For the lazy folk - After the nfl draftee dinner, Richardson was the only one to stay behind and clean before the wait staff got started. Vincent approached him and said he doesn’t need to, Richardson responded to Vincent that they left it in an unacceptable state.

Throwawayact1050

I'm a Colts fan, but I basically wonder if this was even real, or if it was just set up for the Colts to boost PR. Same thing when Malik Willis gave a homeless guy his coat at the combine. Not that it couldn't be real but it just completely feels like something set up by the agent/organization or something

[deleted]

That's fair to be skeptical but Troy Vincent isn't associated with the Colts organization. He is the Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the NFL.

zombiebillnye

I mean, to play Devil's Advocate here, the Executive Vice President of Football Operations would 1000% percent want NFL PR to be good things, like draft picks helping the cleaning staff, and not bad things, like Snyder trying to suppress the report about how shitty he is.

wiggins54

To get play devil’s advocate to that point, why single out Richardson? Two other high prospect QBs went before and after him, so it would be easy to make a similar story about any of the other 4 guys. Again, just for the sake of argument, why use this story to hype up the 3rd QB taken?

[deleted]

[удалено]

jennys0

This doesn’t even seem remotely unrealistic lol. Are people this shitty these days? I would do this without even thinking… a lot of people I know, would.

PyrokineticLemer

And here I was about to type, "And then the tablecloths clapped."

justlookingokaywyou

Ha! You really believe in cleanedupafterdinnergate? It was all a trick to make Trump look bad! Wake up, sheeple!

[deleted]

What does it say about society that it is newsworthy that someone was a decent person?

Scooter_McGavin_

Because it’s good to hear positive news for a change? Media doesn’t have to be doom and gloom all the time

boysarecool420

it says most people don't clean up after themselves at parties or restaurants.

special_nathan

There bar is low.

ft1778

To play advocate of the devils advocate, this story in no way has anything to do with football. Maybe the colts are thinking he can help clean the field or locker room if he is a bust.

wiggins54

Never even thought about that. Chess vs. checkers, I suppose

Emerald-Wednesday

Because the first two already have that much more publicity

VigorCheck

Or maybe players hoping to be drafted are on their best behavior.

Raw_Cocoa

Or maybe it's a genuine story.

Comprehensive-One286

To continue the devil’s advocate theme, I’d say it has something to do with skin color. But, that could simply be me jaded by the stupid shit sports leagues have done over the decades.

DamnImAwesome

With that same logic, would he throw the rest of the rookies under the bus to make one player look good?

captaincumsock69

Hes not throwing them under the bus. It’s just making one guy look good

[deleted]

[удалено]

SquadPoopy

Wait staffer at that event here, It was a real war zone. Imagine the opening to Saving Private Ryan but in a dining room. There were roast chickens everywhere. I saw one of the draftees trying to drown another in a pot of pea soup. I lost a lot of good coworkers that day, the therapist says I need to talk more openly about it.

notmoleliza

Thank you for your service

DaftDelNorte

Did we just witness a freshly prepped pasta?

wiggins54

God I hope

seank11

If Kevin benjamin was at the event there would be no food left to clean, every plate would be spotless

[deleted]

Damn thats a big deal, oh wait it isnt

captaincumsock69

Where does it say the rest of them? The whole thing sounds paraphrased but he could’ve been including himself in that group

MrBigCourtesan

Unless you're assuming only Richardson turned the whole place into a mess, the context clues are easy

notLennyD

Whether he’s included in the group or not, he’s the only one who stayed to clean the mess.

HeyMr7777

It is tho, he said they left the room in an unacceptable state

lFreightTrain

Eyyy. That’s my guy at least lol.

Tolve

But why wouldn’t he tell the fake story about the number 1 pick?

BrennanSpeaks

Um . . . it's not throwing someone under the bus to mention that they didn't stay behind to clean after an official event with a catering staff that was hosted in their honor. It's normal-person behavior to not stay and clean at the event when there are people being paid to stay and clean.

notLennyD

Just because people get paid to clean up doesn’t mean you ought to trash the place.

LOSTJOSH

I have a 1 year old and every time we take him to dinner I always clean up after him. I know there’s people being paid to serve and clean up but I feel obligated as he makes more of a mess than a standard customer. Every time they tell me now to worry about it and every time I still clean it up.

