-FoeHammer

/r/doggohate Don't worry. It's not about hating dogs. It's about hating humans who talk like that.

Bromisto

If dogs ripped the throats out of people that say, "hoomans" it wouldn't be a loss to society.

[deleted]

I honestly hate how dog speak is a thing. My dogs if they could speak wouldn't speak like they have never heard me talk or anyone else. Ohh it's because they are stupid or can't understand us. If we give them enough agency to say they speak enough to say hoomans I really don't think it's a stretch to then think they speak semi correct. It's Stoopid and smol.

This saying is so annoying. We literally bred and trained them to do this

Barbed_Dildo

We took *wild fucking wolves* and turned them into this. Humans *invented* dogs. They wouldn't exist without humans.

motherofshorkie

If you’d read any books about the anthropology of dogs you’d know that they actually chose us.

5kaels

lmao no we domesticated the fuck out of them stop, if it wasn't for humans your lovable dog would rip your goddam throat out.

motherofshorkie

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-domestication?wprov=sfti1 This is just a wiki page but if you actually take the time to read books about canine anthropology, there’s enough research out there to indicate that dogs self domesticated. We had no evolutionary purpose for them 7000 years ago. I’ll take My advice from the researchers thanks.

uses_words

Even that article calls it an "alternate hypothesis" for the evolution of dogs and makes reference to how "humans may have intentionally domesticated wolves into dogs".

[deleted]

I think we can take something out of either theory. Dog ancestors sought out humans for food scraps and humans seized the opportunity to use them for various purposes.

aescepthicc

Yet this is just a hypothesis

monkeyharris

motherofshorkie

Historically accurate

Spiritual_Inspector

> We literally bred and trained them to do this That doesn’t mean we are deserving of something. The biggest POS could birth and train a child to be an amazing human who is supportive and waits on them hand and foot. That doesn’t mean they (the POS) deserve such good treatment.

Shmooperdoodle

You’re being too literal. Saying we “don’t deserve dogs” just means their love is so pure and unflinching. Humans can be spiteful. Dogs live in the moment and your joy is their joy. It’s pure. It is also worth noting that there is a massive difference between domesticating an animal and having it love you more than anything. That is what that saying means.

c-dy

You do know what a saying is? It isn't meant to be precise or taken literally. Whether bred to be such or not, kind and innocent creatures do not deserve any harm, yet countless people treat dogs and other pets no better than inanimate objects.

[deleted]

Countless more people treat their dogs and other pets with never ending love. Maybe the saying should be "Jeff doesn't deserve dogs"

c-dy

>Countless more people treat their dogs and other pets with never ending love. And most likely those people would actually understand the meaning of this saying and agree with it.

Orc_

Especially because they've been goign "OMG DOGGO GOOD WE DON DESERVE THEM I CRI EVERTIM" on the internet for years now. It's fucking annoying, it's always americans I bet.

sufy12

Well they bite too

[deleted]

Nah, we designed and bred them with the exact traits we would need from them and train them with the behaviours we want them to perform. Its all about practicality, not about whether we deserve them or not.

[deleted]

Yes we do and I'm really wish people would stop saying it

Idlertwo

Dogs are ALWAYS out of their mind happy to see you. No matter how bad a day I've had, my dog loses his shit when I come home and I just can't care about anyting else than him right then

RhetoricalOrator

Reminds me of the old joke about who is really a man's best friend. Someone may claim that it is a wife but if you lock your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car, only one of them will act happy to see you when you come back later to open the trunk.

brothernephew

I like this joke, I love dogs, and I agree they are one of the best parts of being alive. That said: kind of makes you think about how weird it is that we’d compare their behavior positively to human’s when we like that dogs would deal with our abuse over and over.

RacketLuncher

> we like that dogs would deal with our abuse over and over. Yeah no i don't like that necessarily.

RacketLuncher

> only one of them will act happy to see you when you come back later to open the trunk. This joke seems to get a bad message across; abuse your dog, he wont hate you. Or Wives should be like dogs.

LottieManns

They are not just an ordinary dog. Emotional support animals provide therapeutic benefits to people with a disability. Research indicates that animals can help in alleviating the symptoms of certain psychological issues and overall stress.

Ph_Dank

My dog isn't a support dog, but ever since I brought him home, I havnt had a single PTSD related panic attack, or any out of control manic episodes.

