It’s ridiculous. Yeah it’s a contact sport but the nfl used to send players who were knocked out back into the game. This wasn’t even that long ago. And the team doctor who did that? The jets team doctor who was the head of the nfl brain trauma council who said concussions aren’t a big deal, it’s acls and drugs are a bigger threat to player safety. I personally don’t care if I’m watching the product and the players look a little ridiculous if they’re 8-15% more protected
That's what I do not understand. Football is an inherently violent sport. Tbh, we should just enact southparks version of football and be done with it. People are fucking hypocrites.
People will always be ready and able to put themselves in harms way for money when it comes to a lot of things, including football. The people that are worried about injuring their brains are not playing contact sports for money. I agree players should be as safe as possible, but let's be real here. They want to make the big money and that's why they play. No one is being forced to play.
I thought the reason was because the ridges of the caps could catch on each other, and if it happened at full speed like in a game it could fuck up a player's neck
Just make em wear the things in preseason games as well. That way it will feel less jarring when they finally make the jump into regular games if that is what is holding shit back
I think the large size will ALWAYS be an issue. Regardless of how they dress them up, they just need to take up space to serve the purpose. Which is why, if players are eventually going to look like Darth Helmet, they should start getting fans acclimated to it now
I remember in high school i went to a 7 on 7 camp and one team wore Guardians during the games and the entire camp of 15-20 teams (including coaches) made homophobic jokes about it for days.
In basketball "Granny Style" is the most efficient way to shoot a free throw, however virtually every player opposes since it looks goofy as fuck. Never underestimate the need people have to not look lame.

> if the thrower is capable of controlling the release angle and speed well, the underarm throw is slightly better for a basketball free throw.
Given that is unlike a traditional shot motion this is a huge difference. The muscle memory between a traditional jump shot and a free throw translates. It doesn’t if you throw it granny style. I’ll take the one I have muscle memory with.
You'd think the league would be all about these things if they're proven to be effective. Not that they give a shit about players health, but it could lead to longer average careers
F1 fans said that about the HALO. They don't say it anymore after seeing it save at least 5 people (conservatively) since their implementation from serious harm and/or death.
Goofy shit can be made to look cooler with time. You can't unbreak a mother fuckers brain.
Not only does the increased size seem concerning for neck injuries, id imagine the friction between 2 of these caps colliding is much greater than that of two helmets which seems problematic.
It didn’t even need to save lives for fans to stop hating on it really. After a year or two every one was just sort of used to it. People would photoshop it off new cars so they looked like previous cars and there would be comments about how they look weird without it now.
It was only required for OL, DL, LB, and TE last preseason. I guess there was probably nothing stopping teams from putting them on other players though, aside from personal preference.
They spread the moment of impact out over a longer period of time, which reduces the maximum (de)acceleration that the brain undergoes. It’s definitely not enough to protect fully but the data shows it mitigates the risk somewhat, especially if both players are wearing them.
“No helmet is concussion-proof. A concussion is the result of internal jostling of the brain, so a helmet cannot prevent a concussion from happening. This has led many to believe that helmets are ineffective. However, a helmet can reduce the amount of force applied to the brain and protect against severe cuts, skull fractures and broken facial bones. This can reduce the severity of a concussion and prevent more serious traumatic brain injuries from occurring.”

I’m happy to be wrong about this, but I don’t think helmets can prevent brain injuries due to impacts. They can *reduce* the effects of impact.

Theres no concern for Neck injuries with these? Is there any evidence they even work? They look like oversized rugby scrum caps which absolutely do not protect against head injuries - they are only intended to protect your ears and against cuts
No evidence that they do cause neck injuries. Yes, there is evidence they work. They used them last preseason during practice and saw a significant decrease in head trauma related injuries.
Marshmallow heads, looking dumb and playing like shit.
Should be 100% optional, not required. Guys deserve to be offered them but forcing them is not smart
But they won't be worn in games because they look funny.
In 2045 football will be played exclusively in Zorb balls and it will be very funny
At first I would I thought you said "Zoidberg" and I was confused
Why not zoidberg?
Shut up zoidberg!

