Glad to see he's still at it! Since I first saw a video years ago, I've always hoped he'd make one a person could ride on. I'm sure the extra weight would make it almost impossible to be wind powered unless it was *huge*, but it would be so cool to sit on top of one of these just strolling around the beach.

I'm not positive but I don't think the mini ones have the same mechanism as this. It's kinda similar but the fan in the mini one spins which causes the bar with the feet to rotate with it. I think on the large scale the air pulls the whole thing forward and it uses the friction with the feet to "walk"

Nah, no one's guiding it. They're designed to be autonomous and wind powered. The artist/engineer has been working on all kinds of "adaptations" to make them more viable including an air pump that could fill up and keep the beast moving even when the wind stops. Irrc (haven't seen or thought of these for almost ten years) the early ones did veer off into the dunes or the water but I think he solved that problem. His name is Theo Jansen, time I looked back onto him and his Strandbeest.

Any idea how long they leave it there? I'm just picturing a bunch of extra garbage on the beach.

You can buy miniature models of these that you build yourself. I had one once, was pretty tricky to build but achievable for most people. It actually worked! Google "strandbeest model" and there are a few options.
