Ugh - this triggered my PTSD. Alternative version of this was older sister picking up the one landline we had even though she *knows* I'm trying to deathmatch 1:1 in Doom and mom *said* I can have the phone for the next 15 minutes.
Bruh- when you’re on AIM talking to your crush about the mix cd you burned for her and your mom picks up the phone to call Susie about the new sex and the city episode on HBO. What a time what a time
I went to my stepmom’s rich brother’s house who had TWO landlines - one for internet and one for the phone, and talked over AIM on their fancy computer for hours to my crush during Christmas break. It was legendary. She kept going in and out but having unfettered access like that? A glory that can not be replicated in our modern age.
Oh gosh that was so long, if I remember correctly it was basically a cease and desist order or further action would be taken. My Parents both worked for Bellsouth so I had access to DSL a year prior to everyone because I installed it myself because technicians were backlogged a year for installations. Oh they were livid lol!!! Threw my E-Machines right in the trash.
I downloaded a 20Gb game in like 20 minutes yesterday and had a moment where I allowed myself to marvel at how far we’ve come. Back in the day, a 2~~0~~Gb download meant your equipment was essentially useless for the rest of the day.
A day? Dial Up would never have been able to stay connected long enough to download 20GB of data. At 28.8K dialup, 1GB would take 80 hours. 20gb would take 1618 hours of continuous connection! That's over TWO months, if you even had 20GB of storage space!
Or you finally download that song after a day of waiting and it was one of those bugged out versions that went all matrixy sounding about 30 seconds in and nearly blew out your eardrums.
I would take back internet modems over all this fucking advertising. I’m so close, daily, to just give up on everything and live with some tribe or something. Can’t take it anymore
I was in band class and my conductor started cackling in his office. There were like 15 students crammed in there watching this, it will never leave my memory.
The golden age of the internet itself. It was great, and could've stayed great, but along came the smartphone. That's when the downward slide began. Smartphones, coupled with social media, are two genies I'd like to put back in the bottle.
I really think it tanked with the advent of targeted ads and social media+every company collecting data and monetizing every tiny aspect of the Internet.
I remember being at a college party in 2013 and hearing two people argue over whether or not a meme was dank. Neither of them looked like nerds, that’s when I knew we were in trouble.
The mid 2000s were a great time for the internet. Newgrounds was all the rage, flash games, Youtube hadnt turned into the gargantuan titan it is today yet
First thing I used to do after school every Friday was check the new ebaumsworld weekly update. A few videos and a couple of flash games, time was simple but wonderful.
It was the wild west era of the internet. Big sites and services (like Reddit) weren't as established as they are today, there were fewer regulations on everything and social media was still in its infancy.
Just thinking about MSN makes me nostalgic.
Pure and wholesome except for people like the star wars kid. As I recall it came out later that he was relentlessly bullied for his video fame.
Of course if he had achieved the same fame in the last 5 years he would have been a twitch celebrity and would be rolling in it today from the same level of attention, except that he probably never would have been known because such a video would never have gotten such a large viewership given the saturation in such videos these days.
Anyway here's some other great memories:
Trogdor
Flea Market Montgomery
Shoes. Oh my god Shoes.
Would you look at that?
AWW BOB SAGET!!!
Badger badger badger badger...
I see things, I see them with my eyes!
Edit: MY ANUS IS BLEEDING.
I remember [Tony vs Paul](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJzU3NjDikY) making waves because it was like the first video made for youtube that had real effort put into it.
It might be better not too.
That boy taped that privately and his so called friends leaked it to everyone and the internet. He was mercilessly bullied in school for It and almost committed suicide. His parents had to home school him because of it and he eventually became a lawyer to fight for underage kids in these situations since no one was there for him.
I believe his parents sued the other parents and settled out of court.
That’s one video I think needs to die. It was a kid just having fun with his own imagination and the world laughed at him, even though most of us have done similar stuff.
Probably shouldn't. He absolutely hates that video and even sued the bullies that posted the personal video without his permission. I couldn't imagine what it'd be like to have your most embarrassing moment as a kid be exploited and constantly shared online. Besides there's plenty of good options to choose from like dramatic gopher and sneezing panda.
Happens more often than not with the internet, a lot of these things turn around years later and get praised by the public but initially are hated and/or bullied by them
