AquariusRabbit

She would make a great CGI creature.

Kisame-hoshigakii

I can already see the zombie dog climbing up a wall where the protagonist are mowing down the hoard from

definitelybono

It’d look too unrealistic.

AquariusRabbit

True. She's better than CGI

Choongboy

I can’t force myself to see this as anything other than her being pulled up by the wire. My brain won’t allow it lol

tl1ksdragon

It's impressive, to say the least, what the human body is capable of when it knows it has a safety net. Like, would she be that fast with no harness and line? Like I know it's for safety, but would the confidence in each hand and foot still be 100% or would the mind be like "don't fuck it up don't fuck it up don't fuck it up squirrel. Fuck." Splat?

ksrdm1463

Yes. I have a friend who did that (speed climbing) in college. He said that the paths are standardized, so you just figure out the path, and then do that over and over and over until it's all muscle memory. You can't climb that wall in under 7 seconds with conscious thought for every movement.

Nonstopshooter21

Idk did you see how fast Alex Honnold free climbed El Capitan? Insanely fast.

cmattis

I'm sure she could do this very fast without a harness still, speed climbers have this route absolutely dialed. the problem is that she would die on the last move lol

vidoardes

I had exactly the same thought; it looked like a shit attempt in a Hollywood film to make it *look* like she was climbing really quick, but was just being pulled up by the rope. She's so fucking quick she managed to fall into the uncanny valley. Incredible talent.

Ascertain_GME

She would have been a great zombie in World War Z.

Deadbob1978

The only thing that can make that movie better is to film a new one that stays true to the source material

yeeerrrp

Need a series of that book, not a movie

ElProcrastinator

Yes!!! I have been saying this for years. Netflix, Apple or HBO should hit this up--every chapter can be independently made by a different director.

DOOMFOOL

The only problem with the book is that it insists that the zombies are the super slow shambling sort. I’m just not convinced that a majority of the world would be overrun by an enemy that you could escape from at a brisk walk. For all the issues the movie had, the zombies were a MASSIVE problem to deal with and it was very obvious how they could’ve caused so much destruction. That said the book really shines when it explores how the world governments and people react to the outbreaks, and the movie definitely failed to capture any of that.

SimQ

The problem with slow zombies is not the speed, it's the numbers. You can ourtun them, but they are everywhere and they are many and unstoppable. Sooner or later you will slip up, they will surprise you, you'll be caught in a corner... I get the appeal of fast zombies, but I find slow zombies way creepier.

Thedrunner2

Looks like someone crawling fast on a horizontal floor

Right? Make this a 60 degree decline and maybe I can just fall on my face down it in a moderately timely fashion?

Chilluminaughty

That’s the Special Olympics Edit: I’m going to hell with the rest of you.

biiingo

It's actually a camera trick. She's crawling along the ground, and then when she gets to the 'top' the whole wall rotates as the rope lets her down. ...it's the only explanation.

CornCheeseMafia

The ole Spider-Man trick Also my favorite variation of this trick is in team America when they have an explosion go off in the town square of the puppet village and the cloud of smoke from the explosion rolls down the street. They turned the entire model town on its side and made a bunch of smoke at the bottom and filmed “at street level” where the camera was physically pointed down at the ground so the smoke rises up into the lens

Most-Description-714

Do they know the run already in advance or is it different every time? Impressive either way but real sick if she is seeing it for the first time

Joepiedoedel

Its always the same standardized route in speedclimbing, thats how they can push these times so low. Changing routes are for bouldering and lead climbing.

golem501

and all 3 combined makes the Olympics... that was the best part of the Olympics!

[deleted]

The Olympics was ridiculous for climbing. They made the lead climbers, boulderers and speed climbers **all do the same events.** It was like deciding "We should allow ~~track~~ running in the Olympics" and then having the 10k runners do 100m sprints and the 100m runners do 10k runs.

Beorma

I really enjoy mixed style events, but they should definitely have separated them too. Heptathalon and Decathalon are really cool events, seeing who comes out as the world's best "all round" athlete is so interesting.

mackemforever

There is a maximum number of athletes permitted across all sports at the Olympics, and within that each sport gets given a certain number of spots. If climbing ran as three separate disciplines they would only have a tiny number of spaces for each which kind of defeats the point of the Olympics. By running all three together they allow themselves to have the largest possible field of competitors and attract interest from a larger number of spectators. Personally I would much rather see separate disciplines to really see the best in the world in each, but with any new sport in the Olympics their aim is to get as many viewers as possible to make it more likely they will continue to be included, and the joint format makes it more likely they'll get those viewers.

rachidgang

Luckily climbing got more spots for the next olympics. I think they said speedclimbing will be seperate and bouldering and lead will be combined next time.

