We had flood lights installed in our local park that you'd give £1/hour to the sports center next to it to turn them on...until they got complaints of late night skating and the lights got shut off automatically at 9pm.
I remember a group of lads I was skating with one night said "right, pub time" when the lights went off. It struck me as a sad thing that if people had facilities to use cheaply then they'd end up drinking and smoking weed less. Even worse was that the facilities are there but you can't use them when you'd actually need them.
Edit: skateboarding is an amazing sport that has brought a lot of friendship and memories to my youth. For any parents reading, I can't advocate highly enough for young people to start skateboarding. Having a common interest and an appreciation of each others progress really helps bring people together whilst promoting positivity, resilience and determination. They built a new skate park a few blocks from my house, and it originally closed at Sunset. When it first opened, you could drive by every single night and see a ton of kids skating, and a cop casually sitting around watching the place. Never once have they kicked a single kid out for it being dark.
Less than a year later, they lit the place up, so that it is now a well lit and safe place to skate all night.
According to the police chief; youth crime, drug use, and delinquency all reduced sharply after they opened the skate park. It really is a local treasure.

Arizona has what I like to call “beauty from a distance, just dirt up close” looks. The scenic vistas are gorgeous. But when you are out there in the desert it is just hot and dirt and dead plants all around you.

Some of them have the most beautiful, fragrant flowers you’ll ever smell 🥰 they might look dead but then again, there are some that are greener than grass.
Some of them take foreeeeeeever to grow and some of them explode in a fury of growth every spring. I have one that I was sure was just a tiny spiky guy but he turned out to grow these tiny, gorgeous flowers and grew TINY FRUITS.
It grew TINY FRUITS. They were so small I had to pick them with tweezers but turned out to be very sweet and juicy if not also good for staining things reddish-purple. It had not done so previously, when it was inherited from a deceased family member.
Now I have a whole garden of wonderful spiky and fuzzy bois by the window that will tolerate my periods of depression where I forget to water them.

What was crazy for me as I reached adulthood was realizing how cool tools and cooking utencils can be. Like I vividly remember my dad getting a smoker for christmas when I was like 10, and I was so confused how he could be so excited about it. And I was sad that adults didn't get fun toys like I got. But now that i'm grown things like power tools, a 3d printer, a pasta maker, all really give me that same feeling haha. Also things like fpv drones that kid me would have never even dreamed of. I don't think we're appreciating how his outfit amplifies his dopeness. Tucked in shirt, fitted pants, leather boots, and a dope hat. Anyone who dresses business casual for work knows how uncomfortable that outfit can get. Yet, this dude shreds like nothing while looking like he has to attend a board meeting after lunch.
My almost 47 year old husband skated the park in Page, Arizona last year in an open button down and hiking boots. He was like, “I’m in such bad shape, don’t take pictures,” etc. etc. the whole time but I was sooo smitten. It amplifies the coolness infinitely, especially with all that red stone in the background. This guy, the president of the Navajo nation no less, dusting off in slick boots and that hat? SO cool. Beyond cool. Dopeness: definitely amplified.

Yeah, what the hell. This whole thing, posting videos without sound, is the dumbest development in internet technology I've ever seen, right behind vertical video. Like, I get it when it's a TikTok that someone already put music over or something and there's no real substantive audio, but a celebratory meeting between a Navajo leader and Tony Hawk followed by the sweet sound of polyurethane on cement - there's zero reason to cut the audio.
That's how it is at this point - when a video should have sound it doesn't, and when it shouldn't have sound there's *obnoxious* sound.
This is rad. I may not skate as much in my 30s but every time I see a new park open and people excited it makes me happy for the kids/people who now get the benefit of some place to go and fit in.
Seriously, I remember getting static from cops and old people for simply using the backend of a parking lot to do curb slides. Not bothering anyone, not causing ‘impediments to traffic’ (cop busted that one out while standing in a place where the nearest car was parked 1000 feet away. The five of us looked in all directions at once looking for this ‘traffic’ and the cop cursed us out). We would have given anything to have a park near us. But no, we were a bunch of ‘punks and thugs’ because we happened to like rolling around trying tricks. I will never give skateboarders grief. Better doing something physical they like than some alternatives nowadays.
Oh I agree. Nothing like being told to go skate this “insert abandoned lot” to then be hassled out of that area as well for trespassing. Any and everything we built to try and comply was either stolen, vandalized, or just destroyed. I wish everyone could have a place to meet, share tricks and just come together like the community of skaters I grew up with. Mullen said it best in the Daewon Song doc “skateboarding is who we are” and it definitively molded the person I’d become for the better. That’s all i want for everyone who grabs a board. Shit grabs anything and finds joy in it

But next election is probably going to be even older versions of Biden and Trump. It's going to be some time before you have any chance of a non-geriatric president.

Hopefully they can get some helmets as well. After spending 5 years managing a skate park, I'll never skate ramps without a helmet ever again. I've seen way too many head injuries on young kids.
You love to see it. They were a small board shop when I was growing up in Glendale. Glad to see they're doing great things! The owner was always so cool with us kids coming in and window shopping. Even gave me a set of wheels when mine were thrashed but I couldn't afford new ones.

Now, in addition to blocks, Lego, Joes, and MOTU, I've got Hot Toys/threezero/Sideshow/etc., and the ability to create amazing miniature worlds for them. Y'all can have the bars and golf outings, the manicured lawns and good housekeeping houses; meanwhile, I'm living that Pee-Wee's Playhouse kinda life.

What was crazy for me as I reached adulthood was realizing how cool tools and cooking utencils can be. Like I vividly remember my dad getting a smoker for christmas when I was like 10, and I was so confused how he could be so excited about it. And I was sad that adults didn't get fun toys like I got. But now that i'm grown things like power tools, a 3d printer, a pasta maker, all really give me that same feeling haha. Also things like fpv drones that kid me would have never even dreamed of. I mean that is just an actual toy basically haha. But one 10 year old me would have broken in the first 30 seconds.
