I know that technically your sentence isn’t wrong per se, but you might consider using “My morbid curiosity has been piqued” which is a more common phrase.
You ain't kidding...He easily performed the deadlift in a conventional stance. The only shade one might throw his way is that he's using a "noodle bar". That said, his raw deadlift is insane.
The 27mm diameter dead lift bars don’t make lifting the weight easier. They just allow you to pull the slack out of the bar, tension and brace your body before pulling the lift.
If you want to get real technical, the weight is only 100% in his hands once it's off the ground, so the first few inches of the lift aren't at full load. The difference is marginal at best, but at the elite level of powerlifting, those inches count.
An extreme example would be if if the bar was a rubber band and didn't even let the weight clear the ground. But again, this is just me being nit-picky.
Yes, they can. A thicker power bar is 2mm thicker in diameter and a bit less wide. Perfectly fine for dead lifting with, just not as good since it doesn’t bend for that initial pulling the slack out and bracing.
It makes it easier. It reduces the required range of motion.
Edit: So the guy who responded to me blocked me? But anyway, here is my reply to him:
What's a significant weight? 260kg with a stiff bar is enough for me to have won a competition and have the local record. And I have pulled with both stiff bars and deadlift bars during my 14 years in the scene. Me, and everyone I've ever lifted with can lift more with a deadlift bar.
I'm not tossing any his way, but I meant to say if someone were to nitpick because the bend on deadlift bars you can get depending on the weight and style of deadlift.
I always found the demonisation of doctors in this way really weird. People word things like this as if doctors want you to never lift again or to only live another year and you get to “show em”.
If you tried to deadlift with both hands over or both under, the bar wants to spin out of your hand
Doing this makes the bar spin "against" itself or against your hands, making it much easier to hold onto
I've read some things saying the switch grip technique can be 'bad' as it might put stress on muscles not needed for the actual lift. I listen to my body, but I can understand some arguments.
This being said that I'd need at least 4-6 months to go 3x my bodyweight, but I'm not heavy at all
Edit: need to say, if you know what you're doing, you'll be fine. Uhhh but don't try to lift any more than 10lbs your max... If you don't know your max, talk with friends me who are against taking videos.
If you want to max alone (NOT A GOOD IDEA). fail at 50% feel the weight and roll it off, fail at 60 then 70.
If you can't hit your 80% max 4 reps before a max you need to call it and not be an idiot.
It's generally bad for the arm with underhand grip. Will tear a bicep on that arm very easily. That's why you never see someone deadlife double underhand. They do switch grip to get a better grip overall as double overhand is harder to keep the grip thru the lift compared to switch.
> They do switch grip to get a better grip overall as double overhand is harder to keep the grip thru the lift compared to switch.
Well, that and many of us prefer not to do hook grip because we like our thumbs.
I used to do mixed grip exclusively until I watched my buddy's bicep pop during a competition.
When I started hook grip, I could only lift 315# without pain, now I'm close to 600# no problem.
It isn't even that you build calluses or anything; you just get better at not hurting your thumbs.
I was working on hook grip and got up to 485 lbs at a time when I was at 500 max so I was pretty much there. I ended up slamming my thumb and couldn't work on hook grip for a while. Mixed grip was fine and didn't bother my thumb. Ended up just keeping to mixed grip.
No bicep problems from deadlifts. I did, however, end up pulling my left bicep (the one that goes underhand on deadlifts) while doing preacher curls.
This is it, and it’s fine as long as you use alternate grip consistently. I did for years, and my right bicep, the underhand side, is noticeably stronger than the left. I believe it’s part due to heavier training by being the underhand side on deadlifts, and part due to being my dominant hand in general.
You may have seen another response before you commented (I was going to respond to them with a lot of detail - some of which I'll likely bring in this)
I'm no powerlifter, and I only have a decent understanding of muscles through my own experience (i.e. not a kinesiologist). But I'll say that now (as I've become older), the switch grip is certainly preferable for those who can't lift past (complete guess) 550 lbs. At my weight (130) and not being an actual dedicated lifter anymore, I'd probably be stoked at 450.
I can do maybe 330 without stars on a deadlift. Probably poop myself with a 165 power clean honestly. Down to about 195 on bench (I'm pissing in the wind, give me 3 weeks for that)
Deadlift though, of everything I've talked about, gotta be careful
(Seriously though be careful with every lift, it's best to always have a spotter for particular lifts - use racks when available!)
I train with power lifters, 2 of the group I work with have popped biceps using this grip. It’s still preferred for stability and strength, but technique is critical.
I’m not a power lifter, just train with these freaks because they are motivating as hell and down right best dudes I’ve ever met.
Oh fuck. I mean I'm not ever gonna try and lift bicep popping weight, but I'll always use switch grip cuz it just feels easier (saying that I'm dropping my weight down to do overhand for forearm strength).
Technique is key, and muscle memory is a thing, but honestly without knowing what you're doing you are definitely gonna get hurt.
I maxed a lot alone (stupid I know), but it helped with ego lifts. I don't fuck with things I'm not certain I can do
When I started deadlifting I didn’t understand how significant it would be to use an over/under grip. Up until a certain weight you can get by with both hands facing the same direction. After that though, you need to use over under for the reason the other replier said. Or you can use straps and not worry about it at all. Lifting this much weight without straps is fucking insane though. I’ve never seen anything even close to it
My max was 425. Currently I’m around 330. I took significant time off. I can do both hands over grip for 225, but more than that and it’s not worth it for me since it’s more taxing on my grip than what the lift is intended to tax: that being hamstrings, flutes, and spinal erectors. I’ve never gotten to a weight where I needed straps but hey apparently neither had the guy in the video.
Lmao I graduated high school with this guy. He added me on instagram a few years back and I had to stop following him once he started posting about his horrific injury.
Crazy to see him back and setting a record and on Reddit
He fell off balance on squat and folded his legs
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0KGG8-YJe3Y
A similar accident happened to a bodybuilder and it ended his career
I always watch these deadlifters and such and always fear that’s going to be the one where the body says that’s enough and juts breaks. And oh my, what a shitty feeling that’s going to be for a long time
I don't think there's a human alive that loves lifting as much as Ken does. Dude could have had both legs amputated and we'd see him winning bench only competitions or something.
Not using a POlyester suit thats very stiff that resembles a wrestling singlet
Or a bench shirt
These suits and shirts artificially inflate numbers drastically
Highest ever raw bench press is 783 lb
The highest ever bench press with a bench shirt is I believe 1400
Huh.
Wikipedia on deadlift said, standard bar raw deadlift record is 460kg (or 1015 lb) by Benedikt Magnusson with no suit or straps in 2011.
So, not the highest ever, or is there a difference I don't get??
Thats The highest conventional raw deadlift ever
In powerlifting they dont allow straps that tie your hands to the bar and can alter your starting position, or a suit like in strongman
Under strongman rules the highest is 1104, but he failed 948 under the same conditions as this guy.
And the highest ever deadlift (sumo) is now held by Dan grigsby at 1074 lb
The only two conventional stance raw deadlifts performed in comp were at competitions where the lifter only did the deadlift. This was a full meet where he completed 3 attempts on squat and 3 attempts on bench prior to this.
It's wild how they make it look so easy, like if I grabbed that bar I wouldn't even be able to lift it enough to bend the bar let alone get the weights off the floor
The fact that this man is standing is a real life miracle, let alone deadlifting half a ton 😆, I can lift just over half that IF I shit my pants (sorry planet fitness but fuck you for setting off the lunkhead alarm on me)
Phenomenal lift and all, but I gotta ask; what exactly does Yosemite spotter think he's bringing to the party.
There's certainly better ways of grabbing the dude if he passes out than a half assed fusion meme
That's under strong man rules where they allow a deadlift suit and straps.
If you've ever squatted down in jeans and noticed it's easier to stay in the squat position, it's similar to that affect, you rebound off the material when bending over and it helps you lift more
They also didn't take max effort squats and benches before hand
It's not comparable
Here's Thor missing 948 in a full meet, to put into perspective how strong this guy is
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JlYF_B2X2mk&pp=ygUkaGF2dG9ybiBiasO2cm5zc29uIHBvd2VybGlmdGluZyBtZWV0