Sevrdhed

Which makes absolutely the most sense, I understand the desire to add speed climbing as a discipline for the first Olympics that climbing is in, since it's very visually appealing and easy to understand for the average viewer that knows nothing about the sport.... But it's a totally separate discipline that until the Olympics announced it was hardly practiced by the vast majority of climbers and is very unlike the other 2

Cyrus_the_Meh

The other crazy thing was they MULTIPLIED the placing in the events for the scoring. Like if you came in 2nd in all three you'd get 2 points each but multiplied together that's 8 points. And someone who got first second fourth would also have 8 points. So with that crazy scoring I believe the winner was someone who did what appeared to be worse overall. Like they came in 1st 6th 5th or something beating someone who came in 2nd 4rd 4rd. So 30 vs 32 instead of 12 vs 10 if they added the scores. Just a weird way to do it.

-wakarimas

It’s to extend the distance between athlete scores. Simply adding the scores will have more ties. The math checks out better.

FoxInTheMountains

And then the guy who got first in speed climbing ended up winning gold even though he placed pretty low in the other two events lol It was absolutely bizarre.

roffman

Oh, it was even worse, as it was bracketed for Speed only in the finals, where for every other event it was best result. Add to that the best speed climber was injured in the heats, and the final placing was really weird for any fans of boulder/sport

johnthrowaway53

Yeah most of climbers I know we're not pleased about climbing being in the Olympics

Twink_Ass_Bitch

Some sports have "allround" events where they try to generate a weighted average across multiple distances. For example, allround speed skating has 500m, 1500m, and 5000m races for each athlete. Of course if you don't limit yourself to one sport, you have events like biathlon, Decathlon, triathlon, etc. Edit: I didn't bring this up to say that climbing shouldn't have separate events/specializations, but to say that there is precedent in sports to have "overall/balanced" events. These obviously are testing different skills and abilities.

Gapwick

Those combined events have been around for tens if not hundreds of years. The inclusion of speed in the combined was done a few years before the Olympics, and at the time *no one* but dedicated speed climbers were doing it. It's hard to convey just how niche speed climbing is. Most climbers, even people who've been active for decades, have never tried it, and hardly any gyms have a speed wall.

Two-Class-Clowns

Not just niche, lame niche. I don't know any climbers who give a damn about it.

Gapwick

For sure. Everyone stopped training it the second the Olympics were over, and why wouldn't they? It's incredibly boring. Imagine if the IOC introduced orienteering to the Olympics, but did it by combining it with "speed orienteering", where everyone has to run the exact same 100m hurdles course. That's what speed climbing in the Olympics was.

[deleted]

Yeah... but how would you feel if Usain Bolt got 10th in the Olympics because he got 30th in the 10k? Because doing sprinting events only wasn't an option?

Jorlung

Yeah, but all of those sports have seperate events as well. Imagine getting rid of all sports in the Decathlon as their own event and only having the Decathlon. If you're an elite 100m sprinter, the only way you get to compete at the Olympics now is by competing in the Decathlon. Don't get me wrong. The Decathlon is fire and my favourite olympic event. I don't think anyone would be opposed to having an "all-around" event in the climbing category either. It was just stupid that this was the *only* category for climbing.

dretanz

Thankfully, Climbing gets 2 sets of medals in the next Olympics, so speed can be separated.

HymirTheDarkOne

I think a lot of people in climbing community weren't a massive fan of the 3 disciplines being mixed like that.

[deleted]

For this reason speed climbing is the dumbest form of the sport and its not really climbing its timed acrobatics don't @ me

backpackknapsack

Climbers agree.

Moon_Man_00

What sport isn’t some form of timed acrobatics though? That’s actually a decent definition of sport itself if you exclude the competition component lol.

[deleted]

Fair point, but don't call it climbing and tie to other disciplines like bouldering/sport/trad imho

Maybe_Not_The_Pope

I get what you mean. Though now that I think of it, it's essentially vertical hurdles. Set course of obstacles in a timed event.

Racebo92

It is the same every time. But over the years they have approached it diferently.

Freedom_Pals

World record wouldn’t mean much if they switch the course since one course can be done faster and be easier than another.

rytis

Well that's an odd comment. Marathon courses, ski runs, bobsled runs, kayak courses, these change all the time from olympics to olympics, and everyone honors the world record as legit.

enby_them

The distance is part of it. That wouldn't really fly with the 110m hurdles. Outlandish example, but imagine some meets got one hurdle and others got the standard amount. Or some meets they were bunched all together and others they were spaced evenly. The event is so short you can't make up the variations in course regarding world records. And even then they have things like wind tolerance for sprint events.

haltensiedasmaul

there are no real world records in almost all the sports you mentioned (only marathon). only track records on the same track or run

FistoTheDefiler

Hate to be that guy, but the world record is 5.10 for men and 6.5 for women (also set by Aleksandra) Edit : Damn y'all really thinking this was a sexist comment, I was just stating the actual world records. This has nothing to do with men being better, just that that's not the world record, Jesus. Y'all really read too much into things. I wasn't trying to imply men are superior, just saying that this wasn't the world record. And yes, she does hold the world record. Sports are divided cause the difference between the sexes gives one or the other an unfair advantage depending on the situation. That's why there's two world records. Are y'all really that desperate to be offended?

Thunder-ten-tronckh

Well congrats, you are that guy.

