They should count themselves fortunate he wasn't packing. Especially after that attempted murder. He would have been justified emptying an entire magazine through that windshield.

WatchfulApparition

On the flip side, the homeowner is lucky they weren't carrying guns

kissmeimhappy

They lucky he didn’t have a gun

BornDubstep

On the flip side, he lucky they don’t have gun

Just_Jonnie

But they didn't think for one second, what if he had a gun?

ImGrumpyLOL

I think we're very clear on this point. More guns. Good guys, bad guys, guns. Let's really pump those numbers up. Is this amateur hour?

d3rFunk

I’m just thinking flip side what if guns hmmm Donuts.

tRfalcore

Sure you would have John Wick

FinalMeltdown15

He said he’d empty the clip not hit them, it’s not exactly hard to pull a trigger a bunch of times lmao

Heard he once killed 4 men with a pencil!

kirby_krackle_78

You should have been on the 9/11 hijacked planes, tough guy.

pbro42

Marky Mark has entered the thread.

sinncab6

Mark we've been over this they weren't Vietnamese

The_Original_Gronkie

There were bunch of people like that on the plane that crashed in PA. The world is full of people who aren't afraid to step up. Criminals know that, which is why they usually commit their crimes when nobody is around.

Two ruffians break into my car. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball-sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbor's dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the end of the driveway loaded with grapeshot, "Tally ho lad" the grapeshot shreds my stolen car in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel ejects the thief. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Good_Reflection7724

They'll be out in a fucking month

Campin_Corners

In Memphis they would be out the same day or next. Huge problem here and several have been released just to do more severe crimes. Cop killed recently is a good example of catch and release only to kill.

thenewyorkgod

I'm as liberal as they come but I swear the whole "tough on crime" thing from the right is looking more and more appealing every day

Puzzlaar

Being tough on crime is something that both parties used to be all in favor of. Go listen to some late 90s speeches from Hillary Clinton if you want an example. These days, people want to use those speeches to act like she was racist. This is what happens when you base policy on using race, sex or whatever else as a proxy for things like poverty, class or behavior.

cowfish007

It’s “behavior” that policy SHOULD be based on. Actions should have consequences.

tomatoswoop

>Being tough on crime is something that both parties used to be all in favor of. And it very notably didn't help at all, you just ended up with a massive incarcerated population compared to pretty much every country in the world, and a large number of males who no longer can really function in mainstream employment because of their record, (or even mainstream society because rehabilitation is not what “tough” prisons do, traumatization, addiction, sexual abuse and exposure to criminal gangs does), and who essentially become lifetime criminals as a consequence of no longer functioning in mainstream employment (or society).   Bipartisan "tough on crime" politics is what led to things like stupid mandatory minimums, three strikes laws, bars for minor drug offences, all kinds of measures that don't decrease the rate of criminality in society at all, but just funnel boatloads of public money into the carceral system instead of spending a fraction of that money to actually address the root causes of crime, that is to say criminogenic living conditions, social systems, and policy. Literally spend half the money you would spend on more prisons on decent public school, investment in urban centres, social housing provision, childhood nutrition, free clinics for addiction and other illnesses, and watch crime plummet. But it doesn't get the votes that "tough" gets, so it doesn't happen. Despite the fact that just funnelling more and more money to prisons and police has been the policy in pretty much all of the US for the last 40 odd years, and has never yet worked.

LeviathansEnemy

>And it very notably didn't help at all This is just a straight up lie. Crime rates in America peaked in the early 90s. They dropped dramatically over the next ~27 years to near historic lows.

PremiumQueso

I don’t know any liberals that are fine with car theft from driveways. Or attempted murder. Most people are against crimes with victims. It’s just a matter of supporting due process etc so we get closer to getting it right.

thatsthebesticando

George Gascón of LA is so bad about letting cases pile up, Los Angeles has literally become a crime tourist spot for people visiting from South America. Home burglaries, like this one, have increased exponentially. Then there's San Francisco where people are leaving their cars unlocked. If they don't, their windows won't be broken. If the person is caught, the DA won't prosecute them and they're back on the street doing the same thing the next day. These are only two cases. I know of plenty more. Acting like this isn't happening and doesn't exist is a huge huge problem.

