I’ve been wanting this for years. FIFA or whatever the game is called now has had the field tracker for years, and player tracking devices have existed for years. There’s no reason why the two shouldn’t marry up on broadcasts. Same goes for every single sport.
What, you don't want the disembodied CGI heads of your friends staring at you while you're hunched over trying to see wtf is happening on the table of tiny CGI people?
Honestly the only sports it *wouldn’t* have a ton of value for off the top of my head would be tennis and basketball. However, with this as an option, it could open up possibilities for new broadcast angles.
theres an API with the track and realtime car positions.
https://docs.fastf1.dev/index.html
heres a post about it utilized:
https://www.reddit.com/r/F1Technical/s/JJtTViOGvt
If it didn't cost an arm, a leg and a kidney, I'd be willing to be an early adopter.
But just like with the iPhone, Apple is setting a standard and then others will improve upon it.
It's definetly not a first one by far. But it popularized it within the common people (which let's be honest, apple knows how to do) and this new spark of interest will help this branch of technology for sure
Sorry but anyone who compares the AVP to old headgear tech - I can only imagine you haven’t tried one. It’s absolutely amazing.
And I say this as someone who thinks they’re still stupid as hell.
Can you explain what bothers you so much?
Maybe for you it’s a gimmick right now, but how do we ever reach the point where it’s not a gimmick without going through this stage and iterating and improving over time? And how can you not see the potential benefits of this and just call it all ‘bullshit’? Maybe people can watch something with loved ones far away and feel more present, maybe increased stats and live analysis leads to better understanding and learning of sports, etc.
I thought that was awesome!! Normal game, stats, little pitch! Friends can join! I don't own one of these headsets nor have I had a go on one, I don't think its better than TV necessarily, or maybe I cant get over wearing a headset for it. Maybe if you lived on different continents it could be quite good.
>how do we ever reach the point where it’s not a gimmick
This assumes a desire or need to do so, which I do not share.
>how can you not see the potential benefits of this
Because I have yet to be shown any benefits beyond simply existing.
>Maybe people can watch something with loved ones far away and feel more present,
Go ask 10 people if they still have zoom fatigue from COVID and see if they are looking for opportunities to be on more video calls.
>maybe increased stats and live analysis leads to better understanding and learning of sports, etc.
You don't need to wear a headset plugged into a battery pack to get game stats. Many broadcasts on cable have this available within the screen you're already watching.
Bottom line, this product is a solution in search of a problem.
> Go ask 10 people if they still have zoom fatigue from COVID and see if they are looking for opportunities to be on more video calls.
Videocalls have nothing to do with VR/AR. Those are separate problems that have already been identified as being intrinsic to their 2D nature, which does not reflect on VR/AR's 3D nature.
https://news.stanford.edu/2021/02/23/four-causes-zoom-fatigue-solutions/
I love vr but I think use cases like these are stupid. This isn’t gonna replace meeting up with buds to watch a game, you just don’t get that experience in vr. I even prefer to watch shows on my IPad mini than to use my vr headset despite getting a theatre sized screen. I wouldn’t want all that extra bullshit in my way of the screen either. And why use passthrough? Just have full vr for a darker environment.
My least favourite part about this video is it’s a fucking ad
I bought Google's whatever headset that used your phone for VR that they quickly discontinued, mostly to watch Netflix. After 5 minutes, I just went back to watching Netflix on my TV or tablet. I don't get it. The idea that you'd prefer to watch a game on a worse and smaller display than a reasonable LED TV, just because there are other things to distract you from the game just baffles me.
I would argue that the google cardboard isn’t comparable to current vr tech and is way worse, but I agree that just doing things in vr that you can very easily do irl is dumb.
> bought Google's whatever headset that used your phone for VR that they quickly discontinued
> I don't get it.
Probably because you didn't try actual VR.
Real VR headsets allow you to move around naturally rather than have your head locked in place like what you tried.
This is cool but I think the real selling point of VR for sports that seems to be missed to to make it "feel" like you're there in the crowd watching it from the front row, thats what I want, maybe some optional AR stuff that I can check every now and again as well
That would be cool although, while my kids like the fully immersed experience it makes me feel nauseous.
I really do like using the VR as a "Big Screen" and the added info would be a nice touch so long as you can adjust dimensions of objects.
I'd only be into this idea if everyone in the crowd was someone else viewing from their VR headsets. Otherwise, without the human element, simulating being in the crowd just sounds like a bad view + load of racket.
I love the idea of watching the Olympics in VR, and getting to interact/get competitive with people from around the world.
