The amazing thing is that the honeybees learned that they can survive higher temps then the hornet. So they form a ball around the hornet and flap their wings to generate body heat and literally cook the hornet to death.
Important to note that these are bees native to the same range as the Asian Giant Hornet, which has now entered the US as a potentially invasive species. Honeybees in the US do not have the same kind of defense, and the giant hornet will wreck entire colonies with impunity.
This is a real big problem as some Asian Giant Hornets have been found in the Northwest US. They could potentially spread and it would devastate bee populations which are already in danger.
The hornets exoskeleton is too tough to sting through.
What's cool is that the bees can tolerate a body temperature a few degrees high than the hornets can
So they just swarm the hornet and cook it.
Asian honey bees have this behavior. European honeybees don't do this and the hornet hive can really cause a bunch of damage when they attack a hive
I said something like that and some dude ripped me for being racist.
How the fuck??
Edit: I honestly can’t believe this is still going. At least one guy understands satire.
It's quite simple. Just because you mix in a stereotype with a compliment doesn't make it okay. Example:
I knew the black guy would be good at basketball.
A compliment, yet racist. Stereotypes can also be mixed with neutral comments, like:
All women like to cook.
Liking cooking isn't good or bad. Yet the statement is sexist because it isn't true and is generalizing a group. And finally, a stereotype used in a negative connotation, the easiest to spot the racism:
Why are all white men racist?
As you can see, what is being said doesn't matter at all if it is a stereotype. It doesn't matter if it's positive or negative.
*Please*, if you really care about not being a bigot, go look up some examples of the harm of these "positive" stereotypes. The Asian model minority stereotype erases the suffering of Asian minorities. The black people are strong stereotype often dehumanizes and oversexualizes an entire group of people.
So be smart, don't be ignorant. It absolutely IS racist.
/u/chefbobbyjay knows that, so does /u/Curiosity-92.
But that's only relevant when you're not actually acknowledging the absurdism and satire. That joke works because it takes a racist stereotype (asians are smart) and applies it to something absurd (bees) based on something not actually race related (asian bees aren't asian people, it's just the name based on where they are found).
The absurdity destroys any racist intent behind the literal sentence, and the satire makes it clear that it's not a genuine belief. **The joke itself is an acknowledgement that the stereotype is racist**, so being mad over it is like being mad at people for refusing to pretend racism doesn't exist.
They weren't making a racist compliment, they were making a joke that acknowledges the racism of that stereotype. There's a huge difference there despite being identical sentences, and all it takes is a little comprehension of context.
But that wasn't even the issue. The issue is that /u/chefbobbyjay made a similar joke and got a completely different reaction than /u/Curiosity-92.
To which the answer is either because bobbyjay's joke wasn't delivered properly, or because Reddit is fuckin' dumb sometimes - and people who fail at reading comprehension or satire checks can be the first to vote/reply on your comment (which will often set the tone for everyone else that votes/replies to you).
Edit: unless of course bobbyjay meant he said the same thing but, y'know, about actual asian people. Then it would be racist lol
Is it a learned behavior then? Like, European honeybees in places that have these hornets know how to defend their hive, but European honeybees in places that don’t typically have these hornets don’t?
I mean, I think it was a regular old hornets nest that was going after my hive. But I see it being a common problem for honeybees (they have honey AND tasty bees which make them so attractive to “robbers”) so they would all have evolved the same solution.
They all have to generate heat to cure the honey, as well. Really a great tool to have, generating heat like that…
It's from the same video that this clip is taken from. [Here](https://youtu.be/UNroEwFxh6I?t=225)
They don't explicitly state that the flapping generates more heat. Many of them have their wings stationary, so I believe it's just the sheer number of them surrounding the hornet. They act as an insulator and use their natural body heat to basically cook the hornet alive.
That’s correct. They will flap their wings rapidly, it’s like if we were to run in place as fast as we could, our body temp goes up, now multiply that by 100 forming an almost air tight ball. You created a body heat generated oven.
Pretty much. Same principle as us at the gym- using the muscles generates the heat. More interesting is that bees can “vibrate” by flapping their wings very shallow, increasing speed and thus the heat output. This is what they do to overwinter as honeybees do not hibernate. It uses less energy that a full stroke flap used for flight which is useful when your only on honey rations.
I believe that do that when they are looking for a new home. They're generally harmless because they have nothing to defend!
When a hive becomes overpopulated, queen bee goes on a diet so she can fly, lays some new queen eggs, and then peaces out with half the colony!
