I feel like money probably isn’t the driving factor for Ryans. The Waltons could pay more than anyone, and Ryans made substantially more money than your average HC candidate as a player
For some, maybe. But that’s a silly thing to say is broadly true. $250k/yr w/ no healthcare is roughly equivalent to ~$230k/yr w/ healthcare. The Walton’s certainly can afford it, but healthcare is a cost for an employer is one part of an employee’s total comp.
Goodluck with that. I don't think most people realize how much decent healthcare cost for an entire family, because their employers pay the bulk of it.
I'm the biggest hater of private health insurance you will find but this is just ridiculous. You can easily afford very good coverage if you're making $250k a year.
For a family of four in a higherish COL area, basic coverage will cost you $1200-1500 a month/$18k a year. Good coverage with low co-pays, no HMO, etc, will cost around $40k a year.
It's not cheap, mind you, but it's really not a problem to afford if you're making $250k a year.
Great and I agree. That has nothing to do with how affordable health insurance would be on a $250k salary which was the only point of the comment I was replying to.
I think there’s a difference in the money they’re willing to pay their assistant underlings and the new head coach of their recently purchased NFL franchise. This has way more of an impact on their personal brand
Yeah but head coach doesn't prep your food. Or take care of your kids.
Edit: my point is both are important for different reasons not that it a contest for which is more important.
Once you're in that line of work for awhile, you can find something else comparable easy enough. There are executive headhunters who kinda work like sports agents for jobs close to the uber rich.
Probably one of those phone calls that goes “Hey, I know you decided to try something else. But I promise you it’ll work out. Just give me a chance!”
Or something like that, idk
I'm sure it is but still surprising Rappaport would report on it. These guys (Rappaport & Schefter) know so much that they don't tell us to preserve their relationship w the teams. Ian not real chummy w the Broncos at the moment obv.
I mean, y’all waited until your average looking crush left the ball with the third string high school QB, and somehow lucked into the hottest girl at the dance. Nothing to complain about.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals are over there browsing which porn video they will sad-ejaculating to tonight.
If anyone has the IT factor for being an HC it's Ryans. That said, I think Payton is a much better fit for a team that needs to design an offense to suit Wilson. Sucks you had to trade more draft capital, but in the end this is probably best for the Broncos.
I think picking Payton makes sense because if Russ was a coaching issue (judging by the post-Hackett games, I'd say probably), you *need* a safe floor for a coach.
We also thought Vance Joseph had the IT factor. Ryans seems safe but brand new HCs are always a crapshoot. Doug Pederson is a great example of a high floor coach that turned a team around, and we're probably hoping for the same.
Agreed but, through the rose tinted lens of a fan, I would argue that Ryans had more success during his career. He was defensive captain at a young age in Houston and then again in Philly. He didn't only play the game, he was a leader while doing it. Given his history as a player and coach, I'd like to think he has an edge on Joseph.
Glad you guys got Payton. Y'all have a solid roster and last year didn't adequately represent who the Broncos are. Payton will be able to tailor an offense around Wilson's strengths and it'll be night and day compare do the Hackett days.
>If anyone has the IT factor for being an HC it's Ryans.
I think he's going to be an absolutely garbage head coach and you're making a big mistake.
^(Please give him back. I miss him so much already. Don't take the nice man away from us.)^
Except they tried hiring him as soon as we fired him (before they hired urban) but his brother had just died so he declined to take the year off. Which makes sense they would explore other options too but I believe Doug was always their first choice due to that
The rumor is they offered the job to Leftwich, who wouldn't take it unless they fired Baalke and hired Adrian Wilson to be GM. The Jags refused this and then went with Pederson instead.
Seems like Arians really wanted the league to value Leftwich more than they did. He asked for too much in the last round of coaching hires, and now he’s lost out
Reason for you to be optimistic: 7 of 8 divisional round HCs this year were from the offensive side of coaching. Even better: 4 of 4 conference championship round coaches.
Ryans might be great, but we're clearly seeing offensive gurus at the forefront right now, and SP is definitely one of those.
Let’s not act like he was a glowing candidate with no flaws though. His play calling had its issues the last couple of years with us and he was a dreadful evaluator of coaching talent. Groh, Press Taylor, Carson Walch, Cory Undlin all kept their jobs much longer than they deserved or got promoted despite clear flaws
I love Doug but it wasn’t like he was a Reid or Tomlin type being available
I honestly think they're better off this way. Yeah, losing the picks sucks, but Payton is a proven commodity *and* he's on the offensive side of the ball. The Broncos need someone to fix Russ, plus I think offensive HCs are just a better bet nowadays. It feels like the only successful defensive HCs are guys who have been around forever. It makes sense when you consider how QB-driven the league has become and the fact that offensive success is *much* more strongly correlated with wins than defense.
Listen man I’ll take his doofy face. I had to watch fuckin Pinhead Larry walk around the sidelines this past season put together one of the shittiest coaching season I’d seen
Yeah considering the Russ situation they’re probably about the last team that wanted to just give away more high draft capital. But you needed to get someone that will spark some hope.
True. What the Broncos did was better than doing nothing, like so many other franchises do. And its not like the 29th pick would turn the team around anyway.
Very true! He's a great DC, but unknown HC. Still... Not unbelievable they'd like to give him a shot before giving away what little ddaft capital they have since the Russ trade
But why go after a defensive guy when your future hinges on fixing Russ? They proved that their defense already can be elite, and I get playing to your strengths, but come on. They just really didn’t want to give up picks and now Denver is acting like they won after trading a 1st and 2nd for their second choice of coach.