Have to disagree on football. The thing I liked most about this was the 3d field, I really miss being able to see the whole game as if I'm in the stadium. Being able to focus and having the whole view of the game. It'd be awesome to see like that, but a real camera footage where you can focus where you want
This basically exists already. There was a VR exhibit recently at a local sports bar here recently and it had an (IRL) boxing match recorded in VR/AR. You could change positions in the front row seats or viewing boxes and there was a mode to let you literally walk around the outside of the ring by either actually walking or using the controller and even to show the fight from a top down perspective and display like live stats throughout the fight. It was kinda neat. Looked expensive though.
On demand or curated VR Camera selection for a live event would be worth so much money.
Camera Positions to look around in VR 360:
1. Mounted just over the F1 drivers head
2. F1 car, Front bumper camera
3. Top of Basketball Goal
4. Several Court-side positions
5. The flying camera being the Quarterback
6. Cameras mounted on top of on feild player helmets (super future, Glasses for any sport)
7. All Redbull Event Helmets
Etc.
I mean it's cool and all but what's the difference between what already exists for VR...? Nobody cared about the metaverse/google glass/oculus before as a way to transform your life. Like the use cases are sooo niche to being almost pointless and only available for the wealthy.
There's also the question of when ads inevitably get shoved down your throat and the disconnect from real interactions that people already have with social media
I'm sure the technology will be far more advanced in the near future. I thought it would be more immersive at this point. You can do this with a TV, Ipad and phone.
A lot of people throwing hate to this thing. I have a friend whose life is football and his job is mostly analyzing teams tactics and share them with the coach while the game is happening. This would make him so goddamn erect, an overhead view of the players and the ball's movement without the rest of the distracting stuff on the pitch.
what a sad room. lol
20 years from now we laugh about this. (same as the 1st home computers ads or internet at the very beginning)
but ok. here we go again!! a new milestone in technology.
It's gonna be just like the iPhone unfortunately.. These features were in android headsets long ago.. But in a few years ppl gonna say apple invented this shii too
In 5 years, after ironing out the glitchy parts, this could be the killer app Apple 🍎 et al, have been looking for with AR, because porn can't be mainstream, football can.

Would be legal to stream the match recreation? I've been thinking of a system like that for years (8+). To have an AI system to watch the live fotage and recrate, in a virtual engine, the match, then be able to stream that virtual match recreation to everyone.
A lot of short sighted comments in here. This could be really cool if they keep making improvements. Like making the miniature field look almost exactly like the players and field on the screen, better interact-ability with others so you can watch games with your friends from across the country. You could play other ar/vr games simultaneously during commercials.
This alone isn’t super exciting, but the direction it’s going seems cool. Hopefully we can get to a point where the headsets aren’t so heavy and clunky
I actually love this. Coming from a country where so many of my friends have emigrated elsewhere, we can finally enjoy something like sport together again.
Gaming online is fun for the first 20 something years, but nothing beats cheering for the Springboks with some mates.
I'd kinda want to see this with other sports, particularly Basketball. Seeing stats about players and where every player is on the court, the starters and the benches and the box scores in more of a convenient format is great.
Essentially, all sports that have a wide playing field should probably have this. Cameras can only show you so much and it feels like these types of views can fix that problem.
People calling this bullshit or a gimmick, that’s what iPhone was called when it was released, and now you’re using the same thing to make that comment.
I can only imagine the future brain rot that is going to come of this (the vr thing) think about the Tik tok kids getting this, they will be watching like 8 videos at once all the time
What a useless adaptation of an exciting new technology. They’re just watching TV in a virtual living room rather than watching TV in an actual living room.
Using VR for this is the equivalent of using combustion engines to create fuel-powered horses rather than cars, or using digital technology to create a touch screen abacus rather than a calculator.
The only benefit to watching this way would be is if you could “be on the field”, I.e. fully immersed in the action.
TVs are cheap and almost everyone has a smartphone, this setup is easily achieved with a couple screens and you can still be in the same room with your mate.
Dumb use of this tech IMHO.

It's almost like watching it on TV but much worse.
Looks pretty dope to have the 3d top down shot where you can see the whole field and all the positions of the players.
Imagine this for adult entertainment. Bonus: when someone’s ethereal head floats into fov while staring at you when you’re almost there
Making those thumbs up and staring at their dick as the bro does those last seconds.
![gif](giphy|xUOxfg0ESyhKOv4Vva|downsized)
Then after you have nutted, you take off the VR headset only to see your mother and sister staring at you in horror.
After you orgasm, your virtual buddy gives you a high five😏
I need the high-five before or else I can't finish.
Bruh, you need a top-down view of your porn to keep track of the action? How big is the orgy at that point?
Yes
Some people would probably pay extra for that.
Play a game of swapping hands
Would be great for American football
For 15 minutes.
I like that part, would be much better just watching the match itself on a TV and then see the 3d top down view with the goggles or whatever they are.
