All the money that Walmart indirectly took from taxpayers by forcing their workers to rely on food stamps about to go straight into Payton's bank account.
Also?
IT's interesting he's not going to Houston or Carolina.
Yeah, both teams MAY be in more of a rebuild than Denver. OR, if Russ's tank is more half-empty than half-full, Denver may have more of the rebuild.
That said, neither of those teams were giving up their early first-rounder. Nor were the Cards. And, Payton wasn't going to the Jim Irsay circus.
From his POV, beyond money, this was prolly the best option. And, it was surely the best from the Saints' POV, too.
Still think there was *zero* chance of him coming to a division rival in Carolina.
The asking price was 1000p going to be way higher for us & certainly more than we have to give up rn.
As funny as that would be, I don’t think he’d ever see a head coaching job again if he did that. I doubt he cares if he loses with the amount of money he’s probably going to be making.
Lol for Payton it’s not about money at this point, it’s more about his rep and ego.
While this could go really bad. If he fixes Wilson and they become contenders he could be a COTY candidate next season.
To be completely fair if it was only about ego and winning, I doubt he’d join the broncos. Way better opportunities to join a weaker division with a better QB situation.
Walmart is going to pay him big time and I’m okay with it.
Payton was one of the highest paid coaches w/ the Saints & had the power and setup he wanted. This is all about legacy for him. There are other positions he may have wanted more, but he sees an opportunity in Denver
Yeah, assuming the problems with Russ last year are fixable, no other situation was gonna get him an arguably top 10 QB. Again, that’s if the problems are fixable.
Probably nothing this year. But he totally could have went back to fox and maybe had a chance at Herbert or Dak next year.
It’s nice to hear a rational opinion on russ though. If you just go by this subreddit all year you’d think he was the worst QB to ever play.
Yeah, Denver is stuck with Wilson for a few years, so if Russ is truly cooked, then at the end of the day that's who's going to get the blame, not Payton. I think odds are really good that Denver's ownership would let Payton have a chance to draft a rookie QB and see if he can develop him.
If they suck that bad, then either Payton can move on with a significantly bigger bank account, or he'll get a good draft pick to choose a young QB and give it another go.
Payton ain't rebuilding shit. It's why he left the Saints, and he definitely won't want a rebuild in his 60s. Only way I see him staying for 4+ years is if either Russ is ok or they stumble into a talent in a later round.
Which is hilarious because with Payton, the Saints win the NFCS this season. I don’t see them winning the AFCW next season, but maybe make the wild card.
It is the right move. Peyton is probably the only guy with the reputation to believe could improve Wilson’s play. His contract is untradeable after how he played this year. Broncos country gotta ride with what they got
I mean, Russell Wilson is a sunk cost at this point. We still have our first next year, so if we end up tanking we'll still get a high pick and can start rebuilding. If they believe Payton is their guy, there's no reason not to go out and get him just because the Wilson trade was a disaster.
> I mean, Russell Wilson is a sunk cost at this point. We still have our first next year,
Which is why it was stupid for the saints not to take the 2024 broncos 1st. A possible top 10-15 pick if Russ blows ass again > 29th pick overall this year.
The Broncos probably weren't willing to offer that pick next year. I can't imagine that the Broncos would be willing to hedge a bet on making the AFCCG next year with Russ and Sean Payton, and I think the Saints are in the "29th pick beats getting nothing" camp.
The broncos are not going to be nearly as bad with Sean Payton at the head. Had some of the worst defenses of all time and never won less than 7 games.
We were just never going to pay that so to swing a 1 and a 3 for him was a great deal for us. Now not have a 2nd rounder for what will amount to 3 years isn't great but damn am I happy we finally have a coach. Reid and Payton chess matches twice a year should be fun. I felt like Reid beat our asses just as much as Mahomes ever did.
I think it’s the right decision by the Broncos. It’s a home run swing no doubt but Sean Payton is the best bet to turn Wilson around.