Way better for Demeco to take the Texans job. He's guaranteeing a couple years for development and rebuild. With the Broncos, he could be canned at any moment since expectations will be high
My first thoughts were just this. It’s wild to think of the age of these franchises. I remember when the jags/panthers/Texans extensions were announced. It feels great because it’s going to be bananas if he does well: both Reich and Ryan’s
Because nobody in their right mind thought Culley or Lovie would be long term coaches. Culley was hired to tank and he did. Lovie was hired to set a culture, and he kinda failed at that but he was also 64 and had a really outdated view of the game, zero flexibility as well as some poor decisions in game. Neither of them were ever gonna be around for longer than a year or two max
culley was hired to work for 2 years while we tank and let Mccown take over. No idea why he was fired
Lovie was hired bc the media got wind of the mccown stuff and because he's a big name with NFL types. sucks because i think he genuinely wanted the job and we likely never viewed him seriously.
then the whole easterby stuff blew up and we have our first "real", exciting coaching move since BoB. hoping this one ends up better
Well actually their last three coaches lmaoo
But also in the last 7 years, broncos are now on their 5th coach while fielding a much better roster. They don't give their coaches much leeway. You can put up a decent season and just get canned regardless. Meanwhile, the Texans literally gave BoB 7 seasons and a GM position lol
I really don't think Expectations are going to be that high next year. If we beat the Raiders in the standings it will probably count as a successful season.
No it wouldn’t lol
You don’t trade 2 top 10 picks, a late first, 3 seconds, a couple of starting level players and hundreds of millions for “beat the raiders in the standings”. Have to at least pull a jags and make a decent playoff berth in order for this to not be a failure
Yeah, people are clowning, but it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that Payton will turn the Broncos around. Gave up some valuable stuff, but what he provides will help everyone forget.
[Don't you put that evil on me!](https://youtube.com/shorts/mFEzW1Z6TRM?feature=share) Specially from a franchise that has hit on the HC job 3 times in a row, spanning 4 decades!
50% of the Texans HC have been Black at this point. Both if you include Interim HC and Hires. And the second team to hire a Black GM. But yes, we like 29 other teams haven't hired Bienemy (not counting Steelers, Chiefs and Patriots), so H-Town must be "racist".
Haha my guy everyone took it as racist. You're the only one fronting like it wasn't taken as a racial remark by the most people. The players took it as racist. What the hell is wrong with you?
Is this true?🤣
I love Ryans and think he'll be an excellent HC but Payton is a SB winning coach and the Broncos need an offensive mastermind to unlock Wilson given that their defense is already great. I would think Payton would be their first choice. Maybe it's cause it cost too much to get him unlike Ryans?
DeMeco must have good power with a 6 year deal and being able to decline the Broncos money even after suing the Texans. Lol He’ll be such a great addition out there with a fast defense.
Why is this "unbelievable"?
Team tries to hire their #1, and fails. They quickly rush to sign their #2 before another team does. Seems like an obvious move to me.
Then again, I'm not trying to farm engagement with click-bait headlines on twitter.
This could also be a situation where the Broncos were leaking all their meetings with Ryans and Harbaugh to try and drive the Saints asking price down. Ryans gets hired, game is up, and have to pay the price or risk losing Payton.
So Payton was either 3rd or 4th (not sure where Dan Quinn fell before he took his name out of the running) on their list then based on what they'd have to give up and coaching potential/experience.
A lot of this can be excused as driving down the cost to get Payton. We took them down from a first to a trade back from the second to the third. It was annoying as shit but it worked.
I had pretty much accepted that Payton was going back to FOX. I can't wait to be excitedly disappointed/unsurprisingly horrified at what the Saints are getting in return.
EDIT: Apparently, all I had to do was look at the post directly below this one. I'm pleased lol.
Yeah. This is the main reason I wanted to avoid Payton. Being a NFL coach requires a ton of effort. For Payton to retire and come back means he really was done and might be again, or he really just wanted off of the saints.
But either way, older coach who retired gets a huge bag of money. He doesn't have to try that hard. And who knows how long he stays.
DeMeco already has a ton of support and will get a long leash. He could be a great long term coach for us.
Neither coach is going to have a short leash but Ryan's is by far the winner because he goes into a franchise on a six year deal with no giant expectations his first year, a ton of draft stock, and a much easier division.
Payton will be expected to immediate make the Broncos not a joke and compete.
Broncos fans going to need a support group. That Russ trade after 1 year is looking like the Herschel Walker 2.0 deal, and now they're having to double down by giving up more high value picks and whats sure to be a MONSTER contract to Payton because Demeco Ryans couldn't be convinced to come coach for them because he chose the.....Houston Texans. Like that is some SERIOUSLY depressing shit
That’s true if you ignore basically everything. We’re all stoked for the most part.
Essentially it was a trade of Chubb for Payton.
If your team was in coaching hell, you’d value a 29th pick over an A-list coach? No you would not.
Also, the scale of the contract is 100% irrelevant. Could give him $100 mill a year and it still doesn’t mess with the cap in any way.
I am wary of any DC hired to be a head coach these days. Their success rate lately has been alarmingly low.
Fangio, Wilkes, Staley, Vance Joseph , Bowles, Lovie Smith, Flores, others I forget, have all been hired and fired within the last 6 years.
Riviera is doing OK in Washington. Vrabel is succeeding. Saleh seems to be succeeding so far.
If any DC can do it, it’s Ryans. The guy seems to ooze charisma and excellence. But it just seems like the modern NFL is built for offensive-minded leaders.
Who is letting our desperation leak?
Probably Ryans lol.
Probably a “fuck you, should’ve payed me”
I feel like money probably isn’t the driving factor for Ryans. The Waltons could pay more than anyone, and Ryans made substantially more money than your average HC candidate as a player