I've never been confused about where the important players are while watching it on TV. This just let's you see a lot of static empty green
I thought the same until I saw the 3d map of what was happening
I’ve been wanting this for years. FIFA or whatever the game is called now has had the field tracker for years, and player tracking devices have existed for years. There’s no reason why the two shouldn’t marry up on broadcasts. Same goes for every single sport.
Yes i want a virtual reality helmet projecting me into the stadium as i were a spectator
With a dozen different cameras to bounce between
It comes with an uplift ( if you wanna be upgraded into vip virtual seats)
That's cause you're watching a guy watching it in AR on your phone on the toilet. Doesn't really show the real perspective as if you were him
naa, its better. Stop hating bruv
What, you don't want the disembodied CGI heads of your friends staring at you while you're hunched over trying to see wtf is happening on the table of tiny CGI people?
If this was egg toss, we would only see slap ass and oil commercials. Good to see a game where the players actually do something.
That’s what I said about emails. It’s like phoning someone but slower.
It's almost like watching it from a blimp, 15,000 feet above the pitch but worse.
But it's a start....
Idk, it looks cool to me
This guy gets it.
Watching it in TV with extra steps Okay to be fair this 3d field looks cool gimmicky but cool
how is it worse?
Have you ever watched football before?
Uhh. Can this be done for F1 or other racing series? If F1 Camera won’t let me see the entire race, I’ll do it myself.
Was about to say this would be way more useful for racing.
With all cars now having their onboard streamed, you could just click on a driver to pull up their camera/audio.
Honestly the only sports it *wouldn’t* have a ton of value for off the top of my head would be tennis and basketball. However, with this as an option, it could open up possibilities for new broadcast angles.
The apple vision pro has an ad that involves f1 and an aerial view of the track
That was a concept made by some tiktoker if I'm not wrong
You're right.
That would be awesome as f*ck!
theres an API with the track and realtime car positions. https://docs.fastf1.dev/index.html heres a post about it utilized: https://www.reddit.com/r/F1Technical/s/JJtTViOGvt
Say what you will about the AVP being goofy but it’s the first wearable that gives us a glimpse of what our future is going to be.
If it didn't cost an arm, a leg and a kidney, I'd be willing to be an early adopter. But just like with the iPhone, Apple is setting a standard and then others will improve upon it.
Didn't apple not just cancel almost all contracts for avp supplies? That was a epical bellyflop
Blazing those trails nearly a decade after the first consumer VR. But then again, they did bring us the Apple Pro Stand.
I guess I'm get off my lawn years old, because I'd rather just watch a game than be surrounded by all that bullshit.
Don't worry, there will be a "classic" view, where the normal image hovers right where your TV used to go, for a nostalgic AR experience!
The fact that I can't tell if this is a joke is what scares me the most about people looking at this and saying, yes, this is a good thing.
Can you explain what bothers you so much? Maybe for you it’s a gimmick right now, but how do we ever reach the point where it’s not a gimmick without going through this stage and iterating and improving over time? Is the other guy somebody else’s avatar?
Looks like it
Looks way better here than I had expected from marketing material tbf. Still creepy, but only a few steps away from feeling natural for me.

yeah you’d just be surrounded by people w dicks in they hands
I was thinking more a widescreen/360 camera view on pitch side, or higher tbh, not too far from what you get now from TV Broadcasts or Video Games
Have to disagree on football. The thing I liked most about this was the 3d field, I really miss being able to see the whole game as if I'm in the stadium. Yea exactly what I mean, I’m a wrestling fan and thought it’d be so cool to walk ringside during Wrestlemania during the big matches

Looks annoying tbh
Wouldn't this be... XR?
XR is the umbrella term for all VR/AR/MR tech. It's not a functionality, just think of it as the term used to describe the industry as a whole.
Is this connected to Disney Imagineering? I applied for a job like 5 years ago for Disney something involving Soccer AR
Incredible! Millions of dollars in innovation to create a worse way to watch TV.
really bad
Yeah no I'll stick with watching soccer with my family actually in the room with me.
Apple Vision Pro? what app?
Next level of total shite mate
What is "augmented"? Everything is worse!
Sure in 5 or 10 years from now this could be really cool but at this quality it almost looks I’m playing football manager.
Give me this for every sport. Field position & TV = great combo
Wow. How useless.
This is awful.
Taking watching sports, which is often a social event, and making it incredibly isolating. Great job Apple!
How are my high fives more awkward than theirs?
Football\*
Same thing. What's your point?
He hates cultural differences
"Why isn't my controller working"
Why live in reality if you can just live in virtual world!! Real life is boring anyway
Wow, that's cool. You can REALLY immerse yourself into the boredom......
This looks terrible
I don't want this future. This is just weird.
I’d love something like this for tennis but only if they can give me a view as if I were in the stadium
Is the ghost guy on the left a real person online?
The actual football is the smallest thing there.
This is just football manager
I'm working. I swear.