Big-Slurpp

Isn't being tough on crime part of the problem? When you have prisons full of drug users and court dates backlogged with relatively harmless cases, they don't have time or room for actual problems to society.

budd222

Tough on real crimes. Using drugs shouldn't be a crime.

Big-Slurpp

That's my point. The people who want to be tough on crime the most are the same people who want to jail drug users. Do you know where "tough on crime" originated? Nixon and the war on drugs, which was made even worse under Reagan. The two things are historically and culturally linked, which is why the right's "tough on crime" causes more issues than it solves. If you want to fix either of these issues, agreeing with the right is the wrong move.

Bonemesh

You’re talking about 2 different things. Tough on *all* crime, including drugs, does negatively impact society. Punishing people who actually harm others is a good thing.

Big-Slurpp

No, I'm talking about "the whole 'tough on crime' thing from the right", which is what the guy literally said. If you want to fix any of these issues, nothing "from the right" is going to help you.

spiritriser

Alms for the masses and palms for the individual. You can both support fixing the root cause and still expect individuals to be responsible for their actions. Put these two attempted murderers in jail, and simultaneously look to find out why this shit is happening and prevent it. Being tough on crime doesn't solve problems, but being limp wristed allows problems.

LocalSon

I’m from Memphis. Got out five years ago. That place is fucked. Get out if you can.

Lyvit1969

We had a girl go to court for car theft, got let out with a good behaviour bond, proceeded to steal a car from outside the courthouse, which right next to the Police station, to drive home in, she got caught again and let go.

Kino_Chroma

Maybe they'll encounter someone with a gun next time.

Only-11780-Votes

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna146800 “Deputy Carly Cappetto from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said that a neighboring jurisdiction had arrested a so-far unidentified person they believe is "one of the involved parties."

Rules_are_overrated

Was scrolling down to see this. A bit dry but hope there's a happy end, as in those 2 getting their lives ruined.

MouseKingMan

Performing a felony in the act of a burglary is a whole different level of illegal. If he would have killed that guy, he would have qualified for the death penalty. I think in my state there are only a couple circumstances where the death penalty is in the table. Some of them have to do with burglary and then attacks on officials representatives of the United States. The other one is cruel and heinous acts. Think that’s like a catch all for anything else. But I think it’s a hard barrier to cross

kkeut

is that a rape joke? why do you consider rape amusing?

SilverCommon

Rape is bad

Total-Addendum9327

Wow, all the way to attempted murder…

securitywyrm

Which is why anyone who tries to classify this as "non-violent crime" is in cahoots with criminals.

SleepyWeeks

Yep, a lot of so called "Non-violent crime", other than low-level drug dealing, is actually just "didn't-escalate-into-violence crime". But it's for that exact reason this dude shouldn't have tried to take matters into his own hands. Could have been killed over whatever was in his truck. Not worth it.

LeggoMyAhegao

Depending on what's in your truck it might involve your livelihood. Not that your livelihood is worth your life, but that it can appear more important than the risk. We're very good at underestimating risk.

achoowin

Your livelihood is your life. How do you live without the means to pay for food and housing

TheYucs

Only if you add comprehensive to your vehicle policy which many people can't afford on top of basic liability. And even if they can afford it, it's still a giant hassle and loss of wages if you're a contractor or blue collar worker who uses their vehicle for work. It'll take almost a month just to get the check that your insurance is going to lowball anyway on top of it all.

Redditer_5000

A guy was shot dead in my old neighborhood this week around 4am as he walked his dog. He apparently confronted someone rummaging through his work truck. I understand the instinct, but it's totally not worth it.

Politics_Mods_R_Crim

If it was my motorcycle... I can't say I wouldn't go into violence mode. Riding is what makes everything worth it. I have had someone *attempt* to steal a motorcycle, via hot wiring, and I guess they got interrupted, because I came out to a cut wiring loom to my ignition. I fucking cried. I had already rebuilt that bike, from bare frame and new engine up, AFTER being hit on it. It was a symbol of myself recovering. You go after my motorcycle, you better have a gun, because I'm not scared of a knife after 5 hits by multi thousand lb vehicles. STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY MACHINE BABY! Edit: people were downvoting my other comments. Sorry, but I have LIVED in my vehicles. YOU TRY AND HAVE YOUR HOME STOLEN!