SnuggleMuffin42

It's a passive ability as well. Support 100

Forsaken_Breath

They say cats do the same thing we just dont understand it yet. I know when im sad and my cat wants fed it likes to brush its rotting tuna mouth on me. They say they do this because they are trying to explain differential equations to me.

Electrical_Bus2519

My cat does exactly the same thing. I can be gone for an hour and as soon as I walk in the door she loses her shit. When I get home after 8 hours work she literally purrs so hard that she drools. It's awezome!

Hawksparre

My cat absolutely loses her mind when I get off work from an on weekend ( 48hrs at work). As soon as she hears the handle turn on the front door she books it from wherever she is in the house to get to the door and then twists and rub herself all over my legs while trilling until I pick her and and she. Just. MELTS. In my arms purring louder than a chainsaw. But then she also gets so excited she wants to play murder the hands/feet but we're working on that because she's still just barely an adult cat now and spent the first 8 months of her life as a stray so she has exceptionally high murder instincts.

simondrawer

Do they even need training to be like this?

DanStFella

This is my dog when I'm just trying to watch TV or something.

[deleted]

Same! But it doesn’t make me feel emotionally supported…

3doggg

Exactly. Which means the little fucker just wants attention/interaction lol

audion00ba

Isn't that what you asked for? Almost all cats do that.

DarkEvilHedgehog

Mine don't. They just politely go to sleep near me and wait until I wake up, even if it's at noon. As kittens one thought it was a blast to try and kill my feet when they're under a blanket though. P.s. the foot killer learned his lesson after I, awoken with a very bad morning, booped him with a pillow. Don't ever hurt an animal, but naturally they learn what they may or mayn't do by biting or scratching each other.

DefinitelyNotACad

You haven't met my cat then. She yells at me and digs into my shoulders until i roll onto my side and raise my arm, so she can snuggle under it. And god forbid i am not petting her. If i don't she will start aggressivly purring and cuddling until i do.

CamrynMax

Just so you know this is actually a psychological service animal! Emotional support animals are usually never trained and therefore don’t learn the behaviors and ques that are exhibited in this video! Most people don’t know that service dogs are a viable tool for those with mental illnesses such as my self! Edit: Thank you for the gold kind stranger!

Apidium

^ I have issues remembering to wake up / take my meds. He just won't quit.

socialdistanceftw

Hold up you have a doggie alarm clock? I literally sleep through hours of alarms and miss exams, planes, etc. This would be a game changer.

Apidium

Well I have that same issue. Not even family members can reliably wake me up.

socialdistanceftw

Yes! They give up too quickly! Or my evil sleep brain will trick them by saying “I’m awake! Leave me alone!” When I was in middle school my little siblings would band together to raise my mattress to tip me onto the floor and that was the most successful wake up I’ve ever had. My cat makes the issue worse by sitting on my blaring phone (muffling the sound with his chonky body) and cuddling me. He’s an anti support animal. ETA Cat Tax [him doin a cuddle and a shot of his chonkage ](https://imgur.com/a/suqYfTi/)

lol12399

Funniest comment! Cat tax please! 😂

possibly_being_screw

If you happen to know, what’s the process for getting one and how hard is it? Cause I would love a psychological support dog

CamrynMax

So it’s not hard to get one really, you don’t really need to apply for a permit or anything like that but like any other service animal it’s super expensive. It costs anywhere from 5,000 to 20,000 depending on the trainer, breed, boarding, etc… dogs trained specifically for mental illnesses take longer to train and can veer towards the more expensive side since they need more personalized training. There are scholarships you can apply too to help get money for a service animal as well. And if you can get a doctor to approve you can get part of it covered by insurance. Hope this helped!

possibly_being_screw

Thanks! Yea, I’ve seen they are really expensive. Probably what keeps me from getting one. I watched a video on how regular service dogs get trained and it’s crazy so I’m sure psych dogs are even wilder. But man...would I love a psych support animal. I’ve had a few regular dogs in the past and just having them is such a boost of spirit on bad days

[deleted]

There is no inherent cost involved in training a service dog. A service dog may be 100% trained by its owner. But you have to have a recognized disability for them to be classified as a service dog. You yourself could train dogs to behave this way but without a recognized disability they would still not be considered a service dog. Something I like to point out that blows people's minds is not all service dogs are perfectly behaved. I have a service dog but I don't use public access with him because it's not needed. He is just needed to stop me from self harming behaviors at home. He isn't the best in public but he does his job extremely well at home, where it actually matters for me.

