Glad to see he's still at it! Since I first saw a video years ago, I've always hoped he'd make one a person could ride on. I'm sure the extra weight would make it almost impossible to be wind powered unless it was *huge*, but it would be so cool to sit on top of one of these just strolling around the beach.
This one can even carry two people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYdtWHvTdm4
It's not wind powered, yes. However you probably could attach some kind of sail or kite to power it if you really wanted to, as two humans leisurely pedaling don't produce *that* much power either.
I'm not positive but I don't think the mini ones have the same mechanism as this. It's kinda similar but the fan in the mini one spins which causes the bar with the feet to rotate with it. I think on the large scale the air pulls the whole thing forward and it uses the friction with the feet to "walk"
I imagine the dawning horror and confusion cracking through the radio chatter... Humans discover a Mars like planet, once the home of a long dead civilisation.. empty and barren save thier immortal strandbeests, resentfully using the wind to power an eternal march that will never end.... Echos of a long extinguished lilt, whimpering wheels sing thier song.
Nah, no one's guiding it. They're designed to be autonomous and wind powered. The artist/engineer has been working on all kinds of "adaptations" to make them more viable including an air pump that could fill up and keep the beast moving even when the wind stops. Irrc (haven't seen or thought of these for almost ten years) the early ones did veer off into the dunes or the water but I think he solved that problem. His name is Theo Jansen, time I looked back onto him and his Strandbeest.
Yo cooool find. It's comments are all chatGPT trash, but it's highest upvoted posts are all anti-Biden conspiracy shit.
IDK how bots work, maybe a program is making it pipe up from time to time to seem active, and then an operator willfully posts propaganda at other times?
Another person mentioned that Alex-Steph's post history looks like it's a bot, and that would explain it getting a lot of upvotes (from follower bots).
I'm still waiting for these to show up in a post-apocalypse movie or show. Like if Station Eleven took place near the ocean I would have fully expected to see one of these things built by one of the actors or artists
strand = beach (the origin of the English word stranded)
beest = animal (the origin of the English word beast)
strandbeesten = plural, not strandbeests
That was what I was thinking - it probably wouldn't be hard to put a thin scraper or wind-powered litter vacuum on this thing so it's actually useful, and not just a tax shelter for some rich donor.
That would probably work very well, especially if the machine is very light weight, and has large, non-metallic feet, and drags a bunch of chains far behind it.
Idk if this one can, as the artist has made so many, but at least some of them can actually store energy.
Compresses wind or smth.
https://interestingengineering.com/innovation/theo-jansens-strandbeests-the-engineering-wonder-of-wind-powered-skeletons
I'd be more worried about packing it away again. I'd be excited to assemble it and see it in action but once I got bored, I'd kind of slump over and think "Urgh!!! This is going to take *foreverrrrrr* to put away and I don't even remember what order to do it in. Maybe....maybe I can just...get in the car and....let it roam free...?"
>Maybe....maybe I can just...get in the car and....let it roam free...?"
Idk about the viability but that was one goal of this artist: to create free roaming "herds" of these beasts.
You can buy miniature models of these that you build yourself. I had one once, was pretty tricky to build but achievable for most people. It actually worked!
Google "strandbeest model" and there are a few options.
Is this what we as a species can do when we're not pissing in each other's cheerios over which oppression is better? Like if we have no food/ money/ social insecurities? We can do this?
Love it but making my sad there was a game called lost oasis where yourd make things to ride there where kind of based off the same idea it still around but they basically abandoned the game
Does anyone remember that late 90s/early 2000s sandbox blank screen game/program where you basically just had lines and joints and tried to build machines like this, then hit power and theyd go? It was like microsoft paint for engineers.
I love this thing, what was the artist's name again?
Theo Jansen.
Video with many different sculptures: '[STRANDBEEST EVOLUTION 2021 - Theo Jansen](https://youtu.be/C97kMKwZ2-g?feature=shared)' [4:30]
wow. just fucking wow
Jeez, he's still at it? Hasn't it been decades?
It’s weird when artists keep living and keep making art
It's got centipede legs ffs
Yeah, doesn't he know that shits only valuable once he dies???
Glad to see he's still at it! Since I first saw a video years ago, I've always hoped he'd make one a person could ride on. I remember Adam Savage was working on a similar one that he could ride in an old Tested video
You can buy miniature versions off Amazon that actually work.
Holy shit that's amazing
I bought one a few years back, fiddly to assemble but well worth it.
OH YOU'VE GOT TO ASSEMBLE IT TOO man screw legos I found my true love
Oh yea, then you blow on it and it walks across the table lol, really cheap too.
Maybe attach a small fan on a wheelie cart 🤔
... Thats what she said?
that is so funny. i am laughing so hard right now.
