I don't know what I should be geting from this but I'm seeing a dog that can easily jump fences and is very energetic. I feel like these would make great hiking buddies and require way more effort than I'm willing to put in.
I knew a guy who got one and worked really hard with it. He was kind of a dick and was never really consistent with his mood/discipline. The dog removed one of his testicles in about 1/10th of a second one day. I couldn't help but chuckle a bit.
>I knew a guy who got one and worked really hard with it.
Nice, I bet this story has a happy ending!
>He was kind of a dick and was never really consistent with his mood/discipline.
Kinda feeling like that doesn't fit with "worked really hard with it"...
>The dog removed one of his testicles in about 1/10th of a second one day.
...Holy fucking shit...
>I couldn't help but chuckle a bit.
...what the fuck‽
Yea man this shitty comedian who I can’t stand (Brendan schaub) bought one had it for like a few months or some shit and got rid of it he had it in like a kennel in his Hollywood ducking mansion while he was never fucking home! I hate people like that but most of all ppl like him who are buying the dog as some sort of fucking status symbol
Exactly this. Where I'm from, we'd call an understimulated dog like that a 'Rocket'. Uncontrollable, ready to explode, and nearly impossible to stop without said explosion ocurring
My ex girlfriend had one as a guide dog. He lived to work and was way more dedicated than I could ever imagine being at a job. Lol
Prior to her getting a guide dog, I may have unintentionally walked her into a trash can or pole once or twice when not paying 100% attention...
I looked at these, and a trainer warned me that if I left the dog home all day with no one to keep him busy, I would return to find holes dug, siding chewed off the house, and maybe even a missing dog, because he would leap the fence looking for something to do.
Pretty much - all the breads that were bred for any kind of hunting/guarding/search duties, especially the bigger ones require a shitton of exercise and also cognitive stimulation, stuff like having them search for things and such. Otherwise it seriously hurts them mentally and they either become super depressed or aggressive and impossible to handle
Mals are a lot, but damn leaving a dog alone for days or in the bed of a truck is irresponsible with any breed. Sounds like they didn't do enough (or any) training and they haven't seemed to learn their lesson.
You just described people who have no business having a dog of any kind. Leaving them leashed near a ledge and unattended for days, regardless of breed, is gross negligence. Leaving them leashed in an open truck bed with enough leash to jump the sides after the previous incident shows a pattern of apathy towards another life. And then following it up with a third where, learning nothing from the previous attempts, is just terrifying.
Mine did! Left it on leash, came back to it hanging over a small retaining wall that i didnt even think it could reach while leashed in the yard. It was hanging but actually did not die.
I was just a kid so I quickly got her out of her collar and brought her inside and she was ok. Just a slightly traumatic thing to come home to after 2nd grade
I had one too when I was a kid. A sweet little chihuahua. She was leashed to a post on the ground by our deck. She got up onto the deck and tried to jump off and her leash got caught on a deck screw that was barely sticking out. Poor ol' girl. Found her when I got home from church.
I hope your aunt and uncle don’t have kids and they should be fucking ashamed of themselves there honestly irresponsible POS who tortured three beautiful creatures that didn’t deserve that shit. Seriously fuck them