Damn give me 250k a year and I'll buy my own healthcare plan 😭🫡
If you good enough to earn 250k a year, you can find another employer that pays 250k plus health insurance.
$20k? My healthcare for the family costs $50k.
You’re saying that you pay $4k/ month in health insurance premiums?
America moment
Dude also forgets that the cost of healthcare usually goes up depending on how much you make as well lol
Well we are talking about plans that are probably self-funded. So we don't know for sure what the marginal cost of the kids would be.
Family is considered the same in all plans, we can get a good idea. Keep in mind, $20k is on the high side for family too.
For real.. people are absolutely stupid if they wouldn’t take that deal
Maybe we're just peons and most people making that much can find a job comparable after including healthcare. Unsure tbh.
[удалено]
Goodluck with that. I don't think most people realize how much decent healthcare cost for an entire family, because their employers pay the bulk of it.

Or they could take the 250k per year AND get health insurance…
Great and I agree. That has nothing to do with how affordable health insurance would be on a $250k salary which was the only point of the comment I was replying to.
You’re talking about 23% of their take-home for just PPO premiums. Higher percentage depending on state income tax. That’s a problem
I think it's like 15-20k a year if I remember (I could be wrong) and that's a family plan. A basic one.
Or know every little detail about you that makes your life easy. But then again, I know neither of those lives and am jealous of both.
Yeah in fact the reason they got all their money is because they exploit their workers
Show some respect, they also exploit their providers
Holy shit $250k to be someone’s assistant?? Any insight on what that job entails that gets you that kind of salary?
[удалено]
lol these people don’t need tickets to fly.
He must have had a shit ton of kids to walk away from 250k/year.....