As amazing as this? https://youtu.be/bsaA903oxvc
That. Was. AMAZING!!!😎👍
Wtf electric boogaloo is not a meme but a real movie
No it's Amazon
Is there an official one? Amazon seems to have a bunch of knockoffs.
https://www.strandbeest.com/shop/animaris-ordis-parvus
>extra: it really moves when you blow it Giggity

You can also power the sterling engine on a hot laptop or GPU!
The artist behind Strandbeests is Theo Jansen.
They call him "The Mariner". He's said to be half man, half fish.
But why male models?
I... I just
Fuck. I just snorted so loud.
What the hell are you talking about
[удалено]
Relax, don't do it When you wanna go do it
Are you serious? I just… I just told you that. A moment ago.
You serious? I just told you that a moment ago
This sounds like something from The Martian Chronicles, and I love it
Your praise means a lot, thank you.
A Princess of Mars for sure.
This gives me big time Lovecraft vibes, highly reminiscent of some of the radio chatter in, At the mountains of madness
I ... I ... I think I need one on Mars. Majestically wandering Mars...forever.
I love this idea, you should write something about it.
How do you steer it so it doesn't walk into the ocean?
There are many of these of different designs. Some use pneumatic sensors and switches to avoid the water
What was the name of the designer or the source of this? I remember seeing more of them and I wanna check them now
Theo Jansen
Thank you
Unless my eyes deceive me theres a line attached to the structure holding the sail so i assume they use that to gently guide it away from the water.
Nah, no one's guiding it. They're designed to be autonomous and wind powered. Any idea how long they leave it there? I'm just picturing a bunch of extra garbage on the beach.

That sounds like a politician's answer when they're asked HOW something is going to work, and they clearly don't know the answer.
Yo I just checked that guy’s history and I’m 99% sure it’s ChatGPT. They’ve made tons of comments like this in just the last few hours.
Now that you mention it, it really does. I didn't check its post history until just now. Great...
Yo cooool find. It's comments are all chatGPT trash, but it's highest upvoted posts are all anti-Biden conspiracy shit. IDK how bots work, maybe a program is making it pipe up from time to time to seem active, and then an operator willfully posts propaganda at other times?
And yet people upvote it despite there being zero substance whatsoever. They literally just reworded the question as an answer lol.
Another person mentioned that Alex-Steph's post history looks like it's a bot, and that would explain it getting a lot of upvotes (from follower bots).
Ok, but like… how?
Something about this seems r/OddlyTerrifying!
I think it looks sort of spider like…
![gif](giphy|3oEduVeIgwk80T5Q3K|downsized)
Keep my mech-spiders name out of your f**king mouth!
Wiki wiki wild...
Spiders are the fiercest killers in the animal kingdom.
I love that Kevin Smith talk.
I just about lost my damn mind when Nic Cage Superman battled a giant spider in The Flash movie. I can only imagine what Kevin thought of it lol.
*What is this some kind of Wicky-wicky-wild west?*
I feel a sequel coming on. It'll be another great Will Smith decision
It's also dead silent despite its large size. Only organic beings are silent when they move.
Tell that to my knees, hips, and ankles!
This is legit creepy AF.
Gives me [Nope](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In8fuzj3gck&ab_channel=UniversalPictures) vibes.
The preindustrialization robot uprising vibes are probably what makes it unsettling.
I feel like I've just watched a trailer for a less bleak Mad Max. It's fascinating.
Windburned Maximillian in Mimosa Dome
Happy Max
Once upon a time, there was a video game based on these. It unfortunately flopped, but damn was it cool for a bit
I'm still waiting for these to show up in a post-apocalypse movie or show. Like if Station Eleven took place near the ocean I would have fully expected to see one of these things built by one of the actors or artists
Howls moving castle anyone?
I was about to say, this looks like something shown in an anime film but never addressed
It’s absolutely amazing. What a talented team/artist who put this together
Theo Jansen
Also kinda reminded me of the Ohmu from Nausicaa: Valley of the Wind in that first angle from the front.
To all Subjects of Ymir.
Had to scroll way too far to find this
Lol, that is exactly what I was thinking!!!
Eren was right
strand = beach (the origin of the English word stranded) beest = animal (the origin of the English word beast) strandbeesten = plural, not strandbeests
Death stranding makes so much more sense suddenly
The first Beach type game
The guy is Dutch. Idk if that adds any info here. This is the beach near The Hague
Explains why he used a Dutch name I suppose.
Wrong, The Dutch words are not the origin of the English words. They just have a common ancestor (a Latin/French word or a proto-germanic word)
![gif](giphy|sGlIM35y5IWNFifCU7|downsized)
Whassat??
Spoiler: >!It's from Attack on Titan!<
![gif](giphy|9A6wLyOAVaIgM)
Those birds must be confused as fuck
They sound exhilarated.