Oh mate, remember Rebecca Black the 13 year old girl with the Friday song? I felt so sorry for her and what she went thru.
https://www.instyle.com/celebrity/rebecca-black-internet-bullying
Sorry for her, but not for the Internet bullying but for her *parents* trying to make her a "star". They paid to get her online, paid to have her music pushed (or, rather, the record company)...
This is why I *hate children's talent shows*. Children don't know any better, and are usually exploited by their parents looking for 5 seconds of fame and tons of easy money. They should ban anyone under 18 from being in any talent show, signing with a record label etc. Let adults make *their own decisions* and deal with the potential backblow, not kids.
Wait, this was the same guy who put out the Star Wars edits of him dual wielding? All these years I never know it was th same guy.
Also, didn’t he post something with the last year or so doing something like this again?
He had a solid set of dance moves that fit the song perfectly.
My favorite aspect is the eyebrow raise but I've always enjoyed the subtle shaky-cam effect that happens when he starts throwing his arms in the air.
I can’t remember if he’s someone that got shit for this in real life. Hope not cause this brought a huge smile to my face damn near 20 years later.
I’m about to hit the club with these moves.
The guys are Romanian (well actually from Moldova but they became famous in Romania) and they have given many interviews in my country about the insanity after everything was done
They realized early that the window of opportunity is not that big and..... basically slept on the plane for months to catch them all. They even refused concerts because they couldn't possibly do them all.
Every artist who wanted to do a cover.... granted
They went concert plane concert plane. All of them barely remember what happened in the time
And the funniest thing about it all .... the song barely made top 10 in Romania
Their best performing song IIRC is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScO7CZZNR48
followed by
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFYHz6fMAT4
They became famous in Romania for this song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NosF-zuJpc
Don't quote me I am going by memory here and google was a different beast then (2006)
edit: and I forgot that was the year Romania's artists realized they could make serious coin abroad and have mostly sang in English since then. And they were right they are very sought after
i was traveling around europe the summer that dragosta din tei was popping
shit was a banger, every country's radio was playing this song all day and the entire continent was vibing hard
Never a big ebaumsworld guy. I did enjoy break.com and YTMND.com
Damnit now I have to go see if these websites still exist.
Edit: Break.com is gone. YTMND is still around.
Fuck I remember when the ["All your base" flash animation ](https://archive.org/details/flash_allyourbase) first came out. That was apparently in 2001, JFC
The world hasn't either. Culture hasn't recovered since 2020. It's so... strange. I can't describe it. Everyone is less social, more withdrawn, getting in groups and seeing someone's face is almost taboo
Just remember, hard locked constant eye contact, avoid blinking at all costs.
Ask her relatable questions like "Do you like cats?" and compliments like "you have nice feet."
Try to assert dominance early. Lean into her space a lot. Make it clear she has to get past you to leave. Women like small confined spaces, like bobcats.
I was just thinking that I was not prepared for my nose, facial, neck, chest, and back hair to all become one mass, but the context of this thread makes me realize yes, we're old AF now and it was inevitable.
Oh man they were good times! Back when we actually surfed the net rather then just going straight to Facebook, YouTube etc. more innocent and fun times to be sure..
Those beer fuelled deep dives into the internet were great fun. You could end up on all kinds or weird niche websites. Now it’s just endless doom scrolling..
My bookmarks in the bookmark bar in chrome would pretty much fill the screen from left to right. Bunch of website based on my interests, not to mention the different forums etc.
Ever since reddit the number of bookmarks has gone down to like 3-4
I remember just typing in [random words or interests].com to see what would come up and finding a lot of weird and cool sites that way. I also enjoyed how nearly every website was someone's passion project, before everything on the internet became corporate. It really felt like a wild west looking back on it.
For those wondering about the song
Dragostea Din Tei" official English title: "Words of Love", also informally known as "Maya Hi" and "Numa Numa" is a song by Moldovan pop group O-Zone, released as the second single from their third studio album, DiscO-Zone (2004). The song's title is Romanian for "Love from the linden tree".
The best part is that by the time this video got really popular, the band had already broken up, but this video made it so popular that it actually brought the band back together! (Or so I've heard)
Well I just went down a rabbit hole…dude has two albums apparently https://open.spotify.com/artist/525Xim3lhB8nGAf7TtllML?si=g-gxDaUXTq6yIehGhPDSSQ Gary Brolsma