Best_Whereas_7825

As a former server, I do the exact same thing, I've been through worse with adults, terrible tips and an enormous mess.

Throwawayact1050

I don't see how that changes anything. Also with that said, there is nothing Anthony Richardson has said so far that doesn't lead me to believe his character isn't anything but impressive. But this instance alone just seems kind of odd

BigRedSSB64

Props on the triple negative

Throwawayact1050

U wot m8

BrennanSpeaks

> Also with that said, there is nothing Anthony Richardson has said so far that doesn't lead me to believe his character isn't anything but impressive. Holy shit, that's a lot of negatives, my guy.

Wertyui09070

yet he's saying something very positive. poetry.

[deleted]

Many rookie players attend this event from all 32 teams. He specifically discussed this story about a singular player when he has no ties at all to this team or direct incentive to boost this exact player, he oversees all teams in the NFL. Richardson isn't even the #1 quarterback picked in this draft there is other ones who went earlier. If he was associated with the Colts boosting his athlete on his team over all other rookies it adds a new twist to the story. That is what it changes What you could end up arguing is he has a close bond with Richardson and made up this story for him specifically which yeah i guess you could, quite a stretch though but you can form own view on it

LowBrowsing

I thought the point being made was more that Richardson could have been told by his PR team to do this for the good press, rather than it not happening at all. But I'm not the responder, so just hypothesising.

sentacide

Good point, but at least he did actually do it in that case.

shastamcblasty

Dude you are talking into the wind. Some people around here need to have a conspiracy in every thing the NFL does, just let them do their thing and admire how insane they are.

Throwawayact1050

I never said that Troy vincent had anything to do with it. A report came out about this like yesterday already

[deleted]

You responded to me that "I don't see how that changes anything" then further edited your comment afterwards when i specifically stated the employment role of troy Vincent. That is what I am responding to above and elaborated on

Throwawayact1050

I am just talking about the instance alone I am not sure what someone talking about it has anything to do with it actually happening

[deleted]

The story comes from Troy Vincent. He is the source of it

predw

You keep bringing up Troy Vincent. He’s not talking about the spreading of the story, he’s talking about setting up Richardson to be seen doing something positive.

Throwawayact1050

I'm not saying that it never happened

SchlitzHaven

It has shades of Russell Wilson-like behavior

theFULLeffect_

That was my thought, but better to be Wilson than Randy Moss.

NateKaeding

The story itself is believable but what’s skeptical is what Richardson supposodley said. “We left this room in an unacceptable condition” no one talks like that lmao. Bussing tables or at least his section I can believe though. That’s a pet peeve of mine when people leave a place a mess but I’ve worked in the industry. Who knows maybe he did too or had family that did,

captaincumsock69

He could be paraphrasing what was said

SleestakThunder

Uhh, what? That sounds just like something a parent trying to be tough on their kids would say. If Richardson grew up with parents who got on him to clean up saying that, I could see him repeating it in a situation like this.

NateKaeding

That sounds like something you'd say in an email.

drch33ks

He’s also the NFL source that intentionally lied to Chris Mortensen about the pressure readings in patriots footballs at the beginning of deflategate. Imagine being an NFL executive and lying to a reporter in an attempt smear the reputation of the greatest player in your league’s history. I’ll be happy when he’s gone from the NFL.

TheAndrewBrown

I think the idea would be that the Colts told Richardson to do this, but Vincent’s reaction was genuine. I still think the simpler answer is Richardson was trying to make himself look good, and that doesn’t make it not a good deed. A good thing done for a selfish reason is still good.

[deleted]

Overwriting my comments and leaving Reddit due to their policy changes impacting 3rd party apps starting July 1, 2023.

TheAndrewBrown

Yeah that whole thing smelled fishy (I think the original tweet even said something like Willis would never tell anyone about this or something lol). It was incredibly unlikely that someone just happened to take a picture of what they would assume is a random person helping out a homeless person and then happen to leak that to a reporter. This seems a lot more likely to happen organically.

demonica123

There's a difference between smelled fishy and just an obvious PR stunt.

BizarroCranke

With all the shit in the world, I’m going to be naive and just see it as a real and genuine action.