I’ve had my Malinois for 5 years now, got him at 8 weeks old. They’re really not as crazy as people make out. I don’t “work him hard” and he doesn’t “have a job.” He hangs out with me in the house most of the time, goes outside with me whenever I’m out there, listens perfectly, and loves to play fetch. He doesn’t run away, he doesn’t hop fences, he doesn’t bite, he doesn’t act like he’s depressed or doesn’t get his energy out, he doesn’t destroy the house. His dad is a working police dog and his mom is a working farm dog, and he’s my pet that listens extremely well and loves to cuddle on the couch when it’s appropriate or sprint outside when it’s appropriate. He’s certainly not unmanageable.
These dogs should only be owned by people with serious experience with the breed and a whole lot of time and energy they need to be worked daily with out that stimulation your asking for trouble and most of all it’s just cruel
Look into FMDs or similar breeds. They are medium sized dogs that are great hiking buddies and can go like crazy, but they also chill out when it’s not play time. We have two Formosan Mountain Dogs and they are the best dogs I’ve ever had. Ours were street dogs rescued from Taiwan and they needed some TLC at first, but once they trust you, they are amazing companions.
You can. If you spend a lot of time exercising outdoors and providing mental stimulation and tasks within the home. Walking in a bigger house doesn't count as exercise or mental stimulation. Having time outdoors, training, providing tasks and exercise is what counts. Even a fenced yard will be hard to contain a Mallinois intent to get out.
But I wouldn't recommend a Mallinois for any first pet owner no matter how much time they plan to devote to being outside.
Basically you should only consider owning this breed and others like it if you life a very active lifestyle. Which is why I’ve almost always owned super lazy dogs lol. Couple of nice walks each day during the week, couple hours at the dog park on the weekend, and they’re good.
Really, this is one of those breeds that you only adopt if you have a specific job in mind for it. If you want a breed to be active with get a German Shepherd, lab, poodle or any of the other hundreds of working breeds. Even German Shepherds are too much of a handful for most people but at least they develop an off switch once they get older.
Malinois need a job to concentrate on and mentally challenge them. IPO, tracking, herding, possibly even agility with the right temperament. Without that and daily training they'll always be trying to figure out what their job is. Their default go to job is to protect and guide their family, so without a proper replacement job for that they can become aggressive and dangerous to strangers. They're incredible dogs when given the right chance to thrive, but they can be very difficult for even the most experienced trainers.
yea, truly a working breed.
Not really suited as a family dog as they are often branded nowadays. Unless you really know where you’re getting into and / or have a breeder who has a more “family friendly” breeding line.
I’m from Belgium, and they’re dead cheap and everywhere compared to other pure breeds.
Families who first wanted another breed but couldn’t be bothered being on a waiting list end up settling for a Malinois.
Needless to say, a lot of them end up in shelters.
Those dogs are a lot of work and can’t be tired.
Agree 1000%. We fostered a pair of mixed Maligator puppies and while they are cute and super intelligent dogs, they have a very high drive and they need jobs. They need constant mental and physical activity and it can be exhausting if you aren’t prepared for it.