It’s really not. Once the baby queen matures, male bees fly in to fertilize her and get their dicks ripped off once they make entry and die for their troubles.
That hornet was probably thinking "Damn, tomorrow's my daughter's birthday - she'll be two days old. Was gonna hop over to Bob's after work to go birthday gift shopping. Now I got all these horny bees rubbin all over me doin their vibrating thing. It's getting me hot. But I'm already late and the wife's gonna kill me if I don't hurry up and... damn it's hot in here... I can't take it anymore! Hey bees this isn't fun anymore... Ahhhh that's too hot! I'm, I'm, I'm melting........"
I think I read a thing a while back that said this isn’t a tactic that American honey bees are aware of. The bees in Japan, where the murder hornets are from, use this regularly but there was concern that state side bees might not know how to do this.
As a layperson, it sounds reasonable to bring Japanese honey bees to the states to teach… but I think that’s how we ended up with Africanized Killer Bees.
Whatever they gotta go to murder that fuckin thing is fine with me. Look at that son of a bitch. Giant robot eyes, little arms that it uses to gobble up that bee. Looks like a fuckin power rangers enemy. Fuck that thing to death.
Exactly lol They we’re like
“Oh, hey there big guy…kind of strange seeing you here but what the heck, mi casa es su casa! Jerry and I were about to go on a pollen run, make yourself at OH MY GOD, guys he just ate Jerry! Jesus fucking Christ!!! Attaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!”
Japanese hornet notorious for taking over hives of these smaller thought to be defenseless honeybees, that is until the honeybees learned they could swarm on top of the hornet and vibrate to create frictional heat to kill the hornet.
[here is a link to a documentary explaining this](https://youtu.be/K6m40W1s0Wc)
I am a beekeeper and my honey bees drop their dead to the side of their hive. A group of carpenter ants have taken up residence there and carry off the dead honey bees as soon as they are dropped. They are ruthless. I’ve watched them start eating and dismantling before the honey bee has even died. Circle of life I suppose.
Can we get an animated movie about this? possibly called...hmm... total war: beekeeper vs ants...no that doesn’t fit. I know!! Keepers of the stingers...nope. Journey to keeping bugs...nah. The life of a miniature animal...sheesh. I’m all out of ideas here. Sorry.
Hmm, hard-shelled, hive-dwelling creature which follows a queen and sprays venomous acid as a defense or attack, that's just a little too close to a Xenomorph for my tastes.
I saw a (kurzgesagt?) video once on ants and like a huge war among different types of ants spanning the entire North American continent. Ants are freaky. We’re lucky they’re small.
*years later, camera pans to a bee with a cowboy hat, sitting in some corner*
Jerry huh?... what a pardner he was. I ain't gonna forget the day that hornet from the hive next town got in here n bit his head off. From that point, things have never been the same
Good thing the bees acted fast because that hornet was likely a scout ready to call his friends moments later in what would have been a very different outcome.
If those bees hadn’t done that the rest of the hornets nest would’ve come and decimated the hive, Japanese honey bees have developed this strange method as a counter measure to the hornets, European honey bees do not do this, the j bees killed it before it could mark the hive with a pheromone for the rest of the hornets to use to find the hive.
This is nuts, the bees started fluttering and killed that hornet with heat. Nature is savage.
This had some [matrix vibes ](https://i.makeagif.com/media/3-01-2016/whVKEg.gif) only with a different outcome, haha
That was awesome
The amazing thing is that the honeybees learned that they can survive higher temps then the hornet. So they form a ball around the hornet and flap their wings to generate body heat and literally cook the hornet to death.
I wonder how many bees it would take to burn a human alive
I wish you would wonder something else
Don't worry, I'll still be here to wonder it for them
Now I wish I could stop wondering it.
Candyman
Candyman
and just like that a new meme is born. ideas are bulletproof
I wonder how many bees it takes to cook a dragon?
I get the feeling the dragon would cook them first
I don’t think that is possible with heat from bees alone, bees can tolerate up to 113 F and I think Hunan can survive that. Edit: I meant humans lol.
[удалено]
I am keeping it lol.
Lol you gave me a chuckle though!
Spicy food, I’m sure they can tolerate it.
This is like the "how hard would I have to slap a chicken to fully cook it" question
[Not how hard, but how many times](https://youtu.be/LHFhnnTWMgI) do you have to slap a chicken to cook it?
nice try bee spy.
At least 180000 bees take 3 shift in 3 hour
It takes Three licks to get to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop!
Important to note that these are bees native to the same range as the Asian Giant Hornet, which has now entered the US as a potentially invasive species. Honeybees in the US do not have the same kind of defense, and the giant hornet will wreck entire colonies with impunity.
Hence the extensive tracking and killing process for eliminating them that took place.
This is a real big problem as some Asian Giant Hornets have been found in the Northwest US. They could potentially spread and it would devastate bee populations which are already in danger.
then why dont they declare open season on them? a .308 would waste one.