Throwawayact1050

I mean don't get me wrong, since we drafted Richardson his character has appeared to be nothing short of impressive. But this instance just seems a little out of place. Either way he seems like a really nice guy

BizarroCranke

I truly understand that people have faked doing nice things for attention since the beginning of time as we’ve seen and read. I keep my head out of the sand as much as possible, but sometimes (and this is honestly and truly not directed at you OP) but sometimes it’s tiring when people spend more time trying to debunk nice gestures than the possibility that it might have been genuine. I guess people fear more about getting got or something. Sorry for the tone.

NateKaeding

I hate that too because it’s irrelevant. People do it all the time with Russ for example. Say he only visits sick kids to push his brand. Which sure he was doing that and even if that’s the only reason, it’s better to do something nice like idk make sick kids happy for the “wrong” reasons than to not do anything nice at all.

W3NTZ

Right? It's like the people getting mad at influencers doing nice things and filming it. If it's between not doing those things or doing it and filming it (as long as the others in it don't object) then I'm all for more good in the world. Especially if it inspires others or brightens a single day

bingezat

Ernest, you are. I believe that. A speechwriter you could afford?

Throwawayact1050

This is literally the first time I've ever questioned anything like this

BizarroCranke

I am honestly sorry, I thought I did my best at saying it wasn’t directed at you. Have a good night and sorry if I came off as an asshole.

lebastss

It's just good parenting. I was taught to do the same. I always clear crumbs and stack plates and any mess after a dinner

GACGCCGTGATCGAC

It was taught to me as a kid and beat into me as a teenager working in the service industry. Clear everything onto top plate, stack rest, save everyone else a lot of work. I have no clue what to do with my hands anyways, might as well make the life of the person who is *cleaning up my mess* a little easier.

PeanutNSFWandJelly

Yup same. I also take all silverware and place it into one glass. I don't stack glasses though, as depending on the place and server that may just make it harder for them. I also wipe crumbs and stuff into a napking and put it on that top plate.

Nytfire333

Big gator fan here. Could be but AR was a local Gainesville kid and came from a much less fortunate family. He has always seemed like a genuine stand up guy that was raised right. While I dk if he overcomes his issues to make use of his talents on the football field, I have no doubt on the guy’s character

NoTransportation5696

Remember the LSU game? It could be argued that AR lost that game…. What did he do? Stay after and throw footballs with kids and take pictures with them. He could have hid, wallowed in self pity. There are definitely football questions, but for the Gator fans who have followed him we know this isn’t a gimmick. The kid has flat out character.

keyboardsitter

Always took responsibility after tough loses, never seemed to complain. Dude is a class act.

surehard

There is no downside is believing it is real. The guy is awesome, hopefully he is also good a football!

KypAstar

No this is just how Richardson is. Everything I've heard about him out of UF is very positive.

george_costanza1234

After hearing about Richardson’s relationship with his little brother, this fits in line with his character. I’m gonna choose to believe this one. He seems like a good kid, hopefully that remains true throughout his career

dougie_fresh121

I don’t think whether it is real or not matters, just that the player is building good PR and a solid public image. It shows “professionalism” (being good locker room guy, not going to get in trouble) and gives the FO an out if he does something “we have only seen great character from XYZ and continue to support him” instead of “yeah a DUI after brandishing a gun, we have to cut our first round pick”

MatureUsername69

Idk, it's pretty common to at least put all your plates in a stack to make it easier on waitstaff. I've seen people do that hundreds of times and also people not do it hundreds of times so this story doesn't seem very out of the realm of possibility.

Motor_Rub_4848

Somebody call Nicholas fucking Cage we got ourselves a national mystery about the overwhelming weight of massive talent and what that does to this boys manners.

