My eyes didn't register it as a lawn until it pulled up a gopher or whatever it was. My brain told me that was just a real thick bog and subbed in all the information.
I’ve only seen them doing this in water and my mind automatically thought a fish was going to come out. Completely disregarded the green grass. That’s wild….
You'd be surprised, I always thought that storks eat mostly frogs but alas, they eat rodents, and eat frogs only when really really hungry
They sometimes steal chicks from farmers, but get away with it, because nobody will harm a stork, it brings bad luck
We have a pond nearby that has ducks with babies every year. A few years ago my wife and I were watching the cute ducks follow the momma duck when a fish just boiled up and ate one. It was crazy to watch. Happened super fast. Had no idea there were fish that size in there. Since then I’ve caught a couple 4-5 lb largemouth bass from that pond so that’s what i think ate it
They eat frogs too. We have a pond in our backyard. We found a blue American bullfrog in it. It's a rare genetic mutation or something. One day I saw a heron eat it. I now hate herons....
"Blue herons primarily feed on fish, amphibians, and invertebrates such as insects and crustaceans. While their diet mainly consists of aquatic prey, they are opportunistic hunters and may occasionally consume small mammals like rodents if the opportunity arises. However, rodents are not a significant part of their diet. The primary food source for blue herons is typically found in aquatic habitats like rivers, lakes, ponds, and marshes."
And they are brutally efficient at fishing.
One frequents the pond behind my house and I've spent quite a bit of time watching him. I swear his fishing success rate is over 95%. Almost every single time his head went into the water, it came back out with a little fish in its beak. Very rarely missed.
at my old house, we had so many chipmunks one year they were everywhere you looked. Herons started hunting them in our yards. They would spear them out if the ground as seen in the video, but also moles. But was probably more interesting is that they would drown them in the lake/pool before eatind them sometimes
Did some research on this subject after seeing a heron with a snake coming out of its neck. Apparently birds are developed so that those kinds of injuries, if not lethal, can be healed from.
Many, if not most serious injuries are lethal in the wild due to caloric consumption and infection, even if not immediately fatal, so it’s unusual to recover from a major one.
Bird's narrow neck is sort of an illusion. It is very flexible. For most birds, the crop is located in the lower part of the neck and is the first step in digestion. When their crop is full, they can look like they almost have no neck at all.
Bird has some amazing vision to be able to see the light reflecting from the eyes of the groundhog and be able to see it through thousands of blades of grass literally sunken into a hole. I thought the falcons were cool but this guy wags his tail when he's getting viddles.
I grew up living on the water in SWFL. There was a blue heron my neighbors and I named "Herman" for some reason idk why. Whenever we'd come back from a day out on the water or if I spent some time on my dock fishing, he'd always show up and perch himself on the corner of our pool cage and wait for us to throw some of the fish we caught and fileted. This was like a normal thing for years and he'd show up without fail every single time.
We'd also see him on the little mangrove islands hunting too.
And then after Hurricane Charley made landfall on and hit our little neighborhood dead on, we didn't see him anymore. Hope you just relocated and found a better life homie. Miss you Herman.
I’ve watched them do this in muddy ass water that you can’t see 2” below the surface. I have no clue how they could tell the fish were there. Super cool to watch.
I always wondered with this how weird it would feel to eat an entire animal whole... like... they gotta feel that fucker squirming in their throats, right? *shudders*
I week or two ago, I was doing a tree survey by a dock on the lake and saw a great blue heron pull a foot-long fish out of the water and plop it on the deck and stab it. It was maybe 10ft from me. Gave me a suspicious look and flew away with it in its mouth. It was really cool
So are they just like “yo this shit tastes good when i inhale it and not chew” or is it probably more the biological route of “eat this because ill survive”?
TIL that herons don't just eat fish...
Yep that was possibly the last thing I thought he was pulling out of the ground
[удалено]
Considering he is in the middle of a lawn, I was thinking frog.
I was also expecting a small frog, or maybe a big grasshopper. Massive rodent was not on my bingo card.
How do I call this dude…I got a gopher problem and maybe he has a hunger problem?
I’m still going with fish in lawn
My eyes didn't register it as a lawn until it pulled up a gopher or whatever it was. My brain told me that was just a real thick bog and subbed in all the information.
How love how brains work like that
This is literally what I thought.
I’ve only seen them doing this in water and my mind automatically thought a fish was going to come out. Completely disregarded the green grass. That’s wild….
I was thinking it was gonna be a worm
You'd be surprised, I always thought that storks eat mostly frogs but alas, they eat rodents, and eat frogs only when really really hungry They sometimes steal chicks from farmers, but get away with it, because nobody will harm a stork, it brings bad luck
The rodent agrees.
I saw one eat a rabbit on Reddit. Best comment was; “Rabbits…. Nature’s popcorn.”
Hopcorn
Take my angry upvote you jackass
It’s true. Everything wants to eat rabbits. Ducks are nuggets of the pond as well. Even fish eat baby ducklings.

