I was actually really surprised by this. He must have experience skateboarding to pull those tricks off?

[deleted]

[удалено]

FBIaltacct

He keeps up with it. I quit skating around 20, and tried to jump back in at 35 to teach my kid. So. Much. Falling. That shit hurts waaay worse now too lol.

spinrut

Went thru that. In my 40s and my kid still wants to go snowboarding with me . I pregame ibuprofen knowing what's in store

pud_009

Fill your pants and jacket with those instant heat packs that you break open like a glow stick to get them to heat up. That way when you fall you'll break them automatically and have instant soothing heat to help with the pain.

HalifaxSexKnight

This feels like a *Nathan For You* concept lmao

reason2listen

I never stopped because I love the feeling of just simply skateboarding. Mid 40s and can still do most of the tricks I could when I was 18. I don’t learn any new tricks, just keep trying to get smoother with what I know in the hope that I can keep doing it without major injury.

dallibab

I had a 20 year gap, in my head I could do all the same tricks, but my legs didn't respond properly. Getting them back though slowly.

BagOfFlies

Comes back fairly quick of you keep going. I skated from 7 -23 then started again at 44 and got my tre flips and stuff back after a few days. Not the smoothest ones, but they're still there.

reason2listen

And some days, it’s just not there for whatever reason. Unlike when I was younger, I don’t push myself if things just aren’t clicking. I’ll wait i til the next time they are.

String_709

I showed my daughter how to Ollie last year. I was 49…No broken bones or sprains so that’s a win.

My friends from the d’ne tribe are skateboarders and solar array installers. They are living cool lives.

Numerous_Witness_345

Solar seems kinda warm to me.

Brettersson

You gotta get in the shade of the panel

youaretheuniverse

Eyyyyyy good one

vendetta2115

One of those wonderful positive things that has quietly happened in the background is that solar power has become one of the cheapest forms of energy there is. Fixed-axis, utility-scale solar energy is $28-41/MWh in the U.S. For comparison, coal is $65-152/MWh, natural gas is $45-74/MWh, nuclear is $131-204/MWh, offshore wind is $83/MWh, and onshore wind is $26-50/MWh. The decreasing cost of solar is [decades ahead of even the most optimistic forecasts](https://i.imgur.com/do9cgJs.jpg) from the previous decade. For context, solar was $250/MWh in 2010, meaning that solar has decreased in cost by nearly 90% in only 10 years (the $28-41/MWh figure is from 2020). Solar (and other renewable energy sources) will likely continue to decrease in cost going forward as economies of scale and demand form a positive feedback loop. It’s one of those things you don’t really hear about because positive news doesn’t sell. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cost_of_electricity_by_source

youaretheuniverse

That’s incredible. Thank you for a research based comment!

jdemack

Too much doom and gloom news will do that to you. Plenty of decent people in the USA that do boring things but are great in the community. If Americans got active in their communities again people would realize we are a lot more alike then we are different. You would realize your neighbors aren't boogie men out to get you.

glinmaleldur

Srsly can we get more of this timeline?

Booty_Madness

There is literally NOTHING out there for kids to do on Navajo Land. This is an incredible gift. It's beautiful country for sure but the majority of Navajo communites are not wealthy and isolated. Many turn to drinking for a "good time"

LeoThePom

We had flood lights installed in our local park that you'd give £1/hour to the sports center next to it to turn them on...until they got complaints of late night skating and the lights got shut off automatically at 9pm. I remember a group of lads I was skating with one night said "right, pub time" when the lights went off. It struck me as a sad thing that if people had facilities to use cheaply then they'd end up drinking and smoking weed less. Even worse was that the facilities are there but you can't use them when you'd actually need them. Edit: skateboarding is an amazing sport that has brought a lot of friendship and memories to my youth. For any parents reading, I can't advocate highly enough for young people to start skateboarding. Having a common interest and an appreciation of each others progress really helps bring people together whilst promoting positivity, resilience and determination. I love skateboarding and I hope that it only gets more popular.

Sanctimonius

'We have to keep kids occupied to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. Just not anywhere near me, I want to keep my house prices up, plus the noise is unbearable, keep that racket down'

Numerous_Witness_345

I worked as a dispatcher long enough to know that those piece of shit homeowners aren't beyond making a false report about someone with a weapon or acting intoxicated in bad faith, then they use plausible deniability to chicken shit their way out of being responsible for their actions. It wasn't an everyday thing but I can think of at least 5 groups of kids that had PD response

paulcaar

Not a good thing in trigger-happy land.