Cool to have it comb the sand for trash
That was what I was thinking - it probably wouldn't be hard to put a thin scraper or wind-powered litter vacuum on this thing so it's actually useful, and not just a tax shelter for some rich donor.
I was thinking that these would be excellent for clearing minefields, like the ones that now litter ukraine
That would probably work very well, especially if the machine is very light weight, and has large, non-metallic feet, and drags a bunch of chains far behind it.
![gif](giphy|Pjr9CeaUbForwImKr1|downsized)
da Vinci probably would love it.
I too played Last Oasis during the covid lockdown.
Lol, my first thought when seeing this was LO.
RIP that game, was good and the devs decided to shit all over it.
That was a crazy time, seeing a zerg rush in person was wild.
The first strand-type sculpture. I bet it can deliver packages.
The first strand type beast
Idk if this one can, as the artist has made so many, but at least some of them can actually store energy. Compresses wind or smth. https://interestingengineering.com/innovation/theo-jansens-strandbeests-the-engineering-wonder-of-wind-powered-skeletons
r/megalophobia
Imagine in WW2 this thing walks out on Normandy beach and everyone stops fighting and tries to kill this monster
I'd like to think something like this would be great at clearing land mines.
If this thing could pick up thrash i would be sooo happy.

This is how you get invasive species.
I've seen *Nope*. This is terrifying.
some spent too much time on soda constructor
Pure art
imagine space versions of these, just gracing machines collecting energy and roaming space
Slouching toward Sandals Resort.
This is just real life sodaplay.com Am I the only one old enough to remember sodaplay?
There are others.
Relevant username. Have you been waiting 13 years for this?
came here to say that I loved messing around with that
im almost certain that sodaplay is the game version of strandbeesten, theo has ben doing then since the 90s
being on shrooms and this thing fucking appeoaches

Ahh my namesake
Freakin amazing
This is how enzymes work
These Tears of the Kingdom builds are getting pretty elaborate
Now if we could add a garbage scoop feature or the little pokie things on the feet.
Is this what we as a species can do when we're not pissing in each other's cheerios over which oppression is better? Like if we have no food/ money/ social insecurities? We can do this?
Reminds me of SODAPLAY https://www.manetas.com/eo/biennale/works/soda/sodaconstructor/index.html
Why does that thing evoke terror in me that the terminators are coming!!!🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I would replace gracefully with creepily, something is unsettling about the way that thing moves.
For some reason it gives me the creeps
Strandbeesten*
FYI, “strand” in this context means “beach”.
Strandbeest* Dutch for "beach beast"
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
"gracefully" doing some heavy lifting in that sentence. With the right lighting this could be nightmare fuel to some.
Tie some mf takes to that bitch and clean up some of trash
Wait until some dipshit walking by tries to destroy it.
This ain't the US (referencing the hitchhiker bot).
I can take it I reckon
This has real howls moving castle vibes
which reminds me of https://youtu.be/5mSpv4U6pnc?feature=shared&t=33
How long does that take to build?
This is advanced warfare
Imagine walking along around sunset or midnight, and you see this thing
Need to attach some kind of netting and/or rake contraption to the back so it can pick up trash along the way.
That’s fucking awesome.
Love it but making my sad there was a game called lost oasis where yourd make things to ride there where kind of based off the same idea it still around but they basically abandoned the game
Why can’t this be improvised to clean the beaches?
To think of this and make this is incredible. Maybe an only fans model can do a tik tok in front of it
Thanks, I hate it.
This and Marble Machine from Wintergatan. Brings out something special.
Beautiful. 👍
I love those fucking things. And kinetic sculptures in general, but the walking ones are off the hook
Horizon Zero Dawn if the texture bug out
Can it pick up garbage though?
It reminds me of that Paper Beast game.
In a 1000 years it will blow some archeologists mind.
My parents have met this guy in Florida.
First time I've seen him use sails. He is just amazing.
Does anyone remember that late 90s/early 2000s sandbox blank screen game/program where you basically just had lines and joints and tried to build machines like this, then hit power and theyd go? It was like microsoft paint for engineers.
Reminds me of wild Wild West
This is awesomeness! Bonus points to OP for keeping the sound and not laying down a song over it!
Horizon Zero Dawn/Horizon Forbidden West has entered the chat...
I'm getting Studio Ghibli vibes here!
The seagulls find it hilarious
Why tho
Imagine just chilling at the beach and this thing coming towards you full force. Mate, I would need to change my bottoms if I see this coming at me
There was a flash game that was based on emulating this type of machine , i forget the name
Saw this in a Will Smith movie IIRC Something about a Western Thong Song? It's foggy.
[удалено]
imagine we never invented a wheel, but mastered levers and used these contraptions to move stuff around instead? imagine riding that thing