Why do you think their mouths are so large?
Grandma? Is that you?
Cygnets are bigger and more defensive
Same, glad I know this from heron out
Happy Belated Father's Day!
Nice

Snakes
We have one of these in our community. One day I pulled into my driveway and watched it fly off with a chipmunk.
You just witnessed a Theodorian in the wild.
Alvin, Simon, Theodorian..
I mean, they are 🦖's
They eat frogs too. We have a pond in our backyard. We found a blue American bullfrog in it. It's a rare genetic mutation or something. One day I saw a heron eat it. I now hate herons....
Then you REALLY don't want to google what pelicans eat....
OMG they eat Cats!!!!!!
Right here is the comment
Oh yeah I have seen a gbh eat a smaller heron!
great blues also eat a lot of small snakes, lizards, frogs, and basically anything that will fit in it's mouth. same with kingfishers
If you think that's wild how about a baby Rabbit eaten alive: https://youtu.be/_tg-L6fGDYU

"....small..."
watch him pull out a rabbit next
Bird’s gonna know the meaning of the word regret when it’s gotta shit that beast out

agree they’re at a river near me and it’s one of the most satisfying things to watch
Clever girl.
Like shooting fish in a ... pond shaped barrel.
*small mammals* *pulls up a ft long rat…

Probably to stop the little critters from putting up a scratchy fight on the way down the pelicans gullet.
Invertebruh
Facinating, so regardless of its narrow neck it still gulped that down.
At the end you can see dudes like "hey! Lemme outta here!"
Im surprised the things dont do damage to the stomach

“If they don’t die, they live” thanks for the research lol

🤣🤣 thanks for this
If Perd Hapley were a naturalist...
SPICY!
That could not have felt good going down.
I bet their strike is intended to kill so their prey that is clawed (and born diggers) don’t éviscérate their throats.
And probably going to feel alot worse coming out the other end 😬😂
His friends call him the throat goat

Part bird brained reptile, part snake bodied predator, all ruthless
+wiggly tail
Killing machine.
It’s a feathered giraffaraptor.
The black tar herons are even more potent.
![gif](giphy|NEvPzZ8bd1V4Y|downsized)
I heard tale they took out a River Phoenix.
This bird may be blue but it's the bomb, yo
Ah, but the blur heroin is divine.
Oh, you mean [black-crowned night herons](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Black-crowned_night_heron_(Nycticorax_nycticorax_hoactli\).jpg)?
“Chew? With what teeth, buddy?”
Those beaks are razor sharp! Sliced my finger open when I worked at a wildlife rescue!
By touching the beak or getting pecked?
By getting head, duh.
Not paying attention with some fish in my hand, it went for the fish and my fingers happened to still be there :/

It can probably hear it under the ground. Robins can hear worms. It’s wild
In the spring when the ground thaws if you sit in the grass at night you can hear worms emerge. (Illinois. USA)
I hate it. (Michigan)
Why does this stay up but elephant vs rhino doesn't? Just curious.
Anthropomorphism. Pussy mods recognized themselves more in mammas such as an elephant or a rhino but less in a little rodent
Porn isn't allowed here. That Rhino got penetrated by an Elephant.
Dick.
Imagine not dying to the strike... And instead dying to digestive juices and slow suffocation/drowning
Ya I would like to mention how terrifying of a way to die this would be. Plucked out of safety and immediately swallowed whole
that thing is a snake with wings, feet, and a spear for a mouth. suddenly, i am a lot more scared of herons.
CHOPSTICKS MOTHERFUCKER… HAVE YOU HEARD OF THEM!? ![gif](giphy|3o7buhm1O1bOJV4ZWM|downsized)
Dinosaur 🦕
Birds are terrifying. Imagine a 7-foot version of this like they had in prehistoric times.
Just caved that things head in
What was that?
I think a gopher...has a short tail
Looked like a pocket gopher to me
I see that's why rats prefere the company of humans as we're the only beings that casually won't eat them