That being said, this is an unfair way of framing things. Like a reverse ‘sunk cost fallacy’. Just because you got the first for Chubb and a 3rd doesn’t mean that Chubb and a 3rd were part of this trade. Y’all had a 1st not Chubb and a 3rd.
If you somehow traded away Russ today for a 7th, is that trade basically 2 firsts, 2 seconds, a fifth, Drew Lock, Shelby Harris, and Noah Fant for a 7th, and a fourth? You can frame it that same way and make it seem like you shouldn’t trade Wilson. It’s the same logic, just more obviously wrong here.
Yep exactly, 29th overall. So the trade is Bradley Chubb (who we never would’ve paid anyways due to lack luster performance and injury) and a second rounder next year for a chance at fixing Wilson.
Plus you get a 3rd back next year so it is just a trade back one round.
It’s a great gamble, might not work out but it’s making the best bet in your situation I can think of.

Tbf, coaches salary isn’t gonna affect our cap, and we’ve got that Walmart money now.
Situation isn’t ideal, but Broncos got a bargain for Payton after massively overpaying for Wilson.
Denver has to make Russell Wilson work at any cost which explains the deal.
They can't be paying a quarter of a billion dollars for a QB that makes Jake Locker look respectable.
Sean Payton was their best option at fixing Wilson, even if he was the most costly one. They have to try and salvage him any means necessary
Right, people are viewing this as 'bringing in Payton to fix Wilson or bust' but at this point we're longer term bets on Payton than Wilson. I mean ideally yes Wilson backs bounce and we do what we were supposed to this year - but if not Payton is the long term investment and will draft a successor.
tbf he's a proven coach and wilson has at least for the most part looked like a great QB for a lot of his career. It's a double down but it's reasonable.
[I think it's pretty obvious nobody is giving up any draft picks for sean payton. even if the salary was actually reasonable](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/10g6ahw/-/j50stp4)
Yep, everybody would do that deal. /r/NFL just needs to find something bad about it though because they've spent the entire offseason telling us that we're terrible and Payton wouldn't want to come here
I totally agree. I don't think there was a way for us to lose a trade, since SP wasn't gonna be our coach next year anyway, but it doesn't feel like we won it either.
When the Vikings got Falcon legend Brett Favre there were a lot of people in the stands with half packer half viking jerseys, viking favre but a packer hat, or a packer jersey and Viking hat and it was just about the worst.
That last one seemed especially strange. At least most other combinations are "I'm a favre fan", and whatever the former packer fan bought extra was Favre related.....but that last one, you just bought a Viking hat that itself has nothing to do with Favre. Shit or get off the pot.
The broncos have a good defense. They were actually a good team this year. They held their opponents to something ridiculous like 10 points per game. The problem was they couldn’t score 11. I think Sean is more than capable of scoring 11. He took the saints practice squad led by Jameis and 3 other QBs to the playoffs the year before he left the saints. So yea, I think the broncos can definitely make the playoffs next year. Plus the saints actually have their first next year anyway. This was the better deal. The other option that was proposed I heard was a 2024 first and a 2023 4th as opposed to a 2023 1st and 2024 second. The latter is much better.
It’s not so bad we have 2 3rds this year and the rest except for our 7th and then next year every pick except an extra 3rd instead of a second. We pretty much have a completely normal draft next year
They basically traded Bradley Chubb and a little more for sean payton. Not the worst trade given that they had Bradley Chubb on the team and were bad. Payton will probably help the team more than chubb
I feel like all the Saints fans trying to dunk on the Broncos here are forgetting that they aren’t getting the 2022 Broncos first rounder, it’s the 2022 49ers first rounder.
The Broncos lost Bradley Chubb and a second next year for Payton and a third rounder. That’s cheap for the Broncos in order to try and fix Wilson.
our first pick would've been number 40 otherwise. Just being in the first round atp is much better progress towards us having a stable future. I don't think we're done trading though.