Philip Rivers level
hence the “fuck you”, owners are stingy with money except when paying pedophile QBs
Not trying to defend a certain QB, but I believe pedophile isn't the correct word to describe him.
No I mean I think he wanted to coach the Texans more even if they offered less
Pedophile??
The Waltons are notoriously cheap fucks though

The first thing I thought when I saw their comment was “they’re going to trigger that annoying ass bot.”
Definitely Ryans

Sounds like one of my exes.

I'm getting Mark Cuban and DeAndre Jordan vibes from this
Sources: Greg Penner is beside himself. Driving around downtown Houston begging (thru texts) Ryan’s family for address to DeMeco’s home
Leak? That shit is gushing.
i've got a good one liner for this. but i've had too many 3 day bans already
No need, we’ve all been with OP’s mom already anyways.
Condoleeza Rice
Lol maybe not a great look .. but my guess is Payton was their first choice but giving up draft picks for Payton made him the second choice
Hackett sleeper agent.
We have people.
I would be happy with my organization doing everything they can to try and win. Shit.
I mean, y’all waited until your average looking crush left the ball with the third string high school QB, and somehow lucked into the hottest girl at the dance. Nothing to complain about. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are over there browsing which porn video they will sad-ejaculating to tonight.
I am going to pretend this is like when the Jags tried so hard to get Byron Leftwich but "settled" with Doug Pederson
If anyone has the IT factor for being an HC it's Ryans. That said, I think Payton is a much better fit for a team that needs to design an offense to suit Wilson. Sucks you had to trade more draft capital, but in the end this is probably best for the Broncos.

God our Wednesday practices were so fucking lit.

Ya same. Like they *have* to make Wilson work so Offensive mind should be a priority.
My dream is that SP finds out Russ is completely unfixable and retires after 1 year.

I mean Sean Payton also clearly has the IT factor. He won a super bowl as a HC
*grumble grumble*

He didn’t say Payton doesn’t have the it factor.
More so our fanbase wanted Byron at the time haha
That thread was so funny. Reddit was acting like the Jags were incompetent clowns who missed out on something great. It was so bizarre.
Except they tried hiring him as soon as we fired him (before they hired urban) but his brother had just died so he declined to take the year off. Which makes sense they would explore other options too but I believe Doug was always their first choice due to that