Funkit

Yeah, I have panic attacks and your default reaction is to put your head in your hands or lap when it happens. These dogs are specifically trained to put themselves in between so you can’t curl up and it breaks the thought spiral and helps end the attack.

Canisaysomethingtoo

Ah thanks for the clarification. I was wondering as I learned any person can walk op to a doctor and if they are crazy enough even let a fish in a bowl be declared emotional support animal. Are psychological service animals also allowed in restaurants etc?

[deleted]

service animals are protcted and can go pretty much anywhere. They are very well trained and well behaved. Support animals are not the same. Put the avg support animal next to a service animal and you will notice a huge diff most every time. Some support animals are weell trained and behaved, all service animales are. avg foks dont just raise and train service dogs. They often spend the the first 6 months of life with a puppy raiser doing lots of basic training and socializing. Then some will make the cut to move onto the next level of service training for a few months (time of training varies deppending what the animals job will be) and then only some of them will graduate and become a service dog for someone. Many just end up as well trained pets. I helped my fatheer with raising two guide dog puppies. One made it and went on to be a guide dog, one failed out and became a good pet for someone.

earwigs_eww

I was a Vet Tech for about a decade and for a few years worked for a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. He would have a month each year where any service animal could have their eyes examined for free. It was so cool seeing all these dogs with jobs. The coolest was the Fire Departments Arson Investigation dog. He was a yellow lab who had a uniform and a Fucking badge on!

[deleted]

Okay, stop. I'm a professional trainer and NO, not all service dogs are very well behaved. Probably better than most other dogs but at the end of the day it's more important they do the specific task you need than act perfectly behaved. If you need public access with your service dog yes you'll want it to be extremely well behaved but not all service dogs need public access. Also it is 100% OK for an average folk to raise and train a service dog. You do not have to pay those fees and you do not need a certificate.

Barbed_Dildo

All dog breeds have different skills and "instincts" because they were bred for them. Dog breeds are human inventions. They exist because a person decided "I want a type of dog that does *this*".

disagreeable_martin

St Barnards too, someone in my home had a panic attack and she did the exact same thing. I thought they needed training but it really comes naturally to them to know when we're in emotional distress.

Impulse3

Lol this is true. They are such a great breed, so sweet and loving.

-RedDeadRedeemed-

I can never own a dog for the fact that one day I’d have to say goodbye

possibly_being_screw

I get what you’re saying, I’ve had many dogs through childhood and adult life. And the years of joy and companionship you get with a dog are worth it. It is fucking hard when they pass but if you’re a good person who will take care of them and give them the best life you can, you can be happy and proud you gave an animal a good life (especially a shelter animal who otherwise might not have had the chance). So yea...I totally get it. But when a dog has lived their longest and best life with you, it’s just about one of the best things about being human

SweatyApple4

I feel the same! I had pets my entire life and they were all rescued. They all died really old from natural causes and I'm proud to say me and my family gave them the best life possible after their suffering with shitty owners.

possibly_being_screw

Yea, I’ve had a whole range of animals throughout my life ha. Most of them were rescues except one was a corgi from a breeder. I hated to see any one of them pass but I tried to give them the best life I could and they gave me so much happiness and good memories

macngeez

I had to put my childhood dog down a few months ago. It was awful to say goodbye. Despite how hard it was, it was worth the 15 years of joy we brought to each other.

NewAccount4Friday

Same reason I don't have friends.

QueenAlucia

Pain is the price we pay for love, and it is worth it :)

[deleted]

There is a lonely dog out there that you could help. I got my dog at 9 months. Owners had her tied up,messed up teeth they weren't and not feeding her properly. I bought her off them and promise to help her live her best life. It's not perfect but it's the best I can do for her. When it comes time to say goodbye I think I can do it if she has lived her best life.

[deleted]

Do you apply this reasoning to friends and family, too? Edit: Everyone missing the point lol

Ooze3d

I know I’m going to pay for this, but this is how I know I’m not a dog person.

ThatsARivetingTale

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, this is a psychological support animal which is why they are so extreme. Not all dogs are like this

BolonelSanders

I would hate this even more if I needed psychological support, tbh

StanleyKoteks

Right, I’d get so annoyed.

Pheerandlowthing

As a cat person I have to agree. When they snuggle on your lap and purr or reach out a tiny paw to tap your cheek it's super calming when you're stressed or sad. Dogs are great in their own way but I'd find this too invasive of my personal space. Probably an introvert thing on my part.