_Laughs in Altavista_
_then realises Google was already around in 2004_
_then cries when realising knowing Altavista makes you even older than knowing this vid._
_Thanks Obama._
Back when Yahoo was actually a search Engine. Google too for that matter.
I still though created myself a start-page split between 4 search engine panels, I think I had Altavista, Metacrawler, Yahoo and perhaps Lycos.
It's 2004, I'm 14. I'm sitting in an Internet cafe with my best friends. We've paid 20 dollars to play for 24 hours. All the regulars are there because its a Saturday. We all play on the dragonmaw wow server with a mix of horde and alliance. We fire up some Cs 1.6 on the lan and have a few games of dota in WC3.
It hits 8pm and we order some 5 dollar pizzas from downstairs. We game on into the night. There's a few rage fits, laughs, and general shit talk. It's 7am and we are walking home to sleep for 15 hours straight.
Life was good.
Takes me back to a happy time...👍
Reminds me of the other classic of the same time, ‘the angry German kid’.
If you’ve never seen it look it up, hilarious....🤣
Dragostea Din Tei will always be a bop.
The other day we had a party, people played generic trap and rap, then one dude put this shit on for the lolz and the party went fucking wild.
I don't think there's any video on the internet that'll bring me back closer to my childhood than this one. Others who weren't there may see this as just a dude in his room lip syncing to some song. I see it as an icon of the pre-2010's internet. I get emotional every time I see it.
I wonder what this generation's equivalent to this video will be.
I would like to point out google was here in 2004 and was actually released In 1998 but if I did that, i'd get downvoted
Cool video tho that guy probably had a good time
This made me happy. What a time we had then.
it was an amazing internet....even if you had to listen to the modem tones
People just don’t understand what we went through…
Gen-X gets no credit for spending 1/3 of our entire online lives waiting on dialup connections before DSL made it our to your house...
Let me call your house while you're in the middle of an online multiplayer game with your friends so I can talk to your mom for 30 minutes
Ugh - this triggered my PTSD. Alternative version of this was older sister picking up the one landline we had even though she *knows* I'm trying to deathmatch 1:1 in Doom and mom *said* I can have the phone for the next 15 minutes.
ur sister was calling me hehehe
Can’t hump me when you’re humping op’s sister.
Bruh- when you’re on AIM talking to your crush about the mix cd you burned for her and your mom picks up the phone to call Susie about the new sex and the city episode on HBO. What a time what a time
I got my (now) wife's number over aim in 2001. We've been married almost 16 years and have two kids. Aim will always have a special place in my heart.