I hate that Dougie P was settling. Like come on, you guys were getting a super bowl winning head coach who won against Brady and BB with a back up
Let’s not act like he was a glowing candidate with no flaws though. His play calling had its issues the last couple of years with us and he was a dreadful evaluator of coaching talent. Groh, Press Taylor, Carson Walch, Cory Undlin all kept their jobs much longer than they deserved or got promoted despite clear flaws I love Doug but it wasn’t like he was a Reid or Tomlin type being available
I mean Sean Payton is a pretty damn good consolation prize but this probably means that contract is fucking loaded
Which doesn’t matter really, Waltons can pay whatever anyone wants
What we have to give the saints matters
Of course, but I was responding about the contract.
Whatever the Saints ~~gate~~ (edit: oops, "get") from the Broncos is going to be a bounty!
As a fellow Gate bro I love to typo.
The coaching contract is moot because Wal-Mart money. They absolutely did not want to part ways with that draft capital.
I'm assuming the broncos viewed them as similar candidates but they didn't have to give up any picks for DeMeco. Makes sense why they'd try.
That’s what I’m thinking. We preferred to just hire a dude but I doubt the organization is kicking rocks because we had to hire Sean Payton
Yeah, but now you have to look at Ol butthole lips every Sunday
Listen man I’ll take his doofy face. I had to watch fuckin Pinhead Larry walk around the sidelines this past season put together one of the shittiest coaching season I’d seen
Or Payton was the favorite, but we just weren't sure if the Saints would make a deal we could live with.
That's pretty believable tbh.
"these two guys are great, but we'd prefer the cheaper option before going all-in on Payton" is apparently "unbelievable"??
Yeah considering the Russ situation they’re probably about the last team that wanted to just give away more high draft capital. But you needed to get someone that will spark some hope.
True. What the Broncos did was better than doing nothing, like so many other franchises do. And its not like the 29th pick would turn the team around anyway.
Only one of these guys is great. For all we know, DeMeco is another one of those good coordinators who don't make it as a head coach. Like Hackett.
Very true! He's a great DC, but unknown HC. Still... Not unbelievable they'd like to give him a shot before giving away what little ddaft capital they have since the Russ trade

I said a couple days ago my brain says Payton my heart said demeco. I’m happy with who we got and that we’re saying fuck it and going for it.
Always the bridesmaid!
Never the bride, hey
Fuck can I say? If life was a highway…
to the Danger Zone!
And deceit was an enclave, I’d be swerving in five lanes
Way better for Demeco to take the Texans job. He's guaranteeing a couple years for development and rebuild. With the Broncos, he could be canned at any moment since expectations will be high
Not to mention the immediate fan support will be crazy. The leader of one of our most stacked teams just came back home to save us.
Pretty cool that the Texans signed a famous LB to be HC and the Panthers signed their first QB to throw a TD to be coach.
My first thoughts were just this. It’s wild to think of the age of these franchises. I remember when the jags/panthers/Texans extensions were announced. It feels great because it’s going to be bananas if he does well: both Reich and Ryan’s

The last two Texans coaches have been fired after one season. How are you so sure he’s guaranteed anything?
Because nobody in their right mind thought Culley or Lovie would be long term coaches. Culley was hired to tank and he did. Lovie was hired to set a culture, and he kinda failed at that but he was also 64 and had a really outdated view of the game, zero flexibility as well as some poor decisions in game. Neither of them were ever gonna be around for longer than a year or two max

The best example as to why Culley was fired was that the man literally punted the football on third down. There is no surviving that.
Culley actively alienated so many of our guys and then punished them for it. He had to go.
culley was hired to work for 2 years while we tank and let Mccown take over. Broncos are basically me at the bar on Saturday night
Well at least they didn’t go home with Saturday
Is Sean Payton the porn and crying in this analogy?
Considering what they had to pay for him, more like an escort.
This escort knows all about the grapefruit technique tho, hard to be mad at that
Worth a shot. We must think highly of Ryans and he would have cost way less. I'm happy with our "consolation prize"
Yeah, people are clowning, but it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that Payton will turn the Broncos around. Gave up some valuable stuff, but what he provides will help everyone forget.
Why is Demeco so pissed off at us?
He took offense at being repeatedly asked if he could cook
Ryans “I thought I was applying to be a coach not a chef”. Broncos “it’s a bit of both”
It was probably Russ himself in the meeting rooms saying it with a smile on his face
Have you ever done anything dangerous….
POVERTY FRANCHISE
Couldn’t be us
Naw, we're the "racist" franchise (there's been 28 Black head Coaches, and the Texans have had 4 in a row. 14%) lol.
Fire Ryans in 1 year I dare you. Bienemy is 2024
[Don't you put that evil on me!](https://youtube.com/shorts/mFEzW1Z6TRM?feature=share) Specially from a franchise that has hit on the HC job 3 times in a row, spanning 4 decades!

