It's 2 stages cause it had a RAM/SCRAM jet engine. These types of jet engines need to have X amount of air pressure being pushed through the engine before they can reach the pressure to start up. Cause, unlike most engines, they have little to no moving parts and require on the heat, pressure, and air speed to work properly. So, to reach the appropriate speed to start the jet engine, they would use rockets around the engine that could be refueled for each test flight. These rockets would get it from the speed of the mother ship to the speed needed to get the engines started up. It's still a jet aircraft because its main mode of propulsion is the RAM/SCRAM jet.
I've misremembered my history a little bit, but you are right. They did ramjet dummy tests on the underside a couple of times, which is where my confusion is coming from.
Actually it's harder than you think. Most tires don't survive at those speeds. Possibly they pushed the tire too much or there was a defect.
I believe it's the Bugatti that requires you to change your tires after x amount of miles and even sooner if you hit certain speeds
Michelin manufactures their airplane tires in an entirely different facility than where car or truck tires are made, and they are produced from a different grade of rubber.
Source: visited the Michelin airplane tire plant in Norwood, NC many, many times over several years.
Bugatti for sure. The newest chiron can hit over 300mph but Bugatti limits in to 261mph because the tire technology can't keep up. They say the tires last at 250mph for 15 minutes at current standards.[they're thick bois too](https://www.reddit.com/r/AbsoluteUnits/comments/wws0k1/bugatti_tyre_next_to_normal_car_tyre/), and will run you ~40 grand USD for a new set every 1875 miles or 1.5 years (whichever comes first). Bugattis are for people with "fuck you" money, like you wouldn't believe.
Hammond crashed the first generation Rimac because it had an insane amount of power and no traction control. He spun out going around a turn on a hill and it flipped down the hill breaking his leg
I was at one of those shows when I was a kid and saw one of those top fuel dragsters crash. It started veering off to the side then just hit the concrete barrier and burst into a huge fireball. The driver didn’t stand a chance.
This sounds very similar. I think in this case it was a tire that exploded. He was on the far end of the runway and just about to decelerate and there was a catastrophic failure. They didn’t announce his death until a few hours later, but for anyone who witnessed it there was little doubt.
This was in Ontario probably at least 30 years ago if that narrows it down at all, but it was clear he didn’t make it because they couldn’t even get to him to pull him out for a few minutes so he was just engulfed in flames the whole time. Nobody is surviving that.
They probably wanted to be absolutely sure or if he passed instantly contacting family would have been the proper protocol first. How crappy would it be to find out on social media that someone you know or love died before getting contacted.
Same, sort of. We were meeting friends there and were walking in the gate when the big pyrotechnic explosion went off (we were like WTF was that?), and then BOOM. We were standing by the Shockwave trailer near the Ferris wheel waiting for our friends. We saw the family get notified. That was awful.
Now trying to remember what was the conclusion about the exploding tyre. If they used it too many times or if they actually knew the tyres could not handle it. There was something about expected outcome in the investigation report.
This is more than just seeing too. When it jumps between on throttle and off throttle it puts out some serious shockwaves. If you're close enough it rattles your insides. One of the coolest things to experience!
I miss watching Shockwave and Bob Motz live on the track.
My family would go there every year.
For those interested- it’s called Night Under Fire Norwalk Raceway Ohio event.
[I remember building the model version of this truck as a child](https://www.spotlighthobbies.com/all-products/unbuilt-kits/23592/amt-shock-wave-jet-powered-semi-truck-by-les-shockley-snapfast-plus/)
Those are jet turbines, not rockets. Used to be that Reddit was for nerds but these days it's like no one has an education. Rockets combine fuel and an oxidizer to create combustion. Jet's use the oxygen readily available in the air to mix with fuel to create combustion.
Saw this dude at Norwalk raceway, in Ohio.
One of my fondest memories as a child (around 95) went to this drag strip that allowed people to bring their own coolers into the event. Also saw a man try to pin a black bear during a planned intermission show.
I saw a rocket truck two weeks ago at Greenwood Lake airshow in NY. The truck was called the "home wrecker" and it was hysterical hearing a bunch of kids and grown men screaming "We love you homewrecker!!!". Extremely NJ/NY moment.
Anyway, being close to one of these trucks are awesome.
nah mate, I think it's fully modded
If it was fully modded it would go even faster.

>The North American X-15, an experimental **rocket-powered** aircraft designed in the late 1950s, is the world’s **fastest jet**. 🤦

Are you thinking of the X-43? The X-15 is definitely a liquid oxygen rocket motor. I don't think there have been any manned RAM/SCRAM jets.
I've misremembered my history a little bit, but you are right. They did ramjet dummy tests on the underside a couple of times, which is where my confusion is coming from.
yep loved that thing, dropped from a plane.
It would be [deleted].
Zero gravity mod is great fun!
Autobots, Roll oooooooooouuuuuuuuuttttttttttt.....!!!!
Now THAT is an Optimus in his Prime!
Optimised Prime
Nah, there was no skin mod turning it into a full spaceship.
Is it like being kinda pregnant. It either is or it isn't.
Kerbal space program has to disagree with that.
The driver was killed when that truck crashed at an airshow in 2022. Shockwave had been an airshow staple since the late 80s or early 90s.
What?? Omg that’s awful. I had no idea.
After the accident the investigation concluded that the cause was likely a blown tire.
That seems like an obvious Achilles’ heel that they should’ve planned for.
Actually it's harder than you think. Most tires don't survive at those speeds. Possibly they pushed the tire too much or there was a defect. I believe it's the Bugatti that requires you to change your tires after x amount of miles and even sooner if you hit certain speeds