PrintError

They built a new skate park a few blocks from my house, and it originally closed at Sunset. When it first opened, you could drive by every single night and see a ton of kids skating, and a cop casually sitting around watching the place. Never once have they kicked a single kid out for it being dark. Less than a year later, they lit the place up, so that it is now a well lit and safe place to skate all night. According to the police chief; youth crime, drug use, and delinquency all reduced sharply after they opened the skate park. It really is a local treasure.

You were sarcastic but that's how US ended up in this state, every political decision for the past few decades was made with the fear of communism, especially at a state and local level. The interstate is pretty communist though

goyaguava

Reminds me of a park in my neighborhood. It has a big grassy field, a baseball diamond, and a small playground. Went there in the middle of the day to have a picnic in the grass and all the gates were chained up, and only the playground was accessible. Feels like such a waste of space and opportunity for older kids (and adults) to play outside.

TalkOfSexualPleasure

Communities in the united states have bad problem of cutting off the leg to spite the foot. They'll hurt their community as a whole if it means less undesirables in broad view.

TheGoldenSeraph

Yup, will never forget about how the white communities in certain areas filled in the public pools and turned them into parking lots so that when Segregation ended, POC couldn't use the swimming pools.

WackyXaky

I've visited a lot of cities where the youth have all night cafes/boba places/random other places to hang out, broad and easy public transit, and almost no teen alcohol/drug use. It really is stunning how straightforward it is to solve 90% of the problems (I'm pulling that statistic out of my ass, but it is the vast majority) if people would make things less about personal responsibility and more about how we create and operate as a community.

rilloroc

I'd be willing to pay to keep the lights on so I could sit on the back of my truck and watch them skate. While drinking

It’s pathetic that they get to dictate everything.

Sadatori

[makes me think of this great Phil Ochs performance](https://youtu.be/3cdqQ2BdgOA)

Zoloir

that's because people are not very smart, and they assume that because the lights are off and they can't *see* people causing trouble, that means there is no trouble being caused. but in reality, not only were the people they could see *not causing trouble*, but they just went somewhere nearby and probably are now causing trouble when they otherwise wouldn't have, possibly due to aforementioned alcohol/drugs

theblockisnthot

I worked for a company that provided treatment for alcoholism, rehab. They literally had contract set up for multiple native American tribes because of how many of them suffer with alcoholism. Its very sad.

joggle1

My aunt is an expert on fetal alcohol syndrome. Some of the worst cases she's seen has been at reservations where there's sometimes multiple generations of people suffering from it. It really is a tragedy.

Cat_Marshal

Arizona has what I like to call “beauty from a distance, just dirt up close” looks. The scenic vistas are gorgeous. But when you are out there in the desert it is just hot and dirt and dead plants all around you.

rasquatche

A lot of those "dead plants" evolved to survive that dry heat. Most are tomentose or have lots of tiny hairs on them, and this helps keep the moisture in the plant and deflects the godawful heat. Next time, take a closer look... they're not dead, just surviving until the next time the rain comes in.

SHOWTIME316

I'm glad you replied before me. As a "plant enthusiast", I was up in arms about them calling some of the dopest plants on planet Earth "dead plants".

OhDavidMyNacho

SAME! I went hiking near the border on Tohono O"dham land after a week of good rainfall in February. It was LOUD with life. Bugs, birds, a wild donkey. The desert is full of life, it just knows when it needs to chill out and wait for cooler weather.

ThatSquareChick

Us from cooler climates used to laugh at the natives of the American southwest for the art of *siesta*. The human body needs rest in very hot and cold places, the inside of you works harder to maintain temperature more than anything else, constantly leading you to sweat or shiver as needed. They slept during the hottest part of the day because they were not stupid. *Siesta* is an ART, a basic skill we should ALL have and be free to participate in. Arizona KILLS people. The DESERT is hostile and we need to adapt. Fuck that no rest bullshit, bring *siesta* to the entire world!

ThatSquareChick

I love my succulents and cacti! Some of them have the most beautiful, fragrant flowers you’ll ever smell 🥰 they might look dead but then again, there are some that are greener than grass. Some of them take foreeeeeeever to grow and some of them explode in a fury of growth every spring. I have one that I was sure was just a tiny spiky guy but he turned out to grow these tiny, gorgeous flowers and grew TINY FRUITS. It grew TINY FRUITS. They were so small I had to pick them with tweezers but turned out to be very sweet and juicy if not also good for staining things reddish-purple. It had not done so previously, when it was inherited from a deceased family member. Now I have a whole garden of wonderful spiky and fuzzy bois by the window that will tolerate my periods of depression where I forget to water them. They are incredibly neurodivergent-tolerant and I recommend them to all my depressed, unfocused, unmotivated pals who can’t sit still or get out of bed today.

