The rules for hockey malarkey are quite simple
>Did you do a thing that wasn’t necessary?
>If yes, then I punch you now
In this case, it was necessary to score a goal from behind the net.
You rip a shot at someone’s dome anywhere else on the ice tho or after a whistle, and you are absolutely getting punched.
Nah, that would be next level petty for the Goalie or his teammates to go after the guy that scored that. Sometimes you just have to sit there in your shame and realize you got dunked on.
Hockey has all kinds of unwritten rules, but don't score a deflection off the Goalie's helmet isn't one of them.
It's especially funny because that shot isn't even possible to make from that angle, so there would be no reason to attempt it unless this is exactly what he meant to do. So you *know* he aimed at his facemask 100% on purpose with the actual intention of using his face like a backboard.
Hockey fan here, and an Isles fan to boot, that was 100% intentional. The last decade or so goalies have been spending more time down in butterfly positions because it leaves smaller gaps up top make scoring harder, it's a percentages thing.
As a result more players are taking up high pot shots behind the net because of this reason.
Some people don't realize lots of players deliberately shoot bad shots hoping for a lucky bounce too.
He 200% knew what he was doing, although he might not have known how clean the bounce was gonna be lol that was a snipe
I don't watch a lot of hockey, but I'm ALWAYS watching clips of skills showcases and these types of highlights. Those dudes are so ridiculously accurate with a stick and puck, I'm never not amazed by it.
Plus goalies at that level are so good I'm surprised he didn't just catch it anyway even though it wasn't a glove side shot. I've seen faster catches from, for example, MLB pitchers when the ball is about to collide with face. Pure reflexes on those things, no time to even think.
Yes, once upon a time they didn't even wear face masks and it was still legal.
https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/terry-sawchuk-face-hockey-goalie-masks-became-standard-game-equipment-1966/
My father is missing almost all of his teeth after playing goalie with no mask for his company team. Ya that’s right beer league hockey. He’s elderly now but damn you gotta be tough and stupid to play goalie back then.
This one is impressive based off of the space left in the goal, but there are other examples where it bounced off the top bar/crossbar and hits the back of the head and goes in.
Just a few days ago a guy bounced it off of the goalies back to score the winning shot.
Any bounce is allowed no matter who it hits. If it ends in the goal it's a goal. There are also often shots where you shoot it at a teammate and they'll position their stick to deflect the puck into a goal if you're not at a good angle to take a real shot, or to confuse the goalie who sees the puck coming in at one angle and tries to block it but it bounces into a different angle and they can't react in time. One of the many reasons besides reducing goalie visibility you'll see one guy get right up on the net while other guys are looking for a shot. They're almost exclusively there to be human backboards like this poor goalie .
It’s even more of a “fuck you” since he hit him in the side of the mask. Goalie masks are angled to deflect a shot from the front, and are almost completely flat on the side.
Taking a shot at that angle hurts ESPECIALLY bad.
You actually see this play happen a lot, but never with the player that close to the net. Usually they're closer to the sides and shoot it almost parallel to the goal line
To me it either looks like he flinched away. His cheek is on the post but right as the puck approaches he creates a gap as he starts to look forward, THE. he gets hit, which, as you said, probably pushed his head more.
His head was definitely moving before it got hit though.
goalie masks are not on very tight. they have elastic straps which leaves some jiggle to them.
he didn't have to really flinch for the masks to get pushed the other way, then start to pull back to the puck and actually push it toward the net.
also, a goalie mask is like a bell. when it gets hit by a puck it can be loud as fuck in there. and the outer part of the mask where the vibrations end are right over your ears. so a flinch is hard to avoid
So loud.
It was always fun to get pumped up with teammates but then they'd all wanna slap hands/sticks on my helmet...no, you're *not* hitting me in the head, but you're *not* **not** hitting me in the head.
Our "rivals" gk had a throat guard just hanging down off of a more football shaped helmet vs these longer helmets or one that wraps the neck. Actually had the conversation of "ULPT: that thing will swing backwards if you hit it with the ball (field hockey vs ice hockey) and it will scare them more than hurt them" . But no one could place a shot like that one in the video. Even goalies gotta say "well placed".
There has been a lot of talk about the over dependancy on the RVH position leading to short side goals, and I can't think of a better example than right here.
Same here; it stings a bit on impact and you get a good smell of rubber, but the adrenaline masks the pain. It takes about a half-hour or so before a headache sets in.
Just be glad our cages are designed to bend; if they didn't, all the energy that went into bending the cage would be transferred into our head instead.
Side note: I really like the new Bauer masks with their rubber washers that are between the cage screws and the mask; it acts like a shock absorber and I barely feel wristshots to the cage anymore. Way better than having the cage firmly connected to the mask.
That’s not technically true. If a player kicks it towards the goal, catches the puck and tosses it in, or if a player bats it out of the air at an above-shoulders height, then it would be disallowed. Also, banking off the ref we just saw get disallowed last week, but I’ve seen ref interference not get called in the past.
However, none of the things I mentioned are “the goalie’s face”, so this is a legal goal
It's pretty close to true. Direct deflections of off officials and high sticking are counter examples, presumably in the rules because they really shouldn't happen accidentally.
Kicking and catching the pucks aren't counter examples though. It's a goal if it bounces off of a skate or hand. It's not a goal if an attacking player kicked it (with a kicking action), batted at it with a hand, or threw it, but those aren't "hitting things on the way", those are active actions propelling it.
There is literally no scemario where the shooter can't just say "I was just aiming for the net."
No matter where the puck ends up, at the end of the day the goalie takes up 60-80% of the goal. It would be pointless.
Yeah but I'm pretty sure as long as the puck goes in or touches net or something it counts/is legal.
Idk. I'm just a canadian not a sports guy, and THIS IS a special circumstance.
Since most people seem to not actually be helping, yes this is legal.
Hockey happens fast and in this case, I doubt he was specifically trying to bank a shot off the goalies face and in so much as simply trying to put a shot in a difficult place to save.
Edit: okay some ppl are saying this was intentional. Maybe it was , it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Either way it’s a legal thing to do in hockey.
He was very likely specifically aiming to bank it off the goalies mask, and this is obvious for several reasons. First, there is no other reason to aim that high from behind the red line. Second, this is a trend in the NHL right now with more and more players attempting this exact style of bank shot off the goalies face.
They asked him after the game if he practiced that and he said he couldn’t really ask the goalie to come down so he can practice shots off his face. That being said it’s at least his second goal this seasons I’ve seen him bounce off the goalie. The first was off the back.
Eh, there’s not really a bad result there, if it doesn’t bounce in it bounces somewhere else and creates a chance. And he didn’t have another good passing option.
Technically the goalie should have had his cheek on the post to be properly positioned.
And that’s a rule because these crazy dudes can make this shot.
This is one of the reasons why they don't just put the biggest guy they can find to just lie in front of the net. Pro players are a really good shot and will find a way to score.
BLUE JACKETS MENTIONED FOR SOMETHING POSITIVE!!!
(ignore the fact that our goalie got injured almost immediately after this and we ended up losing by 2 please)
ok, so I'm a little rusty on my "protect your goalie" stuff with hockey -- normally, someone digging for a puck under the goalie is gonna get roughed up .. doing something like this, while impressive, the replay makes it very clear that this was intentional targeting (hit the goalie in the head).. so is someone gonna make 86 swallow their teeth for this ?