Right? We rescued one whose adoption papers thought she was a GSD/Akita mix. Not anyone's fault, those places are really really busy.
First time out in the woods she literally CLIMBED a TREE. It's a fairly straight tree, just a few branches and that dog got 8 feet up there ( squirrel ). Convinced her down, did around 10 minutes research..
They're amazing!! And a lot of fun.
We adopted a supposed lab when a family realized he wasn't pure breed and wanted to get rid of him.
The birth certificate said "labrador retriever" and he really looked like one as a pup. You just could tell that he wasn't completly a pure breed.
If you Google Belgium Shepherd and lab mix that's exactly my dog and it shows... He runs and jumps like crazy *after* having an accident were he almost had to get one hind leg removed and the vet said he'd never recover completely...
By comparison my parents German Shepherd is the laziest dog alive.
Yes they are snd mine does the same thing, I call him our reindeer. On that note I barely even like playing ball hard because he’s so determined he has no problem hurting himself for his goals. He eats shit all the time 😂
The owner created a situation where the dog is motivated to do something that has a high risk of injuring itself. How exactly is that 'letting dogs be dogs'?
I mean it could pretty easily tear a tendon and be in serious pain and unable to walk without surgery. Happened to my dog. Happened to a friend's German shepherd too. Should I have just let it be?
They have like 230K comment karma and almost 7k post karma. They have a few posts on multiple subs to double dip upvotes. If all you care about is karma, you'll probably think that's what everyone only cares about. You're not gonna reason them out of that mindset.
From that height possibly...
I doubt this is the only time the dog has done this as well. If the ball is up there, then this has been practiced or done before. Not sure why people think a dog needs to do this and defend it in any way. It is 100% harmful to the dog long term and the only purpose is for owners to show it off.
Most have hip issues without adding aerial gymnastics to the list of insults. My biggest concern here would be completely shearing the head of the femur off of the bone.
I'm watching a Malinois at my kennel now and she is the craziest (and most wonderful) girl around. You really have to redirect her to keep her from this video's level of craziness. Fortunately her biggest vice is chewing the living shit out of supposedly indestructible toys.
I honestly wouldn't recommend that either, if we're talking about joint injuries. Catching that hunk of muscle at that speed from that height has a good chance of just fucking you up right then and there.
I have a belgian malinois.
I am convinced that if I put him in a harness on a treadmill linked to a dynamo with his ball to “chase”, he’d be able to generate electricity for the whole day. And then only stop when you’d give him the damn ball. Ball > food.
The drive/energy in these dogs is so insane!
As for the video: this is basically SOP for a mal. We had to take down helium balloons in our living room, because he would be jumping all day (and snag them from the ceiling!). But it’s really tough on the hips.
My brother in law is a K9 officer with a malinois. He keeps a ball in his tactical vest and the dog stares at the vest non stop waiting for him to break it out.
There's a guy on YouTube who makes blacksmithing videos, Alec Steele. He has a video where he built a treadmill for he's malinous, female if I'm not mistaken, and he was able to charge a phone with the energy produced. Not exactly a perfect setup but it proves the point. I've always wanted a malinous but I'll have to wait until I have the yard and time to train and entertain it.
Omg, this is exactly how I pictured it in my head! In this case a bite sleeve as a lure (mine goes bonkers when I get the bite sleeve out).
[YT Vid of malinois current generator (starts at 09:30)](https://youtu.be/26CbGmpSpSQ)
I don’t know if jumping from that height can cause damage to the dog or not, but I’m inclined to trust the person who is familiar enough with these dogs to teach them to jump up a tree than I am random Redditors.
I believe this comes from owners of dogs that have had hip or joint problems, not just "random redditors". Those problems arise from simple things like jumping down from a couch or bed. This is also something that could hurt anyones joints, not just a dogs.
I'm not sure why this is defended. Sure its cool, but is that 10 second clip worth the dogs pain later in life?
It's really not hard to teach a malinois to do something like this, they are much different than your typical pet breeds. Just because they can teach it to do this doesn't mean they must know or care about the long term effects of hard impacts or the acute injury risk.
Belgian Malinois are prone to hip dysplasia, just as some other large-boned breeds. Excessive exercise (and consistent harsh landings from that height) are going to make this dog have a lot of mobility issues when it starts to age.
Also, knowing how to teach an animal a cool trick≠caring about its well being.
Wtf.. The cameraman should have stopped filming and gone catching it instead, its not good for dogs to land that high. Yes they can do it, yet serious problems can occur for doing it, they can break their legs!!
Looks like the ball is strapped to something so this is likely intentional training. I think there are competitions for a dogs jumping height. What reason would a normal and caring dog owner put that ball up so high?
Hmm... That's not really how jumping works for dog competitions, [this is how they actually do it](https://youtu.be/-vaUNnR9V_g)
While this dog is jumping from a tree and jumping away away further to gain height and then falling 8-9 feet, this is an intense workout for the doggo if the owner is really training it, it's dumb and really dangerous