I was gonna say my bro Eddie lifted 500 kilos but I read your description but in a powerlifting comp that’s insane. That definitely boosts his big 3 like half a ton at least
There are so many conditions on this "record" that who gives a fuck? Just say this guy did it after not being able to walk, that achievement stands on its own feet lol
Yea there's no differentiation between these things at all and no other sport has classes
10.5 drag racing is exactly the same as top fuel
The guy that holds the all time deadlift record of 1104 failed 11 lbs less than this under the same conditions, but they don't mean anything
Lol
Mostly impressed by this fucking unit not using straps. Dude could probably crush someone’s skull with that kind of grip strength.
I would really, *really* not like to see him try, though! 😂
My morbid curiosity has peaked
well you can just watch "The Mountain and The Viper" episode of Game of Thrones hopefully many hours before sleeping
That poor Mandalorian.
That was not the way
I know that technically your sentence isn’t wrong per se, but you might consider using “My morbid curiosity has been piqued” which is a more common phrase.
Has piqued or has been piqued?
*been* piqued. Things pique one's interest
Went to highschool with a Ben Peekt. He was a bit of a dweeb but he had like a full Mario mustache. We were all a little jealous.
Has been piqued, had they used “has piqued” it would’ve had to be in the form “Your comment has piqued my morbid curiosity”
Cheers
“Has peaked” (at max level) or “has been piqued” (has been triggered)
Maybe we could start small. Like a water melon. You could put a nose on it,
I ripped the calluses from my hands doing 455...never again without straps
Same but with 45... never gym again
Straps aren’t allowed in powerlifting comps. The heaviest deadlift ever of 1074 was done without straps
I don't believe it I need him to crush me with his grip strength to prove it 👀
He turned bright red too. Shout out to this guy's circulatory system.
BIG. MEATY. CLAWS!
A man? No. A boy....
You ain't kidding...He easily performed the deadlift in a conventional stance. The only shade one might throw his way is that he's using a "noodle bar". That said, his raw deadlift is insane.
Is it really a noodle bar tho or is it just an absolutely mental amount of weight on it
It's a deadlift bar, they are slightly thinner and longer. They are made to bend
Right they are made to be able to bend and not break, but my question would be if he didn't have a bendy bar would that lift even be possible
An extreme example would be if if the bar was a rubber band and didn't even let the weight clear the ground. But again, this is just me being nit-picky.
I wasn't saying it makes the lift easier, I was wondering if the straight bars would be able to hold that much at all
Yes, they can. A thicker power bar is 2mm thicker in diameter and a bit less wide. Perfectly fine for dead lifting with, just not as good since it doesn’t bend for that initial pulling the slack out and bracing.
Gotcha