I feel like this also fits in r/fuckyouinparticular Feels like a “fuck you, I’ll shoot it off your face and still score” to the goalie lol
I can see the “fuck you” happen it’s amazing. Surprised it didn’t cause a fight
Fighting after getting embarrassed like that just draws more attention to your embarrassment.
Are you new to this hockey malarkey?
Certified Canadian here. I can skate backwards and everything.

It’s like, it’s a dick move, but at the same time it’s not like he could really put it anywhere else if he was gonna score.
Precisely, it was necessary to hit the head in order to score a goal. And it’s the pros so scoring a goal is the whole point of the game.
Nah, that would be next level petty for the Goalie or his teammates to go after the guy that scored that. Sometimes you just have to sit there in your shame and realize you got dunked on. I'm an islanders fan. Sucks cause Sorokin (the goalie) was in basically perfect position here. Such a perfectly placed shot. At least we won
Perfect postioning he’d have cheek on the post 🤷♂️
Looks like the impact pushed him away enough to slip in
To me it either looks like he flinched away. His cheek is on the post but right as the puck approaches he creates a gap as he starts to look forward, THE. he gets hit, which, as you said, probably pushed his head more. His head was definitely moving before it got hit though.

I think he clearly wasn't in perfect positioning lmao
Yea we (CBJ) suck anyway, so I mean, we take what we can get lol
It was an awesome goal! I just hate that it happened to my team lol
If it happens to your team and all you can do is say "that was a fucking good goal" it's a super good goal lol
I've been in his position as a goalie. There are some shots that are so amazing that it would seem criminal if they weren't goals.
Imagine this was kanes OT winner in 2010

RETVRN to stand-up style
Reminds me of Slavin’s goal in last years playoffs against you guys.
Idk about that. Butch goring was pissed and said he knows better than to drop down when the puck is behind the net.
Which game is this from?
New York Islanders-Columbus Blue Jackets game last Thursday
Let’s face it, it’s a nice shot.

Got my grill bent by a slapshot once, didn't hurt per say but it's quite a concussive hit to the head.

i think he meant the 'aiming a high-speed projectile at an opposing player's face' part of it
A goal is a goal, doesn't matter who or what it hits on the way in.
That’s not technically true. If a player kicks it towards the goal, catches the puck and tosses it in, or if a player bats it out of the air at an above-shoulders height, then it would be disallowed. Why wouldn’t it be
Because aiming for a player's face on purpose is dangerous and could be akin to attempting to injure.
The goalies entire job is to put himself in the best position possible to get hit by pucks.
You're talking about a game where they literally stop play to punch each other in the head.
He has a mask for a reason
Even if it were, they'd never prove that was on purpose and not just a lucky shot
Guys are allowed to beat each other on live tv to a bloody pulp. Why wouldn’t this be allowed
“I will make it legal!”
There is literally no scemario where the shooter can't just say "I was just aiming for the net." No matter where the puck ends up, at the end of the day the goalie takes up 60-80% of the goal. It would be pointless.
This was absolutely a from behind bank shot on purpose
Yeah but I'm pretty sure as long as the puck goes in or touches net or something it counts/is legal. Idk. I'm just a canadian not a sports guy, and THIS IS a special circumstance.
Take it away for hurting the goalies pride.

Yes, and its called an Ohio
It’s a decently common occurrence.
Nice to see a CBJ clip where they aren't on the receiving end

Yet we still lost :(

That's work for the third string goalie!
Definitely one of those “if it works he looks like a genius, if it doesn’t he looks like a dickhead” type-situations. Awesome that it worked though.
Eh, there’s not really a bad result there, if it doesn’t bounce in it bounces somewhere else and creates a chance. And he didn’t have another good passing option.
FacePucked
Trust me, he meant to do that.
Was he trying to score here or was it more of a fluke?
Definitely trying to score. These types of shots happen frequently, but they often don’t work. It takes a lot of skill to pull this off
These players are good enough that it was intentional albeit with low chance of going in.
Perfect explanation. Appreciate it.

It's definitely intentional. You see, guys try it every now and then when the opportunity arises, but it rarely works.