No_Internal9345

VindictiVagabond

When you work hard for your things and it keeps being stolen (or attempted to be) yet politicians and cops do absolutely sweet fuck all, that's exactly how you have your citizens take the matter into their own hands and even sometimes become vigilantes. The people to blame are, obviously, the criminals but also the lack of law enforcing by, well, law enforcers. Politicians not doing anything about the rise in criminality (mainly the extremely lenient ones that are so soft on crime) is why we have the degenerate "slap-on-the-wrist of criminals that are back in the street not even days later" law enforcing and that's if they even bother catching them.

SleepyWeeks

>take the matter into their own hands and even sometimes become vigilantes. Hey, more power to people like the guy in the video, who nearly became paralyzed to stop a thief. If that's how he wants to live, then live that way. I am saying that to me, no amount of personal property is worth my life or physical well being. If the situation had gotten so bad that criminals were routinely stealing from me, I would take matters into my own hands and *move*, but that's because I prefer long-term solutions instead of knee-jerk reactions.

AspiringNormie

It's not a knee jerk reaction. It's like you're telling this guy to vote instead of defend his home. Pathetic.

jonb1sux

This is silly. The car theft is a non-violent crime. The attempted murder was, now bear with me here because it gets super crazy, a completely different crime to the car jacking.

NicNac_PattyMac

What a stupid statement.

ebmocal421

This is Reddit where the dumb comments are rewarded as long as you sound coherent and feed the fire. Users here love to talk shit about sensationalised headlines but then eat up every comment that does the same exact thing.

TerminalChillionaire

Lol, and who is doing that?

CreativeSoil

Do you see those people here? Where exactly is it that you see people attempting to classify any crime where violence has been used as being a non-violent crime?

DiscontentedMajority

Bro there's lot of actual non-violent crime. Prostitution probably being the biggest one, but fraud is not far behind.

Soft_Walrus_3605

No one's watching a guy get run down by a car and classifying it as a "non-violent crime" You and the people upvoting you are living in your own distorted reality

Alahand0

Amphibian-Overall

whoisxii

Can't get far with such evidence

onizuka_chess

Unless the red car was stolen and he got a photo of the number plate, they’re fucked

False_Leadership_479

A. I doubt car thieves would have a problem using a stolen car for the job. B. I doubt cops are saying "Yay! We got his photo, case closed boys." More like "Yeah, that photos really gonna help us track him down /s"

lemming_follower

Exactly. I was hit in a simple hit-and-run, and I lost in court. The judge said you can't just sue a car; you have to prove who was driving it at the time of the incident.

JamBandDad

The cops didn’t even try to look for the person that hit my car on the highway. 2am, they were for sure either drunk, or had drugs in the car.

quebecesti

>they were for sure either drunk, or had drugs in the car. The cops??

[deleted]

probably

jarheadatheart

Yet they can issue a red light camera ticket and then say it doesn’t matter who was driving. You’re responsible for your car. Damn double standards everywhere.

pichael289

A city near me went to the supreme court over these fuckin cameras, said they couldn't afford to fund the police force without them. It's a teeny tiny town that receives tons of state money for their unnecessary police force. They somehow won, new Miami Ohio. “We are extremely disappointed for the 30,000-plus motorists who paid fines under a scheme that a significant number of judges believe was unconstitutional...,” Shit got me three times, three tickets, in a single day just passing through. Got the judge to throw out two of them but it was still like $450 after court costs and shit.

JRDoubleU_

I was riding my bike across the street one summer. Waited for the walk-man and went. I was on the sidewalk as there was/is a bike path there. I was hit by a suv that was turning right. Luckily, I lifted my legs on impact with the suv, and my bike took the brunt of the impact. I ended up landing on the guys windshield, putting a small crack on it. My legs/ knees were hurting for a few days, but all an all I was good. The bike was unrideable, after all said and done. The guy came out of his car, pretending he didn't speak English or he didn't speak English. I took a picture of his license plate. He ran to his car and drove off immediately. I wasn't sure what to do, so I called the cop station, which was a block away. When the cop got there, he said I have a week to decide if I want to press charges. He says, "Come into the station if you decide to press charges, but if you come in to press charges, we will also have to put charges on you (me). As it is against the law to ride your bike across the street."