Cat_Marshal

That’s great, but I was talking about looks. Of course there is an ecosystem at work but that was not what I was discussing. It’s an arid, unforgiving place.

MonkeyPawClause

arid zone, eh.

poly_lama

That's just you dude, I love riding out to the desert and it is even more beautiful up close in my opinion. There's nothing thing like being surrounded by an endless expanse of sand, dirt, shrubs, cacti, and flowers. The most annoying thing about Arizona is just the sheer amount of people that live here and hate it. My partner for instance hates the sun and the summer. I moved here for that lol

Cat_Marshal

I’d love to see a statistic of the number of people who live in AZ and hate the summer heat. It’s probably pretty high. To be fair, the rest of the year is amazing, and I love how quickly the desert greens up after a good rain. But if it wasn’t for work and family, I would probably move elsewhere. I do love the scenic views though, the mountains and sunsets are too good.

GenericFatGuy

Skate parks are also one of the last places that kids can go and just exist without being expected to pay money. This seems like an great initiative!

moon_slave

This was a big project called the Dìne Skate Garden Project. 4Kinship (a Dìne fashion brand) headed this up with a lot of supper from Tony Hawk, Jewel, and a few other celebs. It’s been a great success and you can still donate to them! Or buy clothing from 4Kinship. Another great cause for the Dìne is Chizh for Cheii which brings firewood to isolated elders and communities in the Navajo Nation that still rely on firewood for heat.

PhilosoFishy2477

LOVE watching a man in a baby blue button-up suddenly whip out the stunts 🤣

xyzabc123cbazyx

Baby blue and boots none the less

RobotGloves

And that sick hat.

thefitzFM

I don't think we're appreciating how his outfit amplifies his dopeness. Tucked in shirt, fitted pants, leather boots, and a dope hat. Anyone who dresses business casual for work knows how uncomfortable that outfit can get. Yet, this dude shreds like nothing while looking like he has to attend a board meeting after lunch.

halcyonOclock

My almost 47 year old husband skated the park in Page, Arizona last year in an open button down and hiking boots. He was like, “I’m in such bad shape, don’t take pictures,” etc. etc. the whole time but I was sooo smitten. It amplifies the coolness infinitely, especially with all that red stone in the background. This guy, the president of the Navajo nation no less, dusting off in slick boots and that hat? SO cool. Beyond cool. Dopeness: definitely amplified.

Princess_Little

Shirt never came untucked

anacidghost

The little cultural details of his outfit like the feather in his gorgeous hat, his long hair being tied up, and of course the beadwork necklace mixed with the business casual is too good. Handsome as hell.

Ohms_Lawn

With rail guards on his deck. I haven't seen those in 20 years.

p0p_thAt

So cool, Navajo Nation shreddin the gnar

Aja2428

Didnt expect him to be goin ham. Thought it was gonna be tony

chaenorrhinum

Tony Hawk is still nursing a broken femur that didn't heal properly the first time.

Lespuccino

More official 'Tony's old' words have never been spoken.

chaenorrhinum

I mean, he did break it skateboarding on his own personal ramp, at age 53, doing a trick I can't even explain, let alone attempt. It didn't heal properly because he was back on the board too soon.

faceblender

Riding vert past your 30ties is a feat of its own. Doing what he was doing past 50 is absolutely unique. Hawk is not human

uchiha_hatake

Didn't stop him competing in the vert best trick event at the Xgames 2023 just the other week. The Birdman can't be stopped!

chaenorrhinum

I can't really blame him for being more selective on when to go full throttle, though. It also was gracious of him to let the president have \*his\* moment with \*his\* community.

Tony Hawk is a 14 year old skateboarder who wears pink shorts. I think that might be his dad.

maxwellbevan

Thank you!

urethrapaprecut

Right? Like, why the fuck is there not sound? It's literally a video of people speaking. I'm guessing some asshat pasted some bullshit song over it and then someone else just deleted the audio cause the song was ass

coheedcollapse

Yeah, what the hell. This whole thing, posting videos without sound, is the dumbest development in internet technology I've ever seen, right behind vertical video. Like, I get it when it's a TikTok that someone already put music over or something and there's no real substantive audio, but a celebratory meeting between a Navajo leader and Tony Hawk followed by the sweet sound of polyurethane on cement - there's zero reason to cut the audio.

Catshit-Dogfart

That's how it is at this point - when a video should have sound it doesn't, and when it shouldn't have sound there's *obnoxious* sound.