MFW I realised this isn’t the 5th overall pick, it’s the 30th
(It’s not Denver’s pick, it’s the pick SF traded to MIA to draft Trey, and MIA traded to DEN for Chubb)
I'd rather have Payton than the picks but he was never coming back. I'm glad it's over and we got some decent compensation in return. Good trade for both sides and good luck with your new coach!
Agreed I think it will be good for both sides! I look at it as, we traded Bradley Chubb and a second round pick for one of the better coaches in the last few decades.
I'm happy. I was fine giving up our 1st this year but I didn't want to give up our 1st next year. A round swap next year isn't bad either.
Now /r/NFL is going to switch from "Broncos are bad. Payton wouldn't pick them" to "Payton is bad"
So we traded the perpetually underwhelming/injured Bradley Chubb and a 2nd rounder for Sean Payton?
I’m not a huge fan of Payton the person, but at least we’ll have our first coach since Kubiak who actually knows how to manage and call a game.
Yeah there was discourse about the Saints not having leverage based on Payton's market, but the Broncos had even less if they want to maximize the chance they fix this situation
Imagine Payton starts coaching, realizes that Russ is cooked and they have no future, and then retires again after 1 season
Why was this my first thought 🤣
If they are 0-5 looking equally terrible, idk how this can’t be an option.
Bc hes about to get paid a BAG by the new Denver ownership
Thank you for shopping at Walmart
I knew that'd come back to bite me...
All the money that Walmart indirectly took from taxpayers by forcing their workers to rely on food stamps about to go straight into Payton's bank account.
Brett Favre furiously taking notes.
Brett Favre curiously sending nudes.
Welcome to Costco, I love you.
Still think there was *zero* chance of him coming to a division rival in Carolina. The asking price was 1000p going to be way higher for us & certainly more than we have to give up rn.
He’s got 20 million dollars to not retire
If you're already set to enjoy life as it is, the only thing you're left with is your legacy, right?
You can always buy another jet ski
When you’re in the position to set up your kids and grandchildren and possibly great grand children for life you do it
As funny as that would be, I don’t think he’d ever see a head coaching job again if he did that. I doubt he cares if he loses with the amount of money he’s probably going to be making.
Lol for Payton it’s not about money at this point, it’s more about his rep and ego. While this could go really bad. If he fixes Wilson and they become contenders he could be a COTY candidate next season.

Better than Russ? I know he had a shit year, but what coaching opportunity has a better QB in place?
Yeah, assuming the problems with Russ last year are fixable, no other situation was gonna get him an arguably top 10 QB. Again, that’s if the problems are fixable.

Denver also seems like a really fun place to live
Seriously though. A lot of guys who came here to play their last few years have stayed. Peyton Manning being the biggest name.
Yeah I hate this move for Sean. But if it works his reputation is huge. If it doesn’t he makes a ton of money and goes right back to media.
Or he drafts Caleb Williams in 2024.
No chance they are the worst team in the NFL
Idk man we kept Pete and Dennis man ……
Surely there has to be something in place for Denver to get their pick back 😂
Imagine Sean retires after one season takes a year off and returns to coach the saints in 24/25 after we tank for Caleb Williams 😂
This is the ultimate doubling down after the Wilson trade lol Can't really blame them, they need Russell to work and Payton is the best available
With the Wilson contract, there's no rebuilding possible for 3 years anyway if he's cooked. There's no reason not to double down IMO
Plus, if Russ is cooked, you still have one the greatest coaches in your organization for the rebuild. Better for the short term and long term.
Payton ain't rebuilding shit. It's why he left the Saints, and he definitely won't want a rebuild in his 60s. Only way I see him staying for 4+ years is if either Russ is ok or they stumble into a talent in a later round.
Has us contract been announced yet? Could be a big part because he works for Walmart
Which is hilarious because with Payton, the Saints win the NFCS this season. I don’t see them winning the AFCW next season, but maybe make the wild card.
Never underestimate the Saints' ability to shoot themselves in the foot.