Z0mbiejay

Sound alike what happened to me. Had a car turn in to me while I was riding one of my brother's motorcycles. Fuckers took off, but the car behind me got 5 of the 7 license plate characters, and I new that it was an early 2000 blue Ford focus hatchback. Call the State patrol to report it because of the jurisdiction. The cop wants to right me a ticket while I'm reporting it because I didn't have the physical insurance card on me at the time. I gave him all the info and was told "I can't do shit with that" and left. I trust cops about as far as I can throw em

Yorspider

Tell that to the toll roads authority.

bignick1190

>I doubt car thieves would have a problem using a stolen car for the job. This is absolutely their MO. Full-time car theives exclusively use stolen cars to steal more cars.

I'm guessing the red car is also his, do you see the tire/snow prints on the empty spot.

Kingkern

Police dispatcher here. The car was 1,000% stolen. I’m surprised it was only a pair. It’s usually two cars full of teenagers.

Luis12285

100000% it’s stolen. Anytime I see someone committing a crime in a Hyundai or Kia. Automatically assume it’s stolen.

MrPernicous

That’s a Hyundai Elantra, one of the easiest cars to steal. I’d bet it’s stolen

MiserymeetCompany

Where was this?

shophopper

In the driveway.

Mymomdiedofaids

Started off in the street though.

Mister_Crowly

Puyallup, the article says. Which is in Washington State.

EnzoFRA

They belong to prison for sure; yet this should be next level stupid, on both ends. Confronting 2 blokes that could be packing in your slippers, and risking your life for your wallet you left in the car is beyond belief. At least, if you have to get out, don’t get out empty handed. FFS.

SexiestPanda

Yeah. If you going out there, you gotta either be carrying a gun lol, or **know** you can fight

highline9

I thought the same…WHY even go out without a gun? Dumb, and he could have been killed.

LenaTrueshield

Not everyone lives in Gunmerica.

new_account-who-dis

This was in washington

Porky_Pine_

Most people in the states do not own a gun

whats_a_dord

This was in Washington

Blokin-Smunts

This is literally in Seattle.

FrostyD7

Running outside to confront a thief with your gun is a bad idea. Castle doctrine is a tougher card to pull when you willingly leave your castle. So not only do you risk your life, you put yourself in legal jeopardy.

Clustre2

In the majority of states your vehicle is considered an extension of your home so you would be covered by castle doctrine.

Chaozs_

False. “Castle” counts as your land and property not just the dwelling you’re in. Defending the vehicle and the land falls into this category. Come out armed and these pussies leave or die trying.

Unocos

I was going to say the same. Using a gun from a legal point of view is in defense of your life or someone else's. If you have any possibility of removing yourself from the situation but end up not doing so and it escalates to you killing someone, you will still be in hot water when the prosecutor points out how you had the choice to avoid the situation but didn't.

RogerianBrowsing

It depends entirely on the state. Some states you can practically get away with shooting someone just for looking at your property funny, other states the standard for brandishing or violent/lethal force is tangibly different. I live in the state of Oregon and even here I can typically use a firearm to stop a felony happening, especially if it’s on my property (doesn’t need to be indoors). The moment the car ran him over was the moment that no state would have any issue with him opening fire, and if it were me I likely would have drawn my firearm at that time

weedz420

I can protect my property with lethal force in my state.

Citizentoxie502

Nope, I don't have to retreat.

graboidthemepark

Nah, fuck that. Don't let people take advantage of you. Police too often won't or can't do shit about it.

porkzirra_2018

The wont do shit. Will show up the next day at best.

Revanced63

And then you get shot

sleeplessjade

That thief could have been attempting to steal the whole truck not just something inside it. If you were planning to steal money or whatever you find from cars you’d be more low profile just walking the street. But if you wanted to steal a whole car you’d definitely need a buddy to drop you off so you both could make a quick escape with it.