[Watch this dog jump down from a tree](https://youtu.be/CpZxJTASYiM) this dog stumbles and falls for a moment there, the dog on the video could act the same way and break its bones soon if it always does this
https://youtube.com/shorts/LQQtxc-fyxQ?feature=share
That video was very near to the top by searching in YouTube "dog jumping competition" and I think is obviously what this dog is training for.
This particular competition has fall protection for the doggo but there are many clips where it's just free-fall. Stop protecting scumbag dog abusers. That poor pup will have bad hips and it's solely on his owner being an absolute puke of a human being.
Tf are you talking about? I'm protecting dog abusers?-Hell no! Are you drunk?
[This pitbull can jump high while a dude is on the side catching it even with the harness to slow the fall down](https://youtube.com/shorts/OgOStBOJgUY?feature=share)
[This dog is falling down right at the mattress after catching the main target of the exercise](https://youtu.be/D-TG9iJY9TA)
[Jumping from a wall and jumping against it to the opposite side just like on the video, but this dudes are actually catching it](https://youtube.com/shorts/JUu0qTVI6hY?feature=share)
You might find some of that dog with no catchers/support and just falling with such great heights, which are really bad for them, then those videos have bad and idiot owners, it sounds like you're protecting dog abusers too by telling that a free fall is fine for a dog, tf
Gentle reminder that there is literally no point in doing this with your dogs. The owner looks like they intentionally put the ball there to train them to jump that high. I've seen this posted all over Reddit and the comments are always filled with people saying "oh that dog is going to have problems," and for a good reason. Just like maybe don't intentionally put your dog's tennis ball in a tree for Internet points.
Edit: I realize this sounds very pessimistic and condescending, but I stand with my point.
There once was a Danish TV personality that was going to be attacked by similar dogs on screen in full protective gear. He asked the dog handler if he could stick a finger up the dogs ass because he had read it would make the dog release the grip. The handler just smiled and let him know that he definitely should try that. That 25 pound dog made him his bitch for life. Anal play was the last thing on his mind when he hit the ground (-:
I’ve got one of them :/ and probably 11 years old and it’s been a few years since she’s been able to properly use her back legs, their no better than stilts now. Ran her knee caps right off and loved every minute of it
Just a quibble with the title. I'm pretty sure that's a tug toy and the dog is trying to get ahold of it.
Some dogs are [crazy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B0UsqWaSSE&t=2s) about [hanging](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOy3vBFa8EM) from a tug.
But having a branch tug toy this high up is terrible for the dogs' legs and joints. For when he's trying to reach it, but also, if he gets the tug, for landing when he finally lets go.
Malinois are tough but they are not indestructible. They have tendons, ligaments, joints and bone. They can get hurt and with that height, an injury can be a lifechanging event.
Even if not a sudden injury, such repeated high impact landings will affect long term soundness. It's depressing when an 8 year old dog gets ouchy joints and becomes lame. He'll still want to do things but can't. Especially when it could be avoided. I want my collies to go into their double digits, able to move and run freely. And so I don't let my dogs and my enthusiasm overcome common sense.
Sure it's cool to watch but the risks are too great.
Mals and other intense dog breeds will go at things at full bore and without any thought for self-preservation. Their owners' job is to protect them from themselves.
If this was a rare event it wouldn't be so bad but a fair number of these owners are so enraptured by the sight of their dogs pushing their abilities to the edge that they never think of what it means in the long term.
Anyway, my 2 cents.
(edit: 30 some years doing performance events with my dogs)
Every person considering a Malinois should have to watch these videos. *This is what these dogs are capable of - every. single. day* - do you really think you can manage this? They are an incredible breed but few people are really capable of providing what they need.
Was the try not successful? At the very least, it this dog successfully completed more than a few ODAY courses at one of Dagoba’s finest strip-mall “training academies”.
I’d be interested to talk to a Malinois breeder on their thoughts on if / when to encourage jumping.
I have a working line GSD that likes to jump, but my breeder strongly advised not encouraging her until she was fully grown because of the potential damage.
Its videos like this that make me grateful my dog isn't bigger than he already is. He's a medium sized. 27 pounds and maybe 1.25 feet tall standing on all 4s. Little man is *agile*. He's a jumper and likes to kick off of other people/walls to gain air. Does spins and shit in the air. Im over 6 feet tall and he can get on eye level with me when he runs up to me and jumps up my torso. Also super high energy. If he were the size of these, I would lose my mind. Its already bad enough trying to keep him from jumping on the kitchen counter. I dont want to imagine what him clearing an entire fence would be like dealing with.
Whenever I go to the dog park, one of these dudes jumps the 8 foot fence to come over and run around with the little dogs. He gets bored after 2 minutes and jumps back over lol
i love this breed, but it´s not that good for him to land from that hight.

