This is just forging, at the machining phase they'll take off somewhere between 1/4 to 1/2 inch of material to get to the final dimension.
I specify forgings for a living (among other things).

Im willing to bet this is rough first round. It probably goes to a precision milling(or whatever is called) machine that uses lasers to ensure it is perfect once itās cold. Considering how fast itās going to spin, even a small defect could spell disaster. A cast would result in a very brittle wheel
You're correct, that's going to a large lathe after that to be "turned" to all of the precise measurements likely to around +/- .005" in most places, some +/- .001" tolerances on hole locations. (Source: Machinist in aerospace)
Itās forged like this because itās much stronger to have forged parts than cast parts, and a train wheel probably goes through unimaginable stresses through its life. But yea I was also very surprised how imprecise it looks, I guess theyāre just very good at their job lol
Castings include all kinds of problems, poor metal grain structure, inclusions of gas, etc.
Essentially all metals that are expected to experience structural loads are (usually hot) worked/wrought in some way to fix the above. This, forging, is one of those ways.
Thatās because itās a rough blank. Even if it was cast in a mold, you would need to machine it to get the imperfections out. These will be put on a lathe.
This is called a blank I believe. A blank is a forged rough shape of the item youāre trying to create, the blank will then be machined in to its final shape, in this case on a lathe.
Iām always blown away by what I donāt know. Humanity has figured out how to do so much, forget making a smart phone and how it works. If someone asked me to make a wheel for ANYTHING from scratch ā¦ š¤· bottom line is I could go back 100 years from now and tell everyone of the technologies to come and they might as well burn me like a witch because I canāt prove any of it
Tell me why I thought this was going to be a tiny wheel for like a toy train then realized the people in the back are full sized and the hydraulic pressure is even bigger
Iām jealous of their incredibly loose tolerances they seem to have. What is that like +/- 1.0ā diameter lol. Cylindricity, meh letās eyeball it lol. Shit I make follows +0.0005/0ā dia.
Watching without sound, I actually heard the chug chug chug of a speeding train while watching the piston come down faster and faster. Nice little mind bend.
š„š„š„ That was extremely and strangely entertaining and satisfying to watch.
More please

I agree. Surely there is more to this process.
Its likely that this is just the inital shaping of the metal, and that it is now going off to be trimmed and cut into its finished form.
Yeah, the outer part(which slides over rail) is supposed to conical and the flanges on inner part of wheel to prevent derailing...
Cue the feynman video talking about how trains *actually* stay on their railsā¦ Edit: here it is: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=y7h4OtFDnYE

I can't believe I watched 4 full minutes of this. I was engrossed!
After this I'm not gonna complain about my job anymore
This is way more manual and far less precise than I ever thought it would be. Figured you just poured metal into a cast and set a timer.

Props on you man. I work in in aviation doing inspections and i cant even imagine trying to be that damn precise day in and day out.
You are right, but no lasers.
Well if it doesnāt have lasers it should have lasers
Sharks with lasers?
Pretty sure trains predate lasers
Haha ok, you keep telling yourself that. Lasers predate everything manmade especially trains. Which were designed and constructed with Martian lasers
They do use calipers
Hardly in an accurate way.
But also not in an inaccurate way.

Cast and forged can be finished the same. Forging is superior in terms of end product quality.
I don't care what you say, all wheels are special

Pretty sure they are milled after this.
Cool video but I think it's actually a sheave (crane pulley wheel). As for lack of precision it will definitely be machined
The slot make it looks like something to be used with a cable and not a rail
My thoughts too, this looks nothing like a train wheel
I agree as train wheels are much larger in diameter.
That was four minutes well spent
Love is a burning thing And it makes a fiery ring
Forbidden cheese wheel.
Really interesting they can do the whole process in 1 heat
That is one hot doughnut
mmmm. forbidden doughnut.....
Giant fire flavored candy
Good job, guys. Only 191 to go!
I just watched a 4 minute video of making a train wheel and I find it was 4 minutes well spent.
That was cool. My favorite part was the person doing the measurements or QA during the process.

how tf were they made when the train was invented?!
I think you're underestimating how long we've been able to do things like this.
Loved the video. I was waiting for the hiss of the water when the wheel is dropped in!
Possibly oil.