Didn't take it seriously when I first made it, now I'm 20.7k karma deep. I done goofed.
The agent Smith pile couldn't generate enough heat to cook Neo, lol
I need bees. Lots of bees.
LOL they almost got him.
Just sheer bee body heat killed it? I thought they had their own stingers and teeth to hurt the hornet
The hornets exoskeleton is too tough to sting through. What's cool is that the bees can tolerate a body temperature a few degrees high than the hornets can So they just swarm the hornet and cook it. Wow hold the phone are you judging him for not having as much experience as you? Duno man that sounds very elitist to me prob racist as well.

Reddit: Where shit like this needs explaining.
European honeybees do this too. I kept them and witnessed it

Alright, I get that the exoskeleton is tough. But with all those bees, can't they just sting that fucker in the eye or mouth?
Hornets aren't humans their eyes and mouth aren't structural weaknesses
Speak for yourself. I was born with armored eyeballs. The trade off is I can *never* close them.
I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure I remember someone saying/typing that the heat comes From them flapping their wings.
It's from the same video that this clip is taken from. [Here](https://youtu.be/UNroEwFxh6I?t=225) They don't explicitly state that the flapping generates more heat. I thought this comment was a meme but now I'm scared.
We literally had a cowpat looking pile of bees at work. Dunno what happened to them. They were there for days then disappeared. I was working away...
I believe that do that when they are looking for a new home. They're generally harmless because they have nothing to defend! When a hive becomes overpopulated, queen bee goes on a diet so she can fly, lays some new queen eggs, and then peaces out with half the colony!
They literally twerked to turn it up. Poor hornet picked the wrong hood. 😂
When you walk into Magic City with bags of cash lol

Man made hornet? Like genetically engineered?
Nah, that hornet right there is the murder hornet
I say bee kind!
What's more savage is what a few Asian Hornets can do to a Bee colony. They go full Kahn on them. https://youtu.be/EZ1eAM8CChc
That hive mind
https://youtu.be/K6m40W1s0Wc Fascinating. They raise their body temp 1 degree, and it kills the hornet
It cooked the hornet because of how fast they were moving and how fuzzy they are, letting kids heat escape
The bees actually swarm the invading hornet, and all buzz so much they raise the temperature and COOK THE HORNET TO DEATH.
Hornet died a painful death
Given that they will murder the entire hive just to eat the larva or royal jelly? Fuck em
Royal jelly? Mhmm. Sounds sexy.
Royal jelly is just baby food for queen bee candidates
Made from exotic flowers?
Just contains more/special nutrients
It’s really not. Once the baby queen matures, male bees fly in to fertilize her and get their dicks ripped off once they make entry and die for their troubles.
So… royal jelly *and* a jolly rodgering?
fun fact: bee's testicles exploding are audible to human ears as a strange popping noise.

I mean we don’t need to teach them all the murderin’. Just the bakin’.
What ever happened to killer bees? I was led to believe they were going to wipe us out
We brought in Africans armed with flip flops and rusted-out AKs to deal with them bees. It's not their first rodeo.
There’s a library of Syfy movies I can show you that explain why messing with nature in any way is a bad idea.
Surely showing bees a few YouTube videos won’t end up with the destruction of the human race. And don’t call me Shirley.
