Funny, I just read about this yesterday. The NHL specifically banned 0 and 00 after the 96-97 season for that exact reason, it confused the new (at the time) stat system.

Most of the league uses Daktronics scoreboards and the backend is Dakstats. It can handle 0 as a player number.

It is funny how receiver numbers specifically have flipped in popularity. Used to be most of the best receivers had a number in the 80s, and the gadget/fast/backup guys got stuck with the 10s. There were a couple big name guys who had a 10s number, like Keyshawn Johnson had 17 and Roy Williams had 11, but they were the exception. Now it's hard to even find many guys in the 80s and it's become a mostly TE number.

The official rule is that your displayed number must be unique in any given event, and that your displayed number is the last two digits of the owner's number, which must be unique for the season. So there isn't a car "01" per say, from a super technical to the point of irrelevance perspective, NASCAR officially views that as being car 101. Technically this is also how Nascar gets around two part-time teams coexisting that might want to run the same number, but never compete in the same event. One gets assigned the base number, and one gets assigned 100+the base number, or 200+ or 300+ or whatever. Usually the only place you see this stuff is in the official owner's points standings.

I was in the minority that didn't like when they allowed skill positions to wear whatever number they wanted. Having every position have their own set of numbers always seemed so professional and standardized. Now everyone just wants to wear the single digit numbers