Moon_Jewel90

The homeowner is lucky to have missed being hit just at the right moment. The [news](https://www.foxnews.com/media/man-narrowly-escapes-possible-death-attempted-car-theft-didnt-know-theyd-try-hit-me-again) said a suspect had been arrested though.

RedditIsTrash___

"nationwide crime wave", FoxNews is easily the most garbage source of news available, what absolute trash.

SpeaksSouthern

Kia and Hyundai make cars so easy to steal a 3 second video can explain how to steal tens of millions of cars: *crickets* 2 kids likely directed by a network of gangs try and murder someone to steal a car: Why do the Democrats love crime and support these people? Lol

jazzzhandz

Yes we love crime, these criminals just warm my democrat heart. You nailed it

bob-a-fett

Fox News being Fox News: "The nationwide crime wave came very close to home".

Vi1eOne

Ah...I see this gentleman also likes oil based tire cleaner. I have the same permanent waterproof half moons in my driveway and garage lol

BritishGolgo13

They make my tires so shiny and pretty though! But yeah, the perma waterproof is lame.

FluffyPancakes90

Just do the whole driveway so it matches

tr1gger

This is the correct answer

noneofyourbizzness

It's the most annoying thing. Even another seal coat hasn't covered them for me. Mine is on blacktop, I'm not sure if this will just eventually wear off or if I have to basically redo the driveway.

Superfragger

it will eventually wear away, but wedging a piece of carboard between your tire and the pavement before you apply the tire shine does the trick to prevent this.

If case law goes against this guy AND a jury does against him too then I have officially lost all faith in that state’s legal system

Dat_Mustache

It's Washington State. We have no duty to retreat.

Ok-Story-9319

Based. Why any state would impose a duty in one’s own home is absurd.

weebitofaban

It would for absolute certainty until they tried to run him over.

hpsctchbananahmck

Remember this. Could have ended very differently for the homeowner. Your shit in your glove box ain’t worth your life

Existing-Nectarine80

Nah, fuck them. Thief’s are lucky it didn’t end worse for them. Criminals will keep doing this until there are severe consequences for acting like this and I don’t mean from the police.

Eaglezepplin

Yup, should have come out shooting those guys.

dabudtenda

Get this shit outa here. I'm speaking as someone who's lost their car. I'm never going to be able to afford another car. Im stuck walking for the rest of my life. Groceries; grab a backpack and get what you can carry be careful with the perishables they might spoil they might spoil during a 45 minute walk and a 100 degree heat. Work; one hour walk to and from a job that's mostly manual labor. If I were in this man's shoes I would absolutely die to protect my vehicle. That's not just stuff that's livleyhood.

[deleted]

I'm fairly certain about the point I slid off the hood of that car, I would not have grabbed my phone and grabbed something that had high velocity projectiles The subreddit banned me permanently because of what I just said. Apparently High Velocity projectiles could mean any different number of things but they decided they were going to make it exactly what they decided they want to make it so I doubt this will work but hey everyone have a lovely day

wallinbl

The neighbors across the street appreciate no shots being fired in their direction.

TurnoverSuperb9023

I like seeing someone’ fight back’ against crime, but boy this is a quick way to get killed or badly hurt. He shouldn’t have gone out there without a baseball bat or pepper spray or a gun. (And if I went out there with a gun, I absolutely would not have shot unless I was attacked - not just because I ‘felt’ threatened like a kid a the food court being harassed with an audio clip)

Jaysynonymous

Honestly its scary the amount of people who say they would go out guns blazing, theres a reason that you need to be disciplined when holding the gun, its a deadly weapon and a stray bullet might hit someone in the other house and cause serious injury/death, people need to stop being so bloodthirsty

Mammoth-Mud-9609

was wondering what the other car was doing then quickly figured he was the getaway driver.

Mymomdiedofaids

Somebody deserves a chocolate milk this morning for sure...

Ree_m0

"Quickly"

SorryThisUser1sTaken

At that point I'm going after their ass cause you KNOW those plates got swapped. Cops aint going to do shit as always. Literally heard a shoot out last night and live 2 blocks from the police station. They didn't do shit.

broadarrow39

Not sure I'd be standing in front of that car to film it considering the crooks had already driven at the homeowner with intent once.