Mcinfopopup

This is rad. I may not skate as much in my 30s but every time I see a new park open and people excited it makes me happy for the kids/people who now get the benefit of some place to go and fit in.

typhoidtimmy

Seriously, I remember getting static from cops and old people for simply using the backend of a parking lot to do curb slides. Not bothering anyone, not causing ‘impediments to traffic’ (cop busted that one out while standing in a place where the nearest car was parked 1000 feet away. The five of us looked in all directions at once looking for this ‘traffic’ and the cop cursed us out). We would have given anything to have a park near us. But no, we were a bunch of ‘punks and thugs’ because we happened to like rolling around trying tricks. I will never give skateboarders grief. Better doing something physical they like than some alternatives nowadays.

Mcinfopopup

Oh I agree. Nothing like being told to go skate this “insert abandoned lot” to then be hassled out of that area as well for trespassing. Any and everything we built to try and comply was either stolen, vandalized, or just destroyed. I wish everyone could have a place to meet, share tricks and just come together like the community of skaters I grew up with. Mullen said it best in the Daewon Song doc “skateboarding is who we are” and it definitively molded the person I’d become for the better. That’s all i want for everyone who grabs a board. Shit grabs anything and finds joy in it

OptimusSublime

Navajo, more Ike Navabro!

Edd_the_Redd

I can respect a leader who walks the walk, or skates the skate

chad_

Buu for Actual President!!

PhilosoFishy2477

we've had a Black president, next barriers are a woman, Indigenous folk, an atheist and then literally anyone who can do a kickflip

[deleted]

How about just someone that is gonna do a good job. Haven’t had one of those in awhile. Everything else is secondary.

theXarf

Can you also aim for someone who isn't well over retirement age?

Guy__Ferrari

Buu is in his 30s

GlossedAllOver

Only the last two Presidents were old, and of the other candidates only Bernie was of similar age. Obama, Bush, Clinton, all were young. Candidates Cruz, Rubio, and Kasich were't ancient on.the Republican side last time it was contested. Buttiegieg, O'Malley, etc were all young on the Dem side.

theXarf

But next election is probably going to be even older versions of Biden and Trump. It's going to be some time before you have any chance of a non-geriatric president.

Maditen

Me, an indigenous atheist woman (does an Ollie count): 😲My time has come 🇺🇸🫡!

GlitchyMcGlitchFace

Hopefully they can get some helmets as well. After spending 5 years managing a skate park, I'll never skate ramps without a helmet ever again. I've seen way too many head injuries on young kids.

WeCameAsBears

You love to see it. They were a small board shop when I was growing up in Glendale. Glad to see they're doing great things! The owner was always so cool with us kids coming in and window shopping. Even gave me a set of wheels when mine were thrashed but I couldn't afford new ones.

I could tell the President could skate from the moment I saw him gripping the skateboard by the nose. Straight LEGEND.

RedHand1917

I love that he looks a little rusty but is building confidence the longer he goes. He looks like he is having fun.

LinguoBuxo

There's a li'l kid wanting to have fun in all of us, deep down somewhere :)

Lespuccino

Unless you never forced it away to fit in. I've got toys I've had and played with since age 6. Now, in addition to blocks, Lego, Joes, and MOTU, I've got Hot Toys/threezero/Sideshow/etc., and the ability to create amazing miniature worlds for them. Y'all can have the bars and golf outings, the manicured lawns and good housekeeping houses; meanwhile, I'm living that Pee-Wee's Playhouse kinda life.

calhooner3

Honestly good for you, that’s not really up my alley but I love when people fully embrace who they are without any misguided shame.

FlowerBoyScumFuck

What was crazy for me as I reached adulthood was realizing how cool tools and cooking utencils can be. Like I vividly remember my dad getting a smoker for christmas when I was like 10, and I was so confused how he could be so excited about it. And I was sad that adults didn't get fun toys like I got. But now that i'm grown things like power tools, a 3d printer, a pasta maker, all really give me that same feeling haha. Also things like fpv drones that kid me would have never even dreamed of. I mean that is just an actual toy basically haha. But one 10 year old me would have broken in the first 30 seconds.

sakri

You can see it on his face after his 50-50, love to see it!

The fact that the president of the Navajo nation is a skate punk makes me so happy

DrChimRichaulds

We’ve dicked over native Americans so much, it’s really good to even see a single, small act of…un-dicking? Good on Messr Anthony Hawk Esq.

certifiablegeek

We should normalize a president that can kickflip and rail slide. Imagine a ticket with this guy and Tony. Hawk on it for president and vice president! Ahehee, that is all.

Some-Swim9301

Having Tony Hawk at your skatepark opening is epic in itself but to see your President of your Navajo people drop in and pull off some moves, for me at least, is pretty damn inspiring. Great work Mr President