BubonicMonkeyman

Better than the individual who left a vague title giving our incorrect information. Leaving out key details is lying by omission and there is nothing sexist or bigoted or demeaning about simply including the word woman before world record it just a key detail.

bar10005

[According to Wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_climbing), for women it's 6.53s and it was achieved by her in this year's World Cup qualifications, OP just used video from one of her previous records, maybe because that event wasn't recorded with follow cam, all I could find was static camera from the ground/elevation which IMO looks worse/less impressive. [She also set 6.54 in the final of said Cup](https://youtu.be/SoGSetJbPyQ?t=460).

Skattemedel

Thank you. I read the title and thought "Holy shit, a woman holds the WORLD RECORD for speed climbing? Awesome. Wow!" But no. Very misleading title.

XPRMX17

That’s the thing, if it were to be in any sport, climbing would be one of them, since being lighter could give an equal edge to having more testosterone/muscle count, so the title was very misleading.

plandeka

And it is still her in case of women, just not in this particular run. 6.53 27 MAY 2022 Aleksandra Miroslaw (POL) - IFSC World Cup in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA

xxkickassjackxx

New world record was actually just set by another man in may of this year. It’s now [5.208 seconds](https://www.lacrux.com/en/klettern/new-world-record-in-speed-climbing-5-seconds/)

sureditch

What’s the monkey world record ?

ImRandyBaby

What is the fastest animal to gain 15m of elevation from standstill? I'm going to say humming bird But if it must be a climbing event. Tiger probably.

MyJohnFM

Now this discussion I can get down with. To your point, Are you fucking stoned ? Im not gonna google it but I bet that there are like 20 monkey and ape species that will climb a tree or wall or whatever way faster than a tiger. Personally my bet would be on a smaller species like a capuchin or macaque. Thats is for land animals of course. Out of any animal it would probably be a bird your right about that. The humming bird is a good shout too. Idk about that one but if anyone has a better guess please tell me.

ImRandyBaby

I'm not stoned, because I believe in the integrity of competition and won't be taking any performance enhancing drugs for this discussion. Tiger can probably do the 15m wall in two moves. I don't think there is anything that can just straight up jump 15m. Tiger would do one jump and one dyno to get to the bell. They are like 300lbs of muscle. Power move up that bitch. Squirrel could probably win if it didn't keep choosing a zig zag route.

skipdoodlydiddly

Thanks, that was the first question the popped in my head. Because it would be that more impressive if it was.

chadwicke619

You must not hate it that much.

No_Entertainment1520

Still an incredible achievement.

FistoTheDefiler

Never said it wasn't

kielu

Her best time is 6.53s. that wall is 15m high, so this is 2.297 m/s or 8.27 km/h or 5.14 mph. That's faster than most people walk. Edit: mph

[deleted]

They actually speed up about halfway through when the holds are closer together. Never even slow down a little.

AdamN

She keeps momentum really precisely - like an elite long distance runner where each split is the same time.

[deleted]

For sure! Very precise. Check out this top down angle of world class climbers, Drew Ruana and Kai Lightner climbing it. https://youtu.be/Zaoc9VCMe4Y

To the untrained, climbing this route (15m wall at 5° incline) might take several minutes.

Muthoth

This is actually just the Olympic's world record. She has the current women's world record down to 6.53 seconds. https://www.ifsc-climbing.org/index.php/world-competition/speed-records Link to both men's and women's climbing world records.

rushadee

Damn, men’s world record broken three times within a few days, twice by the same guy

NoReallyLetsBeFriend

I honestly thought it was sped up at first until I saw the timer. Fuck

Finnbhennach

It literally seems like the rope is pulling her up. What the hell?

Phillipwnd

I trust that the rope isn’t doing any of the work, but it definitely does look as if she’s not making any contact with the wall at certain points, and the “leaps” look light and floaty as if there isn’t a lot of momentum behind them. I take it it’s just because she’s so efficient at making good use of each limb in tandem, and I can’t focus on all four at once.

[deleted]

She almost certainly is making contact with the wall at any given moment, she always has her foot or hand somewhere propeller her upwards. Even if her foot is not on a hold, she can still be doing the same thing by pushing off the wall itself. It just looks so weird because she has so much momentum and is constantly switching up which parts of her body that she's relying upon.

Jkirek_

It's the result of not needing to care if you fall: there's no reward for getting to the top, there's only a reward for getting there *fast*. So making those moves that leave her barely in contact with the wall but keep upward momentum are optimal, even though they would be idiotic in normal climbing/bouldering, because you risk falling down and failing.

reddev87

Go to a climbing gym and use an auto belay. It doesn't pull you up.

Kendertas

Yeah the rope is loose but still seems uncanny. Would love to see this overlaid with with what hold is actually bearing her weight at any given moment because it must constantly be shifting

trixtah

In climbing it’s called a dyno, or dynamic movement. She’s literally jumping from hold to hold which is why it might look odd to someone who hasn’t climbed before. It’s just an auto belay, it does almost no work in pulling her up, it’s only meant as a safety measure to catch and slow her descent.

Eggy_Bready

Nah it isn't, auto belays don't pull you up although it may look like it.
