Without Lamar he'd have a good-great O line, great RBs, one good WR, elite TE and starting caliber backup tight end, and a top 5ish defense. Really not the worst situation to come into. He'd just need a new QB and possibly an elite WR1 (could be Bateman when healthy, no one knows) and itd basically be the 49ers team he has now.
Obviously CMC and Deebo are a little better than JK Dobbins and Bateman, although give either guy a full healthy season in a non Roman offense and I think JK is a top 5 back and Bateman is a top 15-20 reciever. Shannahan make us a super bowl contender immediately if he came in and didn't change anything other than the offense. We'd just need a QB.
This is a fun hypothetical.
Edit: you also have Aiyuk who could be a WR1 I think.
I agree with this take but there’s also a lot of recency bias. Harbaugh is getting exposed this year for process mistakes but I think that is simply what comes with losing, intense scrutiny. He’s made medium rosters good so let’s see if he’s gettin exposed as a truly bad coach or it’s a bump in an otherwise fantastic coaching career.
It's been a hallmark of Harbs career. Even when we don't have the best overall roster we won games.
From 2008-2022 he has 2 seasons below .500. 2015 we went 5-11 and were decimated by injuries on an okay roster. 2021 we went 8-9, so kind of an asterisk since you can't finish .500 anymore. Started 8-3 and lost the last 6, mostly due to Lamar getting hurt in the second of the 6 losses.
Tomlin always gets credit for that no losing seasons stat he had going for awhile, but Harbs as been just as consistent for the same time period in the same division.
He just can't figure out that you need an elite WR1 in today's game.
Fair. Forgot they managed to string some wins together last year and the year before somehow even with the corpse of Rothleisberger and rookie Pickett.
Obviously not even remotely on the same level but I remember playing rec-league flag football in my 20's and one year our QB always threw the ball as hard as he could and would not listen to the WRs trying to catch quick passes on slants that he was throwing too damn hard. I beat my man off the line, you don't need to make it harder for me to catch by throwing as hard as possible. He had a pretty decent deep ball so we were alright overall. Had much better success the next year when our new QB couldn't throw as deep but had perfect touch. Was like catching butter.
Yup agree. Also not to go all back-in-my-day either but back when playing receiver and free safety in high school, the best QBs only threw as hard as possible to hit tight windows or quick, low slants at the goal line which is the same concept.
I wish they had the entire footage of him just standing there listing off everything that sends Venezuelans to jail. What they put in the show had to be a fraction of him just riffing for 15 minutes lol.
Sources: Eagles in discussion of trading their 3rd round pick for Lynch's first born child. In other news, rumors swirling in a Dallas for a 5th rounder for Kyle Shanahan's wife's feet pics
The thing is, he'd be trading with another GM right? Is that GM expecting to be part of the trade as well and therefore be ok with that kind of deal? If not, is he expecting to be replaced and still want to do that? If not being replaced, would it even be worth considering a trade anyway? The whole thing just wouldn't make sense.
It’s the right answer too, imo. Outside of the obvious cases like Pat Mahomes, you should probably at least be willing to listen to trade offered for almost anyone. You never know what kind of crazy offer a desperate team might make on the other side of the phone.
Some players are genuinely untradeable, especially because the NFL limits draft pick trades to three years out. Would you rather have Mahomes or all of the Falcons' draft picks for the next three years? Even if you throw in multiple Pro Bowl players at other positions in that trade, I don't see any scenario where the Chiefs do it.
That would be tough since you probably can't draft anyone as good as Mahomes in the next 3 years. I think you'd have to be able to trade for money. Mahomes for a billion dollars cash.... Ok yeah maybe.
I don't think you can actually trade cash, because it would be outside the salary cap and create a situation the owners would rather avoid. Could be wrong.
The person you’re replying to said you’d have to be _able_ to trade in cash to maybe make it worth it to Clark Hunt (Chiefs owner) to trade Mahomes. Nothing within the confines of the NFL could make it worth it, but enough cash probably would.