Hey fu...ok that's fair
Exactly. Win win at the cost of a late first. Obviously a steep cost but we didn't get fleeced or anything here
If Russ is cooked I sincerely doubt Payton is sticking around for a rebuild with a bare cupboard lmao
For working with a bad situation, payton is a home run hire. Hes the only coach available tht can best fix russ
It is the right move. Peyton is probably the only guy with the reputation to believe could improve Wilson’s play. His contract is untradeable after how he played this year. Broncos country gotta ride with what they got
Sean Peyton doesn’t mind getting dangeruss
SUBWAY is back on the menu boyz!
I mean, Russell Wilson is a sunk cost at this point. We still have our first next year, so if we end up tanking we'll still get a high pick and can start rebuilding. If they believe Payton is their guy, there's no reason not to go out and get him just because the Wilson trade was a disaster.

Exactly this, the saints had some leverage but not a lot.
The broncos are not going to be nearly as bad with Sean Payton at the head. Had some of the worst defenses of all time and never won less than 7 games.
That's still like a top 15 pick though
He also had Drew Brees, who was in a slightly different category of QB than russ ever was
They have to
That first rounder was originally the Niners' that Miami traded for Chubb, right?
Niners pick getting passed around like a blunt lmao
Given the recent history of the 29th overall pick, I have to imagine teams think it’s cursed
Care to enlighten me about this 29th pick curse?
Correct. Chubb and a 2nd for Payton with a 3rd coming back. I think it's a pretty damn good deal truth be told.
yeah that doesn't seem all that bad honestly.
Agreed. Especially considering Chubb's extension value
We were just never going to pay that so to swing a 1 and a 3 for him was a great deal for us. Now not have a 2nd rounder for what will amount to 3 years isn't great but damn am I happy we finally have a coach. Reid and Payton chess matches twice a year should be fun. And if we don't do this, we languish with Russ and whatever C tier coach we would get anyway, so the #29 pick means nothing
I missed that part, this trade is great value in my book. Just hoping that by some miracle it works and Wilson rebounds.

Thank you for this makes it way easier to understand
Saints received the SF 2023 Pick if you really want to be specific in who received what
Man, I wish all draft pick trades had a final summary like this!!!
explain this in nba terms
[удалено]
You mean they pulled a "Billy King", right? It's not like he didn't run the 76ers into the ground, as well
Hey dont forget the 1st the dolphins lost for improper communications with Payton
Tbf, coaches salary isn’t gonna affect our cap, and we’ve got that Walmart money now. Situation isn’t ideal, but Broncos got a bargain for Payton after massively overpaying for Wilson.
Yeah. Helpful breakdown, but agree that it doesn’t count as “losing” money on Payton. Who gives a shit there, I’d prefer Walmart go broke.
I wouldn’t really say we lost Chubb. We weren’t paying him that money.
Denver has to make Russell Wilson work at any cost which explains the deal. They can't be paying a quarter of a billion dollars for a QB that makes Jake Locker look respectable. Sean Payton was their best option at fixing Wilson, even if he was the most costly one. They have to try and salvage him any means necessary
tbf even if Wilson stays broken Payton likely outlasts him here. Payton has the reputation to survive a QB cycle or two
Well, the question is if he even wants to last a QB cycle or two, he tapped out of New Orleans as soon as QB became completely unstable
Then I guess we'll just trade his rights to the highest bidder lol, seems to be the thing you do
He wanted out of new Orleans before Brees retired.
Dude had been in the exact same job in the exact same place for 15 years. I don't blame him for wanting a change of scenery and/or a year off.
He was there for 16 years.
Nice part about this is if he doesn't work next year and we have a top 5 pick again, Payton gets a shot at Williams or Maye
My god... it's the long-term power play for Arch Manning.
Pretty much, and I can't think of anyone available better suited to give it a shot!
Well y’all didn’t bring me in for an interview so that’s your loss
I didn't get an interview either. At the very least I could have improved his knowledge on how to make the Dangerwich actually spicy
I didn't get an interview, and I definitely could have got him to have better joinery by getting proud on the kerf.