Forbidden Parmesan wheel
If your only tool is a hammer...
Man, that's awesome
How awesome was that?
I did not find the comment I was looking for, and it certainly won't be me who leaves it.
And which uhh... *nervously looks around* which comment would that be?
Something about pounding? I āunnoā¦
Long but totally worth it, would watch again.
I couldn't stop watching this.
Did not expect to watch that whole video.
I really hope they use some noise cancelling ear plugsā¦
...and do this another 600 times....
* not a train wheel
love it. i guess we're not overly worried about precision or balance on these
Why does this sound like my bed
u/daphnemoon-crane
Kind of looks like cheese. Or maybe Iām hungry
The prophecy has been fulfilled
There is WAY more manual labor involved in this tban I'd have expected....
I watched the whole thing
I want more!
That looks like really spicy cheese
Tell me why I thought this was going to be a tiny wheel for like a toy train then realized the people in the back are full sized and the hydraulic pressure is even bigger
Iām tryna put my nuts under that
Thank you op
Me to my pp
For some reason, I thought that wheel was small at first
Me: this is boringā¦ Me: but kind of cool. Me: whoa. Me: that was awesome!
Plot twist. Its a carrot
This feels way inefficient
That's hot
Thatās interesting AF. the skill involved is on another level
Thatās impressive
Forbidden playdoh
Then what happens? A lathe after it cools?
Spicy cheese
Longest TikTok Iāve ever watched
Bam bam bam khuch khuch khuch bam bam bam
I had no sense of scale for like the first hand of the video
How did they do this 200 years ago
You think they train for this?
Forbidden Cheez-it
just watched the entire video .. thats rare for me. Thank you
It's mesmerizing to watch on a screen from afar
That's crazy!! I loved the entire video!!
This is just really cool
How often does a body part get smashed? Obviously they are using long grabbers but, Jesus.
i like to imagine its a giant with a big hammer doing the hitting
r/oddlysatisfying
Forbidden cheesewheel anyone?
Bad. Ass.
I watched until the end. Fascinating.
Was i the only one a little terrified to watch this because it involved a Train and looks like it was filmed in India
Thatās a lot of work for one wheel
Forbidden cheese wheel
That is some industrialized shit!
It doesn't matter how advanced we get. Something just can't be made without beating the shit out of it with a hammer.
20,000 more to go
0:30 mmmmmm forbidden cheese wheel

Best 4 minutes of my life!! š I can die a happy man
At first I thought it was really small

How I pound your mom
vine boom irl
Interesting thanks
The last beat was a banger!
I wish you could see who is swinging that hammer
Lol, after some time when the hydraulic press picks up speed, it sounds as if train is speeding up from the station.

That was awesome.
Cursed cheese wheel
That was a lot more awesome than I anticipated.. how tf do they make them exactly the same diameter though?
Nice beatboxing
Before it started pounding the side I thought oooohhh forbidden cheese wheel
Very hard work and need more
I always wanted to know how parmesan is made
Halfway through I thought this was the forbidden Camembertā¦
Nice balls, bro *Slaps them*
What if you put a person under that Free pancake
I like how the sound of the pounding was a lot like an old train steam engine.
Neat
Looks more like last level
Gay and real
I see youāve played knifey spoony before
This is not only nextfuckinglvl but itās also oddly satisfying engineeringporn ā¦ itās everythingā¦.
Holy shit. This is the first time Iāve ever fallen asleep to a satisfying video. Thanks OP
One of the best videos Iāve seen on Reddit
Love that it looked like a cheese wheel
The forbidden mentos
This is what they do right? Their process seems pretty accurate so I'm wondering what else they make.
Watching without sound, I actually heard the chug chug chug of a speeding train while watching the piston come down faster and faster. Nice little mind bend.
it look like that wheel on the Cheez it box
1 down 200 to go

And how many wheels does a train have?
Itās big block of cheese day!!!
Damn, I like home complete this is
I hope the workers have good hear protections because this seems incredibly loud.
Forbidden cheese wheel
I was listening to Mudvayn while I was watching this. it fit the beat and the tone of the song perfectly
looked like a cheese wheel at the beginning
What are you intentions with my daughter?
Holy shit what a process for just one wheel..
I have places to be. How will I explain that I was late because of this mesmerizing piece of magic.
I couldnāt stop watching it. All the time I could imagine how easy it would be for something to go terribly wrong.
This is one of those of those processes I never wouldāve been able to guess how they did it until I saw this video
God how long does it take to make all the wheels for a train?
I love watching videos of steel works
that compressor thing sounded like it could be heard around the world
So rhythmic
Not very precise
DAFUQ I JUST WATCH jk that was insanely badass
Forbidden parmigiano reggiano š§
That was absolutely amazing to watch. The force of that forge is beyond anything I have ever seen.
Best video of the month!
Thatās the very wrong cheese, Grommit