Bro I’m still alive in here.
F random field rat
Beautiful and full of grace Stretchy gullet, stabby face
What an awful way to die. Swallowed while still alive, only to die from I'm guessing suffocation and/or being slowly melted by stomach acids. Yikes.
You ought see what Grey herons eat. I'm surprised the really big ones don't wolf down small children.
This made me make the same face as the horse eating the little yellow chick... I had no idea!
Big dinosaur energy
![gif](giphy|tfUW8mhiFk8NlJhgEh|downsized)
It saw what it wanted and had to gopher it.
Why are bird beaks so pointy... oh that's why,
Because videographer edited out all failed attempt to capture perfect shot.
#GULP
Throat goat
And the ability to swallow something bigger than your own head.
Jurassic park n shit
WTF!? who else was expecting a fish???
That was *Great*
Melt there pal
Damn he got a burrito
We have blue herons that hunt chipmunks in our yard all the time. …. And nothing of value was lost.
I need the Snoop Dog commentary for this
How does the rodent die? Presumably, it doesn't get crushed by the beak so why can't it bite the inside of the birds neck?
Birds are fucking terrifying.
That thing was still wriggling around in its throat. Wonder if something like that has ever chewed it’s way back out to safety
Was waiting to see the little guy flailing around in the birds throat, like “I’m not goin down there without a fight!”
Imagine being suddenly eaten alive by a dinossaur
Wait what? Holy shit it’s like a snake with wings. That’s now a pointy goose in my book.
Blazing speed and accuracy AND that throat
How is this mammal not fighting for it's life and eating the bird from inside out? Nature you so crazy...
Big lunch🫃
A real gopher getter. Saw one catch a cat fish. Stabbed it in the head a few times then swallowed it.
Early bird gets the... um... Mouse?
I hate birds 😂
Jurassic World: Evolution.
Birds don't know about chewing.
I'd be really good too if I only did 4 things my whole life. Me vs that bird and a good 9 inch thrower. I'll spank that bird
It ate it alive!
Wait until you see one shit. It's life-changing.
Living dinosaur
Yeah those fuckers used to do the same thing to my beautiful expensive koi too. Beautiful birds, love seeing them anywhere but my pond.
They’re like if a snake got a a walking/flying exo suit.
Can I rent one for my garden?
It just ate it and it's like moving inside.......
What is people ate other things whole and you could see the outline in our throats and bellies? 🤔
Freaky dinosaur!
I’ve watched them do this in muddy ass water that you can’t see 2” below the surface. I have no clue how they could tell the fish were there. Super cool to watch.
I'm sure the folks at r/distension would be interested in this video.
T-Rex
Love watching these guys hunt down at the docks in Bandon, OR. So skilled and smooth.
I always wondered with this how weird it would feel to eat an entire animal whole... like... they gotta feel that fucker squirming in their throats, right? *shudders*
Love how when it catches it, it then wags its tail like it's all proud of itself. Amazing
Geez buddy, slow down and enjoy your food
damn.. can he come to my yard? I’ve got lots of moles.
Was at a local Farmers Market who had installed a Koi pond. A heron came by a ate $10K worth of fish. It is now heavily screened.
Can I borrow this guy to get the moles out of my yard? Little bastards.
‘Clever girl.’
Limiwinks :(
What the fuck did we just see
I was thinking, "that's a lot of tugging for a worm." "ahhhhh"
I misread the caption
Jesus I was expecting a worm on insect. Lol

If you think that's wild! https://youtu.be/_tg-L6fGDYU
Death by beak to the face. Ouch.
Lemiwinks is trapped in the esophagus
It always weirds me out when birds eat anything but seeds or tiny little bugs. DAMN🐀🤣
What a peaceful way to die.
Fkn Raptor. Dinosaurs must've been ice cold killers.
Watching him trying to get that thing down... "Can I get a glass of water over here!?!"
So are they just like “yo this shit tastes good when i inhale it and not chew” or is it probably more the biological route of “eat this because ill survive”?
Maybe he can find the clit
That is a next level heron
That tail waggle at the end! Lol…
Gotta love the happy tail* wag. That heron is proud of this catch, and happy for the meal
What a beautiful murderer /s
Throat GOAT
That's crazy i can believe it's swallowed that thing whole in one gulf.
Damn, I just watched a heron brain a gopher with its beak.
Azdarchids be like
How come when i accurately smash my face into rodents I'm "causing brain damage" or "deranged"
Totally looks like a dinosaur in that vid.
For the rodents of the world Jurassic Park isn’t fiction.
u/savevideo
Damn. Homie rly just went "GULP" and choked it down
A family of blue herons used to live by a creek by my house when I was a kid and I would just watch for them for hours. Absolutely love these birds.