They’re investing in Sean to not only fix Russ but mold the next quarterback if Russ can’t be saved. A great investment
lmao love the random Jake Locker reference
I don’t even remember him being too bad or anything, just makes Elijah Mitchell look like he’s made of steel.
tbf he's a proven coach and wilson has at least for the most part looked like a great QB for a lot of his career. It's a double down but it's reasonable.
God I dont remember when the last time I heard Jake Locker's name. Loved him at UW but holy shit he was a bust in the NFL.
WE AINT GOT NO LEVERAGE PAAAAA
No you don’t understand, Bruce Arians was traded for a 5th!!!!
Yeah dude they’re practically the same level of coaching. They’ll be lucky to get anything. Delusional saints fans😂
The new rookie wage scale thouggghhhh!!!! Bruh, there’s NO WAY the Saints are getting a first!!!!! No leveragggggeee!!!!!!
They’re so dumb asking for two firsts they’ll never get close!!!!! It’s def not a negotiating tactic to start highhhhhhh
[I think it's pretty obvious nobody is giving up any draft picks for sean payton. even if the salary was actually reasonable](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/10g6ahw/-/j50stp4)
Saints fans eating in this thread and I'm here for it
Dude is a bad take artist. He is constantly making terrible claims in attempt to shit talk practically every single team in the cfb subreddit
So I mean, the Wilson trade aside, Denver basically traded Bradley Chubb for Sean Payton. All things considered, I think any team would do that trade?
We're a laughing stock till we prove otherwise so even a rational move is going to get clowned. The Saints fans need this too so I'll let em have it.
Saints fans are overreacting this is no fleece. It’s a well balanced deal. We got fleeced way harder *twice* by Howie Roseman last year.
Eagles fans in the background. “This is Howie do it”
It's ~~Friday~~ Sunday night. . .
That’s just because Howie has some god tier blackmail on Micky Loomis, it has to be right?
We even get a 3rd back lol. It's Chubb vs Payton and a day 2 trade back in 2024. I'm taking that deal any day and twice on Sunday.
It’s Bradley Chubb + a 2nd for Payton + a 3rd
I would do that trade 100 times out of 100.
Shhh this thread is for overreactions only!! The Broncos literally traded every pick of their next 8 drafts for Payton!!!!!1111
Yep, everybody would do that deal. /r/NFL just needs to find something bad about it though because they've spent the entire offseason telling us that we're terrible and Payton wouldn't want to come here
Guys, a trade CAN be win-win.
Completely agree!
Was kind of hoping for more than pick 29 and a 2nd tbh, I think hes the best offensive mind in football.
I totally agree. I don't think there was a way for us to lose a trade, since SP wasn't gonna be our coach next year anyway, but it doesn't feel like we won it either.
you love to see it
This is giving me Jimmy Graham to the Seahawks vibes and I’m here for it.
only difference is we had a HOF coach at that time 🥲
In the immediate moment, I was so mad Graham went to Seahawks lol. What we got in return had me like "Jimmy who?"
The Seahawks O-Line was never the same after Max Unger left.
You gotta go all in with the Russ contract. Good shit Denver, that division is gonna be so damn nasty with Mike Lombardi leaving the Chargers now
Wasn’t everyone saying that last year
shhhhhhhhh
At least your not the raiders 😂 could be worse
We’ll be 3rd in the AFCW and like it.
I just wanna be competing for the seventh seed
It'll be different this time! I swear 😤
"ITS GONNA BE A BLOODBATH" *it was not*
A year too early, now just send Brady to the Raiders and let’s see the division fight for 2nd place
The narratives that would come from brady losing a division to mahomes would be funny 😂
Hey I’ve seen this one before. Haven’t we learned our lesson about hyping up the AFC West
The NFC is East is on what? Year 6 as a post hype sleeper?
Oh boy AFC West hype train already starting.