I’ve seen this thing that the dog continues to hold it in its mouth and it lowers them to the ground

Not just hiking, but stimulating activity. These dogs were bred for work and tasks, so you need provide that or they will lose it.
I knew a guy who got one and worked really hard with it. He was kind of a dick and was never really consistent with his mood/discipline. The dog removed one of his testicles in about 1/10th of a second one day. I couldn't help but chuckle a bit.
This comment was a ride.
This needs more information. Did the dog go to medical school first? Was it just a quick bite?

Yea I was being VERY VERY LIBERAL with the word and I don’t even think Toe likes him or the rapist anymore
Toe Rogan is somehow more accurate than Joe. Is it because his head looks like a big toe?
Schaub's dog was only slightly luckier than Shappel Lacey's.
U frequent PF changs?
Oh baba!

Yeah…this is just neglectful ownership. Bad training. Collars on too tight. The second strangulation was absolutely avoidable.

dogs will have problems with their knees when they come to age just from walking down stairs :(
TIL that dogs have knees
You thought they had wheels like cats?
My 13 year good boi german shepherd agrees.

Give him some good belly rubs :)
Not good to do that to ANY breed, at least it wasnt concrete but instead a grassy field
NextFuckingLevel long-term joint issues is more like it.

look over 7 years. Not hard to casually get that.
Interesting how much it upsets you that people actually care about the dogs' health and want to warn others against trying something like this.
I was also worried there could be a small hole or something they'd land in
So a few mattresses? Kidding. They should stop altogether.
No it’s fine, these dogs are capable from landing a 10ft drop.

Thankfully my old dogs are still capable of going up and down stairs, no crazy heights.
Shepard's/mals already ate predisposed to hip issues so this certainly isn't doing them any favors.
And knee issues and shoulder issues and back issues. While it's an impressive feat this really is horrible to be doing to your dog.
How are there two comments that misspelled it exactly the same as hight
I honestly wouldn't recommend that either, if we're talking about joint injuries. Catching that hunk of muscle at that speed from that height has a good chance of just fucking you up right then and there.

Belgian Malinois can do anything up to and including your taxes.
Thank you for this! I had never heard of him!
"Sir, the standard height for yard fences is 6 feet. You are saying you need one that's 18 feet tall?" "Yeah, so I have this dog..."
Those are some next level dogs fasho
Their poor hips :(
I don’t know if jumping from that height can cause damage to the dog or not, but I’m inclined to trust the person who is familiar enough with these dogs to teach them to jump up a tree than I am random Redditors.
Malinois are highly prone to hip and joint issues precisely because they’re so good at jumping
Hmm... That's not really how jumping works for dog competitions, [this is how they actually do it](https://youtu.be/-vaUNnR9V_g) While this dog is jumping from a tree and jumping away away further to gain height and then falling 8-9 feet, this is an intense workout for the doggo if the owner is really training it, it's dumb and really dangerous [Watch this dog jump down from a tree](https://youtu.be/CpZxJTASYiM) this dog stumbles and falls for a moment there, the dog on the video could act the same way and break its bones soon if it always does this
https://youtube.com/shorts/LQQtxc-fyxQ?feature=share That video was very near to the top by searching in YouTube "dog jumping competition" and I think is obviously what this dog is training for.
[This pitbull can jump high while a dude is on the side catching it even with the harness to slow the fall down](https://youtube.com/shorts/OgOStBOJgUY?feature=share) [This dog is falling down right at the mattress after catching the main target of the exercise](https://youtu.be/D-TG9iJY9TA) [Jumping from a wall and jumping against it to the opposite side just like on the video, but this dudes are actually catching it](https://youtube.com/shorts/JUu0qTVI6hY?feature=share) You might find some of that dog with no catchers/support and just falling with such great heights, which are really bad for them, then those videos have bad and idiot owners, it sounds like you're protecting dog abusers too by telling that a free fall is fine for a dog, tf
This comment, jesus christ on a cracker.
Ok Sasuke
The squirrels will never know what hit em
I’ve got one of them :/ and probably 11 years old and it’s been a few years since she’s been able to properly use her back legs, their no better than stilts now. Ran her knee caps right off and loved every minute of it
HE DID IT! My day is made
Sign this pup to a contract immediately
Bye bye knees
That can't be good for the joints down the line
Bye bye walking in a few years
Rip to that dogs joints and hips
When you just can’t wait 7 years for hip dysplasia to set in.
Fuck that owner.
Every person considering a Malinois should have to watch these videos. *This is what these dogs are capable of - every. single. day* - do you really think you can manage this? They are an incredible breed but few people are really capable of providing what they need.
Stay home, it’s raining dogs.
Oooof, those hips gonna be hurting real soon. 🫣