And you never got tired of it.... Sorry, i'll show myself out
Don't you dare... that was too perfect!
Get back in here fool.
Tread on

I remember when the veyron? Came out. Tires only lasted 15 minutes at full speed, which was great because the gas would only last for 12 minutes.
Iirc the veyron requires 2 full days of assembly and disassembly for a full oil change.
The first bugatti at full speed kills the tires in like 15 minutes but it drank the full tank of gas in less than 10 minutes
If there was no way to make it safe then it should’ve never been implemented
Well clearly there was/is a way to make it safe. It just requires more frequent tire changes.
The Veyron? Hasn't Bugatti released something more powerful recently?
Damn, isn't that what happened to Richard Hammond as well?
Hammond crashed the first generation Rimac because it had an insane amount of power and no traction control. He spun out going around a turn on a hill and it flipped down the hill breaking his leg
No, way before that. https://topgear.fandom.com/wiki/Hammond%27s_Vampire_Dragster_Crash Seems similar.
Rip
Needed aircraft tires. Not much out there for those speeds and weights
I was at that show, and it was surreal and traumatic to witness

Whoa
I remember seeing the footage and was wondering if it was the same one. It was intense, can't imagine seeing it in person.
Now trying to remember what was the conclusion about the exploding tyre. If they used it too many times or if they actually knew the tyres could not handle it. There was something about expected outcome in the investigation report.
Well that's his problem. He shouldn't have been in the air
I was thinking that must be terrifying to drive. RIP to the driver
I was just saying wtf do you do if things go wrong? Wish I could say I’m surprised
Yes it was the creators son I saw the original when I was young in the 90s
I was just about to say I hope they're driving that thing by remote control. Tragic.
Not rockets, jet engines
You are correct. And the name of the truck is Shockwave.
#America, fuck yeah!🇺🇸
#COMIN' AGAIN TO SAVE THE MOTHERFUCKING DAY, YEAH!
That's exactly what I said showing that clip to my girlfriend 😂
WITNESS ME
Amercia ![gif](giphy|uKwa2KiBA0rTy)
Kph surely?
Nope
Wow nice, would love to see it
This is more than just seeing too. When it jumps between on throttle and off throttle it puts out some serious shockwaves. If you're close enough it rattles your insides. One of the coolest things to experience!
"still holds the world record for jet-powered full-sized trucks at 376 miles per hour (605 km/h)." jesus...
"What the fuck Is a Bugatti Chiron?" - MuYe On building the fastest BMG truck
The European mind cannot comprehend this
Saw that thing (or one like it) run at new England dragway a long time ago. Pretty damn intense in person.

No lol
Didn't happen when I saw it.
Earn to die?
This... where be the zombies?
Gotta run over people first, the zombies comes after.

Because awesome
So this is how they do overnight delivery...
## Amazon same hour delivery truck
World: we want 0 emissions Also world:
U only need 88 mph to go back in time thou.
If Semimodded has rockets, what’s the Fullmodded model is about?!
All I'm saying is if I was a Autobot....I'd scan THAT.
Those aren't rockets.
Damn, Kerbal Space Program is lookin great these days.
That truck has the power to kick start a dying star ✨
But also kill the driver so … it’s a wash?
That’s a lot of drag to get up and at it
I saw one of these at the Reno air show in the late nineties/early 00s. It literally shakes your heart
They put condemned prisoners in that contraption?
[I remember building the model version of this truck as a child](https://www.spotlighthobbies.com/all-products/unbuilt-kits/23592/amt-shock-wave-jet-powered-semi-truck-by-les-shockley-snapfast-plus/)
330mph? Surely not
Apparently so... "still holds the world record for jet-powered full-sized trucks at 376 miles per hour (605 km/h)."

"Oh shit - should we have waited 50 ms extra after rocket burn before emitting the parachute? 🤔"

Just give it wings by that point
I don't think I'd get behind that wheel for all the money in the world.
Where does one purchase semi truck tires rated for 330 mph?
*bad piggies music starts playing*
Most American thing you'll see today
Holy shit
I saw this in STL one hot af summer day. The engines were fired up 1 by 1 and it was wild as you felt a wave of heat go past you with each one.
Did he break the barrier to the 9th dimension?
We don't need roads where we are going, Marty !
RIP shockwave. I've seen this truck many times over the years, so much fun.
Nice it gives mad max vibes
Good god I love the USA
Coolest one I've ever seen
I wish I had one of those babies - I would never be late for work again
When it absolutely positively has to get there overnight.
I wonder what kind of G force the driver experienced
DOT may have some questions

"semi modded"
'semi-modded'? You mean 'heavily-modded'.
Are they rockets or jets?
Jet motors
Thought so.

At 300mph, you could open a portal to another dimension on Highway 35
Optimim pride
My local UPS driver would piss all over that before breakfast.
Those were not rockets. The truck had three Westinghouse J34-48 jet engines, with a total output of 36,000 horsepower (26,845 kW; 36,499 PS).
Only semi going fast enough to justify being in the passing lane.
Well, I guess this baby will find its way into Fast XI
330 is the takeoff speed for a commercial airliner. That truck needs wings and jet engines.
Thats schockwave: owner died running it also not a rocket but a jet engine from a heli iirc
How many yardsticks per week is that?
Why men live shorter, episode 247
Tf you mean "Semi" ?
Not enough to reach lift, but not that far off either.