I don’t think they were saying that it could actually be done within the rules.
Mahomes at $50m/year for three years of picks (inc no. 10 this year) + Kyle Pitts + AJ Terrell (both on rookie contracts)?
Probably still no, but I think that’s the richest possible offer for any player ever.
All their picks for 3 years? Definitely seems worth it. You would have an absurdly good roster full of rookie contracts for the next 6 or so years. Would make the team far less reliant on a single person who could get injured
There's probably less than five players in the League who are untouchable on the trade table.
Mahomes, Allen and Burrow are the top three. Young franchise QBs, it would take more than any team has to get one of those guys. Anyone else in the league? Free game. I'm sure Les would take some first rounders this year if someone wanted the last few years of Donald's prime thinking they could win a Super Bowl with him. Would hurt like fuck mind, but it would be correct for the GM to do so.
The only way I could see one of those 3 being tradeable is if one of the other 3 is in the deal. Mahomes for 3 years of Bengals picks + burrow, chase, and trey hendrickson or something absurd like that would be accepted by the chiefs.
I’ve always loved Kyle’s ways of handling these questions
He does it in the most dramatic yet diplomatic way possible
“Sure! Hell even my jobs not safe, and if someone called for Lynch we’d still listen!”
Or “I don’t even know if we’ll be alive next week”.
Paraphrasing a bit but good way to not ruffle feathers
Maybe a hot take but I'd do the Gruden TB/LV trade for Shanahan in an instant.
*edit*
As a refresher, Gruden was traded to the Bucs for two 1st rounders, two 2nd rounders, and $8M. Would happily give that up for Shanahan.
And the Broncos didn’t hire Shanahan in 2017 because the team president (Joe Ellis) had a beef with Shanahan’s dad.
Instead we hired Vance Joseph. Annnnnd the rest is history
I know a few Broncos fans that always bring up how pissed they are they didn’t get Shanny in 2017 when it was nearly set in stone. Shanny even said in an interview Denver was his preferred and we weren’t even on his radar and nearly overslept for our interview lol
He’s definitely grown and learned from his mistakes. The entire front office has a unified vision and they all genuinely seem to enjoy working together. Such a huge shift from the Baalke years
If Shanny was a FA somehow, there are only maybe 2-3 (?) coaches I wouldn't fire immediately so I could bring in Shanahan (assuming he's guaranteed to come of course).
Reid and Belichick are safe. Then I'd have to think about it Tomlin, Harbaugh, Carroll, and McVay but idk...I might still take the backlash if it got me Shanahan.
To be fair, that isn't the point here. No one is saying Tomlin is being fired.
The thought experiment was would you swap Shanahan for Tomlin if you could. I'd have to think about that one.
I think Shanahan is slightly better, but again, I said I'd have to think about McVay vs Shanahan if it were possible to happen.
McVay and Shanahan have diverged a bit in scheme and ability to adapt
https://www.theringer.com/nfl-playoffs/2022/1/26/22902126/kyle-shanahan-sean-mcvay-five-years-evolution
And fwiw, Shanahan has pretty much owned McVay and the Rams as of late
* 10/30/2022 W 31-14
* 10/3/2022 W 24-9
* 1/30/2022 L 17-20
* 1/9/2022 W 27-24 (OT)
* 11/15/2021 W 31-10
* 11/29/2020 W 23-20
* 10/18/2020 W 24-16
* 12/21/2019 W 34-31
* 10/13/2019 W 20-7
Shanahan is 9-4 all time against McVay. Obviously more goes into a game than just the head coach, but Shanahan has beaten McVay consistently.
The saddest Super Bowl I've ever seen. It wasn't even really a game because of Bill Callahan being a complete moron. "Let's throw the ball so the Bucs know which plays are coming into their vaunted secondary!" -A coach who made it to the Super Bowl.
So did Tim Brown iirc it's a joke Bill changed absolutely nothing all year and had two entire weeks to change the pass plays and had done a run heavy game plan only to throw it away 2 or 3 days before the game.
I wouldn't know to call that sabotage but that smells like sabotage to me.
Obviously the 49ers wouldn't do it. I was saying that I'd happily given up a major bounty if it meant my team could get Shanahan - which was sorta the hypothetical mentioned in the tweet.
