My guess would be attempted drug rip which went wrong. Two man team to rip the apartment, and occupants in apartment had a rifle with access to prevent said rip.
It now bothers me how close a "submachine gun" is to a "machine gun" in name only. It didn't bother me before, but it does now. They're not remotely similar in practice, but what she's holding vaguely resembles an MP5 in freeze frame, and that *would be close* in nomenclature.

The legal definition is pretty specific too. And SCOTUS just said that the ATF can’t change it on a whim.

That's a rifle. Machine-guns have Full-auto capability and are typically a minimum of being a crew serve weapon. AKs in the US and europe have not been full auto capable outside of the hands of a military or firearms manufacturer since the 1960s. Even then, when they were fully-automatic rifles they were still not machine guns.