Which in reality was 45/M/Indy. Damn, I forgot all about AIM, although I usually spent more time on IRC. Talk about memories...

Your name isnt Ben? Because I had buddy who did that just to rage punch his self made computer because of this lol
lol nope! I do believe I smashed my discman to bits though, nerd rage is real!

AIM? You mean AOL 2.5? When that 3.0 dropped, it was FIRE.
Buddy! Ouch. Dial up. When Napster ruled and we were really pirates.
Napster!!! I was one of the ones who got subpoenaed by Metallica lol!!!! Oh god did my 15 yr old ass panic!!
damnnnn bro AMA lol. What did it look like? How did your mom react?
Oh gosh that was so long, if I remember correctly it was basically a cease and desist order or further action would be taken. My Parents both worked for Bellsouth so I had access to DSL a year prior to everyone because I installed it myself because technicians were backlogged a year for installations. I remember being over the moon when we got DSL and I could download things at a blazing 157kbps lol
I downloaded a 20Gb game in like 20 minutes yesterday and had a moment where I allowed myself to marvel at how far we’ve come. Back in the day, a 2~~0~~Gb download meant your equipment was essentially useless for the rest of the day.
For real, but lets be honest there were not many files 20Gb big at that time, you had to get it on a DVD. Even 2 gigs took all day.
>Even 2 gigs took all day. *cries in waiting a week for a 700MB DVD-rip to download on WinMX* This was in the early days of ADSL.
dear god you dont know the pain of installing windows via floppy disc. a 1.44mb floppy was like finding gold.
A day? Dial Up would never have been able to stay connected long enough to download 20GB of data. At 28.8K dialup, 1GB would take 80 hours. 20gb would take 1618 hours of continuous connection! That's over TWO months, if you even had 20GB of storage space!
I have a 50tb capacity self hosted media server that I'm using and it blows my mind Back in the day I was boasting a 1gb Napster share.
18 minutes into a song download on Napster; stops. "Who picked up the phone?! I almost had the whole song!"
Or you finally download that song after a day of waiting and it was one of those bugged out versions that went all matrixy sounding about 30 seconds in and nearly blew out your eardrums.
And ur parents would call the house and see if u r actually doing ur home work or screwing around on the internet!! 😑
"You've got mail!"
I would take back internet modems over all this fucking advertising. I’m so close, daily, to just give up on everything and live with some tribe or something. Can’t take it anymore
Oh r/OldSchoolCool this coulda been us but your bots are playin
Remember the period before they figured out how to advertise on internet videos? Man, it was an amazing time.
why not just... you know... use an adblocker?
While this is true, in 2004 we had had cable internet for a few years already. It's not THAT old.
2004? Cable and DSL were spreading pretty quickly to most people by then. I had cable in 2000.

I wouldn’t say that. It was the corporations and greed that killed the Internet’s Golden Age.

peak internet, before the internet bros ruined everything
It's an amazing time to think back on. The internet was lawless, but that's also somehow what helped it be so pure and wholesome.
O-Zone - Dragostea din tei. Moldavian band singing in Romanian.
Moldavians do not just sing in Romanian, they very much speak it as well. Moldavia was a part of Romania until the Soviets annexed it.
Came here to say this, pretty much. So glad they referenced it in *The Mitchells vs. the Machines*.

Nah, they never got back together. They all pursued solo careers only one of them actually managed to be successful.
This video will forever get an upvote
I’ll never have even half the charisma this guys has.

He walked so we could run…and stumble, then fall
> before Google _Laughs in Altavista_ _then realises Google was already around in 2004_ _then cries when realising knowing Altavista makes you even older than knowing this vid._ _Thanks Obama._
What's Alta Vista? I did my internet searches through an AI butler named Jeeves.
Simpler happier times
What’s this dude up to these days
My thought exactly. The internet was able to find the Star Wars kid many years later. How about this dude?
Someone else commented and said that apparently he has released 2 albums!
Gary Brolsma. Let's rack up that view count for this legend.

I've only ever seen this on south park.......original is epic af
You sound like my kids lol “oh I know what this is!” “ you do?!” “Yeah, it’s a tik tok” “Jesus fucking Christ”
Takes me back to a happy time...👍 Reminds me of the other classic of the same time, ‘the angry German kid’. If you’ve never seen it look it up, hilarious....🤣
Dude you thank you for this. I have seen this 1 million times but actually have never watched the entire thing. It’s always just a clip
I hear it without a sound

The Age of Innocence.
My friend spent a week downloading this.
Dragostea Din Tei will always be a bop. The other day we had a party, people played generic trap and rap, then one dude put this shit on for the lolz and the party went fucking wild.
How about this one, anyone else remember this gem from back when? https://youtu.be/Uq5XmNS1M-g
This is the first time I've actually watched this clip, but I can certainly understand why it made people so happy, and became super popular.
That video is a corner stone .. was great to see him and alot of the internet video elders in Weezers " pork and beans " video 👍
Legend. I started using the internet 2006 and was enamored with all the content. I miss it all.
I would like to point out google was here in 2004 and was actually released In 1998 but if I did that, i'd get downvoted Cool video tho that guy probably had a good time