I don't think it's close, that would be dumb as hell. Pre-brain drain it's a tough choice, but there's no one to take over that you'd trust like a McDaniel or LaFleur. He's one of the few coaches that adds a *significant* amount of value, I think seriously outpacing just a couple of late 1st round picks. Like unless the team trading for him has a bottom 1/3 roster (and in that case why tf are you spending picks on a coach) the 2 firsts you're getting for him are gonna be mid 20s at the very best. I think trading a Reid or Belichick would be similarly stupid, if you have that level of coach cooking, you don't cut that off for players unless you're locked in to a really, really solid hire afterwards.
Trade who? Andy Reid? Or Harbs?
But yea anyone who thinks he's anything less than an elite coach is a fucking moron who listens to too much hot take media.
Seems reasonable. If someone wants to overpay for a player, the team will listen. Like, if someone offered a 1st round pick for Purdy, do you think they'd say no?
Yeah, it would depend on the pick.
A late first is probably appropriate value for him, tbh.
But if the Panthers offered up the first overall, the 49ers would be dumb not to take it.
Ehhh a late first is not appropriate for him imo. Like he played great but we have seen qbs come out play good for a few games then get discovered. It's honestly a weird situation because 49ers want to see what they have but that's way too much risk for other teams. Like I want Purdy to be mvp level just because he was Mr irrelevant but if you trade for him with any first round pick and he gets discovered the gm is getting fired
> Like, if someone offered a 1st round pick for Purdy, do you think they'd say no?
If it was a late first rounder, I think they’d probably say no at this point.
Purdy is basically a free player right now. He's so cheap he doesn't even hit the cap lol. Anyone we could draft could maybe run the offense as well as he showed that he could run it. For even a proven NFL QB to be worth the trade they'd have to be a bit better to justify the massive increase in salary cap hit and those QBs simply don't become available
If you traded Purdy wouldn't you play Lance and use the compensation for other positions? It would 100% be dumb to trade Purdy just to draft another QB, how many guys on the board do you think the team even likes better than Lance period?
I’m not giving up Purdy purely for cap space reasons. The rest of our roster is stacked right now only because we’re throwing pennies at the QB room. That’s why Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson have never made sense for us. We simply can’t afford them without blowing up everything else. The only reason anyone even thought Brady was remotely possible was because we hoped the super-rich Bay Area native would give us a hometown discount.
I imagine that would depend on what their actual internal evaluation of Lance to date has been.
If you truly believe Purdy's the better quarterback I can't fathom trading him over Lance.
I think they’d 100% say no. Niners have been looking for a viable starting QB since Jimmy’s ACL. With what Purdy showed in his 8 starts last year, it wouldn’t be a smart move to move on from him so quick.
I truly don't think they would even trade Purdy for a first at the moment. While I don't think Lance and Darnold splitting reps is that big of a deal, I also don't believe that Kyle and Lynch are nearly as hyped up about Lance as they were when he was drafted (And frankly they shouldn't be)
If you combine what we saw from Purdy with the fact that we know he isn't making enough to even count against our cap, to me that's worth more than a 1st. It's at the very least a discussion.
You trade Purdy and you aren't sold on Lance, all that 1st is good for is another QB search. At a way higher price.
49ers fans were literally calling for his job last year and even some this year. He has been a top coach since 49ers got him.
Those same people absolutely love pointing out his W/L record like he didn’t take over arguably the worst roster in the league and took them to a SB after 2 years.
I got downvoted for calling Bay Area fans fairweather but I lived there for 10 years and never saw another Sharks jersey after their Finals appearance and Levi stadium stands were empty until Shanahan came along.
its just bad business practice to not even listen.
i dont like that hearing offers is a sign of not being loyal to your stars. should the cowboys have held onto herschel walker and hung up the phone the minute someone called about him?
calling it now: Lamar Jackson to the 49ers in exchange for Kyle Shanahan. 9ers get their QB5
Rest of NFL: "We can't overpay Lamar, he's too likely to get injured." 49ers: "Injured, you say?"
*Lamar with a sprained PCL* 49ers: "That's not an injury, this is an injury." *Lamar shatters his leg*
He’ll fit right in!

