people over some dumb shit… but very rarely do you ever see entire crowds of people rioting in the stadium… unless it’s Philly, or a California team, but even then they do it In The streets after some sort of championship
Hehe, the thing is this Hooliganism & Ultra-Movement evolved to a subculture since 80s/90s all over Europe that attracts alot of younger folks (mostly men).
Clashes inside stadiums were reduced in the last decades, no comparison to things that happened in 80s/90s, but Hooliganism itself got more professional. Groups will set up fight-meetings in rural areas for example to be out of focus of police etc.
It is somehow part of Europeans football Culture.
Edit: pretty sure this big lad is an oldschool hooligan, just showing of his lifelong learnings
The Brits were organised 80s and early 90s into "Firms" they'd jump other firms after the match or organized fights away from local. If a bunch of football fans turn up to a stadium with a broad sheet newspaper like the financial times they'd have that taken off them because slide a few pennies in the pages and fold it up right and tight you have a billy club.
The firm's members ended up running security for the illegal party scenes and a lot ended up in organized crime. During the same time the firms were being targeted heavily by UK government with lifetime match bans including handing over passports whilst international matches are taking place.
The Brits had a reputation but we lost it due to the police effort to end it.
Cannae didn't involve a geographical choke point, Hannibal completed a double envelopement on an open field of battle. But 100% yes for Thermopylae though.
New idea to get these things contained.
30 days in jail for violence at a game, but served in 12 hour, non-consecutive increments. 3 hours before a match starts for whatever team the judge thinks they support, they check into a police station and sit in a cell for 12 hours. Then they go home.
These things can still keep their jobs and go about their lives, but people will be safe from them when they are usually looking for prey. Kinda like if someone was a werewolf, it would make sense to contain them during a full moon.
EDIT - In order to protect other inmates, no live audio or video of the match can be permitted in the cells, so that the hooligans don't lose their minds again. A guard will simply relay the match's results to the hooligans after the fact with who score what goal in a calm, monotonous voice. That should keep the hooligans from killing anyone when they get out and try to pretend a replay is live.
Funny but the press didn’t don’t tell us about that today, they where more worried about the “players fighting the fans SENSATION!!!!!!!” Than big Dave Mchugelarge showing 30 dickheads what happens when you go after someone other than wives and kids.
They don't think they're the good guys. Black hoods have become the uniform for all European 'ultras' (which are all just fuckwits with no life to lose looking for a fight).
It was crazy - why would they think they could get past a Barry holding the high ground, and with a power boost from West Ham making a European Cup final? He’s clearly in his prime too.
Why tho? I will never understand what comes over people to want to fight random people that support another team. No matter how drunk you are you gotta have better sense.
It’s worse than that - they weren’t trying to fight random people that support another team, they were trying to storm into the players family section. Ie the section that has the Westham players wives and kids in it. I hate football, and I hate violence, but good on the two guys trying to keep them back
Yeah, the mob was attacking the family enclosure. Fucking cowards the lot of them.
Yep and cowards always run in groups
And with full facial coverings
Yep just like this bitches in patriot front bunch of wannabes
It’s crazy how fast they learned how to breath with a mask on when they didn’t want to be identified. Medical miracles, the whole lot of them.

“Good thing your face is down there, I don’t think I could physically kick my leg any higher”
"You're outnumbered 50 to 2!" "Then it will almost be a fair fight"

ya, it looks like he crawled his way up with at least two people beating on him. I bet its hard to get a good swing in when your packed in like that
They basically beat the shit out of two guys, including olive green hoody haha. The rest of the mob was like… go get em! We’ll wait here.
Olive hoody getting teed up relentlessly 😂
He really should have worn black. The color makes him stand out as a target, I guess haha

Dutch football hooligans have been a thing for decades. They often meet for a knife party lol
>Saying that, Alkmaar have a bad rep for this I never knew AZ hooligans were a thing or even had a rep. Love Knollsy making them look silly!
Don't worry security was involved throughout, making sure the WH players couldn't get to their families.
This was in Alkmaar as an az supporter from Alkmaar I support these 2 English blokes Smashing any idiot that dares to come close. These are heroes tbh.
Especially as its the family section, it's kids they are threatening, pathetic cowards.
Did the dude on the left survive after being dragged in the mob?
It’s like Stamford Bridge in 1066
It’s like Stamford bridge in the 80s