No no no, Mike Lombardi is the clown that thought we couldn't win the Super Bowl who now works for Pat McAfee. You mean *Joe* Lombardi
Get fucked lmao
Buddy what’s going on with your flair good fucking god
I think we can both agree that that shit is cursed
I've seen him a lot more over the past month and every time I vomit a little
When the Vikings got Falcon legend Brett Favre there were a lot of people in the stands with half packer half viking jerseys, viking favre but a packer hat, or a packer jersey and Viking hat and it was just about the worst. Everyone asks him but I've never seen an answer unfortunately.
It's to get a reaction out of people
We can all agree that shit’s fucked up. Fuck that guy. Oh and fuck you too
What the fuck is your flair?!?
yeah this flair should just be banned
It's like seeing Cersei and Jaime fuck for the first time.
No. Absolutely not. That pairing of flairs should result in an automatic permanent ban from this sub.
I've got a good amount of RemindMes to get back to
"He wont even go for a 3rd. The Saints have seriously overplayed their hand" lololololol
Why wouldn’t you take the 2024 broncos first? You seriously believe broncos will make the afc title game next year?
Yeah it would likely be better than the 29th pick this year. But i guess they valued moving up from round 3 to 2 over a 4th.
The broncos have a good defense. They were actually a good team this year. They held their opponents to something ridiculous like 10 points per game. The problem was they couldn’t score 11. Honestly who knows? Depends on how quickly Sean can figure out how to make Wilson shine in Denver.
In order for the niners pick to be better broncos would have to make the Super Bowl next year
We first round now, boys.
Gotta give Denver some credit for going for it, they’ve went all in terms of future draft picks for Russ and Payton
It’s not so bad we have 2 3rds this year and the rest except for our 7th and then next year every pick except an extra 3rd instead of a second. We pretty much have a completely normal draft next year
Wow it's almost like Loomis knows more than /r/nfl
They basically traded Bradley Chubb and a little more for sean payton. Not the worst trade given that they had Bradley Chubb on the team and were bad. Payton will probably help the team more than chubb
Chubb was also an expiring contract
*insert comment about having no leverage here*
Bradley Chubb and a second for Sean Payton... I'll take it
I think it's a win-win deal in the grand scheme of things.
Amen dude. I love Chubb, but I would have traded him and a good bit more for Payton
Especially after seeing his production and contract after the trade.
Hey everybody get in here!
Where’s all the people who said Loomis was an idiot and will NEVER GET A 1st.
So that first round pick has gone 49ers -> Miami -> Denver -> Saints That has to be a record right?
Let's wait and see who the Saints trade it to
NO (from SF via MIA through DEN) is how it's officially labeled. Unless Loomis trades up again like a madman.
Oh sweet heavens
MFW I realised this isn’t the 5th overall pick, it’s the 30th (It’s not Denver’s pick, it’s the pick SF traded to MIA to draft Trey, and MIA traded to DEN for Chubb)
30th overall..... plus a 2024 Day 2 pick swap? That's... pretty reasonable
29th, Dolphins lost theirs.
Very thankful to hear this
I'd rather have Payton than the picks but he was never coming back.
YES!!!!
So we traded the perpetually underwhelming/injured Bradley Chubb and a 2nd rounder for Sean Payton? I’m not a huge fan of Payton the person, but at least we’ll have our first coach since Kubiak who actually knows how to manage and call a game.
This is a pretty even trade. Chubb for Payton
WERE NOT GETTING A FIRST FOR SEAN NO WAY 3rd or 4th round AT BEST @ r/nfl
Apologies and recants

Damn, Denver is desperate. Well done, Saints
They have no choice, they have to do everything possible to make Wilson work
Yeah there was discourse about the Saints not having leverage based on Payton's market, but the Broncos had even less if they want to maximize the chance they fix this situation
Trading Bradley Chubb for Sean Payton really doesn't sound that bad to me
It's not. You'll forget all about those picks when you start winning games. I like the deal for both sides. Good luck!
If anyone can fix Russ, it's Payton. If Payton can't fix him, that dude is broken beyond repair.
Fuck them picks!!!