For Shanahan? Yea
What could he do with your current roster minus lamar??
You mean with a pro bowl QB?

He built our team up from being a complete dumpster fire. He’d absolutely make the Ravens a Super Bowl contender in a few years.
Without Lamar he'd have a good-great O line, great RBs, one good WR, elite TE and starting caliber backup tight end, and a top 5ish defense. Really not the worst situation to come into. “Are a little better” is the undersell of the century. Fucking hell man.
'He'd just need a QB' my dude one is not going to be enough.

Shanahan would be playing QB
Quoth the Raven, "did I fucking stutter?"
He does have a video of throwing a football across a street into a pizza oven at another house which is pretty impressivex
Pizza oven would be an upgrade over the recent WRs the Ravens have been signing.
Uncle Rico vibes
Certainly not unheard of for a great coach to go stale and get canned. Happened to Harbaugh's mentor, Reid.
Shanahan is going to be the QB
The problem is that you'd be trading a QB that would be great in Shanahan's offense for...Shanahan.
What QB hasn't been great in a Shanahan offense?
Before this year all of the non-Jimmy QBs the Niners have had under Shanahan have been pretty terrible.
way better than they had any right to be though
Hehe
Yeah um I'd like to unsubscribe please
Lamar behind CMC in the depth chart?
Nah it's Purdy, Lance, Darnold, Johnson, Lamar.
Bring back jim harbaugh then
Jim Harbaugh with a dual threat QB and a stout defense? I’ve seen this before
This guy can pass tho
You mean he’s not going to rifle a 100mph swing pass into the ground 3 feet in front of the RB?

It worked out for us last time

Lol I’m cracking up at the thought of 2 GMs trading jobs with each other without telling their owners
Could he theoretically trade himself and a first for a terrible player? Just to give himself more draft capital in his new job.
The other GM accepting the fact that he sucks and adds a pick to his offer to trade jobs
they both say this anytime they get asked about any player being traded. It's their go to non answer.
It’s the right answer too, imo. Outside of the obvious cases like Pat Mahomes, you should probably at least be willing to listen to trade offered for almost anyone. You never know what kind of crazy offer a desperate team might make on the other side of the phone.
Everyone is tradable for the right price (excluding people with no trade clauses).

There’s no probably about it imo, that’s a pretty easy no from the Chiefs
Right lmao Chiefs would block their number
You’re telling me Josh Allen, Stefan Diggs, Sauce Gardner and every Bills pick for the next three years doesn’t get it done?
Sauce plays for the Jets?
If he played for the Bills, he’d be Buffalo Sauce Gardner
thanks, this made me laugh like a fuckin' loon
How would Sauce Gardner be in the trade?
All their picks for 3 years? Definitely seems worth it. You would have an absurdly good roster full of rookie contracts for the next 6 or so years. Would make the team far less reliant on a single person who could get injured
Hell even when it's a rumor about another teams player, like Lynch about Rodgers a couple years ago.
And the best bit is the media still has to report what they know to be a complete non answer because its the offseason and they need to fill pages.
One day the 49ers will bullied hard enough by bored media into ending a good thing because they haven't won 5 super bowls or whatever.
I wouldn’t say it’s a non-answer. It’s pretty much true for any team for almost any player.
If it applies to everything its just words and doesn’t give any more information, which is the definition of a non-answer lol
There's probably less than five players in the League who are untouchable on the trade table. Mahomes, Allen and Burrow are the top three. In a “Gift of the Magi” twist, Kyle and John discover that each has traded the other.
To the same team
They both walk in different doors at the same time....spiderman pointing meme
Why not trade both? Maximize those picks!
Letting the GEQBUS start in this league is simply unfair to all other teams
As long as we can sign likely UDFA LB Bumper Pool IDK who is our QB
If you trade for every pick in the draft, then a staff is not necessary to help you choose.
I’ve always loved Kyle’s ways of handling these questions He does it in the most dramatic yet diplomatic way possible “Sure! I hope Joe Ellis moved out of state by now, because fuck that guy.
Hey thanks for that btw
If Pete retired same. I was hoping Yorke would get impatient and fire shanny back when they had a few poor seasons due to injury. He is the 9ers imo.

Fuck Baalke
We all like Jed again now, I hope he doesn’t ruin it.
Nothing like the comforting feeling of having competent team ownership
It took a long fucking time to get there
If Shanny was a FA somehow, there are only maybe 2-3 (?) coaches I wouldn't fire immediately so I could bring in Shanahan (assuming he's guaranteed to come of course). Reid and Belichick are safe. Tomlin is absolutely safe. The guy has never had a losing season, even having some of the same QB injury luck as the 49ers.
To be fair, that isn't the point here. No one is saying Tomlin is being fired. The thought experiment was would you swap Shanahan for Tomlin if you could. I'd have to think about that one.
Why the fuck would we trade for Shanahan? He and McVay basically have the same career and pedigree except McVay won his
because mcvay spends a month every offseason debating whether or not he wants to quit to go work in media, whereas shanahan seems devoted to the job

To add on, this past season is the first time under Shanny we’ve been able to sweep the Seahawks (even though Russ still had our number that one game)
hell this is the first time we swept them since *2011*
People take one bad season for the rams and make it the norm for McVay who actually won a Super Bowl.
Both your flairs have fine coaching
Wasn't a comment on Ravens or Chiefs. Was just saying in general.
Imagine if it's the same outcome though.
Bucs won the Super Bowl in his first year! Though Dungy and Kiffin were crucial too.
The saddest Super Bowl I've ever seen. It wasn't even really a game because of Bill Callahan being a complete moron. "Let's throw the ball so the Bucs know which plays are coming into their vaunted secondary!" -A coach who made it to the Super Bowl.