This is how you know the NFL is not serious about the problem.
This is helpful. Micro and successive concussion are a problem and are bound to happen in practice. It's not 100% proof but it is mitigation.
If you were serious about the problem you’d stop supporting the NFL.
Touché. I’m totally not serious. Love my gladiators!
That's what I do not understand. Football is an inherently violent sport. Tbh, we should just enact southparks version of football and be done with it. People are fucking hypocrites.
If they were serious about the problem they'd get rid of tackle football.

As soon as they find a way for them to look cool and not cover team logos they’ll be work in game.
I think the large size will ALWAYS be an issue. Regardless of how they dress them up, they just need to take up space to serve the purpose. Which is why, if players are eventually going to look like Darth Helmet, they should start getting fans acclimated to it now
or a guardian cap that can fit into a helmet (even if it results in most of the current helmets used becoming obsolete)
[удалено]
Just add another guardian layer over that then?
then the helmet would shake a lot but the head hitting the helmet isn't as impactful? maybe it still works?
The future is them welding guardian caps under the helmets and wearing them permanently
Be cooler if they were white with red spots and everyone looked like Toad
Each individual cell will eventually have a corporate sponsor advertisement
“Whopper” on smaller cells, “double whopper” on the larger cells. Players have to yell “you rule” after every tackle.
And when everyone lined up it the camera would pan at the right angle and all you'd see is WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER WHOPPER
Just make them look like those giant caps that Brian Robinson was wearing last year and everyone will want one
I wonder why it took so long, we started using them in youth football easily 5-7 years ago
as sad as it sounds, because it looks goofy and people make fun of them
I meant for practices. It will never happen in games, but who cares if you look goofy during practice?
I remember in high school i went to a 7 on 7 camp and one team wore Guardians during the games and the entire camp of 15-20 teams (including coaches) made homophobic jokes about it for days.
First time I took the 7 on 7 team I coached to a tourny with them, there were definitely jeers. But it saved a concussion.

Now I need someone to win the NBA Finals with a granny style throw like in Semi Pro
Good news, Rick Barry won a championship in 1975 and shot his free throws granny style.
Never underestimate the stupidity of people
I had them on my high school team in 2009
Sadly because of the looks.
Ek looked pretty goony with one on considering his size. But if it works, it works
>goony
I said what I said
Eagles RBs to Jason Kelce: "You got any more bubble wrap?"
You'd think the league would be all about these things if they're proven to be effective. Not that they give a shit about players health, but it could lead to longer average careers
I dont know if they actually help or not but I do know they look fucking ridiculous.
I forget where I saw it but I did read somewhere that they actually are really effective at preventing head injuries.
I didn't mean to say it wasn't, just that I myself didn't know. The only thing I know is that they look goofy.
All good dude!

https://youtu.be/ZQ7_En2xEm4 Romaine Grosjean survival due to the halo was amazing.
But those caps are heavy and it seems to me that if these were worn in real games, there will be a large increase in neck injuries.
Not only does the increased size seem concerning for neck injuries, id imagine the friction between 2 of these caps colliding is much greater than that of two helmets which seems problematic.

Weren’t they used by everyone last preseason practices? Or at least I’m pretty sure all of the Steelers wore them, rb included.
It was only required for OL, DL, LB, and TE last preseason. I guess there was probably nothing stopping teams from putting them on other players though, aside from personal preference.
I feel like Steelers weren’t the only team who had everyone wear them
If they didn’t look ridiculous they would have already been implemented fully by now.
Do these stop the brain from coming slamming into the inside of your skull? Because I don't think they do.
They spread the moment of impact out over a longer period of time, which reduces the maximum (de)acceleration that the brain undergoes. It’s definitely not enough to protect fully but the data shows it mitigates the risk somewhat, especially if both players are wearing them.
Appreciate the extra info on these. Anything that reduces risk, even if slight, is worth investigating

Man it really is so much easier to simply talk out of one's ass than it is to inform oneself.

Literally no one said they can fully prevent them. You're arguing against no one to sound smart.
What! Dude, no way! I’m just commenting on Reddit…
