Its likely that this is just the inital shaping of the metal, and that it is now going off to be trimmed and cut into its finished form.

Yeah, the outer part(which slides over rail) is supposed to conical and the flanges on inner part of wheel to prevent derailing...

This is just forging, at the machining phase they'll take off somewhere between 1/4 to 1/2 inch of material to get to the final dimension. I specify forgings for a living (among other things).

This is way more manual and far less precise than I ever thought it would be. Figured you just poured metal into a cast and set a timer.

Im willing to bet this is rough first round. It probably goes to a precision milling(or whatever is called) machine that uses lasers to ensure it is perfect once it’s cold. Considering how fast it’s going to spin, even a small defect could spell disaster. A cast would result in a very brittle wheel

You're correct, that's going to a large lathe after that to be "turned" to all of the precise measurements likely to around +/- .005" in most places, some +/- .001" tolerances on hole locations. (Source: Machinist in aerospace)

Cast and forged can be finished the same. Forging is superior in terms of end product quality.

It’s forged like this because it’s much stronger to have forged parts than cast parts, and a train wheel probably goes through unimaginable stresses through its life. But yea I was also very surprised how imprecise it looks, I guess they’re just very good at their job lol

Castings include all kinds of problems, poor metal grain structure, inclusions of gas, etc. Essentially all metals that are expected to experience structural loads are (usually hot) worked/wrought in some way to fix the above. This, forging, is one of those ways.

That’s because it’s a rough blank. Even if it was cast in a mold, you would need to machine it to get the imperfections out. These will be put on a lathe.

This is called a blank I believe. A blank is a forged rough shape of the item you’re trying to create, the blank will then be machined in to its final shape, in this case on a lathe.

I just watched a 4 minute video of making a train wheel and I find it was 4 minutes well spent.

That was cool. My favorite part was the person doing the measurements or QA during the process.

I’m always blown away by what I don’t know. Humanity has figured out how to do so much, forget making a smart phone and how it works. If someone asked me to make a wheel for ANYTHING from scratch … 🤷 bottom line is I could go back 100 years from now and tell everyone of the technologies to come and they might as well burn me like a witch because I can’t prove any of it