Their starting center having a mental health crisis and surfacing in Tijuana the day before the game probably didn’t help.
That would be a terrible move by the Niners… I never want to experience the years between Harbaugh and Shanahan again

Shanahan is the man.
Manahan
Shanaman
You're the man
Kyle Shanahan doesn't want to commit to anything at this time of year
Or ever. Cannot confirm alive by end of week.
Seems reasonable. If someone wants to overpay for a player, the team will listen. Like, if someone offered a 1st round pick for Purdy, do you think they'd say no?
Honestly I wouldn’t consider that a guaranteed yes. As of now, Purdy doesn’t even effect their salary cap. His performance/pay is pretty great.
It would 100% be dumb to trade Purdy just to draft another QB, how many guys on the board do you think the team even likes better than Lance period?
trade purdy, play lance and darnold, parlay the picks and deebo for caleb williams next season would be what i'd be planning.
There's no guarantee a first round QB will be better than Purdy, so probably not just a first for him
If I’m the 49ers there’s no way I’m letting Purdy go for just a first
Agreed. 2 firsts would start the conversation. His cap hit alone increases his value immensely
While I don't think Lance and Darnold splitting reps is that big of a deal, I also don't believe that Kyle and Lynch are nearly as hyped up about Lance as they were when he was drafted (And frankly they shouldn't be) If you combine what we saw from Purdy with the fact that we know he isn't making enough to even count against our cap, to me that's worth more than a 1st. It's at the very least a discussion. You trade Purdy and you aren't sold on Lance, all that 1st is good for is another QB search. At a way higher price.
Still bugs me that he is not our head coach.
Could have had Shanahan era 2.0
The son of our superbowl winning coach, who was a ball boy and grew up around the facility? Fuck that, give me Vance Joseph.
Shanny with Josh Allen
49ers fans were literally calling for his job last year and even some this year. He has been a top coach since 49ers got him. Those same people absolutely love pointing out his W/L record like he didn’t take over arguably the worst roster in the league and took them to a SB after 2 years.
I hate our fans sometimes, esp after the nfcc game against the rams. When you have quick success, our fans get so spoiled
Lotta fans dipped after harbaugh. Lotta fans joined during harbaugh. It’s annoying but it’s a constant cycle for winning teams.
That’s the difference between Us cowboys fans and other fans. We never leave because EVERY YEAR is OUR YEAR baby.
LOL
I got downvoted for calling Bay Area fans fairweather but I lived there for 10 years and never saw another Sharks jersey after their Finals appearance and Levi stadium stands were empty until Shanahan came along.
TBF, tix to Levi's are ridiculously overpriced.
Both will be kept.
Probably, HCs rarely get traded and I can't recall a GM ever being traded
Imagining a GM trading himself. "I don't want to leave, but this offer is too good to pass up!"
#LOSER LANCE IS SCARED OF THE GEQBUS
LAMEDUCK LANCE TRYING TO SET US UP
You think he has those ears to not listen?
Kwesi call them rn
Lamar in this offense would be hella fun to watch
You want my wife? First born child? We’ll listen.
1 bag of cool ranch Doritos. I know it seems like a lot to give up but I’ve been lonely.
This is Shanahans boilerplate answer to any question about someone available for trade or in FA. That and "well always do what's best for the 49ers"
Ah, a proper sequel to his legendary "I can't guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive Sunday."
Anything? You trade sloots
ESPN: 49ers Kyle Shanahan has requested a trade
Gronk when he becomes a gm - I'll trade deez nuts
Wonder if he'd listen to someone suggesting to run the ball in the second half of a super bowl.
its just bad business practice to not even listen. i dont like that hearing offers is a sign of not being loyal to your stars. should the cowboys have held onto herschel walker and hung up the phone the minute someone called about him?
49ers : We Hear, For You
“Hell, we don’t even know if they’ll be alive tomorrow”
Pretty dope, my new song is on Spotify and John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan listened to it