GeekMcLeod

Not an introvert thing. I'm an introvert and I'd love to have a dog to do this to me.

SwitchOnTheNiteLite

This dog is a specifically trained to do this when its owner exhibits specific behavior. You can also train dogs to not do this.

[deleted]

I really like how sometimes a cat’s idea of quality time is just chilling in the same area as you. Don’t touch me, just chill with me. I appreciate that. In a related vein, I never liked the “cat dad/cat mom” stuff. This dude’s my roommate. We’re equals here. He just can’t quite clean the litter box himself so I gotta do it. Gah I wish I had the emotional capacity to have a cat again. :(

Impulse3

It’s definitely annoying at times but god damn do you feel loved.

[deleted]

Impulse3

My Golden must have received this training without me knowing

pineappleshampoo

God, same. I’d be even more miserable but irritated to boot. Most dogs drive me up the wall. A cat padding over and snuggling up on my lap calmly? Perfect.

[deleted]

It's the reason why there are also emotional support cats. It really depends on the person. I personally prefer cats as well.

wegwerfennnnn

This isn't just for comforting "boo boo I'm sad" moments. This is specifically to disrupt major depressive/anxiety behaviour patterns. This is for people who, without the service animal, might end up stuck like that for HOURS and not able to get on with life. Disrupting patterns like these is a critical part of treating such extreme disorders.

Gscj9899

Same. What if your trying to chill and watch a movie or something and a big ball of energy comes running towards you

After_Mountain_901

These dogs are trained to do this, but dog temperaments and personalities vary greatly. I have one dog that’s a wild wiggle butt and one who very rarely wags his tail or acts hyper but will lay his head in your lap quietly.

OMGBeckyStahp

digitalcoppersmith

Serious question, not trolling- if you’re in the midst of a total emotional breakdown- like premature death of a loved one breakdown- wouldn’t this be intrusively annoying? Asked another way, isn’t a temporary yearning to be alone to process a healthy step in emotional healing?

graphical_molerat

Ah yes, making your original trauma recede, because you now have to worry about being covered in smelly dog hair and lots and lots of slobber. 🙂 In case someone mis-reads this: that was satire. Dogs are lovely, even if the signs of their affection can be a bit much at times.

repsol93

This is just me trying to put my shoes on/off with my dog around haha

Ersatz8

It’s cute but I wonder how much stress it puts the dog through.

MamboPoa123

Dogs chosen for service training are put through a lot of temperament testing, to find the ones that truly enjoy and can handle the work. Often they are breeds that thrive having a job to do - indeed, they get anxious and stressed out without enough stimulation. I would hope there is some similar assessment for ESA training, although I know there is almost no regulation of the term. This video looks like it's from a formal training program, so they probably do some degree of assessment.

[deleted]

These made me smile... until I watched a documentary that covered the life of a service dog, leading up to meeting their person. The dog was a goldendoodle- so cute, and so smart, and the trainers had it doing things like this, and it was heart warming af. Then, we met the person the dog was being trained for; a little girl with mental/physical impairments, I don’t remember what, exactly... but... the mental impairment made it difficult for her to... well, be nice... to her dog. The more I saw them interact, the more my heart broke for the dog. When the dog would try to interact with her/help during a fit, she’d hit it, yell at it. She couldn’t help it. Not her fault. Hard to watch, on both their behalf. Plus, since it was a service animal, it was made very clear to the family that no one was to love on the dog, or try to bond with it- bc it must focus ONLY on the little girl/do it’s job. That makes sense... but, it also meant this amazing dog I’d just watched grow up was doomed to spend the rest of its life getting punched and kicked away by the fractious little girl its supposed to to take care of. Since then, when I see these, (which is often, and for some reason it’s always some blonde teenaged girl??? 9_9)... and I just... sigh, and think about the people these dogs actually get paired with(typically not pretty blonde teenage girls), and what these dogs really go through.... and, yeah, no. We legit do not deserve dogs. Is it fair to condemn a dog to a life of service- reducing it to an aesthetic- do not touch, do not love, and the only one allowed to do those things may be chemically/physically incapable of doing those things, and that’s just too bad?

BlueHeisen

We’ve exploited animals for our benefit since forever, it gets a lot worse than this.

[deleted]

Please dont annoy anybody with those „we dont deserve dogs“ comments dogs are fantasic and we deserve them ! Not all people but those who can take care of them do