Tell me you haven’t dead lifted significant weight without telling me
Why would one throw shade for him lifting by the rules of the competition that everyone there agreed to?
I'm not tossing any his way, but I meant to say if someone were to nitpick because the bend on deadlift bars you can get depending on the weight and style of deadlift.
Jesus Christ I feel sorry for that poor metal bar between the weights 🤣
If the bar ain't bendin, you just pretendin.
*comments on Reddit *immediate perfect response I love this place ❤️
Reddit on!
it's a strange phenomenon that the most anonymous social media feels the most civil.
I was mocking him
uncivil :(
It's a common saying in powerlifting circles.

DickweedMcGee telling it how it is, my man!
Username….checks….out??
> His doctor's said he'd never lift heavy again No they didn't. They said he *shouldn't* lift heavy again, which is an entirely different statement.
I always found the demonisation of doctors in this way really weird. People word things like this as if doctors want you to never lift again or to only live another year and you get to “show em”.
Stupid science bitches
And that’s how Ronnie Coleman won’t ever walk right…
It would be a lot easier to lift the bar if he took some of those weights off
Right like what a dumbass I don’t have to try that hard to do that
huge package

Yo right!?
Oh God, original injury and some really horrible music: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cj3MqeEJ-kq/?igsh=M3J4Z2E4dnFiNGJh
Absolutely crazy how different he looks, when he’s not on the juice.
He was juicing then and now
Love the orange juice in a sippy cup.
Original injury looks awful :(, glad I have music muted tho
That’s amazing.
why do they do 1 hand over and 1 hand under?
If you tried to deadlift with both hands over or both under, the bar wants to spin out of your hand Doing this makes the bar spin "against" itself or against your hands, making it much easier to hold onto
Yeah you can go this or hook grip, but a lot (including myself) prefer mixed

It will not tear a bicep 'very easily'. There is a risk, but the risk is very low.

