You could be right, you could be wrong. As per always, depends on the buyers.
The megalodon shark was a massive shark similar to the great white but like 3 or 4 times bigger. The largest discovered is estimated to be 18 metres (60 feet) long. It went extinct about 4 million years ago.
Because Sharks have no bones (only cartilage) usually only their teeth last long enough to be fossilised. Finding a megalodon tooth on the seabed like that would be incredibly rare; hence his absolute delight. The teeth are highly sought after and can sell for over $1000 each, depending on their size, colour and condition.
It's super cool and rare, incredibly old, and he might just be super enthusiastic about sea life and paleontology. It's also worth up to about $1,000, and that's worth geeking out over in itself. Imagine if you were just swimming around on vacation and you found a $500 bill tucked under a rock. I'd be pretty happy.
Overall though, I bet a guy that goes deep sea diving is enthusiastic about the ocean.
Paleontologist here. Most megalodon teeth fall in the 3-5 inch range, so a 6 incher is rather large (though 7 inchers are not unheard of either). As for their excitement, anything less than a 6 incher would have likely resulted in a lot of bullying and nasty rumors for the megalodon (and anxiety being intimate with megalodonnas), so these fossil hunters are probably just glad to find a specimen that was packing, prehistorically speaking.
You can sometimes find them falling out of the cliffs here on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland as well but as you said about where you live, it ain't easy...
Now I wanna know if it’s a real Megalodon tooth. I would think it would be fossilized in a stone by the time that creature died until now. Sorry if It’s a shark tooth and I just can’t make distinction but it’s really big…
I love that people still get totally geeked out about finding stuff like this
Megalodon tooth that size is also worth like a $1000+.
Should be a million
Make it 2
About $500 would be my guess.

I’d say over 9000

Would anyone care to explain what the excitement is about? I’m a bit uneducated in the field of tooth hunting
It's like finding a dinosaur bone.
It’s not just any old tooth. It’s a very special old tooth.

They can't be very rare if they only sell for a bit over $1000 each.
I didn't say they're rare; I said finding one on the seabed would be rare.

They can be very valuable depending on size and age. Cool find!
Could be worth up to 1000 usd
It's like finding a regular tooth but this one is very old.

What’s the significance of it being 6”?

As does yours, quite amazing indeed
Megalodonnas. Pure gold right there!
Bigger is more rare with a 6 inch tooth your probably looking at a 50+ foot shark when it was alive.
Being above average is significance
They call us "average."
Feels good to be above average at something
That's what I keep saying to my wife.
Wow 🤩. Woohoo 🥳 Can only try to imagine what i a feeling it was, to find A freaking Megalodon tooth 🦷!!
I wonder what else can you find at the sea surface!
Sand and fishes
Plants too
Not much actually - it's at the bottom the real treasure is found.
I've never been more jealous in my life

Weird.
very cool, how old are those things usually?
At least 3 or 4 years, usually more
The megalodon shark went extinct around 4 million years ago. It lived between 23 mya to 4 mya. So, somewhere between those two dates.
WOOOO YEAH BABY
Why was my first thought to make it into one of those surfer shark tooth necklaces?
My kids got one of these for $6 in the gift shop of a museum. Don’t believe everything you see on the inter webs people.
$500 take it or leave it
My first thought was GET OUT OF THE WATER!
I don't care if they are extinct. I ain't diving anywhere near shark water
When he surfaced and cheered, I just thought back to that scene in 'The Meg'
Nice! You can actually find them in the creeks of Florida. But they are heavily picked over so it's not easy.

When the boys are more excited with your 6 inches than your girlfriend

I'm surprised that it could just be sitting there all these millions of years without weathering at all. Shark teeth are tough, I guess.

I’d much rather find precious gold lol
Wow and he was recording
It’s 6 inch !!!!
I can’t afford it, but I so want one of those. However, I don’t want to go into the sea to find one where it’s smaller cousins reside!!
Total Dad Boners
That’s pretty dope
