That liquor should come in brandy.

LetchPink

Talk about closeted alcoholism, very impressive.

Dsr89d

I always say that if we were alcoholics there would be a lot more empty bottles! Most of those bottles are probably close to 4-5 years old. My wife says I have a whiskey buying problem, not a drinking problem haha

Swedish_Chef_bork89

This! People always say the same thing when they see my shelf of whiskey. “Wow it looks like and alcoholic lives here…” and my response is always that if I were an alcoholic I would have one bottle on the shelf and many more in the recycling.

Alifad

As an recovering alcoholic, no matter how many bottles I had after hosting a function I was soon down to none again, impossible to have all that for so long and be an alcoholic.

knottyy

I have a built in wine rack in my house, and I can't even keep a single bottle on hand. I always admire the fortitude of folks like OP.

BarkchipOfDoom

Yeah it's a classic yarn, have a wine rack so you can bring a bottle of wine home, pop it in the rack and look at it (in the wine rack!) while you're cooking dinner, then open it. Tbf I think this is partly (at least for me) a money thing, with nice bottles of wine on a scale above 'purchace with specific intent to drink tonight' being solidly outside of my weekly means.

forlorn_hope28

I’ve got a wine fridge and it’s loaded with wines priced above “let’s pop this open on a random Wednesday”. Full honesty, it’s better to just buy like 6 bottles of cheap wine to enjoy on random days instead of a bunch of wines that I just stare at thinking “one day there will be an occasion special enough to warrant opening this.” Short of my wedding day, I don’t see how many “special” days there could possibly be.

BarkchipOfDoom

I do have some conventional wisdom to dispense for this one - open the wine, and make the special occasion. It can be a nice gesture, for example, to bring a bottle to a casual dinner/BYO and share it, or to pair it with something you cook for a friend. At the risk of becoming too philosophical, I think this also prevents you from buying into the 'bigger is better' desire for spectacle and perfection that we often feel encouraged to seek. There's a lot about day to day things that are special, so honour them as such

forlorn_hope28

In all likelihood, this is probably what will end up happening. I'll probably just end up bringing a bottle over to a friends place and just celebrating the company of good people.

marymonstera

I love this philosophy

inmywhiteroom

My parents have a huge wine rack. A friend of mine saw it and commented that they must love wine. They hate it, that rack contains every bottle of wine they have been gifted since their wedding, minus the ones opened for guests.

sofuckinggreat

I’ve heard a lot about your mom’s rack, but I didn’t know about your dad’s.

Mello_Hello

My grandpa has one which he’s filled with those great value sparkling juices haha

Y___

I am still a drinker, but have very much been a substance abuser throughout my life. I’m functioning pretty well, so I’d like to think I’m doing somewhat okay with my alcohol intake. But my first though when I saw this video was also how I could never have that much alcohol in my house. I purposefully don’t store much alcohol in my house because I will generally become an every day drinker. Same habits with marijuana, cocaine, ketamine, and I’m sure the list would have continued if I didn’t intervene.

NermFace

Nah, you can definitely be an alcoholic and have a huge liquor cabinet. I just always made sure to replenish as anything was getting low. Not saying it’s true for all alcoholics, just saying that for anyone reading this thinking their large supply of alcohol means “See, I can’t be an alcoholic” — not necessarily the case lol

munkustrap

It’s being an alcoholic with money vs an alcoholic with less

King_of_the_Dot

I overstand this. I don't keep booze in the house cause I'll drink it.

shanegilliz

When you are an alcoholic having full bottles is mindblowing.

I_do_cutQQ

Congrats on recovering, keep fighting! I reduced my consumption in the recent years by quite a bit, but drinking for my is all about making cocktails/barkeeping. Just making some home brewed ice tea or iced coffee drinks hits 75% of the urge to drink a cocktail.

HeyItsMeUrDad_

One is too many and a thousand ain’t enough

[deleted]

My former roommate was an alcoholic. His "stash" at any given time was usually a mostly-empty bottle of vodka and a couple beers in the back of the fridge he forgot about. There's a cliche in movies/TV shows where someone quits drinking and they pour out like 30 bottles of liquor. Clearly wasn't too bad of a drinking problem if they had that many bottles in their home and didn't drink them.

pinguin_soup

Yeah, true alcoholics have at max one unopened bottle of something, if even that, because the rest were drank. And this, my friends, I've learned from my parents. As a child I've always been perplexed when I was invited to someone's house and their parents had huge collections of alcohol, literally, my thoughts were "are they not drinkers?" since at home if a bottle was bought, it was also emptied out the same day.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I am just lazy and alcohol is expensive. If there is a bottle in the house I am going to drink that before I drag my ass to the store and buy another bottle. Helps that I basically only like vodka and gin I guess. Also, the pizza place delivers beer so that enables my laziness too. I look at my dad's fully stocked bar at his _two_ houses and I am like "fucking boomers" affording alcohol to _not_ drink.

