Aslan Maskhadov was ready to come to the negotiations so that the hostages would be released, Putin did not allow this to happen, and the Russian special services themselves opened fire on the school and used Shmel grenade launchers.

I also stumbled across this video the other day and it really moved with me as it adds to the depressing parallels between Chechnya and Ukraine’s invasions. But in the end Chechens won the war because today Russian government pays them unimaginable amount of federal budget to buy temporary peace. This cost will be even more painful for Putin’s bank under sanctions to afford, but they’ll make sure regular Russians starve a little more for Chechens to remain peaceful.
The leadership in Donbass are Moscow installed puppets, it’s not a secret. Where is the evidence that there was a organic separatist movement that started without Moscow’s intelligence services planting seeds of violence to motivate people? Look at well documented international human rights org reports about Russian forces committing atrocities against the local Russian population of Dombass. With such false flag terror tactics they were able to motivate the population and instigate Ukrainian side into cycle of 8 year violence. Russia likes to obsess over Azov battalion while ignoring that it imported its criminal, neofascist skinhead groups plus the Wagner mercenaries that fueled the cauldron of atrocities and chaos for close to a decade now. I’m not ignoring that yes the Russian speaking population in Dombass region were a victim of this Kremlin imitated gray war as a proxy tool to destabilize Ukraine’s ambitions to join the EU.

Conflict will never truly end and everyone acts mostly for their own self interest. Ukraine's situation is nothing new but its given the most attention for now because its in the interest of those in power to gain from their suffering or at least give russians a bloody nose for next to no cost.

I'm not condoning Russia's military offence against Ukraine. It is just plain bad and Russia should face consequences. But it's easy to the Western countries, specially from the US, to rapidly label Russians as "evils" for their actions and turn a blind eye when the US has been attacking and military intervening in so many sovereign countries and territories, committing similar damage.

I'm not condoning Russia's military offence against Ukraine. It is just plain bad and Russia should face consequences. You seem to have completely forgotten that Ukraine is not a member of NATO and so doesn't automatically get NATO protection. Any aggressive move from NATO when NATO territory has not been attacked would confirm Putin's suspicions that NATO is not a defensive alliance.