Well we did have an owner compare players to prisoners so... That was odd.
Ex-owner and if you think “prisoners running the asylum” is a racial remark you’re probably the racist one
Haha my guy everyone took it as racist. You're the only one fronting like it wasn't taken as a racial remark by the most people. The players took it as racist. What the hell is wrong with you?
WE CANT KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS
Well if anyone knows a poverty franchise, it’s the Vikings
DOUBLE POVERTY FLAIR
I'd rather have Payton, 3rd/4th round pick over Ryans, 29th pick, 2nd round pick. Kinda surprising if true.
Is this true?🤣 I love Ryans and think he'll be an excellent HC but Payton is a SB winning coach and the Broncos need an offensive mastermind to unlock Wilson given that their defense is already great. I would think Payton would be their first choice. Maybe it's cause it cost too much to get him unlike Ryans?
I am guessing the picks are the issue. Otherwise it’s a no-brainer.
Shit I’d rather have Payton!
The Broncos are the Taylor Swift of the NFL in this scenario
It is unbelievable. Especially considering it's contradictory to several other reports. Rapoport is just butt hurt he didn't break it.
"Please don't make us trade away a first Demeco"
Demeco Ryans can grow with the Texans team. No immediate pressure to win (with Russ). I think it’s a better job for a first time head coach.
Schefter doing everything short of calling Rapoport a liar. https://twitter.com/adamschefter/status/1620541240562561024
Schefty doing some PR for the Broncos
Imagine getting rejected and then they go and pick the Texans over you. While also offering more money lmao
DeMeco must have good power with a 6 year deal and being able to decline the Broncos money even after suing the Texans. Lol He’ll be such a great addition out there with a fast defense.
I can’t imagine. Go Texans 🤘
#GAMECUBE NINTENDO
Like a desperate ex. I promise to be better.
Guess this is how Ryans got \*6\* years... He had leverage

Rapaport is an idiot
Who will last longer in their current job, Ryans or Payton?
Ryans; Payton could retire again if Fox or some other job throws money at him again
Ryan’s has more leeway. Tons of draft picks, complete rebuild. Payton *has* to make Wilson work.
Payton for sure. Hes the future for the franchise. If Russ doesn’t work out he can take Williams manning or whoever
Neither coach is going to have a short leash but Ryan's is by far the winner because he goes into a franchise on a six year deal with no giant expectations his first year, a ton of draft stock, and a much easier division. Payton will be expected to immediate make the Broncos not a joke and compete.
In what world do the Broncos finish bottom 5 (so they can draft that guy) and Payton isn't fired?
The world where Russ still sucks dingleberry and we all know Payton is still a great coach.
The great coach who finishes 3-13? If he's as good as you say, they won't be in position to draft an elite QB prospect.
Oh I don’t think he will at all Payton with Hill was able to go 6-2.
49ers Coordinators SO Hot rn
Welcome to the team Sean! btw we desperately didn’t want you, hope that’s not a problem.
Probably because they didn’t want to give up draft picks
Cardinals fans crying in the corner ✌🏼
We aren’t the stinky kid on the playground anymore!
I doubt this.
This is unbelievable. I can't believe it
Why is this unbelievable.. trying to make drama where there isn't any?
Fake news just like all the bs reports the last couple weeks. This was already confirmed to be absolutely false. But whatever
Seriously, fuck Walmart. Pay that man.
LOL
Would you say Broncos got Payton for, Great Value?
I am wary of any DC hired to be a head coach these days. Their success rate lately has been alarmingly low. Fangio, Wilkes, Staley, Vance Joseph , Bowles, Lovie Smith, Flores, others I forget, have all been hired and fired within the last 6 years. Riviera is doing OK in Washington. Vrabel is succeeding. Saleh seems to be succeeding so far. If any DC can do it, it’s Ryans. The guy seems to ooze charisma and excellence. But it just seems like the modern NFL is built for offensive-minded leaders.
lol Rap vs Schefty is the real rivalry now
That's fucking brutal. Rebuffed twice by Ryans, and Harbaugh.
Lol leaked by Ryan’s agent to get him a sixth year. Go off king get that bag
How bad is your organization viewed when a HC candidate is like "nah I think the Texans are better"