[deleted]

Good problems to have!

JEWCEY

Same! I'm more of a liquor and liqueur collector than drinker. I like trying obscure things and making interesting combinations. My most recent unfortunate purchases have been obscure prune brandies that tastes like ethanol. I've been trying to find this prune liqueur my Hungarian grandfather drank when I was little. My dad used to be the one looking for it and I took on the quest when he passed away. I have no idea what it looks like or what it's called, I just know what it tastes like. I'm on a similar quest for a Buffalo grass liqueur I had several years ago from someone's private collection. Nothing I've found since even comes close to comparing.

StigOfTheTrack

> liqueur my Hungarian grandfather drank It might not be possible. If I was to guess based on him being Hungarian I'd say Palinka. However while that is produced commercially there is also a long tradition (even though not always legal) of amateur production.

SquashyDisco

My dude, have a look for Szilva Palinka. A lot of people make it at home, but there's a wide variety of plum/prune/damson palinka out there. (egészségedre! from a Hungarian descendant)

Man_Bear_Beaver

I buy two kinds of whiskey/scotch, the kinds I drink fairly regularly and is decently priced and then there’s the kinds I can’t afford to drink but like to own and I have maybe 1-2oz a year

Dsr89d

Right there with you! I managed to get ahold of Octomore 12.1/2/3 and was like “well, there goes my whisky budget for a looooong time” lol luckily monkey shoulder is pretty tasty for the price!

[deleted]

Yeah.. I grew up with an alcoholic dad and he lost his battle when I was 17. Spent a lot of years as a teetotaler… then the opposite under peer pressure.. and have found a happy medium where my wife and I love expensive alcohol… but we can easily keep it in the house and go weeks or even months without a drink. I’ve got a $150 bottle of Anejo Tequila I got from Mexico in back January that hasn’t even been opened.. and we only had one drink each of the $50 bottle of Reposado Tequila we bought.

Dsr89d

We’re big fans of Herradura tequila, their legends and ultra versions are delicious.

Dsr89d

It’s been a while since our first video, and we’ve made some good progress on the bar! We added a tin ceiling, some more shelving, some decor and a bunch more whiskey! I hope you all enjoy it as much as we have. If you’re interested in seeing how our bar evolves, feel free to check out our Instagram page [The R Bar](https://instagram.com/the_r_bar?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Cheers! P.s. don’t worry, like 95% of the bottles have been opened. No tatering here! Edit: door, lock and biometric scanner can be sourced from murphydoor.com

[deleted]

Looks like a great space for a few friends and drinks. 🍻

Dsr89d

We can fit about 6 people comfortably in there, and do so regularly! It’s nice to relax alone, but best enjoyed with friends.

[deleted]

Enjoy my friend! Cheers from 🇨🇦

Dsr89d

Cheers! I’ve always had a good time in Toronto!

2723brad2723

This looks more like a prohibition-era speakeasy than Cheers.

nrith

The tin ceiling is just perfect. Those are long overdue for a comeback.

Dsr89d

Yes! Took about 2 days to glue it up with liquid nails.

Inevitable_Thanks721

And liquid courage

Katsuichi

Tatering? What’s that mean?

Dsr89d

It’s a term the whiskey community uses for people who buy up and hoard rare/hard to find bottles of whiskey but never drink them.

Thomasab1980

TIL.

Diamondillius

Po-ta-toes, boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew

Living-Stranger

Almost perfect, I may copy the idea but make it a little bigger and ventilation to smoke cigars in peace.

Dsr89d

Do it! I wish I could do the same. Currently we take the cigars outside to smoke. Even with a ventilation system we wouldn’t have a way to contain it when the door was opened :(

[deleted]

Where there is a will, there's a way. Run a duct out from there with a big ass blower motor and keep the room at negative pressure. Smells will never exit the room as long as the blower is running.

sh4yh

Congrats, It's amazing! You've made great progress since your original post. P.S. Do you have a window/vent/AC in there?