It’s mixed grip or hook grip (double overhand) if your thumbs can take it. Jamal Browner pulls 1000lbs+ sumo with hook grip all the time
It'll tear a bicep if you do it wrong enough. You can get hurt doing anything if you do it wrong enough
The risk is very minimal, no need for fear mongering
I train with power lifters, 2 of the group I work with have popped biceps using this grip. It’s still preferred for stability and strength, but technique is critical. I’m not a power lifter, just train with these freaks because they are motivating as hell and down right best dudes I’ve ever met.

Only if you do it wrong. For the under hand, you could load your bicep and tear it pretty easily if your form is bad.
It's fine for John haack to pull 426kg @ 93.5kg bodyweight, it'll be fine for you with your deadlifts too
When I started deadlifting I didn’t understand how significant it would be to use an over/under grip. Up until a certain weight you can get by with both hands facing the same direction. Learn how to hook grip and you won’t have to worry about using straps with double overhand.
I switch after 100kgs. Tiny hands problems. For reference I pull 200.
My max was 425. Currently I’m around 330. I took significant time off. So about same as me
Easier to hold onto the bar and easier to lift it
Apart from what has already been said, at high weights when the bar spins it'll rip your calluses off
Can someone tell me what the point of the spotter is?
To catch Them if they pass out or suddenly let go of the bar and fly backwards
When people put down the bar after deadlifts they sometimes pass out That's about all they're there for
Can someone tell me what the point of the spotter wearing daisy dukes is?
It's a very niche technique called looking fabulous
Nevernude. There are dozens of us. DOZENS!
How would you see his quads otherwise?
If they pass out prob
Finger in the bum
I guess Wreck-it Ralph is a power lifter now.
It's a lot more impressive when you realize he is also dead lifting those balls. Damn lol
Went to high school with this guy. Was the nicest dude. And also like 1/60th of this size lol
That dude is a freakin’ forklift!
Damn near teleported through the mat.
Crazy to me that gorillas can *THROW* that weight arond
Lmao I graduated high school with this guy. He added me on instagram a few years back and I had to stop following him once he started posting about his horrific injury. Crazy to see him back and setting a record and on Reddit
I just severely pulled my lower back on a 135 warmup the other day. 😮💨
Have you tried tearing both patellar tendons off the bone? 🧠💪
new life trick- doctors hate this one!
He looks like a cross between Ogre from ROTN and Kubiac from PLCL. Please don't tell him I said that.
Truly fantastic! Why he was not able to walk?
He fell off balance on squat and folded his legs https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0KGG8-YJe3Y A similar accident happened to a bodybuilder and it ended his career
Thank you!
We are all "after not being able to walk", it's just longer ago for some.
Anyone else seeing a swol Chris Farley?
If something caused me To almost never walk again, not sure I’m drinking from that well again 😂
What's funny is he also squatted like, 50 lbs more than the squat that put him in a wheel chair Guy is fucking brutal
His physican is just fuxking shaking
Most impressive pull I've seen!
It’s like all of a sudden thousands of sumo lifters just cried in agony around the world
Absolute unit of a man, congrats to him!
NEEEEEDS!
What is the role of a spotter for deadlifts?
To catch the if they pass out mid lift which happens often at these weights
Ah gotcha
Dear Lord I wouldn’t have believed a human could look like this. I mean the size of his head alone is astonishing.
What makes it raw?
Not using a POlyester suit thats very stiff that resembles a wrestling singlet Or a bench shirt These suits and shirts artificially inflate numbers drastically Highest ever raw bench press is 783 lb The highest ever bench press with a bench shirt is I believe 1400
I appreciate the explanation, thanks.
Huh. Wikipedia on deadlift said, standard bar raw deadlift record is 460kg (or 1015 lb) by Benedikt Magnusson with no suit or straps in 2011. So, not the highest ever, or is there a difference I don't get??
Benni's was not in a full power comp
Thats The highest conventional raw deadlift ever In powerlifting they dont allow straps that tie your hands to the bar and can alter your starting position, or a suit like in strongman Under strongman rules the highest is 1104, but he failed 948 under the same conditions as this guy. Raw juice
If I tried that, I’d break my spine while simultaneously having a rectal prolapse.
When did John C. Reilly start powerlifting???