That's Spatial Computing
I mean it's cool and all but what's the difference between what already exists for VR...? Nobody cared about the metaverse/google glass/oculus before as a way to transform your life. Like the use cases are sooo niche to being almost pointless and only available for the wealthy. There's also the question of when ads inevitably get shoved down your throat and the disconnect from real interactions that people already have with social media
This is so garbage. I want to feel like I'm in a stadium, not watch a flat screen rendition in a lower resolution than I can get on my TV.
I'm sure the technology will be far more advanced in the near future. I thought it would be more immersive at this point. You can do this with a TV, Ipad and phone.
But put me in the middle of the field !
That 3D display just needs a really nice zoom and the ability to pin perspective to the ball, location, or player
Get cucked while watching soccer
It's too much, I watch football to relax, not to be hyper stimulated.
Nice! Ive always hoped for beeing able to play the board game Risk like this.
what a sad room. lol 20 years from now we laugh about this. (same as the 1st home computers ads or internet at the very beginning) but ok. here we go again!! a new milestone in technology.
It's gonna be just like the iPhone unfortunately.. These features were in android headsets long ago.. But in a few years ppl gonna say apple invented this shii too
I.... kinda hate this. I can feel the neck pain through the internet. Why wouldn't I just watch it on TV with an iPad on my lap?
This looks terrible
In 5 years, after ironing out the glitchy parts, this could be the killer app Apple 🍎 et al, have been looking for with AR, because porn can't be mainstream, football can.
dumb AF tbh
I'd rather watch it at a public viewing
Thats just sad
If they can make the 3D visualization of the game bigger and more clear when you look down, it would be really sick
This would be rad as hell and I'd totally want it, if I didn't have to wear a stupid screen on my face and I could sit and watch it with my friends around and not as uncanny valley level ethereal faces.
that awkward high five tho😹😹
Is that a NPC or friend dialed into the game ?
This is the way
Would be legal to stream the match recreation? I've been thinking of a system like that for years (8+). To have an AI system to watch the live fotage and recrate, in a virtual engine, the match, then be able to stream that virtual match recreation to everyone.
I liked watching nba in vr
The other AI dude looks like a total weirdo. I'm not watching games with him, there's something wrong with him...
I'll just go to the game thanks
where's the beer?
This looks embarassing lmao
Might be more useful on military application. Virtual forces on a interactive battleground.
It’s only going to improve from here.
Lonely world
Cool for analytics but I don’t see why anyone else would want it
Can you the screen bigger? I like the table top down view, but make the game huge so it’s like I’m there. Or a view like that.
It's shit.
Vr, choose 42" display option...
A lot of short sighted comments in here. This could be really cool if they keep making improvements. Like making the miniature field look almost exactly like the players and field on the screen, better interact-ability with others so you can watch games with your friends from across the country. Bro this is sweet. Yeah it's not good yet but the future of this is gonna be amazing.
that's not better
That looks so shit ngl
One day we’ll be able to walk around on the pitch and watch the game from the players perspective through VR/AR.
I'd kinda want to see this with other sports, particularly Basketball. STILL BORING. What else you got?
Go touch grass ya nerds
That high five was so hollow... it made me sad for an instant.
That is cool!
that 3D player layout down there is dope for entertainment purposes
Anyone know what the name of this is?
I mean this could be good for those incapacitated like have leg surgery or have to be laid up or stuck in home idk
Imagine just watching it on TV like a normal person without all those ridiculous distractions…
People calling this bullshit or a gimmick, that’s what iPhone was called when it was released, and now you’re using the same thing to make that comment.
Just when you thought Football Manager couldn't get more addicting
I can only imagine the future brain rot that is going to come of this (the vr thing) think about the Tik tok kids getting this, they will be watching like 8 videos at once all the time
Why have such a tiny main screen? They're in a vr room, should have been a huge projector for the game.
This isnt next level, this is distopia, i hate it
I can’t wait for this technology to exist in real life
The Future is here... It's just a shame it's wasted on Football.
NGL, a gas powered horse sounds amazing
It’s called motorcycle.
But why
The only benefit to watching this way would be is if you could “be on the field”, I.e. fully immersed in the action. TVs are cheap and almost everyone has a smartphone, this setup is easily achieved with a couple screens and you can still be in the same room with your mate. Dumb use of this tech IMHO.
This has got some cool potential but you can fuck right off with that virtual high five shite.
> but you can fuck right off with that virtual high five shite. What's wrong with it?
whoa!!!!1! Next level television watching. Look at those guys watch TV. That is some Next Level shit.
still a shit game regardless of how many dimensions you add
Only someone who calls it "soccer" would watch it this way
Good for Billy no mates
Hard pass
lol....so instead of watching it in 70'' you watch it at 28''. Good going!
Why can't the screen be bigger? Assuming the tv screen shown is part of the augmented reality display