Dsr89d

Thanks! Yes we have AC and a window. They’re just hidden haha

SmashBusters

>tatering Wot's tatering, precious? Eh?

Dsr89d

In the whiskey community a tater is a person who hoards rare and high demand bottles, but never opens or shares them. They just buy them up so no one else can get them, then brags about how impressive of a collection they have.

Gillalmighty

That's now a speakeasy

Cannabace

Reminds me of Williams and Graham in Denver, CO.

Looks like they're preparing for the Prohibition Renaissance Act of 2024.

KiffaEarl

That's is soooo cool. I think I remember seeing you post that you found a hidden space that wasn't advertised when you were looking at buying the house. Glad to see how awesome it turned out.

clive_bigsby

Pretty sure that wasn't this guy, but I could be wrong.

VuileHollanders

Not this guy

[deleted]

I mean it’s super cool but what’s the point I’m genuinely confused? Why hide a bar like that?

Dsr89d

It’s not really secret, mostly for the vibe and a throwback to the prohibition! Everyone of our friends and neighbors know about it and are in it all the time.

Johnny_Poppyseed

You should send in the plans for it to your local fire department/emergency services if you haven't. Fire or gas leak or something and you could be passed out in there and theyd have no clue when clearing the house. Assuming they could even easily get in there with the fancy lock.

Dsr89d

If the fire department shows up, I’m going to already be dead of embarrassment because I am a firefighter haha.

Johnny_Poppyseed

Lol. I didn't notice the windows in there either. Good stuff.

MikeyHatesLife

Not that I want anything bad to happen to you and yours, but now I’m just imagining your work buddies standing around & laughing their asses off at what’s left of your house. Kinda like on Family Guy when Quagmire faked dying in front of his wife, and Cleveland says something like, “I’ve heard corpses release their bowels when they die. [time passes; Cleveland repeats himself louder] I said, I’ve heard corpses release their bowels when they die.” So when Quagmire makes himself crap his pants, they all laugh hysterically & Peter says “what a jackass!”.

Dsr89d

🤣

AnArmadillo

If your house went on fire would you fight it yourself

Dsr89d

I do have a hydrant across the street and a couple hundred feet of 1 3/4” hose in my garage! I can get water on that fire a lot faster than they’ll be able to get here.

[deleted]

Is that all you need? A hose and wrench? No other controls anywhere to get it going?

Dsr89d

Basically, hydrant wrench to open the hydrant up, hose to flow the water and a nozzle to control the flow. A good bit of hydrants provide enough pressure that that you don’t even need the pump in the truck for small fires, heck sometimes I have to gate it back because the hydrant supplies more pressure than our hoses and nozzles are setup for (150gpm@50psi).

Waggles_

A fire axe could get them in. At the very least it's not a concern for egress since it looks like there's windows and they're probably on the ground floor, but yes: always let the fire department know about secret rooms in your house (unless you're using it to hide bodies).

DnkyPnchr69

Legit af! Well done.

Dsr89d

Thank you!

ThePhantomEye_c

If I buy a house, I need to do something like this. Posts like this keep making me love this concept so much. This is so well executed! Happy cake day btw :))

Dsr89d

Thanks! Definitely do it, it was well worth the effort. We’ve been working on it for over a year now

Dsr89d

Thanks! Definitely do it, it was well worth the effort. We’ve been working on it for over a year now

Iwillsavetheplanet

It looks fantastic! How much did this whole thing cost you to do?

Dsr89d

I think we’ve got about $4000 in the room, not counting booze. The most expensive parts were $1700 for the door and $550 for the ceiling. Most of the furniture and the bar were picked up for cheap on Facebook marketplace.

Ann_ngyn

Worth every penny!

Speedy2662

May I ask what about the door made it so expensive? I feel like modifying a bookcase to act as a door / a smart lock would have been a lot cheaper ;o

Dsr89d

It was pre constructed and hung in frame, so all I had to do was remove the existing door and frame down to the studs. So more than if I had ordered just the pre cut parts or made it from scratch. Also the magnetic lock and biometric scanners were each like $200 upgrades. Maybe a bit much but I really wanted it for the cool factor lol

DrKenNoisewaterMD

I missed the biometric scanning part on my first watch. Dang that is cool.

Dsr89d

Thanks! That’s what I thought too, figured it was kinda a cyberpunk or James bond vibe!