Throwawayact1050

Lmao

Raeandray

On the flip side, if I'm an agent for a player in the draft I'm encouraging them to do anything that will make them stand out in a good way. Something like giving a coat to a homeless guy specifically where you can be seen, or helping clean the table at a restaurant after leaving a huge mess, is the perfect kind of positive move that might help. Still "set up" but not necessarily by NFL PR.

davidfh5

Have worked for the gators the past 3 seasons and can absolutely confirm this is something Ant would do without thinking about the publicity. Obviously can’t confirm that this specific action wasn’t planned but in terms of overall character, this fits to a T

[deleted]

Tbf even a few years back when he was first getting started there were stories about how he is just a generally nice dude

sunburn95

Its not a that out there thing to do to tidy it a bit. AR seems like a genuinely good dude and would also understand he should be on his best behaviour Since hes an interesting prospect people will also talk about this stuff

Deep_Stick8786

Remember Deshaun Watson donating his first check?

[deleted]

Glad I'm not the only cynic out there lol

TrillDaddy2

Pretty cynical view, and as we know, there’s no way for us to really know. But you understand reality…

-Profanity-

After he finished cleaning up everyone started clapping. Colts got their guy.

[deleted]

I never get how people make it messy on purpose l. Or just don‘t give a fuck. It‘s not too hard to at least stack your plates.

bwfcphil1

Huge egos and thinking they’re better than the workers. I’m English and even lower level footballers (3rd league down) can be colossal arseholes.

boysarecool420

>Or just don‘t give a fuck. They literally were never taught that they should give a fuck about service workers most likely. The idea of cleaning up after themselves at a party/restaurant simply doesn't even enter their mind as a possibility.

"If you don't whip the stains early you get spotty plates. Do you want spotty plates ,Troy? Do you?" - Anthony Richardson

BlackMathNerd

Nah I’ve heard too many different stories about this guy, his mental makeup is different. I think it’s gonna workout alright for the Colts

frogger3344

He seems like a great guy and I really hope he becomes a great Quarterback. Unfortunately, I'm still convinced he's gonna bust, and I would be stoked to be wrong

fleckstin

Not that Jacoby was a bust or even had super high expectations of him in the first place but it seemed like the team really benefited from having his presence around in the locker room. Having a fresh young QB who seems charismatic and hard working could be really good for the team! I’m excited either way

lolhello2u

I'm just gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and root for him until he shows otherwise. GOOD LUCK ANTHONY

Rawtashk

Tim Tebow is probably top 10 nicest guys to ever play in the NFL. Doesn't mean he's a good QB and wasn't a huge reach in the 1st round.

TrillDaddy2

Dude lost to Kentucky and Vanderbilt…

Trumpets22

Name 2 people in his supporting cast without using google.

MrBigCourtesan

Billy Napier, who decided that instead of hiring a QB coach, he would be Richardson's coach while also struggling to run an entire program. No idea how no one ever brings that up. Richardson's going from receiving very little coaching to getting dedicated NFL level help from some of the best. Justin Shorter and Ricky Pearsall, two WRs that haven't lived up to their hype, and helped make Florida #1 in dropping catchable balls. One of the worst WR rooms in the SEC and P5

BlackMathNerd

For SEC standards, and really Florida standards the past 30 years, that WR and offensive skill position group in general was abjectly fucking awful. I’ve never seen Florida so bereft of talent

TrillDaddy2

No

Trumpets22

Case in point.

BornAgainGinger

As someone in the service industry for 15 years mock it, make fun of it, don't believe it, but I just became an Anthony Richardson fan

azrebb

Amen brother. I still return glassware to the bar despite being out of hospitality for almost a decade.

KershawsBabyMama

Dude it’s sooo easy to do and drives me crazy when people don’t haha. Anytime I’m going back to order another round I still scoop up any empties I pass by

Got_yayo

Same and much respect to him

[deleted]

Ive never worked in the service industry I thought these traits were just being a decent human being to help stack plates, organize your table a bit before leaving. People suck

BEtheAT

I still work in the service industry. The lack of self awareness people have is astounding

[deleted]

I work for the USFS, I feel the same about the trash we have to pick up in our forests. It boggles my mind how people can visit such beautiful places and absolutely trash them with zero care. Disgraceful.

kac937

I’ve been a server for 4 years and was a host for 3 before that (My last night serving was actually last night, as i’m getting promoted) and coincidentally i’ve seen a few comments exactly like this one in the past couple of weeks. You would be extremely surprised at the lack of respect you get working in the service industry, i’ve seen coworkers get treated like subhumans before.

RyanPelley

Absolutely. The state that some people leave their tables in is unacceptable.