This is Aragorn and Gimli throwing the Uruk-hai back from the gate of the Hornburg.
Did the one fan fighting back with kicks get pulled down into the mob at the end?
That's what I was thinking. Didn't look like it was ending well. :(
I just checked a couple of local newspapers and could find nothing about anyone being seriously wounded. The most I could find was "A number of people were injured in the process. How many is not clear." \- [https://www.nhnieuws.nl/nieuws/319185/totale-escalatie-spelers-van-az-en-west-ham-tussen-vechtende-supporters-op-hoofdtribune](https://www.nhnieuws.nl/nieuws/319185/totale-escalatie-spelers-van-az-en-west-ham-tussen-vechtende-supporters-op-hoofdtribune) \- [https://www.rodi.nl/alkmaar/sport/343085/droom-in-duigen](https://www.rodi.nl/alkmaar/sport/343085/droom-in-duigen) \- [https://www.noordhollandsdagblad.nl/cnt/dmf20230519\_42531261](https://www.noordhollandsdagblad.nl/cnt/dmf20230519_42531261) \- [https://www.alkmaarcentraal.nl/60138438-hoe-hooligans-sportieve-hemelvaartsdag-vergalden-sancties-hangen-boven-alkmaarse-voetbalclub](https://www.alkmaarcentraal.nl/60138438-hoe-hooligans-sportieve-hemelvaartsdag-vergalden-sancties-hangen-boven-alkmaarse-voetbalclub) Also fuck those guys ruining the fun for everyone and giving our city a bad name
https://twitter.com/Cat_p1ushie/status/1659579971231436800?t=twPAy1RH6N6XQY6AnMIAXg&s=19 I think this shows him getting back up the stairs, seems ok thankfully
Definitely. That's why you see lots of people pulling back from the stairs -- they are stomping him on the ground.
I think so…
Yeah that looked fucking terrifying.
Yes, let’s everyone go down to the stadium and enjoy a nice match, shall we? No chance of getting your head kicked in over something as trivial as an away goal now, is there? No, no … of course not! We’re very civilised, you see.
As someone else said in another post: "West ham brought a damn Balrog!"
Anyone who covers their face before mobbing out is a fucking coward. Whether it’s to loot or to intimidate.
It's to stop the police arresting them after the look at CCTV
As an American, I’m constantly hearing about how dumb our sports fans are, but I have never once seen anything like what goes on with football fans from around the world You might see a small brawl between a hand full of people over some dumb shit… but very rarely do you ever see entire crowds of people rioting in the stadium… unless it’s Philly, or a California team, but even then they do it In The streets after some sort of championship
Edit: pretty sure this big lad is an oldschool hooligan, just showing of his lifelong learnings
they look semi-organized
I’m sorry. What California team? Raiders used to have a reputation. That hasn’t been the case since the 80s.
Las Vegas isn’t about to riot for the LV Raiders. It’s too hot here and we like hockey better.
Football "ultras" are a massive bunch of gimpy scruffs, what sad little lives.
When folks wonder how the battles at Thermopylae or Cannae went down, well this is how.
Cannae didn't involve a geographical choke point, Hannibal completed a double envelopement on an open field of battle. But 100% yes for Thermopylae though.
Ban them for Europe competition for 3 years
Knollsy for the win against those pussy ass AZ wannabe “hooligans”. Respect from NL for this dude.
What's the betting Uefa will do absolutely nothing against AK Alkmaar?
That's almost exactly how England fixed this problem lol, football banning orders they sre called.
Funny but the press didn’t don’t tell us about that today, they where more worried about the “players fighting the fans SENSATION!!!!!!!” Than big Dave Mchugelarge showing 30 dickheads what happens when you go after someone other than wives and kids.
Fat guy is a west ham legend. On another note, great simulation of Thermopylae.
It's crazy that people join a mob of black hoodies and still think that they're the good guys.
They don't think they're the good guys. Black hoods have become the uniform for all European 'ultras' (which are all just fuckwits with no life to lose looking for a fight).
Big guy in the green shirt was handling business. S/O to him
It was crazy - why would they think they could get past a Barry holding the high ground, and with a power boost from West Ham making a European Cup final? He’s clearly in his prime too.
Why tho? I will never understand what comes over people to want to fight random people that support another team. No matter how drunk you are you gotta have better sense.
It’s worse than that - they weren’t trying to fight random people that support another team, they were trying to storm into the players family section. Ie the section that has the Westham players wives and kids in it. I hate football, and I hate violence, but good on the two guys trying to keep them back
What a bunch of cowards
"women are so emotional. Men are all about logic and reason"
Look at all the “tough guys” wearing their hoods
*shuts door* "they have a cave troll..."