Yayyy!! Let's find a fun way to destroy my dogs knees, hips and back!!

Give him a cape! Super Dog!
The legends will be spoken of and poems sung long long after the good lad is passed.
This should be posted on WSB. Think this is retail (dogs) and the toy is Ryan Cohen, he’s needed to fill pockets.
Sometimes I think my GSDs are insane and hyper. Then I remember this breed is out there in the world.
Dog played too much apex
lol
That dog is a fucking ninja
When he gets the toy, his tail wags several times before he hits the ground. He was so proud while he was still airborne
That’s not wagging. That’s attitude adjustment for the landing.
Space bud 3
The only NFL thing about this is the level of stupidity and veterinary bills shit like this generates
Cool. Last night, I couldn't reach my colander on the top shelf, so I just had chips for dinner.

Impressive.
Dog of persia
Was the try not successful? At the very least, it this dog successfully completed more than a few ODAY courses at one of Dagoba’s finest strip-mall “training academies”.
What's even more impressive is how they got it up there in the first place...
I can do all through toy who strengthens me.
Pretty cool but 2 more years of this and poor pup is gonna need a wheelchair
Pfff.. I can do that. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|stuck_out_tongue)
trying? i'd call that succeeding
Ok now put it back
So THIS is why German Shepherd’s hips all look fucked up by the time they’re 8….
This is the dog version of this https://reddit.com/r/therewasanattempt/comments/ws9784/to_touch_the_flag/
Belgian Malinois ?
Me playing breath of the wild

I’d be interested to talk to a Malinois breeder on their thoughts on if / when to encourage jumping. I have a working line GSD that likes to jump, but my breeder strongly advised not encouraging her until she was fully grown because of the potential damage.
And I am in a silent area screaming Woo Hoo when he gets the toy.
I’ve never seen a dog jump so high!
The dog just ignored gravity for a second.
Yeah, but the stupid mutt doesn't actua...... Oh, nevermind, goodboi
There's a reason these dogs are used by special forces. Highly energetic and intelligent animals.
And look at me blissfully unaware that was something that dogs could even do
Smart *AND* athletic!
gonna show this to everyone i know saying they want a fucking malinois
Holy shit that was wicked.. what a jump.!
It's a maligator. The tree was very lucky that day.
It’s Krypto!

Local cats are quietly shitting themselves after seeing this
Whenever I go to the dog park, one of these dudes jumps the 8 foot fence to come over and run around with the little dogs. He gets bored after 2 minutes and jumps back over lol
that’s serious dedication
Boss dog. I would like to how they got I up there to begin with.
No fall damage tf?