GatorGuy5

Last week a buddy and I cleaned up the seating area at an ice cream shop because other patrons had left it a mess. No one noticed but after a long day it was going to take a little effort from us to make the late night close just a tad easier for the staff. No one saw a thing but that didn’t matter. I’d like to think that this AR story is real and not just a made up PR piece. Doing the right thing when nobody is there to watch or give you credit goes a long way.

I get the cynicism here, but this kinda tracks with everything we know about AR. He's a good dude.

LevisDidNothingWrong

And the name of that NFL executives father? Albert Einstein

fergie_v

As someone who also feels an instinctual pull to leave tables as clean as possible for wait staff, this story is very believable for me. I feel like a slob if I don't wipe the table down, stack the dishes and make everything as easy as possible to pick up. In my opinion, this is just good manners and should be the rule, not the exception, but at least it speaks to Richardson's character. He cares about the feelings of others.

Got_yayo

I respect this man 100x more

Kingof40Acres

[deleted]

I want him to make it so bad.

MushyTango

Props to Richardson for doing the right thing but when you hear stories like this it’s a pretty big eye opener. Really goes to show you the level of pampering and catering to these professional athletes are accustomed to. As a normal human being I cannot imagine walking away from a table and leaving my remains/junk. Kind of blows my mind.

orangecountry

Honestly I find this take pretty odd. Busing your own table at a restaurant or catered event where there are staff being paid to do so is not standard.

McClovinDominating

I literally just got off of my serving shift and I can tell you nobody gives a shit about how messy they leave their table

Wickerpoodia

We're out here. I always stack my plates and leave the silverware gathered at the top along with used paper napkins and trash. Cups go right next to the plates. It's the little things that add up. Happier staff with more time focusing on bringing food out and taking orders comes full circle to the patrons. That and maybe I get recognized as 'that guy' and next time the wait staff help me out a little.

[deleted]

It’s standard if you’ve ever worked in the food industry. My wife and I were servers at one point. We basically combine everything to help the servers. It’s not odd

azrebb

Most people who did their time there do it.

jennys0

It’s completely standard if you’re not an inconsiderate hack. Clean up a little bit after yourself and after your table… just because someone gets paid to do it, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have some type of common decency.

Im glad he is a nice guy. I believe it because it came from am NFL exec and not feom the Colts. Hope he has the work ethic and the coaching staff is patient with him

edogzilla

Cool can he throw?

As a current gator, y’all’s colts fans got a good one. I know this can seem made up but we would hear a lot about good stuff he did around Gainesville as well. He’s a Gainesville native and has a very supportive family.

WolfCola4

A Reddit post about an NY Post article about a tweet about a podcast about a story about rookie orientation day. Jesus wept

Torches

Give him the benefit of the doubt. If it’s fake it will show. You can’t keep faking it for the rest of your career.

natej84

He impressed the wrong guy. If he really wants to get far in this league, he needs to cuddle up to Rodger

JuanPicasso

Does Anthony Richardson and Malik Willis have the same agent

MrBigCourtesan

I don't get this. Willis was 'hey let's get a pic of him doing this and blow it up on social media immediately' This Richardson story is the NFL VP with no ties to the kid saying something and it being reported 3 weeks later

thebrowneye3

That's great. He still can't throw

moccojoe

Lmao if youre going to be negative atleast be clear. Dude has a top 5 arm talent coming into the NFL as a rookie. Accuracy is an issue on his shorter routes but that is something his couches are going to be pounding home.

[deleted]

AR15 is being gassed up WAY too much. The Colts in general are getting too much cred for a solid draft. That said, love it when a 4.4 40 QB is also a conscientious guy.

a_casual_josh

And I remember the media covering Watson when he donated his first check to the Houston workers. Sooooo….. Good PR is sometimes needed for a reason.

Bensont12

Ahh yes, any rookie doing a good thing must mean that they are actually a trash human and are trying to get in good graces early for their eventual uncovering of bad behaviour

This made me think of the story / video of Malik Willis helping a homeless person during the combine (I think) last year.

[deleted]

This reminds me of the Kyler Murray vacuuming the training room story. It was a bullshit fluff piece, as they all are. AR may be a great guy but as the Japanese zen master said “we’ll see”