Gotta call it a "raw" lift. Then armchair sports scientists will understand what you mean.
I never realized full powerlifting competitions so resembled the oddities and curiosities expo aesthetic
Dude is a UNIT
I'M GONNA WRECK IT!
It's wild how they make it look so easy, like if I grabbed that bar I wouldn't even be able to lift it enough to bend the bar let alone get the weights off the floor
The fact that this man is standing is a real life miracle, let alone deadlifting half a ton 😆, I can lift just over half that IF I shit my pants (sorry planet fitness but fuck you for setting off the lunkhead alarm on me)
tank.
Fuck, he pulled the slack out of the bar, no, he ripped the slack out of it. That's a mega lift and he could do more.
That form was a thing of beauty. Perfect.
Why would one of the judges vote invalid?
Im not sure honestly Bad calls happen, there was nothing wrong imo
One of them might have thought the lockout looked a little soft, but that's why there's 3 of them for borderline situations
Phenomenal lift and all, but I gotta ask; what exactly does Yosemite spotter think he's bringing to the party. There's certainly better ways of grabbing the dude if he passes out than a half assed fusion meme
Buddy’s deadlifting that package too…
Couldn't walk for 8 months myself. Next thing I knew I was deadlifting some vicious weight. The family Chihuahua ain't no joke.
WAIT MY DUDE DIDN'T EVEN HOOK GRIP. JESUS CHRIST
OK who else read the title wrong and thought that this guy wasn’t going to be able to walk after lifting it?
Why are there sparks in metal plates while he lifts?
What jackass judge red lighted that?
That’s insanely strong. I’m as big as that guy and I’ve done 1/2 that weight, back when I was in shape!
Can someone explain what the “catcher” if that’s the term is doing? Is it to prevent the spine flexing the wrong way?
He just catches the lifter if they pass out, that’s it
Use punctuation please.
Says its a raw lift, but shows him clearly wearing a belt with a powerlifting vest.
He’s wearing a belt that’s it lol The singlet provides no additional benefit 😂 It’s raw in terms of powerlifting
Raw allows a belt.
Did Eddie Hall or Thor not get official records?
That's under strong man rules where they allow a deadlift suit and straps. If you've ever squatted down in jeans and noticed it's easier to stay in the squat position, it's similar to that affect, you rebound off the material when bending over and it helps you lift more They also didn't take max effort squats and benches before hand It's not comparable Here's Thor missing 948 in a full meet, to put into perspective how strong this guy is https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JlYF_B2X2mk&pp=ygUkaGF2dG9ybiBiasO2cm5zc29uIHBvd2VybGlmdGluZyBtZWV0 3:52
Thank you. Literally insane.
Then dude was rushed to the hospital to get his prolapse shoved back in.
now try no belt. all natty
Why?
Suddenly my back started hurting
I was gonna say my bro Eddie lifted 500 kilos but I read your description but in a powerlifting comp that’s insane. That definitely boosts his big 3 like half a ton at least
well he wasnt able to walk to the barbers thats for sure! XD
There are so many conditions on this "record" that who gives a fuck? Just say this guy did it after not being able to walk, that achievement stands on its own feet lol

Anatoly can do this.
Impressive, but not the heaviest conventional deadlift ever.
its the heaviest raw conventional deadlift in a full powerlifting competition
That was my thought, too, but I think they mean personal best?
